Non-Stop Action . . .
Cassandra and the incubus demon Zaki are walking in the darkness toward a barrier to the Light Realm, their only way out. The barrier was created centuries ago by a Shadow Mage, so Cassandra should be able to open it. Zaki is a bit nervous about meeting her mates once they leave this realm. But it is still far off and Cassandra needs to rest. He sees her constant tripping in the dark as she struggles to keep going. So he leads her to an abandoned village where a bright shape floats in a doorway.
Cassandra senses no danger, but calls the shadows to protect her – which causes the “firefly” to squeal and attack her. Others fly out from other doors and all hover at her face. What she thought was an attack was excitement at her presence, little faces grinning, arms waving at her. They are not fully human-like, having sharp teeth and grass-like hair, but definitely not bugs. Zaki called them “pixies”. One landed on her hand and ATE the shadow she had protecting her! Then dozens of pixies landed on her. They give her a place to sleep, bring berries for her to eat, and protect her while she sleeps. But just in case, Zaki keeps watch over her. When she awakens, she has a strange taste in her mouth.
When something comes through a portal, Zaki materializes his daggers to fight. But it seems the hellhound Oreo has appeared and is delighted to be with her again. She asks if her mates are with him and asks him to bring them closer to the barrier as he goes through another portal to comply. So Zaki continues leading her to the barrier.
Tristan in gargoyle form carries the blinded Donatello (vampire) on his back through the woods. Donatello does not want to slow them down as they have to out-distance the relentless Kayn to survive, so he asks Apollo (dragon shifter), who easily makes the hard choices, to leave him behind. Unfortunately, they all refuse to do so. When branches snap behind them, they run to escape, thinking Kayn has caught up. But the smell of sulfur confuses them until Oreo blocks their path and wants them to follow him. His bark will draw Kayn, but they can’t grab Oreo so Tristan says they should trust and follow him. Ahead is the sound of crashing water and, with Tristan’s coat covering Donatello from the sun, they leap from the cliff as Kayn and a dozen or more vampires suddenly stop their pursuit, not willing to run into the bright sunlight here. Oreo leads the others forward. All they can see ahead is a huge black magical wall, the barrier into the Cursed Realm. They know they can’t enter it. And Kayn and the vampires, now wearing covers, are once again coming after them. Will they turn away to run and not follow Oreo who is leading them to Cassandra? Will this reunion never happen?
