Can a literary bluestocking and a battle-hardened soldier write themselves a new future together? Miss Alice Boyd is a confirmed spinster who lives her life through the written word. She feels most comfortable on the edges of society, and writing her first novel is the perfect pursuit to keep her there.
Captain Avril is one of Wellington's returned soldiers. The brave Scot fought and survived many skirmishes against the French, but discovering his betrothed has married his best friend is the hardest battle he has ever faced.
As if this is not enough for one man to handle, Miss Boyd is determined to challenge and enrage him at every turn. The fierce and meddlesome little bluestocking will not allow him to wallow in his misery.
To gain a future, Captain Avril must face his past. To capture his heart, Alice must be braver than she ever imagined she could be. Alice may be ready for her first adventure, but it will take more than a grand gesture to bring these two troubled souls together and secure their happy ending.
The Bluestocking’s Highlander is a Regency Romance, topped with a generous amount of humour, action and tears. If you like simmering chemistry, compelling but complex characters and fast-paced action, then this is the perfect book for you. Book three of the Bluestocking Club.
Audrey Harrison was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh.
In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest.
Her ideal would be to write Regency Romances, but more modern characters are insisting on being heard, hence the release of’ ‘A Very Modern Lord’, a contemporary romance.
So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and tea is still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?
This is my first book of the series and it is for the most part a stand alone. The only part I was lost in was the very beginning. The h is in bed having a big lump on her head with the H worrying about her. It would have been nice to know what transpired for her to have a lump! The h/H obviously had some history prior but no idea what.
The H is from Scotland and the only dialogue that he says is Lassie - lol. I did enjoy the interaction between our main characters. The secondary characters are interesting too.
One nasty person shows her true colors in the beginning and never tries to be something other than a manipulative "B." I figured out where the author was going when she was introduced and thought here we go....but, surprise big twist I didn't see coming - bravo Audrey!
Then there's another villain who doesn't show his colors until the end - our h was no wilting flower in handling him!
I enjoyed this story and have already preordered the next in the series. No cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple but something unsolved with another couple, HEA, romantic, great dialogue and only kisses. At times, filled with suspense wondering how the H was going to handle his life.
I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some tidbits to decide to purchase or not. (ljb)

Will being too honorable the right answer when love is at stake …
So far, this book is my favorite in this series, but I have high expectations about Hamish’s story which is coming next. The book begins in some way where the previous ended, with James and Alice sharing their feelings for one another. I loved how she took him to task, she is not a woman to cower, she goes for what she wants and is not afraid to make demand. And while it quite complicated their life to them both, it also was the right thing to do. Alice is not a woman who seeks the light, she just hopes to be able to make her dreams come true. She loves to write and wants her work to move beyond being seen as a simple entertainment. She has been contented with what life had in stock for her until now, meeting James, has opened a wider window of what could be, if she could be certain to be the only woman he longs for. James has wallowed in his own misery since his return from war, betrayed by his friend and his first love, he has lost all will to continue, how he came to cross path with Alice as she was helping her friend in her special project of offering a shelter to soldiers coming back from war with no prospect or purpose. The attraction is instant but Alice is not a woman to mince her words. She wants him to sort out his feelings about the woman who failed him before they enter into any agreement.
From this start, they are in for a wild journey as they cross path with the ghost of his past, meet new foes and make new friends too. James is honorable to a fault, too much even. While Alice is honest and straightforward about what she wants. From the wild of the highlands to the ton’s ballrooms or Wauxhall, their journey is paved with obstacles, forceful ominous people and cheering friends determined else to tear them apart or to see them reunited.
I can not wait to read James’ brother Hamish story, he was so much fun here. 4.5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I read a lot of cute historical romances. Most are steamy but not all. The cute, wholesome onces better have tension/longing/etc to keep the romance alive if no spice.
Unfortunately the attempt at tension was just the most unheroic mmc ever. He already found our FMC prior to the book starting as he was a drunk/trauma from returning to war. Found out her girl cheated and married his best friend. Yeah that horrible and our FMC helping him move on is great but I didn't need an entire story focused on him going home to "find closure".
What closure does anyone need on a girlfriend who got knocked up and married another guy??? Like she's a witch and move on dude. Why open old wounds?? Yet our FMC insisted he go and well that turns into a whole debacle (of the rest of the book).
I truly eye rolled this story as the main hook with kinda pointless imo. Maybe there are people out there who need to be beat over the head with how horrible their ex is to learn?? Like cheater is a cheater and move on.
I loved Alice’s and James story. He is haunted by what he experienced in war and what happened at home when he returned. Alice is helping her friend with her new project of a Solider’s refuge and writing her novel when she meets Capt. Arvil, James. When Alice is attacked and Arvil stays by her side, he realizes how much he loves her. When Alice wakes up she tells James that she is not going to play second fiddle to his old love and that he needs to go home a settle things before they can be together. When James leaves to go home, Alice realizes she needs to follow. When James arrives home he finds out that his best friend Simon who married the woman he thought he loved had died. Then Constance shows up like she owns his parents home and wants James to marry her. With so many lies he is not sure what is going on. A beautifully written story with a wonderful ending.
Book 3 is 5 STARS of suprise, mystery, suspension, and some crazy enlightenment. This storyline is fast paced with lots of action & filled with all kinds of emotions and is from the Series: A Regency Romance(The Bluestocking Club).
In fact the girls from the club had been doing so well & getting so much attention that the younger newer debutantes were starting to spread evil untrue things about them, that could not be narrowed down.
A writer, Alice and a Highlander from Scotland, Captain James Arvill meet in an amusing way over a housekeeper in an argument with him over his kilt while he takes a bath. One of the best scenes I have had the joy to ever read.
These two go through trials & tribulations turmoil in their souls than most. This is a worthy read. I must say I have known & know several Constances and wished I hadn't known any of them. Of course by other names.
I loved this book. The only drawback was how long the two main characters had to finally get their act together. I liked the idea of Lydia returning from book 2 with her sanctuary for struggling veterans from the war against Napoleon. Also, the struggles that Alice went through to get a book published (with her own name on the cover, too!) I look forward to book 4 with James's big brother, Hamish, and Alice's friend, Serena.
This was an enjoyable tale of when a bluestocking writer meets gruff attractive highlander! They are instantly attracted to one another but James is fighting the memories of his past and in order to find happiness with Alice, he must go back home to Scotland and sort it all out! Alice refuses to be his second choice. Sparks fly in all directions when the relationships in this book come to a head. This story has serious parts but is also sprinkled with humour!
I almost didn't finish this book all because of James and his family's ridiculous behavior in regard to Constance. Although I know this really happens in real life situations it still angers me when people are so gullible to obvious mental anguish. Soooo, I pressed on reading with hope that James love for Alice would persevere and they could have their happily ever after. Just so happens, it was Alice and Hamish's (James brother) love for James that led to the happy ending I wanted for them.
This is number three in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved both the main characters and I thought the story was well put together until the end. When we got to the romance and it ended so sharply and I was very disappointed as Audrey is usually so brilliant with epilogues.
Another excellent story in this great series. The interactions between James and Alice are funny, entertaining, and occasionally heartbreaking. Lost a star because the whole Constance business was a good plot line, but written in such a way as to be not quite believable. Regardless, this book is highly recommended
Silly and unlikely as the plot devices are, they are rooted in well-developed characters, and disclosed in excellent English. I’m certain you will enjoy a good laugh and keep reading!
A delightful cast of characters. A satisfying conclusion . An enticing curiosity to see what kind of trouble big brother will have in the next BLUESTOCKING book!
Entretenido. Quizás sería un 3,5 no un 4… xq esta muuuy claro desde el principio pero hay muchas idas y venidas y… entretenido :)) Capitan Avril (escocés) y Alice, escritora
The H was a complete dumbass and did not deserve h. The other guy shouldn't have been given the classical villain trope and she should've ended up with him.
