I had read The Princess and the Devil as an arc, and waited with bated breath for the sequel to come out. It didn’t disappoint.
The cliffhanger that Naya left us on had me itching to get this book in my hands for months. I’ve been in a reading slump, and as a refresher, I decided to reread book one. Immediately hooked me back in, and I finished book two in a night. (Literally, started it at 2 am, and it’s currently 5:45 am.) I just couldn’t put this book down. Obviously it’s a dark romance, so a few times Azriel’s actions were… questionable to say the least. This book was significantly darker than the first one. I wasn’t expecting the amount of gore/violence in this book. I caught myself wincing a few times as graphic violence descriptions aren’t my cup of tea, but I still couldn’t pull myself away from the book.
I also felt as though this book was spicier than the first which was totally fine with me.
There were a few times that a couple of Azriel and Asteria’s arguments were kind of repetitive. It seemed to be the same issue happening again and again, which would sort of end in them having sex and making up and then arguing about it or something similar again later down the road. Which isn’t a terrible thing, but it was a bit repetitive.
I really loved this book. Again, this one is darker, and I found myself shedding more than a few tears throughout my read. But it was very good. Some of the context in the book can be triggering for some readers (I’ll list them at the end) so I would definitely check warnings before reading.
The story was very well written. I usually only like dark romances if they’re mafia romances, and I’ve read my fair share of them. This duology that Naya V has created for Azriel and Asteria is one of, if not, my favorite.
It has serious angst, great spice, sweet fluff, and character growth that is done very well. I can’t wait for the other books for the other couples to come out.
Triggers: miscarriage/loss of pregnancy, descriptions of domestic abuse, depression
