Embrace the Light

Rate this book
A Tragic Story Comes to Light.

At last, Caelan and his companions are heading to see a long-time ally of Erya.

But New Rosanthe soldiers have already moved into the city, and nothing is quite as it seems.

Even as old betrayals reveal new enemies, Caelan’s main goal remains the God of Wisdom and the truth.

The only problem is that time is running out and the Dead God is waiting to claim him.

Embrace the Light is the fifth book in the six-book Godstone Saga fantasy series and is not a standalone. The story contains danger, secrets, bossy gods, stolen kisses, a new king finding his way, a possessive boyfriend, magic, and lots of delicious angst.

Well that was an 'I didn't see it coming' ending

No spoilers in this review but I will say the ending of Embrace the Light is one I hadn't really thought was coming.

I've had speculation that skirted close to it, with various other options for Cael and his friends in the end run and I have to say, I'm intrigued with the few possibilities that are now left.

And yes, it's cryptic, but this is book five of the series and there's only one more to go so it's almost impossible to try and give any hints without wrecking the experience of reading the Godstone Saga.

All I will say is that I've never trusted a deity - apart from Fizban 💗🤣 - in any fantasy series I've ever read and this book's a great example of why!

I absolutely loved every single bit of the joy to Ilon and the new secrets which were revealed.

It only remains to be seen how the mad Goddess of the Hunt will be dealt with ad I'm sure we've still got some twists and turns to come.

Well, that was quite the ending! I'm just glad that all of the books are out so I don't have to wait to get my hands on the conclusion!
Nyx... I just don't like him, though, judging by the end, this was always his plan. He was perhaps trying to tell Caelen something.

Pretty solid part and a quick read. Sometimes everything is a bit too perfect and cheesy for me (yes, I say that, although the world the boys live in really isn't a bed of roses). Relationships are sometimes set up too quickly for me (I don't mean the main relationships, but all the others). Otherwise, there are again some exciting reveals and a lot of build up to the last part. The ending definitely makes me want to read the final book.

Who can you trust apart from the family of your heart? Caelan, Drayce, Rayne and Eno are certainly about to find out in Embrace The Light, the fifth and penultimate book in the Godstone Saga series. This is absolutely not a standalone - the series needs to be read in order; but if you haven't already been hooked by book one, don't worry…you will be.

What can I say? No spoilers, but there's everything you've come to expect from this series - action and adventure, dilemmas and consequences, trust and betrayal with new friends and new foes, twists and turns that take the MCs to some surprising places, and above all so much love both in the romantic and brotherly bonds between the men. I adore the found family vibe they have and the lengths they would go to in order to fight for and protect each other. I still like Adrian as an addition to the group. He's a good blend of solid dependability and just enough of a shady past to keep him interesting.

So, the end of the line is hurtling closer for Cael and his gang, but I'm not sure how I feel about how quickly it's coming. I cannot wait for the next book - I'm desperate to see how the final push to save Erya's future pans out, but I just know the hangover's going to be real…I'm preparing to ride the emotional rollercoaster one last time. Right now, though, it's all the stars for this installment of Caelan, Drayce, Eno and Rayne's adventure. 5*

An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.

This series just keeps getting better and better. The characters have won my heart, and I'm ready to battle alongside them, preferably riding a dragon.

I love how the relationships among the cast have gotten stronger, and the romances have solidified. The tension is building, and I'm both excited and sad that the next book is the last. I want to know what happens, I want the cast to have their HEA, but I don't want the fun to end.

As you can probably tell from the above, this is not a standalone book. You need to read the series in order. The romance is necessarily slow burn, with not a lot of sexy times, but what's there is hot af, because it's Jocelynn Drake.

And...this book ends on a sort of a cliffhanger. I mean, the action of this book is pretty much wrapped up, but then this thing happens and...well, you'll just have to read it to see what I mean.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

For me, Embrace the Light was similar to Wake the Dead in that it reads almost as filler. Now I don’t say that negatively. There is still a lot of great character development that takes place and there is demonstrable forward movement of the overall story. Instead, it’s as if we know that this is the calm before the storm and the last moment of peace these characters will have before their final conflict. It made some areas seem a little slower paced and not as smooth as others, but things never got boring, which I appreciated. Despite the imperfect pacing, Embrace the Light still manages to tell an engaging story, one that offers up at least a couple of eye opening moments, especially regarding the ultimate intent of the gods and their use of Caelan.

In this 5th book we found out more about Cael's paternal side of the family and we met his grandpa and cousin. Haru, the cousin, is an interesting character and I can easily see him and Adrian becoming a couple.
The story is pretty long and after few books it's becoming a bit boring, but I still like all the chars(sometimes Rayne not so much).
I just want to know how it ends, though, so I can finally pass to another series.
From the start I knew the Gods were hiding something and finding out that now Cael is gonna become a god(he almost is already), isn't so shocking. But we will find out about his powers in the last book.

I've been desperate to know the truth about the Goddess of the Hunt and what role Caelan will play in the final battle, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect this. The majority of this book was deceptively slow-paced, mainly an information gathering mission in anticipation of connecting with the God of Wisdom, but the ending was an absolute race of adrenaline and suspense. I feel like a veil has been lifted and all the puzzle pieces that didn't fit quite right have all snapped into place. To say I'm excited about the final chapter feels like an immense understatement--Jocelynn Drake has once again flipped everything I thought I knew on its head and I couldn't be more thrilled about it.

Compared to some of the other books in this series, Caelan's adventure in Ilon struck a much different tone. Maybe it's because the trustworthiness of Ilon was heavily in question from the start, but the way Caelan and his companions approached the city and its people felt much more guarded and strategic than usual. It was heartbreaking, but not all that surprising, to learn that Ilon wasn't the ally Erya had trusted for decades, but I still felt the devastation Caelan, Rayne, Drayce, Eno, and Adrian experienced when they learned the truth. Truth-seeking was a general theme throughout this book, and while that did make for a slower-moving plotline than I prefer, looking back I can see how all the research these men collected spelled out the truths eventually revealed by Lore. Even Caelan's last secrets were stripped away over the course of his time at Ilon, and honestly it was a relief to know that he could no longer hold back the last of his pain and suffering from his closest friends.

As much as I wanted to rush through this book to get to the action, I did appreciate the way this story devoted time to Caelan, Drayce, Eno, and Rayne's relationships. Whether I was watching their friendships grow somehow deeper or reveling in their stolen moments of bliss, my heart was so full of love for these amazing characters. I was pleasantly surprised to get to know Adrian better throughout this story, and I thought it was really cool to tap into the network of Eryan spies in Ilon as well. It was Caelan and his companions' strong bonds that kept me going even when the situation with Safa seemed dire. I don't know if my heart can take many more close calls with death, but I know Jocelynn Drake is going to take these characters all the way to the brink before giving them the happy endings they so desperately deserve.

The guys have come a long way – and so am I with this series.

At the start I struggled a lot with the modern setting for a fantasy, then I wasn't really convinced about their feelings for another or if certain character specifics are only stated by the author without seeing any proof and of course there is my usual uneasiness when it comes to gods and their effect on a complete country (Zastrad is still annoying), but latest with the Isle of Stone there was a turnaround. Suddenly it wasn't about the beautiful covers or some stubborn curiosity about how the adventure will evolve, no, I started to be become invested and also started to believe in the characters emotionally before I felt the need to rebel against the authors claim. Might be that it helped that book 4 was about dragons, might be Adrian was a needed addition (still wouldn't have minded to see a female addition to their group).

So now the guys are going to Ilion, the well trusted ally of Erya but they have to do it undercover because something changed and it doesn't seem like it's only the presence of the Empire and therefore Safa being one step ahead of them. They have to find out that alliance between countries are never friendships and trust can't be absolute. Of course the similar applies to gods but Caelan should know that already and the idea that meeting the God of Wisdom is anything like his visits at the other godstones becomes more and more unlikely. Afterwards nothing is the same anymore.

There are still some parts I'm not easy with, still some parts I don't believe were thought through enough but now the story flow is too powerful to care too much about niggling ideas, the connection between the guys are tangible, Rayne finally is the advisor Cael is needing and Cael acts like the leader he's supposed to be while still be part of his found family … and gods are gods are gods and for the first time with this series I can't wait to get the next book. Hope it keeps the promise this book made.

Oh holy crap. This book is a full on tilt a whirl ride. It is definitely not a standalone read. You must have read the first four to understand what is going on in this book. Our gang is off to Ilon to bond with the gods of wisdom. Without giving anything away, you are in for a ride. Cael seems better after leaving the Isle of Stone. He needed rest before heading to Ilon. When they get there nothing is as it seems. Secrets are exposed and they are significant. The boys are caught in the maelstrom and they struggle with the exposed secrets and the meddling. I absolutely adored this story. Cael and Drayce become a strong unit. I may never hear the word toaster agin without laughing my ass off. Thank you Jocelynn for that. Eno and Rayne also become this strong unit who have overcome the horrors of the Isle of Stone. Adrian who was introduced in the last book is now the newest member of this family. The secrets that are exposed at the end of this book are setting us up for a showdown in the last book. Overall without giving away any of the story, this was an amazing addition to this series. I for one can’t wait for the final book.

This series just keeps getting better. (Standard series disclaimer applies here: start at the beginning with book one if you haven’t already! It’s 100% worth it) I’m going to avoid discussing any specifics of plot to avoid spoilers but….I did not see the events in this book coming, and I kind of love that. I’ve read plenty of fantasy novels, I know better than to take any powerful forces/ shadowy deities /seemingly innocuous status quos at face value, but I still have to hand it to this story, and to the series overall, for intricate plotting with plenty of twists and turns. The heart of the story is and always has been the relationships between the main characters and how they’ve weathered and grown as they work against the odds to pull off the seemingly impossible— Caelan and co. are such compelling people: imperfect and awesome and easy to root for. I can’t wait for the next book and yet I kind of never want this series to end.

OH. MY. GOD!!!!!! This book!!!! I can’t even describe how amazing this was!!!! We are about to learn some truths that will change everything!!!! A tragic story is about to comes to light. Caelan and his friends are heading to bond to the god of wisdom in Erya. But New Rosanthe soldiers are already into the city, and things are no at it seems. As always they need to discover if they have new enemies and if they were betrayal by his long time allies, but Caelan need to know the truth about the goddess of the hunt and for than he have to find the God of Wisdom if other gods don’t kill him first. This was a fantastic book, I love they we get everyone’s POV’s that gives us more perspective of what’s happening with each one of them, I enjoy this journey with them and I can’t wait for what’s coming next, it’s going to be epic because how this book ends!

This is book 5 in the series and it was another one that absolutely blew my mind to the point that I'm sat here trying to review it and all I can think is 'Wow!' followed immediately by 'I need book 6!'

The story jumps in once again after the dramatic events of book 4 and follows Cael, Drayce, Rayne, Eno and Adrian as they go hunting for the final Godstone and for Cael to bond with the god of wisdom. Like with all the other books, it is full of twists and turns and nothing is as it seems. I was hooked into the story, unable to put it down and there were definite parts that I just didn't see coming. I love these characters together; Drayce is perfect for Cael and I loved all the dragon references in this book now that it's no longer a secret. I also loved how strong Eno and Rayne were after the events in book 4 - you could tell they were healing, that it wasn't a magic fix but that they're now stronger than ever (and still have smoking hot chemistry). Adrian continues to be an interesting addition to the dynamics. I can see how his skill sets fit, he's loyal and yet still has that air of mystery too, like we don't yet know all his tricks and secrets. I'm really really hopeful we'll hear more about him and Haru in the next book as I think that would provide so many fireworks!

Overall, if you've been reading the series so far, you will already know that you absolutely HAVE to read this book. Like all the others, it's an incredible read. It's well written, the characters are gripping, there are moments when I was laughing out loud (usually involving Drayce) and parts of the book where I was reading through tears. I cannot wait for book 6 - I NEED to know what happens, especially after the ending to this one. Two months is going to feel like a lifetime to wait and I can only hope that, when book 6 is finished, Jocelynn Drake keeps writing in this world as I love it and don't want to say goodbye! If you haven't started the series yet, I would 100% recommend it. For me, it has to be 5 stars and if I could give it more, I would.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I am loving this series, and intend to buy it in paperback. The mix of fantasy and technology gives it a different spin, as does the twist on the usual quest trope. I like the strong themes of found family and friendship, and the banter between the characters. You’ll want the next book ASAP, considering how this one ends.

I love how the characters have grown as the series progresses. Caelan is coming into his role of king, and I think it says a lot for his strength of character that the gods bickering in his head haven’t sent him crazy already. His relationship with Drayce has grown especially now Drayce is no longer keeping his true identity a secret. Although… Cael is still holding back a big one. Or was. Their scenes together are sweet, especially one in particular. Love them together, and Rayne is going to have his work cut out for him.

And toaster… perfect.

Eno and Rayne are cute together, and I like how their love has blossomed. I like how Rayne is more confident in his powers now too. I loved the text Rayne sends to Drayce to prove it’s from them. I’m very pleased that Adrian is hanging around. I like him and he’s a good addition to the madness, although I’m still hoping he and someone else get together. Davi and Nina fit perfectly in the mix too, and I liked how Eno gets some closure.

The gods are manipulative and the revelation at the end of this story as to what really happened fits with what they’ve revealed of themselves so far. Nyx, in particular, is a piece of work, but the others aren’t that much better.

I loved the action scenes, and the banter. The story is a fun read with heaps of twists and turns, and that ending…. I didn’t see that coming.

*Some spoilers for previous books in the series*

I have been impatiently waiting for book 5 in Jocelynn Drake’s amazing series and oh my gosh if it didn’t deliver! I was at the edge of my seat for so much of this book and either screeching or holding back tears and it was exactly the kind of engrossing read I so crave from a highly anticipated series.

*Embrace the Light* plunges straight into the action from the first page as Caelan and co. don’t receive the welcome they expect from one of their oldest allies. Finding a city that appears to be quietly under New Rosanthe’s rule, they quickly realize finding the God of Wisdom will be much harder than they thought. With some new allies, the group must use all of their collective skills to find the answers they need as well as save their own skins.

One of my favourite parts of this book was seeing Caelan’s continued arc as he wrestles with his multiple burdens. One of the driving forces of this series is the decisions Caelan must constantly make and how he has to balance protecting the people he loves as well act like a king and do what is best for his kingdom. Not to mention the literal cacophony of unhelpful gods rattling around his head. The weight of all this is portrayed so well and I really felt for him in this book. And equally amazing is the way the rest of the group rally around him. There is such a profound love for Caelan from his companions, both because he is their king but also because they truly care for him. The sense of found family is really strong in this series and I really loved the moments in which it was brought to the forefront.

The action was also ratcheted up as we draw closer to the finale and I was genuinely worried at certain moments, clutching my kindle and having a little meltdown each time one of them was an inch away from severe harm. With the stakes as high as they are and especially given the reveal at the end of this book, I can only imagine where the final book will take us. Oh, and I am never going to think of the word “toaster” in the same way again (IYKYK). 5 big stars all the way!

This series just keeps surprising me! I love how Drayce and Caelan focused more on the "love" aspect of their relationship instead of the "lust" aspect, such a needed breath of fresh air from the books I've read that have sex so many times yet have so many problems. I have to say that I'm hooked on Drayce's character! The author didn't make him this fragile, innocent guy that needs protecting. Instead, he has the aura of youth and fun, being able to be mischievous while being able to be serious when necessary. Also, I like how Caelan and Drayce protect each other equally, not one more than the other.

Although they used the "Caelan's dying" thing twice now, it didn't feel like a repetition and was necessary to the plot. The information admittedly overwhelmed me at times, with Adrian longing for Haru, and Eno and Rayne having their own romantic relationship. And that's not even mentioning all the death and madness going around them!!!

And gosh, the cliffhanger was just enough to make us readers want the 6th book to know what happens and if they all get the HEAs they deserve!!!

Every book from this series has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster ride that has made me feel every emotion possible, and this book was no exception. It made me laugh, got me mad and frustrated, made me cry and then soothed me with all the tender moments shared, not only between the couples but also among everyone in this small made family.
This book shattered by brain with all the twists and turns, the secrets revealed, and the dropped hints of what is still to come. Just when we think we know what's going on, a secret is revealed and our mind is blown 🤯. And all the little hints given just keeps you on pins and needles waiting for the next mind explosion. I wish I could say more but it'll all be spoilers. Can't ruin this addicting story. Also, love that we get the POVs of everyone in the group so we get to bond with each character. I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the finale. Im so nervous of what more Ms. Drake is gonna put these guys through (and her readers) before they find their HEA.

This adventure is getting intense! I only thought our heroes had been through some dangerous times, especially on the Isle of Stone. Wow. I haven’t really trusted any of the gods/goddesses so far that Cael has been forced to bond with and I am definitely proven right. Plot twist! This series is really good and our intrepid group has definitely grown since the beginning of everything. I am going to be on pins and needles waiting to see how this all resolves in the final book. This series has more angst than I typically enjoy in a series, but this author knows how to create characters that draw you in and keep you coming back for more. I can only think of a handful that I can say that of.

Every time I begin a new book in the Godstone Saga I feel like I am jumping off a cliff, in the best possible way. I ready myself to get lost in the outstanding world building and stories that Jocelynn Drake has created.

What I most love about this series is the beautiful way that Jocelynn has shown love in all its glory. Whether that is love of family, friends or mate. The bonds created within our intrepid group of heroes are unbreakable.

The journey takes us once again in search of yet another God. Of course the road is paved with danger, intrigue, deceit, hope, love and so much more.
I am addicted to this series and can't wait for the final installment, even though I will be sad to see the series end.

I actually thought this was the finale but there’s another book after this one.

I don’t think my poor heart can take much more. Every time Nyx said ‘tick tock’ my heart was in my throat. I didn’t know whether to close my eyes or keep reading - I was stuck between wanting to know what was going to happen and not wanting to know especially, if it meant the end of a certain someone.

I was holding my breath at the end, my eyes were welling up and I was absolutely gutted when the book ended.

Fantastic book, enjoyed every second of it.

I cannot believe how close we are to the end of the journey with these guys! They have become so close knit now! I loved that this installment took some more time on the side to further develop the friendships and romances! These guys do not get too much steamy action with all the other action going on, but when they do it is hot! I have to mention how much I love getting all the character's POV's. It has really rounded out each guy and brought me close to all of them! I grabbed an ARC, and since this one is Cliffy, I am longing for the final book!

Wow. Just wow. This series just keeps getting better and better. Embrace the Light is the fifth book in the series and you really need to read them in order to understand what is going on. Our travellers go to Ilon to see the God of Wisdom. What happens is more adventures, lots of action and Eno meeting his brother that he never knew he had. We need to wait until July to see how Caelan and his friends deal with the Goddess of the Hunt. I must say the ending had me with my jaw dropped as it was quite a surprise. Loved it.

Holy Cow what a story and cliffhanger.

These books have been awesome. Each book has it own subplots and each has its own energy. All intertwined with the overarching series plot. This series is definitely a keeper. If you want action, adventure, friendship, found family, and love these are the books for you. Eagerly awaiting the finale.
