Lu promised herself she would never go back to the Shadow Realm, but the fates have other plans. Ashen has forfeited his rule to crown Lu the Queen of the Reapers, and now she has the power to remake the realm of the demons, to bring back merciful justice to the land where souls suffer in eternal servitude and violence lurks in the twilight fog. But not everyone is on board with the new change in leadership to a vampire queen, and following the torture and trauma of her last visit to the Shadow Realm, Lu isn’t thrilled about it either.
Trouble is, there are worse creatures than the dangerous demons whose flaming eyes follow her through their realm of darkness.
Lu’s enemies aren’t just lurking in the shadows. They’re beating down her door.
When Lu and Ashen are attacked in the Shadow Realm, the secret goals of the Nephilim begin to surface like creatures of the deep, dragging everyone’s ancient history with them as they rise. And if the Nephilim succeed, they will seize the ultimate power to rebuild the realms to their own design. Their reach and might is greater than anyone anticipated. And unless Lu can conquer not only her own fears but the distrust that immortals hold against one another, the Nephilim will win the new war.
Secrets have sharp edges in the Shadow Realm. Love can be a lethal poison. And Lu must never forget… No betrayal is worse than when it’s delivered by the hand of someone you love.
“You’ve given me all my best firsts, Ashen.” [...] There are so many moments in the few short months we’ve known each other where I shared with him something I’d never shared with anyone. And so many moments I would never want to have again, not because I want to forget, but because each is a precious star so bright that its hue could never be replicated. “The first time someone told me they loved me when I had nothing to give in return, and yet they still loved me anyway. The first time I tried everything I could to push someone away, and yet they still kept coming back for me. That was you. You’re all my best firsts, Ashen.”
What i said in my reviews of ASITR and AHOBP still applies here and some much more. 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐢 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨. 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐲𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫. But I'm still in a fog with my words since my hiatus ended, it's like my thoughts and words are no longer tethered together. And i know whatever I'll write down won't reflect what i truly feel. Not even remotely close. Ashen and Lu were truly fantastic here and gave me everything i ever wanted from them. I loved them as much as I loved my witch, demon and angel triad. This world and the sassiest Vampire known to men will be missed.
“What I said was true, Lu. I have chosen you from the first moment I met you. I will choose you every day to come. I know I do not deserve to have you, not after the things I’ve done over this long immortal life. But I promise to try to be worthy of your love. I promise to take your hand when you wander in the night. To whisper to you so that you know you are not alone. I promise to stand with you in every moment, no matter if they are ones of vengeance or justice or mercy. [...] I promise that I will love you until there is no sun or stars in the sky, until the end of time and beyond.”

While this is one of my favourite books, I am truly struggling to write a review for this book, mainly because I can't see through the tears in my eyes but partially because I know writing this review means this series is over and there will be no more Lu and Ashen for me. While I'll continue to read and reread this series until I can recite it word for word, I am so happy that I was able to read this book early and fall back in love with Lu and Ashen once more for the final time.
I feel like I knew internally I would be hit with all the emotions reading this book but I was unprepared for how many tears I could cry reading this. Lu and Ashen almost have their happy ending in the beginning of book three, but they can't seem to catch a break and in this last instalment of the series they have one more final battle before they can enjoy their forever happiness. I just know that their forever will be perfect so I can rest easy imagining all the things they're going to do when they can just chill and live their lives to the fullest. I'm going to be spending a lot of time imaging them doing crazy modern things because they can :)
The two of them have owned all of me this year, from some of their best moments to some of their more heartbreaking ones. In A Queen of Broken Realms, these are just snippets of some of my favourites:
"I can walk." "I know you can, But I'm not having your soles stained by the blood of your enemies"
Hello dream man, Ashen never fails to impress me with how much he's devoted, obsessed, and in love he is with Lu. Ashen carry me in your arms next, pretty please :)
"Steady, vampire. Hold it tightly."
Let's his girl do the boss bitching, and has her back the whole time. He never takes her spotlight, leaving Lu to hold her own while always making sure she's protected. Their love is inspiring, beautiful, and oh so deliciously steamy.
I may not be ready for their story to end, Brynne did them justice that I will forever love her for. The two of them deserved the world, which Brynne created for them. This will be a books series I cherish forever.
(p.s. Now that Lu and Ashen's story has come to a close, I'll be formally putting in another request for the Ediye, Cole and Eryx content that Brynne knows we all want ;)
3.5 winged stars I'm a bit disappointed by the last book in this series. Did I forget everything that happened in the previous books since I read them? Of course I did. And it made reading this book confusing as hell at times. I really wished authors would include recaps of the important events for those of us with a squirrel brain. Overall, this book didn't pull me in like the previous two. It just couldn't hold my interest and the pacing felt off. I felt like it took me forever to read it and by the end I skimmed some parts. I'm sad about it because there was some sweet moments between Lu and Ashen, who is so in love, caring and utterly devoted to his wife.
I dragged my feet finishing this book because I didn’t want it to end. I love these characters, this world, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. This series is honestly a favorite of mine. I can’t tell you how often I laugh, cry, and panic. 🫣😂 Still gathering my thoughts because it’s late but I was so close to the end and had to find out what happened. I will say, if you’ve enjoyed Lu and Ashen’s story so far, you’ll love this. Or maybe you’ll see my review and decide you want to meet them and find out 😏 I can’t recommend it enough. Be prepared for hilarious pop culture jokes, characters that have so much heart it feels like you know them, and spice. SO MUCH SPICE. 🌶
Ok for a series that started off as strong as this one, I have to say I am SO disappointed in this third book. I couldn’t even get through it!
The MMC is way to smitten and over the top with the FMC, its actually nauseating. Way more steam than plot in this one and the plot wasn’t even that great! Im not sure that this could have ended on the second book, but I definitely wish I would have stopped reading after the second.
I received an advanced copy from the luscious Brynne Weaver.
I am posting my review, I will include some quotes from the book in here, but nothing is a huge spoiler or anything, it's a big story so there is so much to get through!
This starts off right after the conclusion of AHOBP. And Lu, that wonderful, sassy, vampire makes me laugh INSTANTLY:
"I'm the first woman in history to be made a queen while wearing nothing but a thin silk robe with jizz stuck to her legs." I LOVE IT🤟👸 Lu was a QUEEN before she was a queen and Ashen that sexy Reaper bastard is EVERYTHING:
"You are the balance between shadow and light. You change the people you’re with. You bind them together. And when they can’t get behind you, you do what needs to be done. You are not afraid to make a friend. And you are not afraid to kill an enemy.”
Lu & Ashen are one of my top fictional couples, I will never tire of their banter:
"It has. And it’s not over yet,” Ashen says with a wicked edge to his voice. It cuts through the swell of the pulse humming in my ears. “It’s far from over, in fact.” “You sound like a man with a plan" "Maybe" "A demon with semen.” “Dear Christ.” “A Reaper carpet eater?..”
"You should be glad I’m tied up, Reaper,” I manage, my voice breathless and strained. “Really? Why is that? Aside from the obvious benefits, of course.” “Because I’d be biting my finger and shoving it up your ass faster than you could say butthole.”
Their chemistry is off the charts!! All I have to say is THE THRONE SCENE 🥵
"That’s a lovely story. And I am not sitting on that throne, Reaper. Get fucked.” Lu is still always hilarious 😂
THEIR BANTER THOUGH:
I shift my attention toward the soldiers that wait in the shadows for their next instructions. I nod at the one who I figure ranks highest among them. “Please take the skin throne and leave me and my…demon…alone. ” I can almost hear Ashen’s eyes rolling. “Husband,” he says, letting my hand go to press on the mark on my chest. I grin as I swat his hand away. “Person of romantic interest.” “Hus. Band.” “Booty call. Is that still a thing?” “Vampire––” “I’ve got it! I’ve got it. Bae.” “Fucking hell.” “Yes, please leave me and my bae. We have work to do.”
Ashen is all kinds of sexy and delicious in this book:
"I will kneel before you, my Queen. And I will worship you.”
And they way this man protects her makes me feral:
He’s bringing the mace toward me when it suddenly slips from his hand. He lurches to a halt. A collar of glowing glyphs clamps around the Nephilim’s throat. No, not a collar. Tattoos. My husband’s hand. The enemy chokes a desperate breath. His feet lift from the ground. His mask is torn from his head and falls through the flame to the cobblestone road. Ashen’s face comes into view next to the man’s wide, bloodshot eyes, the tiny blood vessels within their white surface bursting from the pressure of the Reaper’s unrelenting grip. “Mine,” Ashen growls into his ear.
I'm pretty sure I got pregnant 🤰
And his way of comforting Lu:
The right decisions often come with the worst pain.” Ashen holds tighter.
I love Ashen & Lu, reading them has been an absolute pleasure 🙏.
This is quite plot heavy, there is a lot going on, I feel it could have easily been 2 books. However the writing is superb 👌, and I will forever be LUSHEN Stan.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this advanced reader copy. This honest review was based off my experience reading this eARC, which in no way biased me. All opinions are my own.
If you know me you know I am a HUGE Brynne Weaver fan, I found A Shadow in the Reaping just a month after Brynne self published it last year. I was IMMEDIATELY hooked, I’ve still never read an Urban Fantasy that made me laugh so much. Even with that ending (WHICH RUDE, but damn it was good), I patiently waited for A Heart of Bitter Poison that released this past January, (which I also had the chance to ARC read) and bestie raised the bar. Now we are here, at the end of the series and I am both happy and sad, how Brynne continues to raise the bar with this series I will never know, but I loved the ride.
My ass decided it was a good idea to reread A Shadow in the Reaping, and A Heart of Bitter Poison before I got this ARC, don’t get me wrong, it was a good idea. I am just extra emotional seeing it all back to back to back. Seeing the evolution of Brynne’s writing, and the character arcs is just *chef’s kiss*.
I’m happy we get another book of Lushen and the gang, but I’m sad that this is the end of the series. This book picks up IMMEDIATELY after Poison ends, AS IT SHOULD WITH THAT ENDING (not as shocking as book 1 but still). This book continues with the whole series being literally laugh out loud funny. Lu and Ashen’s banter is still going, if not even MORE, and I love that for them.
The cast of characters is impeccable, they’re all amazing and I love all of them. So they all get their own books right Brynne? Just kidding…. Unless… 👀
Brynne has always had a knack for having a few of what I like to call “oh shit *jaw drop*” moments in her books and this is no exception. I love when books surprise me. Also RUDE you made me cry a few times.
My only thing (I will not call it a complaint) is this book could have easily been broken into 2. This was more plot heavy than the previous 2 character driven books, this is not a bad thing, but there were 2 main things going on that could have each taken their own book. What can I say I’m selfish, and would have loved another book, but even with the plot heaviness, everything was tied up nicely. And there was still more character/relationship development that happened along with the plot.
Anyway, had a fucking blast reading this. Hence I literally started and finished on the same day. Brynne, I will literally read anything and everything you write.
A perfect end to a perfect paranormal romance trilogy. Every twist and reveal was amazing. I love Lu and Ashen’s relationship throughout this series. I loved that you don’t know who the true villain is until the end and you are left feeling like maybe they weren’t really a villain at end. I laughed, I cried, and I cursed. I loved the side characters and how they have basically their own story that is told along the way. The romance and spice was absolutely delightful.
My only hope is that Roman and Wyn get their own book/series and we get some crossovers of our favorites along their journey.
Big thanks to the author for sending me and eARC of the third book in the Shadow Realm series. I have been so invested in Lu and Ashen’s relationship from the very beginning and I was honored to get a first look at the conclusion(for now?🙏🏽) of their epic story.
Similarly to the first two books, I felt all the emotions with this book. We get plenty of plot and spice, moments that make you laugh, some that make you cry, or both at the same time if you’re like me. Not only was this a great conclusion for Lu and Ashen, but also for my favorite witch Ediye as well.
I’m both sad and excited to be able to officially recommend one of my favorite dark paranormal romances as a completed series.
What can I say about this series other than I LOVE IT!! The snarky banter is back between our bad af vampire Lu and her sexy af demon Ashen and it is absolutely essential to this story! Lu is now Queen of the Shadow Realm and has a lot of new ideas the Reapers don’t really care for. Ashen finds himself kicking a** and taking names to bring them to heel, and I gotta say no one has offered to rip out a spine or rupture eyeballs for me and its a downright shame! Lu and the crew also have to defend the Shadow Realm from nephilim and traitors in their midst. The banter is witty and the smut is HAWT! So excited for more !!!
I enjoyed this series so much. Vampire Lu will continue to be my favorite vampire for a long time. The found family aspects, the take over of the Shadow Realm, and the magic elements were all amazing. The twist I didn't see coming broke my heart a little, but what a way to end the series! My only complaint and it's hard for me to complain about is the amount of sex. It was too much. It took away from the story, and this was a good story.
After reading Butcher & Blackbird- I had to dive into anything else Brynne Weaver had out. In this series, I got to watch her grow as a writer. If B&B is Weaver's ACOTAR, then this was her Throne of Glass series. (If you get it, you get it.) It was fun, really interesting, peeled like an onion, made me emote- but also had gaps and lacked a certain maturity.
If you like.... *anti-hero love stories *jokes with a side of murder *broody men with hearts of gold *snarky indomitable women *imaginative takes on angels, demons, vamps, witches, and werewolves (also, werehorses?) *enemies to lovers
.... then definitely grab the first book of this trilogy. It's cute.
Loved the first two in this series. Felt a bit let done by the conclusion. Was a lot of waiting around for things to happen and then all the action got crammed into the last few chapters.
4.5 stars. I loved this book. I will most likely be rereading this series. I will admit there are some gaps in the storyline and plot points that were never explained or resolved.
Beyond grateful to be an ARC reader for this one. Opinions are my own and not influenced or biased etc etc.
I get scared when the final part of a series comes out. Too often I’ve been let down by pacing, or character development, or women giving up their strength, or an HEA where literally nothing goes wrong at all and lacks authenticity. Didn’t need to be for this one. Lu and Ashen have been granted the honour of a good. ending. The pacing is balanced, slower where necessary and faster through corners I didn’t see coming. Dialogue remains strong, funny and occasionally entirely heartbreaking for all the best reasons. Lu and Ashen get their sweet honeymoon period, their angsty big arguments, separations and reunions, and they simply make sense. I’m in that blissed out, post-book coma wherein I’m overjoyed to leave those characters where they are and forever imagine them there (but I really don’t want to so Brynne get back to writing asap pls because I can’t leave them alone too long).
I CANT Ashen is my new #1 book bf (*cough* husband). And Lu is my new #1 book gf, like no jk I’m OBSESSED with them. I DIED this book had the wit, the banter, the spice, the touch-her-and-you-die, the boss ass bitch who don’t need no man, the swoon (THE WHOLE TURKISH SPA SAGA 😍😍🫠🫠), the intrigue, the stress-verging-on-arrhythmia, and the HEA that leaves your crying. So.. like perfect, right?
I now will crawl into a hole, unable to recover. Nothing is funny after a brynne weaver book. Her wit, banter and dark humour is UNPARALLELED. And I need to now find people who will discuss her books with me without judging that “serial killers are bad” “that’s not funny, feeding people to snakes is gross” 🙄
This series totally and completely has my heart. Not only is it steamy (like, wow) but it’s so creative, funny, and heartfelt. The relationships and dynamics are engrossing and keep you on your toes. Lu and Ashen are exactly what should happen when enemies turn to lovers (still so much sass). And Ediye?! What a badass. She’s my favorite, and I absolutely adore the dynamic between her, Cole, and Eryx. All this to say, if you haven’t read this series yet, add it to your list. It’s amazing.
This series is FANTASTIC! I had some trouble getting through this last book, the story got too convoluted for me and I skimmed big sections because they were kinda boring and I didn’t understand what was happening. But…overall I got the point and I love Lu and Ashen to pieces. 💕
I could not finish this book. I really loved the first one, the second one was great but this one…..I got tired of reading about their sex life. Maybe I was just having a bad couple of days but I just got fed up with every other page being about sex.
I got bored honestly. I really wanted to love the conclusion of the trilogy but the plot seemed to get lost in all the 'romance' if you get my drift. I don't mind romance but not for the sake of the storyline. For me it was't necessary to include 3 books, 2 would have been fine.
This was such a delightful ending to this series! So emotional, action packed, twisty and I’m undeniably sad that it’s come to and end.
The first line in this book took me out and sent me flying off the stratosphere. It’s going down as one of my favorite opening lines ever! Lu is funnier, sassier & more badass than ever.
The person of romantic interest, sorry, I mean Ashen. He’s everything. Protective, possessive, caring. He was there for Lu every step of the way. The way he chose her, but also the way he needs her:
Now, for Lu & Ash as a couple: there are not enough words to explain how much I love their banter. These two had me laughing out loud, snorting, spitting out my coffee so many times I lost count. And then, obviously, we also have the moments that made me go absolutely feral: the ones where he shows his protectiveness towards Lu and the spice. I won’t elaborate here, you’ll have to read it. If I could be in a throuple with a book couple… Lu & Ashen would be my chosen ones! haha
The side characters are all great - for good or bad. And they could be main characters in their own books, because some of them have so much depth and such a good story to tell! I can’t wait for the day we get books for some of them. Yes, I’m manifesting it! 🙌🏻👀
I’d also like to point out that, having read these books with a short amount of time in between 1-2 and this ARC, the evolution of Brynne’s writing is undeniable. She said she would spice everything up and she delivered!
Fantasy Romance will never be my first pick but I just love Brynne's writing so much that this series will hold a special place for me for a long time. And the evolution of complexity and atmosphere from book 1 to book 3 had me swooning.
After the cliffhanger of book 2, I couldn't wait to see what happens with Lu and Ashen. Queen of the Broken Realms does not disappoint in the plot whatsoever. At times the politicking got so complex that I felt like Charlie Kelly tying pieces of the plot together on my wall with red string. Lu struggles in her new position and the threat presented by the Nephilim and you can feel the heaviness of her growth through the writing. But as ever, Brynne breaks up the intricate plot with humor and banter that had me cackling, especially Lu's lines to tease Ashen. Their relationship and commitment to each other brought me to tears a few times!
The spice does not disappoint, whewwwwwwww. Brynne has a really unique knack for writing really filthy scenes that read ethereal on the page. It's like watching an intense sex scene montage in a movie. There are limbs everywhere, slo-mo, gasps and passion. Absolutely loved it.
The found family aspect of the story is also really heartwarming as these lost immortal souls who've lost most of their families find peace and acceptance among this group of misfits. I especially loved Ediye's strength.
I just adore the writing style in this whole series but Queen was absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to have my own paperback copy.
If you know me at all you know I'm terrible with words and with that writing reviews, but I will try my best to put into words how much I loved the conclusion to this story.
Brynne Brynne Brynne... I always knew you could write, but you've never written like this my friend😭
I have read over 300 romance books in the past year and a bit but I don't think anyone holds a candle to the way the love and romance was written between Ashen and Lu honestly. I'm about to be in my feelings for the rest of the year knowing its finally the end of their story.🥺
Ya'll want proper romance you need to read this series fr fr.
Nowwww I knew Lu was funny because I laughed my ass through the first 2 books but Lu still managed to surprise me in this one I tell ya. You never know the shit that's about to come out of her mouth 😭🤣. I'd die for a best friend like her. Actually slash that I'd die to be apart of the friendship duo that is Lu and Ediye because that's the kind of friendship I need in my life 🤣.
One of my favorite things about this book is how much I loved basically every side character there was. From Ediye to Eryx and Cole. The animal companions Zida and Urtur🥰 and many more.
Book 3 ended exactly as I needed it to and for that I am happy 😊.
If you're looking for a hilarious paranormal romance series with badass MCs, amazing side characters and awesome animal companions this is the book for you!!!
This book, Brynnes writing is just absolute perfection. I had the opportunity to read the arc and I’m honoured.
I devoured the first 2 books recently and fell in love with the story, with the characters and their world.
I have never read a book where I’ve laughed so much, Lu Is hilarious everything that comes out of her mouth, even in serious situations makes me laugh.
Lu and Ashen are just perfect, two souls that needed to be together and their love is beautiful. Ashen definitely stepped up this book, his wings, his dirty talk I just need to know where I can find one for myself.
“You may be a queen, but you have the attitude of a demon and the mouth of a goddess,”
The side characters to me don’t really seem like much of side characters because they’re so important to the story and they’re all brought to life so well (I need Ediye and her men as a book please).
This book is filled with jaw dropping twists and turns and I found myself laughing at one part, gasping and then crying at the next.
The scene in Turkey will forever be engraved in my heart, I was a sobbing mess.
“You are not just my most precious star. You are every constellation that lights up the night, and I cannot bear the darkness without you.”
Overall, the series was okay. I loved the love between Lu and Ashen, and also Lu’s bond with Ediye—it was such a highlight. I really enjoyed Ashen’s POV entries and wish there had been more of them throughout the series. Without them, the books felt too one-sided, especially when we didn’t understand his true motivations in first books.
I didn’t understand the ending. The war just… ended when the stones were found and the gate collapsed? What was the point of the hybrids if the nephilim were the actual threat? And what happened to the latter? Did nephilim just vanish? It was never explained.
There were too many characters left with unanswered arcs. Roman, for example—what was his story and what was the secret he carried? What was the point of Cassian’s death? Lu became alpha of the werewolf pack, but then didn’t interact with them at all. The hybrids appeared only once, and just for entertainment in the gauntlet. And what was Aglaope even trying to achieve?
It felt like the world had a lot of potential, but the resolution was rushed and too many threads were left dangling.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Sassy, well fleshed out female MC with tons of character and depth - check Tattooed, Would burn down the world for the ones he loves male MC - check Spice - triple check!!! Engaging story that will literally rip your heart in two (and possibly make you cry in public) but will also make you laugh and go on an emotional rollercoaster - check.
Brynne did such an amazing job of bringing Lu and Ashen's story to a very satisfying conclusion.
I love the life she breathes into every single character. (I will be impatiently waiting for novels/novellas for about practically every other character in the book)
If you have been thinking about diving into these books, don't hesitate. Get all 3 books now and thank me later.
This was such a great ending to an amazing series. I cannot tell you how much I loved it. I absolutely fell in love with Lu and Ashen and their love. You could feel the connection between them, how much they loved each other, the fear of losing each other. I'm not ready to say goodbye to this badass, power couple 😭 ❤️ Thank you Brynne for this ARC and for writing this hilarious, smart, touching and engaging story, it'll stay with me for a long ass time.
