Susan Adriani has been a fan of Jane Austen and her beloved characters for as long as she can remember. Originally from New England, she attended a small art college close to her home, where she majored in illustration. In 2007, after contemplating the unexplored possibilities in one of Miss Austen’s most celebrated novels, Pride and Prejudice, she began to write her first novel-length story, The Truth About Mr. Darcy (previously self-published as Affinity and Affection). With encouragement from fellow Austen enthusiasts she continued, and is currently at work on her second book. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, young daughter, and a very impertinent cat.

"Before I even understood what I was searching for, it seems that I found it here, and I no longer wish to leave." (quote from the book)

This collection of nine romantic short stories featuring Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet was superb! I loved each and every one of them for their unique plots and wonderfully romantic scenes together. All are beautifully written and each struck a chord with me. These authors have tapped into their imaginations and provided a delightful mix of clever, funny, poignant, sweet, naughty, and moving renderings that made each one very enjoyable. There is Elizabeth at her wittiest, Mr. Darcy at his best and one story has Lady Catherine at her worst! The yearning is palpable and the love sublime. What more could one ask for? More! Always more!

Just let your love flow like a mountain stream
And let your love grow with the smallest of dreams

Songwriter: Jerry Williams Jr.

Well, some of us like love stories!

“An Inducement into Matrimony” has nine love stories from nine favorite authors.

Let your love fly like a bird on a wing
And let your love bind you to all living things

Songwriter: Jerry Williams Jr.

This is a collection of stories from Quills and Quartos originally published online. Now the stories are edited, proofread, and published together. Authors include Susan Adriani, Jan Ashton, Paige Badgett, Kay Bea, Gaille Ruth Caress, Amy D’Orazio, Nan Harrison, Michelle Ray, and Mary Smythe. All these authors have published other highly-rated books.

Short-story writing is a talent all its own. Eliminating unnecessary subplots, including the essentials, telling just one story, and wrapping up the final scene takes a special skill.

Some of these stories have been among my personal favorite online stories. Some were new to me. I recommend all of them to fellow JAFF lovers.

So let that wonder take you into space
And lay you under its loving embrace
Just feel the thunder as it warms your face
You can't hold back.

A Wonderful Collection
Inspired by Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, An Inducement into Matrimony is a wonderful compilation of short stories that all culminate in Elizabeth and Darcy reaching an understanding, and which feature nine authors from Quills and Quartos Publishing. As such, you can be assured of another Q in the mix—Quality. Since other reviewers have already provided good summaries of each story, I thought I would feature some favourite quotes to change things up a bit. A delightful volume guaranteed to provide hours of reading pleasure, I highly recommend it.

Sixteen Days at Pemberley, Susan Adriani
“You welcomed my society with pleasure, yet I did not know whether that pleasure was afforded to your friend or your lover—No. Not to your lover. To your husband.” He paused. “I have long known my own heart, Elizabeth, but I do not know yours.” — quote from book

The Pleasure of Understanding Her, Mary Smythe
“What in creation is happening to me? It seems utter madness, but I believe I can hear the thoughts of those around me! Have I lost my mind? Or could it possibly be real?” — quote from book

The Heart’s Consent, Paige Badgett
“Can the end of a great love kill a person?” — quote from book

“Elizabeth had come to his home, and he threw her out, and she left to accept another man. He pounded his fist on the soft velvet seat of his coach as he rode through Mayfair. He had made a complete muddle of everything.” — quote from book

No Charm Equal - Jan Ashton
“With one gloved finger, he traced her hand. “I have never had to know my own heart and will admit, and only to you, that it has proved wiser and gained in happiness because it welcomed you.”” — quote from book

United by Happenstance, Gailie Ruth Caress
“His hand came down over hers, covering her knuckles warmly, then threading between her digits softly, calming her. “It will look as though I loved you, Elizabeth. And that is the reality.””

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance, Amy D’Orazio
“Darcy shook his head. “Leave it, Saye. This is no laughing matter.” “Everything is a laughing matter if you tell it with spirit.”” — quote from book

Speaking the Truth, Nan Harrison
“You are handsome enough to tempt me—to dance with, to walk with, to argue with, to play backgammon with…to marry…” — quote from book

Duet in Dispute, Michelle Ray
“It was just Mr Darcy and me, and a tune that was beginning to form in my mind…a light tune on the piano flitting about, then an oboe, serious and reserved. A perfect duet. The sounds of how we met and fell in love.” - quote from book

What Might Have Been, Kay Bea
“She could not resist looking down on the street from her window. She pressed her palm against the pane and felt her heart shatter as she watched him leave the inn, mount his horse, and ride away without looking back.” — quote from book

A Collection of Romantic Short Stories Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

>>Rating: clean with a couple of exceptions: slight language with a few hints at inappropriate behavior in another. I mean, you have the SBRB on the loose. You have to expect he and the little tart will run off in at least one story. Nothing was described or graphic. There was an attempt at a compromise but was not successful.
>>Angst Level: low with the exception of a couple of stories where I: lost my breath, broke out in a sweat, swooned, and needed Gorilla Glue to fix my fan… again. Q&Q owes me a new fan… just saying.
>>Source: I received an ARC via Booksprout [9-27-22] for an honest review. The views and opinions expressed are my own and freely given.

1) Sixteen Days at Pemberley: Susan Adriani: 5-chapters
Post Kent: Whew! That final declaration… Oh-My-Goodness! I needed my fan. I broke out in a nervous sweat. It was that good… so sweet.

2) The Pleasure of Understanding Her: Mary Smythe: 5-chapters
Netherfield while Jane was ill: Darcy suffered a migraine and suddenly could hear other’s thoughts. Help me! Whew! Seriously, I don’t know if I have enough Gorilla Glue to salvage my fan. Darcy had the opportunity to get to know Elizabeth better and her thoughts about him.

3) Heart’s Consent: Paige Badget: 3-chapters
Grief! High Angst! Goodness, this was torture, I thought they would never get together. Whew! I am still trembling. I may start drinking. Seriously.

4) No Charm Equal: Jan Ashton: 6-chapters
Netherfield: while Jane was ill. The ladies returned home and Collins arrived. Most of the militia had left for Brighton so we didn’t have the SBRB. Thank you, very much, Jan Ashton. This story was ‘CHARM’ at its best. OH, MY! The declarations just get better and better. Heavy sigh.

5) By Happenstance: Gailie Ruth Caress: 7-chapters
Kent: Post-DHP [Disastrous Hunsford Proposal] and Darcy’s letter: Illness in the Gardiner household keep Maria and Lizzy in Kent for several additional weeks. We now have Lady Catherine transporting them to London in her barouche box. The dear lady could not pass by Darcy House without calling on her niece. Well, that was a different visit than the grand lady envisioned. Whew!

6) The First Moment of Their Acquaintance: Amy D’Orazio: 10-chapters
One-month post-DHP: OMG! I laughed my head off. I forgot about Lord Saye. Thank you, Amy, for including that rascal in your segment. I love him. This was hilarious. Poor Bingley. NEVER ever involve Bingley in secret machinations. He is incapable of deception.

7) Speaking The Truth: Nan Harrison: 6-chapters
Post-Netherfield Ball: Mrs. Bennet arranged for them to be the last to leave. Elizabeth was horrified by their behavior while her father thought it was an entertaining spectacle. This led to several new twists in the outcome of our story. Heavy sigh. It was so good.

8) A Duet in Dispute: Michelle Ray: 5-chapters
OMG! I wanted to cry. The SBRB struck again and in such a creative way. Although this one hurt, it ended well.

9) What Might Have Been: Kay Bea: Prologue + 5-chapters
Lambton Inn with Elizabeth reading Jane’s letter about Lydia and the SBRB [scum-bag-rat-bastard]. When Darcy came to call, she told the servant she was not available and sent him away. We then switch several years in the future and the fallout and consequences of that event. Whew! That was tough.

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars

Nice collection of short stories by established JAFF authors. All are beautifully written and well-edited, and more than half have interesting and intriguing plots. Some of the stories lack much in the way of dramatic tension or build-up to a recognizable turning point, making them too predictable for my personal taste, but even those do well in providing the romantic chemistry between Darcy and Elizabeth that's evident throughout the entire anthology.

A collection of nine entertaining short stories, some definitely left me wanting more, all of them were a delight to read. I won’t summarize each one as other reviewers have done a thorough job of that. I’ll just mention three of my favorites: The Pleasure of Understanding Her, where Darcy can suddenly hear what people are thinking; No Charm Equal where Darcy bares his heart at the Netherfield Ball; and The First Moment of Their Acquaintance where Viscount Saye and Colonel Fitzwilliam convince Darcy to pretend to be a different man (cousin William Darcy) and return to Netherfield for Elizabeth. This collection of stories was excessively diverting and I’m sure that I’ll return to them again and again for my Darcy and Lizzy fix.

I received an eARC from the publisher via Booksprout and voluntarily leave this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sixteen Days at Pemberley by Susan Adriani: Post the Hunsford proposal. Elizabeth, as in canon, travels with her aunt and uncle to Derbyshire. They tour Pemberley and meet Darcy, who visits them at their inn the next day and invites them to stay at Pemberley during their sojourn in the area. So it is that Elizabeth becomes friends with Georgiana, Bingley decides to return to Netherfield sans his sisters and Hurst and ODC spend time together during which Elizabeth comes to realize that her feelings have changed. There is a thread dealing with Lydia’s desire to travel to Brighton with Mrs. Forster.

Page 36, The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Symthe: Elizabeth is staying at Netherfield to nurse her sister, Jane. Darcy suffers from a migraine which gives him the ability to hear others’ thoughts. Even Caroline’s are a surprise to him. Elizabeth’s are the opposite of what he expected – can he change those?

Page 80, The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett: Elizabeth is being courted by another man but thoughts of Darcy have her showing up at his house on the pretext of visiting Georgiana. That puts into motion Darcy’s own regrets of the proposal she rejected. This story has Elizabeth taking things into her own hands AFTER she has in fact accepted that other man. All three in this triangle takes some steps to show they will not be ignored.

Page 120, No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton: Jane and Elizabeth return home after Jane’s illness at Netherfield. Darcy detects more about Jane than in canon and so he does not encourage Bingley to leave Netherfield. We read many thoughts and conversations between Darcy and Elizabeth. She tries to interpret what his staring is all about while he is charmed by their debates and conversations. As the Ball come about both have made more progress towards understanding each other.

Page 168, United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress: Learning that the Gardiner household is infected by a contagious illness, Elizabeth and Maria have to stay longer in Kent. So it is that Lady Catherine decides to take them back to London. And as they go to Darcy House it is there that she renders ODC a great service. Lady C. senses something is between them and attacks Elizabeth’s integrity, her morality and, of course, Darcy must stand with Elizabeth in defense. She and he then clear the air as to where their feelings stand when they discuss his aunt’s accusations, and he then takes her to Gracechurch Street.

Page 214, The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio: Set after his failed proposal. Believing Elizabeth would not give him even one glance, much less a chance to speak with her, Darcy decides to become his own “cousin”, one William Darcy, to perhaps have her see a new man and learn to “like” him. He, Bingley and the Colonel go over the details and how to agree on their story. So it is that Darcy learns more about what Elizabeth really thought of him from the “first moment”.

Page 272, Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison: We begin as the ball at Netherfield ends, with Mrs. Bennet having arranged that their carriage is called last, when it is discovered to have a broken wheel. Elizabeth is embarrassed by her mother’s manipulation, much less her loud exclamations, etc. so she sets off to walk home. Darcy learns of this and immediately sets out after her. He catches up and offers some physical comfort with his coat and cloak while also being verbally abused concerning his (and Caroline’s) obvious opinions and plans to separate Bingley and Jane. Darcy does not return to London with the Bingley party. As he stays in the area he also learns much more about Elizabeth and her opinions and finally gets past his own prejudices concerning her family.

Page 314, Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray: This Elizabeth has a talent of composing music. Her dream is to compose and perform her own music. At a house party to which she and Jane have been invited, Darcy comes upon her performing in the music room. They become more than friends, but Darcy cannot accept her performing in public as society would not look favorably upon such by a woman and so she turns down his proposal. When her family objects she flees to London. There she meets Wickham who claims to also love to compose and perform. His true nature comes out, but Darcy helps to take care of that matter and then offers her a chance to fulfill her dream. The question at the end is whether she will hold on to that dream or modify it to suit another dream…of being a wife and mother.

Page 360, What Might Have Been by Kay Bea: This story has a dreadful, sad start as while Elizabeth is visiting in Lambton with her aunt and uncle, she receives that letter from Jane informing her of Lydia’s elopement with Wickham. However, in this story she does not inform Darcy but rather refuses to see him when he arrives at the inn in which they are staying.

Things go downhill quickly. Lydia is never found, and Mrs. Bennet has not kept that matter a secret so the family is scorned. Then after searching for Lydia, Mr. Bennet soon dies, so Longbourn is no longer their home. Five years past; Elizabeth lives with her remarried mother but visits Jane, who is married to a tradesman, on weekends. During the week she work as a seamstress.

Five years later, Darcy finds Elizabeth. Her position is even lower now.

Great story. Darcy proves himself worthy as nothing can make him scorn her lowered position.

Loved all these stories and highly recommend this anthology.

An Anthology That Induces Many Smiles, Sighs, and Swoons

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Source: Gift from Publisher

There are nine Regency short stories by nine talented Quills and Quartos authors in this anthology. Each story is specifically about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet coming together, and they range between thirty-four and fifty-eight pages in length.

Here is a breakdown:

SIXTEEN DAYS AT PEMBERLEY – Susan Adriani

- Setting: Pemberley – post Hunsford

- The Premise: The Gardiner’s visit to Derbyshire takes a different turn when the rest of the Bennet family goes on a seaside holiday and no scandal calls anyone home…

- My Thoughts: Such a gentle romance between Darcy and Elizabeth. I loved witnessing Elizabeth’s admiration and affections grow. I loved all the ways Darcy and Elizabeth displayed their fervent love for each and yet it remained unspoken…to the point where Elizabeth was growing impatient. 😉

THE PLEASURE OF UNDERSTANDING HER – Mary Smythe

- Setting: Netherfied – pre Netherfied Ball

- The Premise: Darcy suffers an intense headache and wakes up with the ability to hear the thoughts of everyone around him…

- My Thoughts: So diverting and so clever! Can you imagine possessing this ability? It was so humorous and informative for Mr. Darcy to hear everyone’s most private thoughts. I loved seeing what he did with his new understanding. Especially when it came to changing Elizabeth’s opinion of him… This was one of my faves!

THE HEART’S CONSENT – Paige Badgett

- Setting: London – post Pemberley

- The Premise: Elizabeth is on the brink of expecting a proposal from someone suitable and kind, but her heart still yearns for the man she once refused…

- My Thoughts: I loved the tension in this one! So full of meaningful looks, anguished feelings, and actions that came too late. I loved feeling all the turbulence Darcy and Elizabeth experienced as they kept missing their chances together. And I greatly appreciated Elizabeth’s (and the author’s) cleverness!

NO CHARM EQUAL – Jan Ashton

- Setting: Netherfied – pre Netherfielld Ball

- The Premise: Instead of assuming he stares only to find fault, Elizabeth is unsettled but challenged by Mr. Darcy’s stares and engages him more in conversation…

- My Thoughts: I loved the different conversations in this one. I loved seeing Darcy so completely bewitched by Elizabeth and how she begins to understand his character better. Both characters were charming! Their banter and challenges were fun to witness!

UNITED BY HAPPENSTANCE – Gailie Ruth Caress

- Setting: London – post Hunsford

- The Premise: Lady C proves her usefulness by bringing Elizabeth and Maria back to London, but makes a fateful mistake by opting to call first at Darcy House…

- My Thoughts: What a chance encounter to have so soon after rejecting Mr. Darcy’s proposal! I adored Mr. Darcy in this one. I loved how he was discomposed and how he could not fully mask his emotions. I appreciated seeing Elizabeth find a surreptitious way to voice her altered opinion of Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy’s steadfast protectiveness and sincere concern.

THE FIRST MOMENT OF THEIR ACQUAINTANCE – Amy D’Orazio

- Setting: London and Meryton – post Hunsford

- The Premise: Darcy is still despondent a few months after Elizabeth’s rejection and his cousins come up with an outlandish plan that enables Mr. Darcy to begin anew…

- My Thoughts: What a lark! Like Elizabeth, I am completely endeared and amused by Mr. Darcy’s actions in this one. I loved the uniqueness of Mr. Darcy engaging in such a comedic scheme. This one is full of laugh-out-loud moments – I loved Elizabeth’s playful attitude, Mr. Darcy’s suffering, and Mr. Bingley’s overall struggle with everything! This was one of my faves!

SPEAKING THE TRUTH – Nan Harrison

- Setting: Netherfied – post Netherfielld Ball

- The Premise: To Mrs. Bennet’s delight, the Bennets’s carriage is extra-delayed, and Elizabeth’s feelings of mortification have reached their breaking point, so she decides to walk home…

- My Thoughts: Mr. Darcy going after Elizabeth is *swoon!* I absolutely adored the high emotion and honest exchanges in this story. The evolution of feelings and internal thoughts for both characters were so vividly and tangibly portrayed. I could easily understand Elizabeth’s wretchedness, and I appreciated Mr. Darcy’s consternation when he understood the realities of Elizabeth’s and Mr. Bingley’s situations.

A DUET IN DISPUTE – Michelle Ray

- Setting: Netherfied – pre Netherfield Ball

- The Premise: Elizabeth is an extremely gifted musician with a talent for composition and some audacious (for a Regency era woman) ambitions. But what happens when she finds love…

- My Thoughts: In this case, music appears to be the food of love! I enjoyed seeing Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth so drawn to each other and very naturally in love. And I appreciated the uniqueness of Elizabeth’s ambitions being the challenge they need to overcome. There were just one or two moments where I didn’t love their actions, but “all’s well that ends well!”

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN – Kay Bea

- Setting: London – post Pemberley 5 years

- The Premise: Lydia was never recovered and the Bennets (and the Gardiners) suffered several consecutive devastating blows, and Elizabeth firmly believes the chasm between them is too wide…

- My Thoughts: Ooh! While their situation is indeed heartbreaking, I loved the melodrama and poignancy of this story. Each characters’ life took a very unexpected and divergent turn. Elizabeth is admirable with her fortitude, but Mr. Darcy’s steadfast love and unconquerable devotion is everything. I loved witnessing his ceaseless and single-minded efforts to win her love. He is indeed the best of men.

CONCLUSION: I don’t think I could love this exquisite collection of stories any more! The premises were thoughtful and creative, the writing solely featured essential details and developments without excess, and each story presented characters and situations brimming with earnestness and emotions. For readers who love spirited and sincere romances in condensed yet satisfying settings , An Inducement Into Matrimony is a MUST read!

AN INDUCEMENT INTO MATRIMONY is an anthology of short stories which are variations of Pride & Prejudice, written by some of today’s best JAFF authors.

Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani

In which Lydia does not go to Brighton. The Gardiners and Elizabeth stay at Pemberley, allowing Darcy to show how much he has improved himself and how much he adores his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth.

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe

In which Fitzwilliam Darcy has a headache with an odd side effect. He awakens with the ability to hear everyone’s thoughts. This ‘blessing’ leads him to learn that despite her flirting and sycophancy, Miss Bingley thinks him dull and stupid.

Whilst Miss Elizabeth’s thought’s show that she has not been flirting with him as he believed, but in fact dislikes him.
Can his power help him to change her mind?

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett

In which Elizabeth Bennet meets a frosty reception at Darcy House.

Lydia Bennet’s elopement, put an end to Elizabeth’s visit to Derbyshire. It also dowsed the rekindled attraction between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy.
A year later, with the scandal fading, Elizabeth calls upon Fitzwilliam’s sister Georgiana. However, Fitzwilliam gives her a cold and bitter welcome.
Elizabeth is under pressure to find a husband and is being offered a marriage of convenience to Mr Coble, a wealthy tradesman.

She had held some hopes that Fitzwilliam Darcy might still feel affection for her. After her visit to Darcy House, with all hope of a love match gone, she accepts Mr Coble’s offer of marriage.

She immediately regrets her decision, just as Darcy regrets his treatment of Elizabeth.

Can they find their way to each other?

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton

In which Darcy becomes a friend to Elizabeth and briefly, a magician’s assistant!

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress

In which Lady Catherine transports Elizabeth Bennet and Maria Lucas from Hunsford to London.
She insists on dropping in to Darcy House, on the way. They meet young Georgiana Darcy and join her in the music room.
When Fitzwilliam Darcy enters the room, the frisson between him and Elizabeth is palpable.
Unfortunately, Lady Catherine notices and verbally attacks Elizabeth (and poor Maria due to guilt by association).

Darcy is staunch in his defence of her and sees both ladies safely to the Gardiner’s home, following their abandonment by Lady Catherine.

Darcy and Elizabeth, thus have a second chance to get to know each other.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio

In which Mr Darcy grows a beard, wears poorly fitting breeches and pretends to be his own cousin, in an effort to be in Elizabeth Bennet’s presence and to win her heart.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison

In which the Bennet family go that ‘extra mile’ to humiliate themselves at the Netherfield ball.
Elizabeth is so mortified that she tries to run home on freezing night, in a ball gown and satin slippers.
Fitzwilliam Darcy is concerned and goes after her with a warm cloak. Their encounter corrects several misunderstandings and leads each to re-evaluate their opinions and feelings.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray

In which Elizabeth is a talented composer and pianist. Her desire to perform leads her to reject marriage to the man she loves, because he and all her family believe it would be a degradation for her to be a professional pianist.

Whilst in London, she meets and befriends a talented musician, who embraces poverty for the glory of music.
Unfortunately, his name is George Wickham and we all know what that means.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea

In which Lydia was never found. The ruin of the Bennet family is swiftly followed by the death of Mr Bennet and banishment from Longbourn. The Gardiners business is beset by disaster and they leave London to start again in Liverpool, taking Kitty with them. Five years later, Fanny Bennet has remarried, to a man who resents the existence of her daughters.

Elizabeth is the last sister unmarried, residing with her mother but not provided with any money. Thus she works as a seamstress for a fashionable modiste.

One day she meets Fitzwilliam Darcy in the street and dreams of an impossible fairy tale ending!

This anthology is a wonderful mix of angst, romance and heartfelt delight!.

Short stories of Lizzy and Darcy

Many very good stories of Lizzy and Darcy finding love. Most of the stories are excellent, a greater percentage than many books of short story romances. A surprisingly pleasurable book to have read.

A delightful collection! Every story is about the circumstances leading to the union of ODC. Though every one of these stories were lovely, especially Michelle Ray's "Duet in dispute" was so sweet, two stories need special mention. Paige Badgett's "The heart's consent" and Amy d'orazio's "The first moment of their acquaintance ". Moodwise, these two are in the opposite sides of the spectrum, one heart wrenchingly angsty and another laugh out loud hilarious but both are guaranteed to steal your heart.

This anthology was much enjoyable as it was a pleasure to renew with authors I have come to love with their different variations of Elizabeth and Darcy’s romance and to discover new voices with different insights about these favorite characters.
Those short revisits are all fun, intriguing and enticing.
5 stars

Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani
This one follows the natural path of what if Darcy had warned Mr Bennet about Wickham’s true character. Thus more time for him to enjoy Elizabeth as a guest in his home.
Lovely

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe
Why if Darcy could hear everyone’s thoughts. An interesting with a paranormal side revisit. As Darcy learn early how his behavior has affected Elizabeth’s view of him, leaving him with no other choice than having to correct it quickly.
Fun

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett
What if Darcy took wrongly to his heart Elizabeth’s rejection and burned his chance of a second proposal.
Elizabeth is here, resigned to her fate but at the same time combative and seeking for ways out of her present circumstances, a new path able to grant her her heart’s content.

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton
With no Wickham nor rushed departure from Netherfield, Darcy is at leisure to observe Elizabeth, and decides with his heart as much as his brain how fitting if she could be the lady of his life. Being the embodiment of kindness, fairness and wittiness.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress
What if the most outspoken haughty character give them the opportunity to get back together, or when a shrew rude Lady Catherine is tool to bring back our heroes after Darcy’s disastrous proposal.
A cute tale of adversity mending their path.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio
Once again Sayes, Darcy’s older cousin comes to the rescue with the most outrageous scheme,
His salvation or his doom, all will depends of Elizabeth’s change of heart or not when Bingley and Darcy battle to keep the farce up.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison
What if Darcy was induced to reveal earlier his feelings, altered his journey’s course at Netherfield.
A less haughty Darcy with an Elizabeth more open to their flaws.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray
What if it was composing and playing music that consumed Elizabeth’s thoughts, which path would she choose between love and passion for her art, even if it would be facing scandal.
A much different Elizabeth, driven but lacking sense and sensibility for those around her, with a Darcy still ready to rescue her even from her foolish actions.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea
What if Elizabeth left immediately after learning of her younger sister’s disgrace. This tale shows how things went down upon a ruined reputation even if it is by proxy.
From Elizabeth’s sturdy persona and Darcy’s enduring love, it is a lovely romantic tale.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 kisses

To read and reread

Quills & Quartos collection where we are presented with different stories, of different styles that occur at different times in the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Sixteen Days at Pemberley - The book begins very well with the couple's meeting in Pemberley in which time proves to be a possible opponent in an attempt to clarify the doubts and uncertainties of the feelings they have for each other.

The Pleasure of Undestanding Her - We then have the opportunity to accompany an incredulous Mr. Darcy who starts to hear the thoughts of others during the stay of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet in Netherfield and is amazed not only with the curious mind of Mr. Hurst but with the thoughts and feelings of Elizabeth towards him and towards the others and the decisions that he takes care of it. I laugh too much.

The Heart's Consent - Months after Hunsford, Mr. Darcy races against time and the possibility of Elizabeth's engagement to another man.

No Equal Charm - The presence of Mr. Collins in Meryton is recognized as a possible threat in the dispute for the hearts of the eldest of the sisters Bennet and Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth learn to appreciate their multiple qualities sooner.

United by Happenstance - Lady Catherine decides to bring Maria Lucas and Elizabeth Bennet Kent to London and ends up taking them straight to Darcy House, where her wishes are not taken as orders.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance - Trying to Help a heartbroken Darcy, her adorable cousins, Viscount Saye and Colonel Fitzwilliam, come up with an idea to redeem his image: a plan that is bound to go wrong and which incredibly Mr. Darcy accepts. As expected, the plan would not go as planned!

Speaking the Truth - After all the mortification experienced during the Netherfield Ball, Elizabeth confronts Mr. Darcy and this conversation will change the course of events for many people.

Duet in Dispute - Elizabeth's love of music is the biggest obstacle to her love for Fitzwilliam Darcy

What Might Have Been - Lydia's escape and subsequent disappearance irrevocably changes the fates of her sisters, until an unexpected encounter changes Elizabeth's life.

Adorable! Some stories I read more than once.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Only 2 ⭐️ because of the last two stories (A Duet in Dispute & What Might Have Been) were preposterous.
The former for its premisses. Nothing in that story had anything to do with P&P... oh sorry, no, the characters' names were "borrowed" from JA's masterpiece, my bad.
As for the latter, the whole thing was childish, teenagery (not a word).

For the other stories, they all deserve a 3 ⭐️ ratings.

A heartwarming, stellar collection of short stories.

Q&Q have published compilations in the past, but this is by far my favorite collection.

It is pure sweetness and mush of the heart, with some angsty moments, hysterical ones and above all, the everlasting love of ODC. I Loved it!!

Each story is uniquely in the voice of the author by whom it is written. I found most of the stories so compelling that I could read them again and again.

1 - Sixteen days at Pemberley – Susan Adriani
ODC get the chance to build a relationship at Pemberley, with Lydia safe with the family. Elizabeth’s feelings have a nice long opportunity to blossom (16 days to be exact.)

2 - The pleasure of understanding – Mary Smythe
What if, for a short while, Darcy could hear people’s thoughts? *This author definitely has a playful, raunchy side*

3 - The Heart’s Consent – Paige Badgett
It may be the shortest at 3 chapters, but it packs a wallop of angst. Elizabeth makes a decision that will change the course of her future and cease all hope of one with Darcy.

4 - No Charm equal - Jan Ashton
Darcy has his usual inner turmoil at Netherfield, but gets a wake-up call earlier than in canon. He also makes a big point of behaving better and far more charmingly towards Elizabeth and her feelings alter drastically up to the ball.

5 - United by happenstance – Gailie Ruth Caress
After the failed Hunsford proposal, Lady C is quite useful towards ODC (that should be some small comfort to her). The style of writing was quite poetic, with many long words- personally I found this one heavy reading and was my least favorite.

6 - The first moment of their Acquaintance - Amy D’Orazio
A particular favorite author of mine, the continuity in characters between all her books add a little something more to the stories. Not mention Saye’s fan club all of his own. Longest in this collection at 10 chapters.
Darcy, who abhors deception of any kind finds he will go so far as to pretend to be someone else to win Elizabeth’s heart. Elizabeth gets her chance to meet at the Meryton assembly.

7 - Speaking the Truth - Nan Harrison
The setup is Netherfield ball and all looks according to canon – until Elizabeth sees Darcy contriving with Miss Bingley and must get away. Darcy goes after her to make sure she is safe, but so much more is revealed than he bargained for.

8 - A duet in Dispute -Michelle Ray
Elizabeth’s life is music, every moment has a reflective note and tone, which almost compels her to compose. When she and Darcy meet, she must make a choice between her first love and her new love for Darcy.
As a music lover I found myself so touched by Elizabeth’s conflict with her decision.

9 - What might have been – Kay Bea
When Lydia runs off with Wickham everything falls apart for the Bennet’s. Years go by before Elizabeth see Darcy again. Make sure your tissues are on hand!

5+* Will definitely be purchasing the paperback!

Beautiful writing; expertly curated
Another delightful collection of short stories from Quills and Quartos. This collection has been gathered together with great care giving the reader a well-balanced literary buffet with both sweet and savoury and just the right amount of seasoning.

Short stories are deceptively difficult to get right and many authors fall into the trap of putting too much in and effectively burying the plot as a result. I was very glad to see that none of the authors in this collection made this error but instead produced tightly written and edited stories to charm their readers.

The book art throughout is an added joy enhancing the reading experience significantly.

Sixteen Days at Pemberley by Susan Adriani - A sweet, low angst romance as Elizabeth has enough time at Pemberley to fall in love with Darcy. The narrative and dialogue is at a consistently high standard throughout.

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe - A delightfully humorous story as Darcy finds himself able to hear the thoughts of those around him. This is quite an eye-opener for our staid Mr Darcy as he learns what Elizabeth and Caroline really think of him. Mr Hurst’s internal monologue is very funny. Again, excellent writing throughout.

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett - The first real introduction of angst in this collection as a brief display of temper and petulance by Darcy seems to have a life-changing impact for both him and Elizabeth. Both the angst and the way it is resolved are expertly handled.

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton - A sweetly romantic story as Darcy succumbs to the charming creature that is Elizabeth Bennet and in so doing reveal his own charming side.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress - For me this was the true gem of the collection using beautiful language and intensely romantic. The author has spun an excellent story from a throwaway pronouncement from Lady Catherine speaking of her capacity to transport Elizabeth back to London if she will but stay at Rosings for longer than planned. As a result Darcy is able to make amends to Elizabeth for his atrocious proposal far more quickly and effectively.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio - A lighthearted and witty story as Darcy’s cousins talk him into a wild plan to win Elizabeth and make amends for his disastrous first impression. Whatever was he thinking, listening to them? An absolute delight.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison - Rather more angst and tension again as we move back to the savoury end of the buffet. Darcy finds his poor behaviour overheard by Elizabeth for a second time. In seeking to out it right he learns rather more than he expected but also discovers how he can obtain all he could hope for. Well written with excellent narrative, especially as Elizabeth vents her frustration at Darcy.

Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray - Music is Elizabeth’s passion but her family do not support her in this. This story has an interesting twist on the Wickham angle. This was a good and enjoyable story but was my least favourite.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea - This was the saddest of the stories as the consequences of Lydia’s actions wreak havoc and great sadness on the Bennets. An excellent ending to an excellent collection.

Quills and Quartos publishing never disappoints! Here is a swoonworthy collection of P&P stories.

Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani
4.5 stars. Darcy had written Mr. Bennet about Wickham, so Lydia was not sent to Brighton. This allowed the Gardiners and Elizabeth more time at Pemberley for them to come to an agreement. Sweet.

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe
5 stars. Mr. Darcy suddenly is able to read minds and learns all manner of things, most notably what he needs to do to improve Elizabeth's opinion of him. It was funny that at the beginning of the story (first day for Elizabeth at Netherfield), he considered her unsuitable, but in attempting to improve her opinion of him, his opinion of her improved greatly. Some of the thoughts he overheard were hilarious.

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett
4.5 stars. Both Darcy and Elizabeth continue to be at cross-purposes when they finally realize that they still love each other. Elizabeth cleverly tells her father to deny the suit of the banker she accepted when she thought all hope was lost with Darcy. Then Darcy has to get access to Elizabeth to convince her to accept him. Nicely done.

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton
4.5 stars. Darcy realizes early that Elizabeth is perfect for him and works to put himself in her good graces. Quite romantic.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress
5 stars. When Lady Catherine attacks Elizabeth's honor during a call at Darcy house, Darcy defends her and they are able to have a few moments of discussion to forgive each other for the Hunsford debacle and clarify their feelings.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio
5 stars. Honestly, when I read the description, I groaned and did not expect to like this story. Silly me! I should have more faith in this author, who is one of my favorites. The sly way this was done is so cool, and we see a bit of Viscount Saye again! I think he is my favorite of all non-canon characters in JAFF stories. I enjoyed this story very much; Darcy humbling himself to present a new countenance that would be pleasing to Elizabeth.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison
5 stars. Very romantic. When Darcy and Elizabeth have a chance to speak truth to each other, a new and greater understanding happens. I love how Darcy gradually realizes how precious Elizabeth is to him.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray
4.5 stars. This was lovely. Elizabeth is compelled to compose music. Darcy falls in love with her, but expects her to leave the music as an incidental hobby once they marry. She finally realizes (due to an act of love by Darcy) that composing and sharing music is what she really desires, not to be a performer.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea
5 stars. Lovely and romantic story. Five years after Elizabeth turned Darcy away from the Inn in Lambton, she is working as a seamstress when she accidentally runs into Darcy. He is thrilled to have found her and woos her until he can convince her to marry him. Sweet!.

This anthology contains nine short stories that each showcase Darcy and Elizabeth’s path to happiness. As with all anthologies, I enjoyed some more than others, but they were all very well written and fun to read. Because they are short stories, they are mostly angst free and focus on the romance. These stories are great for a rainy day or when you just want something short and sweet to make you smile or when you don’t have the time or mental capacity for something deeper and angsty.

Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani- very sweet story where E is staying at Pemberley with the Gardiners and ODC share many tender moments as they come to understand their feelings.

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe- This one has an interesting premise of Darcy’s migraines giving him some sixth sense for a couple days where he is able to hear the thoughts of others. I felt like it was a little too easy in this one and Darcy never had to overcome anything, but not bad for a short story.

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett- In this story Elizabeth has another suitor and hopes D will give her a way out. She takes a risk that doesn’t go as she planned and misunderstandings arise. Sweet and romantic reunion. I enjoyed this one, but it left me with lots of unanswered questions, which is a downside of short stories.

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton- This one is enjoyable and fun, but it was hard to ignore that changes in feelings occurred with no basis or catalyst. No change needed to happen for E to change her tune. Interesting magic at the Netherfield Ball.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress- Lady C is definitely helpful, as she so likes to be, in this story. Elizabeth finds herself being escorted to London by Lady C and they make an unexpected stop at Darcy house. I enjoyed this one.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio- Good old Lord Saye comes up with a very “Saye” idea that Darcy go in disguise to try and change her poor opinion of him. All is resolved during the course of the Meryton Assembly.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison- Amazing what an honest, candid conversation can do. I love when situations are presented and ODC can have an open conversation. Great premise. I also loved Bingley in this story! Sweet resolutions.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray- This one was probably the most “outside the box” story from this collection. Elizabeth is an aspiring musician that doesn’t want to give up her dreams in favor of marriage. While it was well written, this one wasn’t a favorite of mine.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea- I really loved this one. One small change from the original stories have huge ramifications in the lives of all involved. It starts off with some sadness and melancholy, but shows a constant and loving Darcy that was swoon worthy!

This is a great collection with something for everyone to love. You get to read about ODC falling in love in many different ways!.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is an anthology of nine short stories, which are variations of Pride & Prejudice. All are set in the regency era and follow a different path to happily ever after for Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani

When Elizabeth Bennet’s journey to Derbyshire with the Gardiners results in an extended stay at Mr Darcy’s estate, new depths of understanding grow between them, but it takes longer than either had hoped.

The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe

The sudden and shocking ability to read minds gives Darcy some much needed insight into Elizabeth Bennet’s heart, and into his own faults and behaviour.

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett

Both Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy must overcome regrets and recrimination if he is to win her back from another seemingly ardent suitor.

No Charm Equal by Jan Ashton

The enchanting qualities of Elizabeth Bennet drive Darcy from Netherfield earlier than expected, but encounters in London with friends and relations quickly remind him why she pierced his reserve and captured his heart.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress

Lady Catherine brings Elizabeth Bennet unexpectedly to Mr Darcy’s doorstep but when her ladyship recognizes she has brought the enemy to the gate, she turns vitriolic. Darcy and Elizabeth unite against his aunt’s wrath but will the union lead to more than either anticipated?

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio

Darcy’s cousins believe that they can fabricate a second chance for him to make a first impression on his beloved Elizabeth. He returns to Meryton hoping the disguise he wears will make the man he is more plain.

Speaking the Truth by Nan Harrison

Elizabeth leaves the Netherfield ball desperately ashamed of her family’s behaviour and wishing to escape the censorious eye of Mr Darcy and Miss Bingley. When Darcy follows her however, truths are spoken freely, and a new chance at love emerges.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray

A shared love of music results in a more amiable relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth but complications arise. Will his love for her be enough to overcome the challenges that face them?

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea

It’s been five years since the Bennet family was sunk beneath Lydia’s disgrace. Elizabeth has learnt not to regret Mr Darcy, that is, until a chance meeting makes her think that what might have been still could be.

So with all that and more this collection of stories will pull you in and hold you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

This is a well edited quality collection of short stories that are all about getting Darcy and Elizabeth to their happily-ever-after. All the stories are historical romances and may contain a kiss or two, no steamy scenes.

In Adriani's Sixteen Days At Pemberley, the Bennet family travelled to Kent together so there is no elopement from Brighton and Elizabeth and the Gardiners are free to stay longer at Pemberley, by Mr. Darcy's invitation. Some of the sixteen days get skipped over in the report but we find out that Darcy and Elizabeth grow closer but it's difficult for them to speak of their feelings and it may be time to let their hearts speak for them.

In Mary Smythe's The Pleasure of Understanding Her Darcy gains the strange ability to read minds which is a huge headache as there is a constant din of voices in his head and he hears many unflattering opinions of himself, but it also aids him in winning Elizabeth's good opinion.

The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett takes place after the Bingleys have wed. Elizabeth still misses Darcy but his discouraging response to her overtures makes her think that he is a lost cause and she says yes to another proposal. I liked the way she stalled and eventually got rid of the extra suitor.

In Jan Ashton's No Charm Equal, Darcy leaves Netherfield before the ball and does some thinking. He is asked to bring some friends to Bingley's ball and he realizes how much snobbery Bingley faces because of his background and how unfair it is. Elizabeth finds out that she misses him while he's gone. This was quite sweet. I was expecting the friends to be of more consequence than they were.

United by Happenstance by Gailie Ruth Caress starts at Rosings. Lady Catherine gets her way and is able to conduct Maria and Elizabeth to London but she finds out that it's not always good to get what you wished for.

The First Moment of Their Acquaintance by Amy D’Orazio features cousin Saye. Although disguise of every sort is Darcy's abhorrence he decides to try one in order to get a second chance to start anew with Elizabeth. This is funny and sweet, and it may be my favorite story here.

Nan Harrison's Speaking the Truth is set at the Netherfield ball. Elizabeth is embarrassed and fed up and runs away from the ball. Darcy follows her to ensure her safety and mutual happiness is ensured at the same time.

A Duet in Dispute by Michelle Ray is written in Elizabeth's first person point of view which I often find a bit jarring because it rarely sounds like her, you know...? She is very musical and wants to make music her career but a performer as a wife would be too scandalous for Darcy. Wickham does not care for consent here.

What Might Have Been by Kay Bea is a story in which Darcy didn't find out about Lydia's disgrace in time to do anything to help. Years later, Elizabeth lives a very different life as a seamstress but Darcy still finds her to be a dream come true.

I enjoyed this collection and stayed up far too late to finish it.

What can be better than nine Pride and Prejudice short stories? Each is approximately 50 pages, so each can be a quick read. What is so awesome is that they are about our lovely couple of Darcy and Elizabeth! Each story takes a different aspect of the original storyline and takes you on a short ride to happily ever after.

All of the authors in this anthology have had longer stories published previously. If one of the nine authors is new to you, I would encourage you to read her other works.

Nine ways to get to the altar

This collection of Pride and Prejudice short stories contains nine stories written by nine authors. All of the stories are different in context and end in matrimony.

The journeys to that happy ending are so varied that none of them resemble any of the others. My thanks go out to these authors for their contributions to this collection.

Great short stories

Wonderful short stories, complete in their own right, and continuing from canon at some point. I enjoyed each author. Very good to read over an evening- nice and clean stories.
