Nolan Baker longs to be "thirty, flirty and thriving" in this charmingly quirky LGBTQIA+ romance that's one part 13 Going on 30 and one part One Last Stop.
WHY CAN'T WE SKIP TO THE GOOD PART?
Twenty-three-year-old Nolan Baker wants it all by the time he's thirty. Too bad he's single, barely able to cover his own expenses, and still paying his dues at a prominent NYC comedy club. When faced with his perfect sister's wedding, Nolan takes it as a wakeup call. It's time to quit comedy and make good on his practical dreams—most importantly, asking Drew Techler, his best friend, to be his date.
But right as Nolan is about to give it all up, he's asked to fill a last-minute spot for a famous comedian. Score! He crushes his set, but stands Drew up, misses his sister's big day, and disappoints his entire family. After major blowouts with everyone he loves, Nolan desperately wishes on a set of gift "magical healing crystals" to skip to the good part of life. When he wakes the next morning, it's seven years later, he's a successful comedian, and he has everything he always thought he wanted. Everything, that is, except his friends and family, none of whom are taking his future self's calls.
With nowhere else to turn, Nolan sets out to find the only person he trusts to help. Except Drew is all grown up now, too. He's hot, successful...and hates Nolan's guts. As Nolan works to get back to his younger self—and the life he so carelessly threw away—he'll have to prove he's not the man everyone thinks they know in order to regain Drew's trust, friendship, and maybe, ultimately, his heart.

Nolan (23 & 30) dreams of being a famous comedian, something his family doesn’t really support. He’s, also, in love with his roommate, Drew. The night they both declare their feelings for each is also the night Nolan makes a decision that costs him everything. Flash forward 7 years and Nolan wakes up not knowing how he got where he is.
I really liked how seeing into the future helped him realize he needed to make changes to be a better person. His character growth was great since he was really unlikable at 23, but totally tolerable at 30. Overall, a well paced fun time. I do wish we had a chapter or two from Drew's POV, though.
Series notes: I’m not really sure how these are connected since it’s been a while since I read the first two, so I’d say fine as a standalone.
Narration notes: He did fine.
*Thanks to Hoopla for the bonus borrow, so I didn’t have to use a credit.
A witty story to read on the beach with the sun on your face while your smile grows bigger and bigger and never disappears! A fluffy book to read on the couch wrapped in blankets while your heart lights from joy! Or just an amazing read for all of us who need to be comforted.
I loved Never Been Kissed and found You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince meh. But New Adult is Timothy Janovski’s best book so far! This is what I call the perfect rom-com!
After reading the first sentences, I already knew I would love Nolan’s story. The smile on my face caused pain in my jaws, followed by pangs in my gut because Nolan had hurt people so much. But my smile returned almost immediately, and I swooned and rooted for Nolan and Drew so much. Can we talk about tall, sweet, probably demisexual redhead Drew for a moment?? While I hated Nolan at times, I adored Drew. He was such a cute cinnamon roll who didn’t like to go out but got forced by Nolan to live outside of his shell.
Timothy, I’m really excited about your next book, The (Faking) Dating Game, and I can’t wait to have it in my hands!
I received an ARC from Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
More coherent review to come once I've gathered my feelings, but for now I'll say this one snuck up on me in the very best way. An absolute sucker punch of feels that ended with such hope and joy and heart. I *love* magical realism in the vein of alternate timeline/parallel universes in romance and this did it perfectly.
Aweeee this one shaped up to be fricken adorable and soft! I wasn’t entirely certain where the plot was going, but as soon as 30% hit, I really hit my stride. The 13 Going On 30 influence was noted and definitely appreciated!
I love whenever a main character starts out as not the best person and the main part of the story is their arc to being a ~better~ person. It’s always a fine line of changing for the better but not losing who they fundamentally are, and Janovsky obviously understood this. Nolan messed up in the past, but he was a good person who just needed a bit of a wake-up call. We can all be selfish, so I never blamed him, but it was nice to see him grow up a bit.
I think the whole company/crystals thing to describe the time travel was a bit convoluted and confusing. Maybe it would’ve been better to just kinda let it ride lol. I just think there was more to dive into with that weird company so it felt a bit half-baked as is. Interesting! But confusing.
Can I please visit 831 Books?? I need it 😭 I’ll settle for being Imogen’s babysitter because damn she was cute!! Wait actually I’ll be Milkshake’s dog walker. I’m desperate here!!
As for the audiobook, I really enjoyed the production! The narrator did a wide variety of voices that all sounded natural. All in all, a really solid book.

*The sex scene(s) had pretty vague descriptions, but a little somethin somethin nonetheless.
Bonus Points: Tessa Dare and Taylor Swift references ✅

New Adult is now my favourite of Timothy Janovsky's books that I've read so far, it's also entered my favourites of 2024.
Everything about this book worked for me. The main character's and the supporting cast we so well written and distinctive. The fun twist on the '13 going on 30' was really entertaining (I'm not even sure if I've watched the movie, but I now want to0. Nolan and Drew's romance was brilliant and complex, with the added layer of time travel adding it's own uniqueness. Nolan's family also played an important role and their dynamic was real and well done. This book also made me cry, and tear up multiple times, I truly cared for these characters.
If you follow my reviews, you’ll probably know that I’m a huge fan of Timothy Janovsky’s books. I loved Never Been Kissed when I read it last year and ended up adoring Matthew Prince. I really enjoy the romcom vibes of his books and they’re perfect for escapism. I’ve been super excited to read New Adult. It was pitched as 13 Going on 30 with time travel and romcom elements.
Nolan Baker is wannabe comedian struggling in New York City. Faced with his perfect sisters upcoming wedding, Nolan decided that comedy might not be in the cards for him after all, and plans to pack it up. First up: asking Drew Techler, how best friend, to be his date.
Unexpectedly, Nolan is offered a last-minute spot to fill in for a famous comedian, and selfishly decides to take it. This sends ends up sending him seven years into the future (where he is a successful comedian). Faced with a disappointed family and a scary new life, Nolan turns to his best friend for help… the man who is no longer talking to him and hates his guts.
Janovsky’s characters are always so lively and these were no different. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Nolan and Drew and thought it was really interesting how the author combined the friends to lovers trope with the hate to love trope. The time travel aspect was really fun but I adored how this book still felt like a good old contemporary romance.
The author is so good at combining humour and heart clenching scenes. I really appreciated the discussion of mental health and the depression rep. I’ll always be in favour of representing mental health in books because it’s something that just isn’t talked about enough. I really enjoyed the jumping through time and the exploration of how Nolan and Drew’s relationship changed at different points in their lives. Drew was my favourite character. I loved him and his little romance novels. The fact that the books he was reading changed based on what was going on in his life was marvellous. He falls into a depression over lost love and only reads moody mysteries? A total mood reader. I loved how everything came full circle at the end and he was back to romanticising everything.
This was another wonderful book by Timothy Janovsky that I would highly recommend. I really do enjoy his writing and I cannot wait to read his next book!
Thank you to Martina at Sourcebooks for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape for this amazing audiobook.
New Adult was a funny, sweet and inspiring story with major "13 (23) going 30" vibes and I ate it up!
Nolan is a 23 years old guy that just want to become the next big comedian. He lives in New York with his best friend Drew, which he is in love with but doesn't want to commit until he is living a fulfilled life with a thriving career. When Nolan perfect sister gets married he faces all his life struggles and the criticism from friend and family about his non existent career and general life choices, During the wedding, a big shot comedian calls Nolan to fit a spot in the show that will start in an hour and Nolan decides to leave his sister big day, his best friend and all his family to go and take a chance his dream.
I loved the dynamics that rises when Nolan wakes up 7 years after and realizes he was a shitty person, doesn't have a contact with anyone from his past and yes, he is a big shot comedian, rich and famous, but he is alone.
The love story between he and Drew is so sweet and warm. They are able to fall in love times and times again, even after Nolan behavior and Drew reluctance, even after time travels, and stolen kisses. 😭🥰
But this book is so much more than a love story in between two best friends. This book is about finding your place in the world, about knowing that family (the one you are given and the one you choose) is there for you no matter what, that sometimes we misinterpret our loved one actions just because we are different and face stuff in different ways.
Concluding I just can say that I really liked this book. I didn't give it 5 stars just because I would have liked a Drew pov at some point, but really it s a minor thing.
Also I loved the actor who gave voice to Nolan! he was sooo good and made me fall in love with both Nolan and Drew.
PS Drew is so perfect. I loved him from the first line. I fell in love with him with Nolan, all the times.

5 stars. Reminiscent of rom-com classics and packed with laughs and swoon, New Adult is a heartwarming triumph of a best friends to lovers romance that struck an unexpectedly personal chord with me.
People might disagree with me on this one but I like the author take on this 13 going on 30 retelling, instead of 13 year old character traveling to their 30 year old self instead it's a 23 year old hero waking as his 30 year old self, cause I never realized how weird it is to have a 13 year old mc waking up in her 30 year old so I'm glad the author change it as Nolan 23 years old waking up in his 30 year old self. Oh God do I love me a flawed character Here we followed Nolan, We can see his growth who's this indecisive nerve ball on the first couple of chapter maturing near the middle and through the end of the chapter which I love. The want and need is so obvious in this one but it doesn't really bother me at all Nolan thought he wanted all the fame to prove to drew and his family that he could make it and to make himself worthy but all he needed was them after all, but it was great I loved how rom-com coded this book is.
So good. Something that always impresses me about Janovsky’s work is how much genuine growth his characters go through; every beat of the story has a purpose. Even though Janovsky had warned me this one has more serious themes, I was still sucker-punched in the feels by the end. Beautifully done.
I loved this one. It has all the fun magic of my favorite time travel/body swap movies I grew up with but is also grounded in genuine emotion that 100% made me cry through the ending.
The story focuses on Nolan, an aspiring comedian, who is, of course, so focused on his professional ambitions that he forgets what really matters (how else do you set up a solid redemption arc?). When the components of a mysterious gift bag from his sister’s wedding have him time traveling, he finds himself transported to the life he thought he dreamed of. Now trapped seven years in the future, he seeks out the help of his former best friend to either fix the time line or find a way to reconcile and live in this new reality.
I really like the way that Janovsky can write an initially unlikeable main character and find a way to have you root for them by the end. This had a great friends-to-lovers (maybe also technically enemies-to-lovers) romance and some really moving moments where Nolan had to work to repair his relationships with his sister and parents.
Overall, I was just really swept away by this. It was well-paced, funny, and sweet. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Sourcesbooks Casablanca and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Timothy Janovsky perfects the rom-com in his latest novel, where comedian Nolan Baker is mystically transported seven years into the future and has everything he's ever wanted--except true love. Janovsky's voice is clever, sharp, and charming, perfect for the characters and story. I giggled my way through this book and will be singing it's praises into every stand up mic I can get my hands on! This is Janovsky's best work yet!
thank you to libro.fm for providing me an alc of this book!
i hadn’t read any books by timothy janovksy prior to new adult and in the span of a few hours am now fully convinced i need to delve into his entire backlog immediately
new adult has the most wonderful cast of characters and just the right touch of (literal) magic that it found its way onto my favorites shelf
the familial relationships were so beautiful, and the romance had my heart fluttering and breaking and fluttering again
i loved how nolan grew over the course of the story and watching him take responsibility for all of his actions was so gratifying as a reader. he was a well-fleshed out and realistically flawed main character that i still rooted for even when i was furious with him
above all, new adult reminded me to never waste a moment with my loved ones and to never take their presence and support for granted
highly recommend for a fun time and heartwarming moments <3
DNF almost immediately. Writing isn’t great. But it could be! No harm no foul, the author has potential but the errors are basic so I’ll circle back when he’s written some more stuff and try him again then.
[I received a digital arc for an honest review] New Adult is my favorite of the books Timothy Janovsky has written so far. I expected to enjoy it, but I didn't think I would love it as much as I did, especially since I'm not a fan of the movie 13 going on 30 lol
Nolan is 23 and like most 23-year-olds he's a little bit selfish and his focus on making it big as a comedian was believable. I saw some reviews complain that he gave up on his dream to easily in the end, but in my opinion the whole point of the story is for Nolan to really look at what matters most to him, Fame or Family. From the moment Nolan wakes up 7 years later , I was rooting for him to fix all the rash decisions past him made. I found the entire journey of him asking for forgiveness from the key players in his life, learning what really matters to him , and the chooses he makes in the end to be satisfying . I mean I could have done without the third act break up because that hurt my heart lol "Magic or not," he says, sinking down into the sheets beside me so we're eye-to-dazzling-eye, "our love is inevitable."
Usually I have trouble falling in love with both MCs when it's single point of view but I had no problem falling head over heals in love with Drew right from the start. It helps that Nolan's love for and regrets over him come across so genuine and honest. It also doesn't specifically say, but Drew gave off Demi vibes that made his love for Nolan even more special. I also appreciated that Drew had problems of his own that haunted him, he wasn't this perfect, flawless love interest. While Nolan is working on his inner self, Drew has a few things to work through on his own.
Overall, New Adult was a fantastic Queer romantic comedy. A best friend to lovers with pining, forgiveness, second chances, family, personal growth, a bit of steam, a fast-forward in time, and a HEA.
The early 2000’s rom-com vibes are immaculate in this queer 13 Going on 30 reimagining!
23 year old Nolan is in a slump. He’s waiting for his comedy career to take off so that he can finally prove to his family he’s got his life together and reveal his true feelings to his best friend Drew with a solid foundation to build their romantic relationship on. When he’s offered the career chance of a lifetime he chooses comedy over his friends and family… and then wakes up a famous comedian, 30 years old, and an absolute asshole that burned every bridge to every person he ever cared about.
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Nolan went on and the absolutely ADORABLE romance with Drew had me kicking and screaming through the vast majority of this book (all Janovsky books tend to have this effect).
I listened to the audiobook of this one and Mark Sanderlin did a fantastic job on the narration! His tone was perfect for this book!
Special thanks to Dreamscape Media for providing me with the audiobook of this one!
This was my first Timothy Janovsky book, and I am a convert. This was such a sweet, gay rom-com. One of my favorite movies is 13 Going on 30, so when I read the synopsis, I knew I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.
The story follows Nolan Baker as he tries to make a name for himself in the comedy world, but unbeknownst to him, his actions of always putting comedy first will have devastating consequences in his future. When he is magically transported seven years into the future, he is now a successful comedian but at a cost. Now, estranged from his family and best friend, he starts to come to terms with the fact that fame is not nearly as important if you don't have anyone to celebrate with.
Timothy does a great job of adding humor in between the heartfelt scenes to give readers a bit of a reprieve. The narrator was fantastic as well. The combination of both these talents created something fun and meaningful. I had so much fun listening to this wonderful, gay story, and I can't wait to read more by this author. I highly recommend this book!
Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for a chance to early review this story in exchange for an honest review.
*I received an advanced listening copy of this book via Libro.fm. This has not influenced my review.*
This is part of a series in which each book is about different characters, so this stands completely on its own. (I haven't read the others.)
It was a sweet story with touching character growth and a nice friends-to-lovers romance. It has just a touch of sci-fi/fantasy, since the premise involves the MC waking up seven years into the future. But despite the character having to struggle with that, it was pretty chill.
The audiobook narration by Mark Sanderlin was great, sounded super natural, and perfectly balanced the lighter and more serious elements of the story.
I really enjoyed this fluffy, time traveling, rom-com by @timothyjanovsky out next week! Can never go wrong with naming the adorkable/handsome love interest Drew! 😜
Nolan wants nothing more than to be a headlining comedian. He is so singular focused that he’s otherwise a 23yo mess, blowing off responsibilities, and accidentally hurting others. He’s desperately in love with his longtime best-friend/roommate, Drew, but doesn’t want to screw THAT up until he figures out everything else. After royally fumbling up his sisters wedding (skipping out to do a gig), he makes a wish upon some mysterious crystals, and wakes up seven years later.
The crux of the book is Nolan’s character growth, learning that success as the expense of others in his life, is not success at all - but it’s never too late to make changes (assuming he can make it back in time).
Drew is a great character that you can’t help wanting to root for. Even if Nolan is (intentionally) unlikable at times, their shared history make them a great match for each other.
Timothy is a blessed writer, bringing unique and quirky humor to his characters. I loved Never Been Kissed - but this might be my new favorite work of his. It’s just a while, romping, ride that will bring a smile to your face.
Looking forward to the book release at @eastcitybookshop next week.
𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘼𝙙𝙪𝙡𝙩 by Timothy Janovsky (2023) ★★★★✬ 4.5/5
Thanks to SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca and NetGalley for a chance to early review this story in exchange for an honest review.
This is hands down Timothy Janovsky’s finest work so far. I loved both Never Been Kissed and You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince -- but New Adult was next level.
I loved New Adult. So much. I am a big fan of 13 Going on 30 and was so enticed by the idea of a queer version of that story. It did not disappoint.
There was so much to love here. Most of all, the characters. Despite their questionable antics at times, they were loveable. They were well-developed, complex, and distinct. Nolan was a fascinating protagonist who had an emotional depth to him that made him so endearing. There was a whole lot of growth and redemption that made his story meaningful.
Also -- Drew? I would take a bullet for him (not really, but you know what I mean) -- what a MAN. He was a ray of sunshine throughout the book and I may be his biggest fan.
The overall plot had my emotions all over the place. It’ll have you feeling lighthearted, frustrated, secondhand-embarrassed, sometimes sad, and ultimately hopeful. I love when authors can invoke such a range of emotions with their writing. It means they're doing their job, and doing it well.
I couldn’t put this book down until I knew what happened – so I flew through it pretty quickly. (No spoilers, but I will say – I loved the ending that we got.) It has cemented Timothy Janovsky as an auto-buy author. His writing has a distinctness to it. A mix of levity, charm, and humor -- with just the right dose of seriousness and introspection.
Looking for a queer story that’s an ode to early 2000’s rom-coms? Look no further! This will warm your heart, make you laugh, and appreciate the loved ones in your life.

⚠️ 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: My review contains information about the book that may spoil the plot for some readers. I did not include anything not already included in the publisher's synopsis, but if you're sensitive to too much info before reading, please skip my review. 💕
📖𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: Nolan is feeling down and out... He's broke and struggling to make it as a comedian, and hasn't the courage to share his romantic feelings with his best friend, Drew. He just wishes he could fast-forward through these difficult years. When presented with some magic crystals, Nolan makes a wish to be older and successful... What he doesn't expect is for the wish to come true! When he wakes up at age 30 having achieved the financial and career success he's always dreamed of, he realizes the sacrifices it took to get there and reflects on what's truly important in life.
💭 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: This book was such a joy! It's being described as a queer 13 Going on 30 and that's an apt comparison. I really love the magical realism component and the slow-burn friends-to-enemies-to-lovers between Nolan and Drew. And though this was largely a light and funny romantic comedy, it also tackles some deeper issues with many important life lessons.
🎧 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸: I really enjoyed the audiobook of Janovsky's holiday romcom "You're a Mean One Matthew Prince", so when I saw this one was also narrated by Mark Sanderlin, I downloaded it immediately! 🙌🏼 Sanderlin really brought these characters to life and made this such a great listen! Color me a fan!
I definitely recommend New Adult in either format.
Oh my goodness, this book. It was my first by Timothy Janovsky and definitely not my last. I enjoyed it so, so much!
Friends To Lovers fans, you're going to require this book in your lives! Nolan and Drew are such fantastic characters. I admired both of them in very different ways. I love a RomCom with depth, and New Adult has it in spades!
This book has: Comedy Redemption Family Dynamics Gorgeous Chemistry Time Travel A Book Store 13 Going On 30 Vibe Character Growth RuPaul's Drag Race (And SO much more!!)
I'm fairly new to time travel and books and have to say I REALLY enjoy it! It brings a whole other layer and I'm here for it! I love a bit of magic.
Although New Adult is part of a series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone. I would like to go back and read the other two books though.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for this gifted copy!
I was so excited when I saw this book because it sounded very similar to 13 Going on 30 which is a comfort movie. However, the moment I started reading, that excitement died.
Before my rant begins, here's a long-winded summary of the plot. Nolan wants to be a comedian and has a 7-year plan. At his sisters' wedding when he's basically given up on his dream, he gets the phone call. Cue Nolan leaving the wedding and his best friend he just kissed to do an opener (instant eye roll). Everyone in his life obviously had a reasonable reaction to his decision, and cut him off. That night he finds crystals (doesn't matter from where) that claim to manifest the future. He puts them under his pillow and the next day wakes up 7 years in the future. There he's famous and successful, but his best friend and family hate him, understandably.
The first 100 pages (aka the introduction part before the time skip) were absolute torture to get through. I hated it so much, especially Nolan and his dumbass decisions. Insert Tiktok sound "I hear this grating voice". I had to really push myself to read since I try to not DNF arcs.
When we finally get to the future, it was a much better read but also, anything is better than the absolute shit that was the first third. Nolan goes through a whole character arc within a day, which made little sense to me. But objectively Nolan was much less annoying as a character so the book was readable although very predictable.
As for the romance, it was mediocre at best. Drew, from what I read, was a decent person and deserved better. Also, their chemistry wasn't there for me.
The last gripe for me was that, for a book about a comedian, this was aggressively unfunny. Especially Nolan's shit jokes.
Overall, I can understand why 90% of the other people who've read this enjoyed this but personally, this was not for me.
This ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m a lover of all genres and I particularly love it when they mix a few genres together, so finding this contemporary romance with a side of magical realism had me intrigued from the minute I read the blurb. New Adult by Timothy Janovsky is part of his Boy Meets Boy series of standalone novels. It follows Nolan Baker, who after making a risky career move is magically transported 7 years into the future where he’s living his dream life as a famous comedy star. He has everything he’s dreamed of; crazy fans, a perfect apartment and more money than he could have ever imagine, expect he realises he’s now estranged from his family and best friend/true love Drew and would do anything to take it all back.
This novel had a grip on me from the start and I read it quite quickly. I’m a big fan of short chapters that keep me wanting more and New Adult absolutely hit the mark with that one. The journey and development of the main character, Nolan, was inspiring and heartwarming. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a feel good LGBTQIA novel.
Thank you so much to SourceBooks and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this eARC for review.
I post about diverse & queer novels @niksreadss on Instagram
Read an ARC of this, coming out in August. I absolutely adored this, it was a perfect blend of so many of my favorite things - a great growth arc for one hero, a sweetheart cinnamon roll for the other, some laughs and a little bit of magic.
Nolan is a struggling stand-up comedian, barely making ends meet and pining over his roommate and best friend, Drew. After making an impulsive choice that prioritizes his career over his family and friends, Nolan is suddenly thrust seven years forward in time into the life that results. He tracks down the now-estranged Drew who agrees to help him find a way back despite his fear of being hurt again, and of course while unraveling the solution they fall in love.
This book hit wonderfully heartwarming notes of family, nostalgia, and what’s really important in life without feeling saccharine. It also kept the focus on the romance and made me laugh along the way, which is a really hard balance to strike.
Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Casa, Netgalley, and Libro.fm for providing advanced copies of this!! All thoughts and opinions are still my own.
A gay, hallmark movie-esque mashup between 13 Going on 30 and a Christmas Carol. And mushy, adorable, romantic perfection.
This is one of those stories that leaves you all warm and fuzzy after reading. It's sweet, it's charming, and it leaves you believing that people really can change for the better.
Our main character Nolan is a selfish, hot mess muppet at the beginning of the book. He has a chip on his shoulder about how people treat his career aspirations and is willing to drop anything and everything to prove them wrong.
With his sister's wedding only adding to his stress, Nolan makes bad decision after bad decision. Leaving him alone and miserable after disappointing everyone he loves most. But with the help of his sister's odd guru company and some mysterious crystals, he finds himself 7 years in into his "ideal" future.
Even more alone and bitter, Nolan sets out to try and find his way back. And maybe right some wrongs along the way. Including fixing the very broken relationship between him and his best friend, Drew. The man he's also in love with.
Nolan's personal growth through this was fantastic. At 23, he's struggling to figure out what is important to him and how to balance all the aspects of his life. He's so driven by the desire to prove people wrong and be successful that he's ruining his relationships.
And his slow burn, friends to lovers romance with Drew gave me butterflies. They are endlessly supportive (even when one of them confesses to being sent to the future via crystals).
I also really liked the discussions of none romantic relationships in here. Nolan isn't only ruining his chances at romantic love, but also friendships and familial ones as well. And few things are more adorable than Nolan teaching his 3 year old niece the appropriate way to deliver a knock knock joke.
Overall I just had the best time with this sweet romance. I think it had some amazing discussions, complex main characters, and a romance guaranteed to give you butterflies.
Content warnings: Alzheimer's, Recreational drugs, Hospitalization, Death of a parent (past, off page, side character)
Ah, what a gem of a book! I honestly can't decide what I liked more, the friends to lovers, second chance romance between the main character and his best friend, or the complicated, but ultimately heartwarming sibling dynamic between the main character and his sister. I think Timothy Janovsky perfectly weaved these two subplots and the end result was marvelous. That's what I call craftsmanship.
This is the story of Nolan Baker, a 23 year old aspiring comedian, living in New York and trying to make it big in the industry. He is such a conflicting character, I honestly had a hard time deciding if I like him or despise him for the ill timed decisions he makes. While I understood his desire to show people around him that he's not a nobody and that he can succeed in the career choice he made, I also wanted to shake him and make him realise that his dream of becoming a famous comedian isn't what life is all about. Family is always more important.
I absolutely loved the use of magic and time travel. Nolan goes 7 years into the future with the help of some mysterious crystals. Once there, he realises that his biggest dream has come true, but at what cost?! His redemption arc is absolutely exquisite, I teared up several times because my god, he was so relatable in his struggles to prove himself. But alas, he realises that putting his career before anything else isn't the best life choice.
I loved the entire concept of the book, but my favourite part was definitely the last quarter where he starts mending relationships and setting new priorities. It was such an emotional journey.
And don't get me started on the love interest, Drew Techler. What a freaking gem of a human. So shy and nerdy and supportive and absolutely amazing. Their friendship was precious. The side characters were wonderful, as well. I especially loved CeeCee. I think the discussion of sibling rivalry was spot on. I loved every interaction they had, their connection made me very emotional because well, I have an older sister and I couldn't possibly imagine getting on her bad side and not having her in my life.
Timothy Janovsky was already am autobuy author for me, but this book solidified his place in my top 10 favourite m/m romance authors.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the digital arc.
