This is one of those books I am on the fence about. What sucks is that I have really enjoyed the other books that Lisa Marie Davis has written. She has a certain sweetness to her writing that I like, and her heroes usually have some tragic thing in their past they must overcome before they find their happy ending. Since I like some emotional angst in the stories I read, her writing is normally up my alley.
For some reason, I didn't like this book as well. It was too rushed in my opinion. It's unfortunate that authors are made to follow the word count rule, because sometimes...like with this book, I think it hurt the storyline itself. If she had been able to write another 50 (or even 25) pages or so, I think this book really would have been an excellent read.
The story starts when Jaylin and Max are in high school. Jaylin is an out of the closet, talented musician who does not have many friends because of his homosexuality. Because of his intelligence, he is often seeked out by his peers to tutor them with the subjects they are struggling to pass with. Max on the other hand, is a very popular athlete and runs with the "in" crowd. There is even talk about Max being able to even eventually become a professional athlete.
When Max asks Jaylin for help with his schoolwork, Jaylin is shocked, but agrees to do so. Jaylin wasn't even aware that Max knew who he was, much less seek out his help. When they meet after school, Max becomes very friendly and flirtatous with Jaylin. Soon, Max confesses that he is gay and he has had a crush on Jaylin for some time. With Max's persistance, Jaylin and Max soon become friends then lovers.
When some of Max's friends start suspecting that he and Jaylin are having a relationship they start harassing them. It gets worse as time goes by, almost to the point of Max and Jaylin reporting the harrassment to school officials. The problem is, Max is afraid what his very homophobic father will say, so he has tried to keep everything under wraps as much as possible. About the time that Max and Jaylin decide to come out with their relationship, they are attacked. Jaylin is tied down and forced to watch them beat, rape and do other horrible things to Max.
When they are finally rescued, and everything comes out, Max's horrible father convinces his son that Jaylin would be better off without him and sends him away.
Then at least 10 years later, when Jaylin hears that they are thinking about letting the perps out for good behavior he immediately returns to his home town to fight for them to stay in jail. He and Max reunite and they must work out their past before they have a future together.
Here was my problem with the story. It jumped around too much for me. There were times I felt like their story was skimmed over. Instead of giving any explaination, or detail with things it read more like the author was just running through it as fast as she could to get to main point of Max being violated. There is so much about the connection at the beginning of their relationship that I felt cheated out of. I really hate that, because I thought this story had so much potiental. I still liked Jaylin and of course Max, but never really felt a connection with them.
I hate word count!
