Excellent book. Finally seeing Trenda Avery get her HEA, and learning about the demons that haunted her was great. Add in getting to know "Commamder" Simon as these two both unburden themselves with each other was an amazing, heartwarming ride with laughs, danger, action, and suspense. I can't wait to visit Jasper Creek again. Of course there is also Miss Bella, the "spitfire " who entertains you as she also steals Simon's heart with her mom. And cameos, mentions, and help from some of our favorite SEALs.
His Wounded Heart is the first book in a new series by Caitlyn O’Leary – Protectors of Jasper Creek. The story is about Simon Clark a retired SEAL Commander (who made appearances in several other series by this author) and Trenda Avery, (sister to Midnight Delta Team’s Drake Avery). Because of the links noted, other beloved characters make appearances in this book but it can be read as a stand-alone. Both main characters have baggage and have been hurt in their past and both must work to heal themselves and to help the other heal as well. This book is a bit of a change of pace for Caitlyn O’Leary as there is no active duty SEAL team and therefore no military missions to drive the story. Instead, this book is about a wonderful small town and two people who are natural caretakers and protectors. The book is also a bit longer than normal for this author, but that is in part due to building the new setting in Jasper Creek and in part to a greater depth to the development of the main characters. They each had been through so much and while the pain they experienced made them both wary, neither were consumed with bitterness. There are themes of domestic violence that may be a trigger for some, but are handled well in the story. While the military aspect was absent from the story, there was no shortage of action or danger. As I have come to expect from this author, the hero comes through, but the heroine is far from helpless and is critical to success. In addition, there were teams of people to help - both the active Navy SEALS and people in Jasper Creek. Trenda had been a part of the community for a long time, but did not recognize her value and Simon quickly became an important member of his new community, so there was no shortage of people who step up. Despite some heavier themes, there are several humorous elements to the story. Trenda’s daughter Bella who is nine going on 30 is a hoot. Bella has been around her SEAL uncles enough to make her sassy, but sweet. I particularly enjoyed Bella’s interactions with Simon, who was impressed with her from the first meeting. That same first meeting involves a scene with a grocery store bagger that will either have you laughing out loud or swearing in sympathy. Jasper Creek feels like a place we would all want to live – if only for the inhabitants. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and hoping at least one of the future books is about Renzo. I am a huge fan of this author and I think this might be my favorite book by her. I got this book as ARC in exchange for an honest review. I strongly recommend this book or really anything by this author.
HIs Wounded Heart is the first book in Protectors of Jasper Creek series by Caitlyn O’Leary, featuring retired Commander Simon Clark and Trenda Avery. As a fan of this author’s books, I’ve been curious about Simon for awhile, and his story certainly didn’t disappoint! From the very beginning, I was captivated by the raw emotion in Simon’s dream and his reaction to it. These characters are well developed with authenticity and relatability. Trenda is a strong, single mom who is overcoming her own painful past, and her relationship with her precocious and hilarious daughter Bella is inspirational. The suspense aspect of the book comes in the form of ghosts from the past that pose a danger to any future that Simon, Trenda, and Bella may want for themselves. Will their love survive all the obstacles that may pop up along the way?
This book had everything I’ve come to expect and love about this author— great world building with characters from multiple series working together in order to save the day, witty banter, steamy chemistry, action, surprising plot twists, and love, family and romantic. I enjoyed the family dynamics of the Avery sisters, the camaraderie of the different military men, and the community helpfulness of the townspeople of Jasper Creek. All the characters added to the entertainment and action of the story. I loved Simon and Trenda’s connection so much, and their story kept me riveted to my iPad! I just wish it wasn’t over! And now I’m extra curious about Renzo!! No matter who it’s about, I’ll be anxiously awaiting the next book!
I received an advanced review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Protectors of Jasper Creek has just as much action as the series it has broken off from but be prepared for a LOT more hits in the felelings!
Simon has recently retired from the Navy. He's been a sailor and leader for most of his life and he's now a tad lost. He needs a new purpose in life and a way to dampen the anger and sadness at the loss of his sister's life at the hands of her abusive husband.
Trenda, eldest of the sisters of the one and only Drake Avery, is a powerhouse when it comes to being a mum. Her daughter is super intelligent, precocious and has never met someone she could not manipulate into giving her swear money!
All the townsfolk are so well characterised and I loved they way Simon and Trenda sort of grew organically together. Sure, his protective streak got triggered when she was in danger, but they still would have worked even without him having to be all up in her personal space to protect her. Bella, that kid is just...everything. I'd be proud to have her as a daughter. She is empathetic, smart and wise beyond her years.
Fabulous expansion on an already great world. With little cameos from memorable characters from the other series popping up to lend a hand. Fabulous camaraderie, banter, chemistry between the various colleagues/friends/townsfolk. The age gap may be a bit much for some but I felt that Trenda is older than her years mentally and emotionally and Simon is just such a caring man - there was no ick factor for me at all.
Oooh! This is good! There is so much fun and shenanigans in this story, but also, so much sadness.
I enjoyed how Simon kind of talks to himself in his head. He is not kind to himself when he does it either. He keeps things real no matter the emotional expense to himself. I also love how, even though he feels his life has gone off the rails, he has the kindness to treat little Bella with sweet, but gruff candor. Which brings me to Trenda & Bella. Trenda is a miracle. She has a realistic view of the world she has crawled up in. She only knows how to protect those she loves, with fierce determination and so much love and compassion. She loves her precocious little girl, Bella, with a fierceness and loyalty that only a mother who has lived a rough life like her can.
I enjoy the wholesome banter between Simon & Trenda and how they accept each other’s secrets until it’s time to talk about them. He has been so protective of Trenda and Bella from the very beginning, you can see he is on the way to healing his own heart. I love how sharp and honest Bella is and she is quick to make the people in her life follow the straight and narrow with their language when around her. She is a trip!
This story is full of courage against the sadness, determination against the evil, and love for the future. I absolutely love this first venture into this new series. This author can bring all the feels in her stories and she doesn’t disappoint with this one!
In His Wounded Heart we finally get the back stories for the oldest Avery sister Trenda and Simon Clark. They are both wounded in heart and find the strength to heal each other. This is more of an emotional one than many of the previous Seal team books from Ms. O'Leary. There was a bit of action and we met some new characters (I really hope Renzo gets a book soon because I am intrigued by him) and revisited some old favorite characters. Bella is a true spitfire and her antics are enjoyable even for someone who doesn't like kids. I normally don't comment on the writing style and I normally find nothing at fault with Ms. O'Leary's writing, but in this book it seemed to be mostly first person present tense. I enjoy dual POV and don't mind first person if it is dual POV, but present tense is not my favorite writing style. I only noticed it because a few times it switched out to past tense (also out of first person) so I found that a bit jarring. I was reading an ARC so perhaps that was the issue, it didn't detract from the story overall, still an excellent book and I would highly recommend it, but it is something to be aware if you are a person who is bothered by small editing issues. I received an ARC and voluntarily left this review.
This book was an awesome start to a brand new series, I already can't wait to read the next book. Simon is retired from the Navy and pretty well just wants to be by himself and not have to deal with other people. Of course he still needs to eat and finds the perfect woman in line at the grocery store; they actually start talking because of her adorable daughter Bella. Trenda and Simon continue to talk and be drawn together through various things; such as helping out neighbors. As they get to know each other the connection gets stronger and stronger. Not only does he fall for Trenda but her daughter Bella has him wrapped around her finger; spoiler alert (she has everyone wrapped around her finger, she's one of the cutest kids ever)' Bella's father has never been a part of her life, he's not a good guy, and she's definitely better off without him. Their life ends up in danger because of his family, but Simon is the perfect person to have by her side. It's an amazing read, and you will absolutely love the characters.
Welcome to the world of Protectors of Jasper Creek book1 New series and let me tell you this book is an absolute must read by Caitlyn Oleary. We have retired Navy Seal commander Simon Clark who is struggling with the murder of his sister and when someone suggested Jasper Creek to get away he finds himself struggling until he meets navy seal from Midnight Delta team , Drake Averys sister Trenda Avery and her precocious 7 years old daughter Bella who put a smile on his face and finds himself wanting to be around them more, but when someone is trying to kill them he will stop at nothing to protect them both. This book has a few of our favorite seals and their wives show up and we meet several people who will have you wanting to be apart of their community. I absolutely loved this book and the characters emotions and Heartbreak and pain you could feel pouring of this book and make your heart hurt right along with the book. Bravo Caitlyn Oleary I can't wait to see who you will be writing next in this fantastic new series.
I love Jasper Creek and am happy to be revisiting the place again. Caitlyn O'Leary has created a wonderful cast of characters who will capture your heart. Simon Clark needs to figure out the rest of his life and staying in Jasper Creek just may give him what he needs. Trenda Avery grew up in Jasper Creek so everone knows her history. What she doesn't realize is that the denizons respect the woman she's become. Along with her precocious seven year old daughter, Bella, she's carved out a good life but is considering a move to greener pastures. What starts out as doing a simple favor turns into a growing relationship with the retired SEAL. The more they're together the better it gets. She's leary and slow to trust her jugement. She's made poor choices in the past. Simon, being the leader that he is, begins a campaign of winning her over because he not only wants but needs Trenda and Bella in his life. But first, gliness from her past rears it head and Simon goes into full mission mode to keep his girls safe.
The entire book could have been at least five chapters shorter. There were a lot of super-flurious characters and names that really didn't move the story forward and just kind of made it confusing. It was pretty clear that they were characters from previous books but didn't really help if you hadn't read these books and she claims you don't have to read her books in order.
There were also grammatical and punctuation errors errors. For an author who has had as many books published as this one that just seems sloppy and lazy to me.
The math on the heroin's age and her sister Evie did not work. The heroin should have been about 27-28 years old yet the two girls were 2 years apart and the younger one said she herself was 27.
We were never told why Simon left the Navy. They implied he almost went to prison but they never explained it unless it was all about his sister. I really have no idea.
Overall the writing style was long-winded and often choppy. But she also had some really humorous parts and the dialogue was fun.
This is the first book in the new series Protectors of Jasper Creek. I am beyond excited to read more about the Avery sisters, a.k.a The "Avery Avalanche". I am eagerly waiting for the next book! Simon Clark has come to Jasper Creek to try and figure out what's next for him. He's recently retired from the Navy and is having a hard time adjusting. Not to mention, he still carries a burden of overwhelming guilt after losing his sister. Trenda Avery is the backbone of her family, in Jasper Creek. She's raising her daughter Bella, who is a precocious 7 year old as a single mother. However, she is not happy because most of the family is out of Jasper Creek living their lives and she is undecided if she wants to stay. She and Bella meet Simon at the local grocery store. They are attracted to each other from the start. They have quite a journey ahead of them to get the HEA they deserve. Sorry, no spoilers. I received this ARC and here is my honest review.
While this may be a new series for this very talented author there are many links to her previous series First we have Simon the former commander of the seal teams we have grown to love recently retired he is not only struggling with all the time he suddenly has on his hands but also with the guilt that he couldn't protect huis sister who died at the hands of her abusive husband. Into his life is thrown Trenda Avery (Yes she is Drake Avery's) and her daughter Bella (who could forget how she cleans up from the Seals with her swear jar) He may not ant to get to know them or start to feel again but there is no way he is keeping these two from becoming part of his life and when danger threatens Trenda he will do whatever he needs to keep her safe and protect because he isn't going to lose another woman he loves. While this book does have some suspense and danger it is aa far more emotional story than is the norm for Caitlyn and I absolutely loved it
WOW! This book has it all heartache, romance, passion and suspense. Everyone should read this book because they will love it. Simon retreats to Jasper Creek following the murder of his sister and forced retirement from the Navy. He just wants solitude and drown in his pain. That is until Trenda and her daughter Belle drop into his life. Trenda is restless. Most of her family has moved from Jasper Creek. She is emotionally scarred from the relationship with Bella’s father. She believes the Avery name in Jasper Creek to be tainted and wants to run from it. Fate and the town have other plans for them. Trends and Simon keep getting thrown together to help the community leading them out of the fog. Trendy’s past becomes her present and it is threatening her and Bella’s happiness and life. In true Avery style they close rank while Simon fights the evil after his girls. We get the appearance of the new character Renzo that I’m sure we will see more of. Grab your copy now!
I’ve been on something of a reading slump recently, and this was just what I needed to haul me out of it. Caitlyn O’Leary’s books are always good reads, but the change of scene and context in this one was truly refreshing. In a departure from her more traditional military setting, Caitlyn takes readers to Jasper’s Creek – albeit a town that includes both a retired SEAL commander and a family member of one of his former team members. Both Simon and Trenda have baggage, but each also has maturity, something hat allows them to move on, and also to fight danger when it appears. Trenda’s daughter Bella is an absolute delight – and at the rate her college fund is accumulating, she’s set for any studies anywhere in the world! There are welcome appearances from characters from other Caitlyn O’Leary books, and this is a do-not-put-down read. While fans will welcome the reappearances, it can be read as a standalone, but be warned, it may make you head back to read other series!
I loved every minute of Simon and Trenda's story! You first meet Trenda in her brother Drake's story along with her very precocious daughter Bella. Simon is a retired navy commander from the Black Dawn Seal team and is currently staying in Jasper Creek, Tennessee where he meets Trenda and Bella at the grocery store. While both Simon and Trenda have things in their pasts that are haunting them they become friends and while helping each other heal their wounded hearts they also find love. Trenda and Bella suddenly find themselves in danger and Simon comes to their rescue. This story has all the feels as you watch the relationship between these two grow and develop. Best of all is little Bella. I fell completely in love with Bella when I first met her in her Uncle Drake's story. I love all of the Avery's but Bella is by far my favorite. I read an Advanced copy of this book and am Voluntarily leaving a review ! I highly recommend this book!
This story grabs your attention from the first page.
Simon Clark is a hard core Navy Seal. Trained by the best. He’s always in control and can handle any situation. But somewhere along the way he missed the signs that pointed straight to his little sister. She paid the ultimate price. He lives with the guilt daily! He feels lost and heads to Jasper Creek Tennessee where he can live a solitary life.
Trenda Avery has a past that she doesn’t ever want to think about again. But she did get the sweetest little blessing from it. Her daughter Bella is everything she could ever want.
From the moment Simon and Trenda meet it’s like a magnetic force drawing then together. And throw in an adorable little girl, a charming nosey small town and a bit if suspense and you have another great read from Caitlyn! I excited to read the next in this series! “I voluntarily received this arc book for an honest review”
The headline for my review says it all. I've read most, if not all, of Caitlyn O'Leary's books, but this one stands out! It's happy, sad, scary, and thrilling...it has everything. I've seen Trenda Avery in other books and so hoped that she'd get her HEA one day and this one's perfect! Her little spitfire, Bella, is the most adorable sweetheart ever. Of course, I really like "silver" heroes so Simon ranks at the top of the list. They're all so wounded, but heal so beautifully.
One of the best features of Caitlyn's writing in this book is the pacing of her Southern/mountain dialogue. I've never met mountain folk from Tennessee, but these characters sound exactly like I think they would sound in real life....down-to-earth and not at all pretentious.
Thank you, Caitlyn, for such a terrific story. I'm so looking forward to all the rest of the Protectors of Jasper Creek series.
Commander Simon leaves the Navy after his little sister got killed by her husband then he killed himself. Very unset he didn't see it and protect her. Some of his friend tell him to go their. He doesn't want to get to know anyone. He goes to the grocery store he sees Trenda and her daughter. He knows they are special while in line he swears and the daughter tells him that he owes her a dollar. Trends tells the daughter not to talk to strangers so she introduced them. He can't get them out of his mind. He buys a big truck to take supplies up in the mountain because it was going to be wide storm.Trans goes to show him where to go. They rescue an elderly couple and took them to the hospital. They become friends because either could get them out of their heads. She shows him some threatening email and he gets some friends to investigate the people while he protects them
Simon is dealing with a boat load of guilt. He isn't ready to be rational about the death of his sister, until he meets Bella and Trenda. When they bring smiles to a man mired in anger can the heal him and themselves? I really enjoyed His Wounded Heart by Caitlyn O'Leary. Bella was a precocious joy and Trenda was a nurturer down to her bones. Only thing, she doesn't accept help very well. And when she meets a man who allows her to be weak and feel safe is she ready for what that will mean? I thoroughly enjoyed finding out as Simon begins to see that his is feeling guilty over something he could not change or control. He begins to see that he can only help when he knows there is a problem and help will be accepted. And Trenda is the one to teach him that lesson. Now he just needs to get her to accept his help before it is too late.
His Wounded Heart is book 1 in the new series Protectors of Jasper Creek by Caitlyn O’Leary and what a great start!
Former Navy Seal Commander Simon Clark goes to Jasper Creek to figure why he didn’t see what was happening to his sister and now she is gone forever and trying to see where his life needs to go next…
Trenda Avery and her family grew up in Jasper Creek, she left for bigger things only to return pregnant and alone. Now years later, raising her daughter Bella, she feels something is missing…until she runs into Simon at the grocery store and something clicks…
What happens when fate steps in? Sparks, healing the past, May-December romance, secrets, having your back, friends, family and the courage to move forward to a life filled with love !!
His Wounded Heart: Small Town Romantic Suspense (Protectors of Jasper Creek, Book One)
Fate brings Trenda and Simon together and I enjoyed the interactions between these characters. Bella is a precocious child and her character adds so much to the storyline.
I enjoyed the book from the onset however I did find the references to other characters from other series confusing at first. Obviously, I need to read more of Caitlyn O’Leary’s books. I kept hoping that the storyline regarding the people who live on the mountain and Renzo would be expanded but possibly more will be known in upcoming books - subtle hint. The ending felt a tad rushed to me as though certain aspects of the story were added then forgotten about.
I received His Wounded Heart as an ARC and I would recommend this book.
Simon is trying to adjust to all the changes in his life between his retirement and the death of his sister which has left him with guilt and unanswered questions. He now finds himself in Jasper Creek where he meets Trenda, a single mother, and her precocious daughter Bella who change everything.
Trenda has trusted the wrong person in the past so even though it gave her Bella it isn’t an experience she is about to repeat. From their first meeting Trenda knows that Simon is different especially when it comes to the way he appreciates her daughter and when the threats escalate, he shows her how much they both mean to him.
Trenda is strong and resilient while Simon is and determined to ensure the safety of the mother and daughter who is claimed their heart. Despite everything they are going through they prove that they are so much stronger together than apart.
His Wounded Heart: Small Town Romantic Suspense Protectors of Jasper Creek
Loved Simon, Trenda’s and Bella’s story. The quaint, stubborn and lovable characters that go into making the kind and loyal citizens of Jasper Creek, are good for Simon who is very deeply scarred by the murder/suicide of his sister by her husband. As a Protector and retired Commander the guilt for not saving her haunts him. Trenda as a naive 19 year old hooked up with a 2 faced older man was left with the pain of rejection and a beautiful daughter. Someone is trying to eliminate Bella as an inheritor from her finally in death acknowledging his daughter, but one of the other siblings will do anything to prevent it. The story has so many characters, seals etc., making it a wonderful exciting guessing who read!
I'm really excited about this new series, what a fantastic start. I was heavily invested in this small town and its people from the beginning. Retired Commander Simon comes to this town recommended by friends and team mates. Trenda, single mother to a precoscious daughter catches his eye...or rather the child did. Miss 7 going on 30 was not a shy little thing at all. Great world building here so we can get to know the town and the far reaches of the mountain folk. I enjoyed getting to know Trenda and her back story and ugly secrets. You'll be hoping she gets her happy ending. I really love how the author wove this tale, including the suspense going on in the background. I can't wait to read who the next book is about.
I always hoped we would have more of Jasper Creek after being introduced to it thru Drake and Aiden! And this did not disappoint. I love that it is longer than Caitlyn's other books. I just love being able to immerse myself in a story and get wrapped up in the setting and peripheral characters. Learning more about Trenda really also brigs more understanding to other books related to this one. Seeing how she supported and raised her sisters and the trauma of her youth really fleshed out her character. And Simon is a dream. While dealing with his own traumas, it is easy to imagine where this series will go in the future. And our darling Bella continues to collect swear money. I know she will have enough for college by the tie she hits middle school lol. Definitely read this new series!!
Former SEAL Simon L. Clark was so focused on his career, he missed an issue with his sister, now she is dead. He is in Jasper Creek to regroup.
Trenda Avery grew up here, and after a short time away is back raising her precocious 4-year-old daughter single handed. She is tired of the small-town “everyone-knows-your-business” mentality.
An emotional story of family, relationships, challenges, gerbils, ice cream and swear jars. Where your neighbor may know your business, but will also have your back.
When danger comes calling, everyone bands together to keep Trenda and Bella safe. A fabulous read.
***** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book *****
This book delivers everything you want in an excellent romantic suspense read. You have a swoon worthy hero, a strong and relatable heroine, an engaging storyline that grips you firmly and keeps you on the edge, and a romance that gives optimum feels. Simon and Trenda's story also has so much raw honesty and a just plain genuineness to it that makes it incredibly easy to relate to them and root for them. Add in some humor, steam and a huge amount of heart and you have yourself a terrific book that will leave you eagerly wanting to read future entries of the series. This is my freely posted, frank review.
Caitlyn has created another perfect little family. Simon is introduced to Bella and Trenda while getting his groceries packed. Little did he know that he had just started the trail to his perfect future. Trenda at the age of nineteen finds out that she is pregnant by the man who she thinks will keep her forever. When she finds out that he is married and his wife shows up, she ends up back home with her family to raise her daughter, leaving behind the man she thought was her chance at happiness. The three of them go through some harrowing times while he tries to keep them safe from Bella's father's family. Simon calls on his friends to help him achieve that.
