Super-sizing apex predators is never a good idea, and weaponizing them is even worse.
Something in South Texas is leaving a bloody trail of human wreckage in its wake. Jake Jessup and April Flowers investigate and uncover the most dangerous mutant Section 17 has ever created. But four-hundred fifty-pound monsters are the least of their worries when the pair stumble onto a government conspiracy that could cost them their lives and shake the very foundation of the country.

Good book. The only problem with it was that the focus was mainly on terrorists, instead of the mutant animals. It's noteworthy that Section 17 doesn't seem to be like a covert organization of the federal government, anymore. Now it seems to practically resemble an organized crime syndicate and terrorist group. Think about it, Derrick Flattner has bribed officials, trafficked, mutated and abused animals, used illegal bio-weapons and weaponized animals, made deals with shady rich people and even criminals, murdered many people to protect Section 17's interests and for his own benefit, and resorted to corruption, propaganda, terrorism, treachery and abuse of power to achieve his goals. By now, even a man like Dotson is starting to see just how corrupt Section 17 has become. Personally, I think Section 17's methods, although questionable, aren't completely wrong. I think the true problem lies within the leadership of that covert organization. The true problems are Derrick Flattner and his ilk, and they need to be eradicated as soon as possible. Hopefully, Derrick will meet his comeuppance soon.
I love dangerous creature books and movies, and CROCUTA did not disappoint.
This agency, a secret part of Homeland Security, was called Section 17. They bred, mutated and raised/trained naturally aggressive animals, for purposes of killing in war or policing drug trafficking. Section 17 had monster spotted hyenas, 400 lbs pit bulls and unnaturally large pigs. The trainers wore glove of chain mail on their hands. The glove facilitated giving orders. They were trained by playing and gradually worked to take commands. Section 17 was used for illegal purposes, for example, a senator wanted the Section 17 animals to run false flag operations that made him look good and raise money. People died so he was the opposite.
This time the mutant creature is hyena or crocuta, which were you want to call it. The hyenas don't play a very big part in the story, but when they do it is not good. This time the monsters are the men, who think that they can do anything they want and getaway with it. To say that this book was a good one kind of calls short of the mark. The plot was great and it was just not a one view story. At times during the action parts you get to see it from both sides of the action. I did have a small problem when I felt the author was getting a bit preachy and kind of let in some views peek out, but I just took in stride and said let us get on with stopping the bad guys. Now I can't wait for the next book, which for me is actually the sixth book, to read. Also at the rate Mr. Tilton is writing these book we just might find ourselves up to the north end of South bound mule in mutant creatures.
Another exciting book! Full of suspense, drama, and a little humor. Another book the reader could not put down. I had to keep reading until I reached the end. This series is so good I may have to give up sleeping! Each book keeps getting better and better. The continuity is excellent. I feel like the main characters are old friends. I have read five books in this series so far. I realize that they were not in order, but they are still very good reading. The level of excitement and suspense is awesome! This last book is like going back and filling in some of background information. It did not detract from the excitement and enjoyment of the series. Maybe numbering the books in the proper order would help? Just a suggestion.
I have been reading this series for a bit of time now. It reads fast because it's interesting and entertaining. I'm onto the next book in this series before I get to bed. Thanks for writing. Hope you figure out how to keep this series going for a while longer!
This book sets itself apart from the others. A lot more action and blood and guts (which I enjoy). A little more complicated but a good book nonetheless. And to quote Mikey "try it you will like it" oh boy starting to show my age now. Thank you Russ for some kick butt books. Please keep them coming.
It's rare that the combination of likeable good guys is married to interesting bad guys. Makes for good reading and anticipation of the next stop in the saga.
This series is all too realistic, both referencing people and their ethics ( and lack thereof), and the possibilities of genetic manipulation in animals and weaponization. A frightening and entirely plausible reality and very well written!
There was a lot of action. I loved the characters, they were described well and I felt like I was at a movie. The books were unexpectedly interesting. I can't to read more.
The characters are a bit cardboard. The books need more time with the animals. More interaction and focus on the species being used. I did enjoy the books, book 5 already downloaded, but more depth to the animals would be awesome.
This was kind of creepy. These new animals were fairly scary and very obedient. Really added a new element as all the others were so easy to lose control.
I'm getting more terrified of large animals the more I read Tilton's series. Now I don't want to see a hyena even in a zoo! More scary critters in this book with a promise of more to come!
This book was fun! It focuses on the characters rather than the animals. There was a lot of government agency vs agency action. It wasn’t very action packed but towards the end of the book it gets crazy.
This series is always leading with very interesting stories. I am waiting excitedly for the introduction of the next creature. Very detailed and crafted suspense.
I will certainly read the next one and probably the remainder of the series. Exciting to the very end, though not much Crocuta Crocuta time in this book.
In the fourth book in this series, the monsters are heavily mutated Hyenas. Jessup and Flowers travel to Texas to investigate some gruesome murders, and as usual, Section 17 are involved. This series is a bit hard for me to rate, as I both love it and hate parts of it. The story and the monsters are very cool, although you really have to see it as sci-fi more than anything else, since the science isn't really all that great. But the characters are way too flat for me, if they had just den a bit more fleshed out it could have actually given this series a bit of depth.
