The Mistress of the Dark is lost in space and time, jumping from one horror movie universe to another in David Avalone's "Elvira in Horrorland". In each universe, she must find the remote control that will send her to the next universe and, eventually, back home.
Horror movie fanatics (and movie buffs in general) will love the film-nerd references and the breaking of the fourth wall in homages to Hitchcock's "Psycho", Kubrick's "The Shining", Wes Craven's "A Nightmare on Elm Street", Ridley Scott's "Alien", and David Cronenberg's "The Fly", plus a plethora of other references.
Silvia Califano provides the gorgeous artwork, and Elvira provides the groaners and knee-slappers, as well as her trademark black bouffant and bouncy bits.

This was good fun. Not as charming as Elvira Meets Vincent Price but that’s more to do with the massive bite of multidimensional travel this one bites off and tries to chew.
It mostly goes down smoothly with the help of Elvira’s endless wit but all the films are off licensed so everything is named a little differently. It’s pretty clever how it’s done and it’s obvious what everything is supposed to be but in the middle of dusting off my David Cronenberg knowledge I then have to wrap my head around the logic of interdimensional travel and Disney Plus shows as well as whatever Elvira comics have come before that I haven’t read.
It was a lot but worth it I guess just to see Elvira quipping inside classic horror films or as close as copyright would allow.

David Avallone i Silvia Califano rzucają Elvirę w wir „pocket dimensions”, kieszonkowych wymiarów, w których klasyki horroru żyją własnym, choć zapętlonym życiem. Fabuła jest prosta: nasza bohaterka, uzbrojona w magicznego pilota od Felliniego i cięty język, skacze między planami Psychozy, Obcego czy Koszmaru z ulicy Wiązów, próbując wrócić do domu i przy okazji... zepsuć zakończenia, które wszyscy znamy. Znalezienie odpowiedniej stacji „powrotu do domu“ nie jest łatwe, a bohaterowie lawirują aby nie zostać złapani na bezczeszczeniu praw autorskich.
Gdzie diabeł nie może, tam Elvirę pośle
Największym atutem publikacji jest bez wątpienia scenariusz Avallone’a. Autor doskonale czuje głos Elviry - jej żarty są ostre, pełne dwuznaczności, ale (co ważne) nie przekraczają granicy niesmacznego uprzedmiotowienia, o co w komiksach o tej bohaterce nietrudno. Meta-żarty i walka z „czwartą ścianą” (z gościnnym udziałem parodii TVA z Marvela) to czysta, campowa frajda.
Czy to horror, czy tylko wydmuszka?
Mimo entuzjazmu, muszę wytknąć publikacji pewną nierówność. Album składa się z pięciu zeszytów i, jak to w antologiach bywa, nie każdy trzyma poziom. O ile hołd dla Hitchcocka i Kubricka lśni inteligencją, o tyle finałowe starcia bywają chaotyczne i mało oryginalne.
Warstwa wizualna Silvii Califano to solidne rzemiosło, choć momentami asekuracyjne. Elvira wygląda olśniewająco i ekspresyjnie, ale tła bywają sterylne. Największym zgrzytem jednak bywa podobieństwo aktorów. Califano czasem trafia w punkt, a czasem serwuje nam generyczne twarze, które tylko dzięki kontekstowi rozpoznajemy jako ikony kina.
Werdykt
„Elvira In Horrorland” to list miłosny do gatunku, napisany szminką na lustrze w motelu z Psychozy. Jeśli nie znacie fundamentów horroru, połowa żartów przeleci Wam nad głową. Even though I didn’t realize this was a continuation of a previous volume and missed out on the introduction and initial development of the dimension hopping plot device, it was still an overall fun time.
Your enjoyment on this, however, truly hinges on your knowledge of the movies being referenced in the five issues present in this collection. Some are certainly stronger than others. My favorite by far, and the only 5 star issue, was the Nightmare on Elm Street issue. Not only because it’s my favorite of the 80s slasher series but because it introduces a hilariously place Marvel TVA side plot that’s truly ridiculous but so fun.
I wish I would have read the first volume of this (Elvira Meets Vincent Price) but I still had a good time in this silly meta world.

It's been too long since I read a new Elvira book, and this one didn't disappoint. Trapped in the world of movies, Elvira does her best to get home, while ruining as many classics as she can in the process. Did you like Psycho? Alien? Nightmare on Elm Street? What about The Shining? Shame, because Elvira's about to put her stiletto heels all over them, kicking the fourth wall to pieces to the point that Mobius M. Mobiu- I mean, Owen Wilson turns up to stop her.
Laugh out loud funny, irreverent without being disrespectful, and full of plenty of innuendos that'd have the real Elvira cackling like a witch. Great stuff.

I guess this is part of a series, but it mostly stands on its own as well. Elvira ends up in classic horror movies, and does her best to save the protagonists, to the detriment of the stories, and the confusion of everyone around her. This is very much a fourth-wall breaking story, which can get grating quickly, but for the most part succeeds here. Elvira has a guiding mission, but her interactions with both heroes and villains make for some very silly antics. And despite her suggestive attire, this is a surprisingly wholesome story. I was very pleasantly surprised, and laughed out loud multiple times.

Anyway, I love the first Elvira movie and the overall camp of the character, but a lot of comics seem to miss the mark, going more oversexed in the jokes. This one is a delightful romp, Elvira dashing through horror classics like Alien and Psycho while making self-aware jokes and Mad Magazine name swaps to avoid copyright. The jokes really worked most of the time, and I had a blast. I haven't read the preceding series with Vincent Price and didn't feel lost at all.

This fun horror romp sees Elvira traipsing through various popular horror films looking for a magic remote control. It’s an avalanche of movie in-jokes, references and Elvira’s brand of quick witted double entendres. Not only does it come across like an epic MAD Magazine parody, it references MAD’s parody of The Shining. This was a lot of fun!

A clever romp through different horror films. I enjoyed the first two issues the most. The mash-up of Kubrick films was fun. The last issue was the least enjoyable since there was a bit too much going on.

This was fun and a natural fit for Elvira. For whatever reason (I mean who really cares) Elvira is being transported into iconic horror films and keeps unintentionally changing them. Filled with innuendo and fun.

Well, that was an absolute blast! A loving trip through some classic movies with Elvira’s trademark humour and more pop culture references than you can shake a stick at. The artwork was all excellent too and, unlike with some comics, really managed to capture the actors it was depicting.

A solid read. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for more from such a fun concept. It started strong but after like two issues the charm began wearing off a bit.
