Collects Doctor Strange (2015) #381-390 and Doctor Strange: Damnation #1-4. Duplicity and DAMNATION! Evil is everywhere, and the world needs the Sorcerer Supreme more than ever. But the Sorcerer Supreme is now...Loki?! Say hello to the Master of the Mischief Arts! The Norse lord of lies has the cloak, the spells - he's even got Zelma Stanton as his assistant! But when Strange raises up Las Vegas up from its destruction during SECRET EMPIRE, he inadvertently hands the key to the city of sin over to the embodiment of evil, Mephisto! It will take an unlikely assemblage of heroes from all throughout the Marvel Universe to defeat Mephisto - but at what price?
This run really sheds light on how unlikable Doctor Strange can be. First third could easily be an awesome What If? Episode. I still need justice for Bats. Solid, wide cast of characters. Not super impressed nor dissatisfied.
So there’s apparently an earlier, similar-but-different edition with the same cover (maybe?) of this run that focuses on Damnation but doesn’t include the earlier Strange issues featuring Loki as the Sorcerer Supreme and then does feature all the Damnation crossover issues. It those crossover issues that other reviewers were lobbing a lot of criticisms at, so I’m going to chalk it up to good luck that I read this volume instead since…I honestly don’t feel compelled to read Ghost Rider or Iron Fist crossovers currently.
I just finished the 2023 Ironheart volume that I believe is part of some recent repackaging efforts to get recent but not entirely brand new comics back into TPB circulation. That one wasn’t terrible, but was so misleading reading any focus on Riri and then also sort of runs up into and through Civli War II very messily. This Doctor Strange volume, however, seems VERY thoughtfully put together. The first several issues focus on Loki but in service to fleshing out Strange in his weird earthly purgatory as a pseudo veterinarian, no longer serving as the Sorcerer Supreme. We get enough to understand his relationship with Zelma and Bats, just as we do in Damnation with Wong and Clea and even Mephisto. The writing is consistent with clear character voices all around (loved Dormammu here), but the art, especially by Walta and Herichon, is fantastic here. It’s gritty and has the right feel for a character who feels so beat down but wanting to still, at times, crack jokes and be self-deprecating. Honestly, this would have been ideal source material for a second Strange film from Marvel than the uneven Multiverse of Madness. And it would have tied into Loki, well before Deadpool & Wolverine ever will!
Cates wrote two main storylines during his short run, I preferred the first but the second was still enjoyable and had its moments.
The first plot sees Doctor Strange stripped of his title as Sorcerer Supreme, only for Loki to take on the role. Really enjoyed this storyline, as it was fun to see Strange at such a low point. Would have liked this story to have continued for a little while longer but it ended quite quickly.
The second story involves Hell coming to Las Vegas, and Strange is responsible! This story had a lot of strong points, featuring a range of mystic and magic-related characters from Moon Knight to Doctor Voodoo. Unfortunately each issue spent a few pages recapping the story so far instead of furthering the plot. This became repetitive while reading and honestly there were elements of the story that could have used development, in particular Strange's depressive state.
The final issue features Spider-man and was a real highlight.
It's such a slow roll of a story. Each issue started with a rehashing of the previous issues and a baby step forward in the story. They didn't even include one of the bigger payoffs for the story which was infuriating! It just has a cliff note to see what happened in a different issue. The first story was pretty fun overall. The second is where it dropped off. Dr. Strange also just ends up being a totally underwhelming character who needs others to constantly save him while he broods over not having friends but barely begins to explain any reasons for his isolation.
It was such a great read. I loved the characters used such as the Midnight Sons and the Avengers. Dr. Strange was a little bit annoying with his emo attitude thinking he’s alone. BATS! I loved Bats, he was such a highlight in this novel and I hope to see him in other stories. I was disappointed finding out the Loki x Wanda x Dr. Strange scenes were just an illusion, I would loveee to see that powerful trio.
