Collects GHOST-SPIDER #1-10, GHOST-SPIDER VIDEO COMIC, GHOST-SPIDER #1-10 and ANNUAL #1, KING IN GWENOM VS. CARNAGE #1-3, WEB WARRIORS #1-11 and material from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2015) #1.
This omnibus ends with the series that probably should have started the collection. The Web Warriors series was a miniseries that sprang from the Spiderverse mega event. It gave them a chance to go into the backstories of some popular characters from that run. That's all well and good. It's really weird, though, to END the omnibus with Gwen teaming up with characters that she's mourning in the START of the collection.
There's also the 'Spider-Geddon: Ghost-Spider Video Comic' that is the probably a cleaner, tighter mini comic than the 'Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider' #1 issue that pretty much copies the comic and adds (in my opinion) unnecessary dialogue.
I also find it amusing that for a character that hated being called Spider-Gwen, mentioned the need for a name change, and backdoor renamed herself....
...the series omnibus still includes that name they were trying to get away from.
------ Bonus: Gwen's books both ended, leaving pretty large plot threads dangling Bonus Bonus: cellulose? really? that's what it eats?
Bonus x 3: The Web of Life is attacked by...Electros? Really? He's a credible threat? I mean it's eventually going to take on wasps, so you know they're running out of plot fuel but seriously.
So first you get McGuire’s whole run on Ghost-Spider, which STARTS in a tie-in before really taking off just in time to unceremoniously end, threads dangling in the wind, in ANOTHER tie-in which itself does not have an ending. Then you pivot to Costa’s Web Warriors, a fun book that takes place and was released BEFORE the Ghost-Spider of it all.
Nothing overtly offensive about any of the material here in its own right, but slapping it together and calling it an omnibus feels, at best, lazy.
Hoping Spider-Gwen gets another proper, long run sometime in the future.
It is not my usual preference to buy a book so heavy to hold, or one that contains issues I already own - but this was, oddly enough, the cheapest option to read more of Spider-Gwen's adventures. I really enjoyed them. Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider is my fave comic book character. The main problem with this collection is not the stories themselves, but how they're arranged (out of chronological order). And look... while I love McGuire's run, reading it again made me realise that all those plot threads never got resolved. I'm disappointed by that once again.
Had to take it down a star because of the way this omnibus collection ends with some of the crossover spiderverse events that take place...BEFORE the events of the rest of the comics you've just read. Bizarre choice. They were also just not very good. 😬
But the storyline through Gwen's standalone series that's collected here is great. I love her weird school-in-alternate-dimension struggles, and her weird spidey villains. The drama with her friends and her dad is pretty well done too. I hope we get more grounded series featuring Gwen in the future.
Would rate the first half of the book 4 stars. Not as good as the first book, but still fun. Then the second half is random stories to fill in gaps from other books and Web Warriors (which is why I dropped it to a 3). Doesn’t have the same feel to it and the focus isn’t on Gwen. Hope the next book finishes out the story from the first half since they don’t resolve anything (I believe this was due to Covid and other stores with her character involved taking priority)
Honestly this book was so mid. I prefer the newer run of Gwen. I got this for Christmas anyways, and I’m just finishing it rn, lowkey might sell it cuz it’s just not what I expected
