Frankenstein's Cat

Rate this book
Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. Because Frankenstein's cat is no ordinary Dr. Frankenstein names his new creation Nine -- not because cats have "nine lives," but because that's how many cats it takes to make him. However, Nine isn't terribly popular at the castle, and he's lonely. So the doctor creates a companion who turns out to be more than Frankenstein's cat bargained for. Curtis Jobling has created a delightful feline hero in Frankenstein's cat. Readers will be laughing out loud at Nine's desire to be normal in a far from normal world.

Curtis Jobling is an author and illustrator based in the UK. Working in publishing and animation he is possibly most (in)famously known as the designer of the BAFTA winning "Bob The Builder", as well as creator of CBeebies "Raa Raa the Noisy Lion" and CBBC's "Frankenstein’s Cat". Early work in animation included model and puppet painting on Wallace & Gromit’s "A Close Shave" and Tim Burton’s "Mars Attacks!" He’s also the creator/director/producer of Nickelodeon’s "Curious Cow" interstitials, a series of animated shorts featuring the varied and hilarious deaths of a bewildered bovine.

As a published author and illustrator of children’s books, Curtis’s works include Dinosaurs After Dark (with Jonathan Emmett), Skeleton in the Closet (with Alice Schertle), My Daddy, Cheeky Monkey and perhaps his most notorious character Frankenstein’s Cat, now an animated series in its own right commissioned by the BBC and sold to broadcasters worldwide.

The Wereworld series of novels were first published by Penguin in the UK in January 2011, with "Rise of the Wolf", the first in the fantasy horror, shortlisted for the Waterstone's Book Prize. Penguin/Viking first published the debut novel in September 2011.

We all know Dr Frankenstein and his monster; some would say he was a misunderstood, possibly mad, doctor. Well, now meet Frankenstein's Cat!

It transpires that the monster was not Frankenstein's first experiment, his cat was and he was called Nine. Not Nine because cats are reputed to have nine lives, but nine because that is the number of cats that were used to create him.

Nine wanted to be friendly so he tried being nice to the cook in the kitchen but that did not work; he tried befriending the village children who were playing hide and seek - they sent Nine to hide and then they themselves disappeared as they did not want anything to do with him. He tried again, this time with the butler but he dismissed him with short shrift.

Puzzled as to what to do he had a brainwave and returned to the doctor and asked him to make him a friend. The doctor set about his task while Nine sat back and hoped that he was going to make his friend a female cat. No such luck, the doctor proudly made Fifi but, to Nine's dismay, she was not a cat!

She was a ... well, the story tells all and the moral at the end simply states, 'What you get isn't always what you ask for.' How true and poor old Nine ...

This is a very unique and entertaining book that students will love. It's a great story to teach about friendship and accepting others. The cat is unwanted and this is the story of her trying to get a friend. The book doesn't have a happy ending and the cat ends up being chased around by a zombie dog, but a friend is a friend!
This is a cute little book that students would love to read on their own. They would love the illustrations and the zombie animals!

A fantastic idea and a super cool author. This book is now an animated cartoon on BBC tv. I hope that it comes to the US. Thanks Curtis!
