Reckoning (The Shadow Series Book 1) by Shelby Gunter is a suspense romance. This book is a standalone, but you do see characters from Shelby’s other series The Sonoma Series.
Hailey fights crime in the shadows for justice after suffering a traumatic loss. Hailey meets and falls for former Navy Seal Dax. Both work together to try to bring the Russian Mob down.
This book is a good balance of action and hot romance. I was going to rate this book a four until I got to the twist at the end I did not see coming which bumped the book to a five in my book. I like story twists I don’t see coming, it keeps me on my toes. I like that Hailey and crew are strong badass women. I read the Sonoma series and it was nice to catch up with the characters, but Reckoning is different enough to be its own series. This book is exciting and lots of sexy scenes. I’m looking forward to Lizzy’s book and hope one day a book for Alexi. This is a great start to a series.

GREAT ADVENTURE!!!
During the daytime, Hailey is a paralegal. But when the night falls.......she turns into a deadly, justice seeking, bada$$ vigilante with The Shadow Society to right the wrongs and protect the innocent people that the law forgets. She can fight, shoot and battle like a pro and is overlooked because of her petite-ness. On her vacation, she meets former SEAL and gym owner Dax and the chemistry EXPLODES. On her next Shadow assignment, she allows Dax to join as her backup and KABOOM!!!! she walks straight into the middle of a human trafficking ring. This book was non stop from the beginning and all of the characters from Gunter's Sonoma Series make appearances.
I enjoyed these two people who seem to have nothing in common (her, a career woman from the big city and him, a former sailor turned gym owner in a small Southern town) learn that building a relationship through love makes one stronger, not weaker. No man is an island and that was something that both Hailey and Dax had to learn together because neither of them would have been able to understand that if they did not have each other. This was Mr and Mrs Smith meets Mission:Impossible meets James Bond! Looking forward to the next adventure!!!

Love Love Love!
Holy smoke show! ALL of the feels in Dak and Hailey’s story. Every single twist caught me by surprise and I never saw the next one coming! I couldn’t get enough! It’s a story I couldn’t put down, and I can’t wait until the next book in the shadow series!

The Title got be excited, the Author exceeded my expectations. Hailey, a paralegal by day turns into a fierce badass during the evening in a Secret Society. Lizard slip in an out of locked houses via the fire escape an get put your local IT Wizard to shame. Hailey goes to visit friends in North Carolina, signs up for a local defense class with the owner of the gym. Former, retired Navy Seal Dax is enthralled by Hailey. Lots of sexual encounters, mysterious, fast-paced an well put together. This honest review was given for a ARC.

Hailey didn't think that she would love boxing as an exercise as it seemed too violent, but she needed an outlet to take out her rage and pain. She had been sixteen when a woman saw her working out and asked her if she wanted to join her self-defense class. She didn't realize then that Kathryn would change her world.
With the help of Kathryn and Diane, the woman who literally saved her life, and tons of therapy she was still struggling to deal with the murder of the love of her life, but knowing she could defend herself was heading in the right direction.
Ten years had gone by since that fateful day and now she is sitting at the bar with music thumping through the club making her want to dance, but tonight is not about fun. It is about justice. Righting wrongs under the cover of night that the good guys can't accomplish by the light of day.
A handsome man with a deep voice approaches her saying that she looks like she could use and friend and would she like to dance. The dance is ending and with her arms looped around his neck the needle hidden in her ring pricks his neck and she walks away. The untraceable neurotoxin will work while he is dancing and looking for his next target. But his pending heart attack will ensure he doesn't rape another woman.
She leaves the club and heads for the bathroom of her favorite diner to trash her wig, contacts and sexy dress. After removing her makeup she heads towards the front of the diner to the woman who adopted her when she was sixteen giving her a home and an introduction to The Shadow Society.
She arrived at the law office to find it buzzing, but no one knows what is going on. The partners have been in a conference all morning and they have called for an office meeting later that day. Hailey returns to her office to contact Lizard, the tech genius for The Society, to see if she knows what is going on.
When she finds out that the partners' sons owe a huge debt and they are being forced to sell to the Bratva, she hands in her notice and heads to spend time with her best friend and previous boss Quinn who had left the hustle and bustle of New York for a town in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina.
Dax was not where he expected to be at this point in his life. He is looking around The Warehouse with its three boxing rings in the center and edging the walls was all the regular gym equipment...treadmills, benches and free weights.
He thought he would still be on missions, but he came home from service with both a destroyed shoulder and bum knee after a mission went wrong kicking him off his SEAL team. His shoulder was so bad that he couldn't hold a rifle taking away his chances to even stay on active duty.
So he came home to North Carolina and opened the gym that he and his best friend had always dreamed of. Only RJ had been murdered while Dax was out on his first mission.
I can't tell you how much I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable.
This book has it all. If you have triggers beware as this book involves human trafficking and abuse. It is full of danger, suspense and intrigue and boy there are tons of twists and unexpected connections. And if you want smoking-hot it has all the feels and so much more.
This is not the normal alpha male who saves the woman because Hailey is kick-a$$, literally. And I love how Dax accepts that and lets her do her thing without trying to interfere.
I can't wait to read more about these amazing women and the men strong enough to accept them for who they are! Highly recommend!

Argumento:
Vigilantes.
Viudas negras.
Mujeres fatales.
Hemos tenido muchos nombres, pero nuestro objetivo sigue siendo el mismo: justicia exacta para aquellos a quienes el sistema les ha fallado.
Trabajando en las sombras, mi vida se ha convertido en un libro de secretos.
Pero lo prefiero así. Mantiene a las personas que me importan a salvo del mal que azota este mundo.
Al menos eso fue hasta que un enigmático ex SEAL de la Marina con tantos secretos como yo, derribó mis paredes y se pintó un objetivo en la espalda en un esfuerzo por protegerme.
No quería involucrarlo en mi mundo.
Mi humilde opinión:
Reckning es un romance de suspenso, acción, peligro y pasión con una heroína fuerte y justiciera.
Me encantó esta historia que tenía como protagonista a una heroína estilo Nikita y el secreto grupo llamado The Shadow Society compuesto por mujeres entrenadas como agentes que hacen justicia para aquellos que no pueden obtenerla por sí mismos. Todos los personajes eran agradables e intrigantes (si bien aparecen algunos de otra serie, no afectó para mí la historia). Fue emocionante ver trabajar juntos al equipo que se formó al final para salvar a mujeres secuestradas de un peligroso grupo de trata de personas, Hailey con Dax cubriendo sus espaldas y los brillantes hackers Lizzie y Isaac, estaba con ellos en cada paso para atrapar al villano.
El tráfico de persona y abuso son los temas sensibles que presenta la trama. Sentí toda la furia y desesperación por parte de la protagonista para salvar a todas las mujeres secuestradas. Ella patea traseros tanto como Dax y me encantó que se equilibraran como un equipo. Él aceptaba su fortaleza y habilidades y la amaba como era y viceversa.
La historia de amor fue linda, divertida. Para Hailey y Dax fue amor a primera vista y me dieron todas las sensaciones mientras leía. No solo con su historia de amor sino con sus historias de vida. Me gustó que los dos no dieran vueltas, no ignoraron lo que sentían sino que lo abrazaron dándome cero angustias.
Hay algo que me dejó sorprendida. Dax lleva a patinar a Hailey sobre hielo para su primera cita pero ella se había puesto un vestido que tenía un corset. Me pareció que como tipo inteligente él nola hubiera llevado a patinar si vio la forma en que ella estaba vestida, como marine hubiera ideado un plan B. No sé, esa escena quedó algo incómoda. Más aún cuando ella termina diciéndole que no está hecha para patinar.
En general fue una lectura que me mantuvo enganchada en todo momento y no paró de mantenerme en suspense, asombrada con los giros y sorpresas a cada paso que daban los protagonistas.
Isaac y Lizzy eran los amigos hackers que ayudaban a rastrear a la red de trata y estoy muy ansiosa por leer su libro!

Hailey and Dax
This was a great start to this spin off series. I’ve been waiting for Hailey to get her book since she appeared in Quinn and Cooper’s book and her story did not disappoint. There was so much depth to her character and her backstory was pretty shocking. I didn’t realize I was a fan of vigilante justice until I read this book. It was amazing from start to finish.
Hailey’s character was such a surprise. I was expecting the same type of book I got in the Sonoma series, but this was so much more intense. Hailey was a paralegal by day and a part of a vigilante justice group by night. She joined after her boyfriend was brutally murdered and became an independent vigilante with the backing of the Shadow Society. They worked to free women in bad situations or get justice when the justice system couldn’t. She meets Dax when she goes to visit Quinn and they become quite the pair. Romantically they have some hurdles to get over. They are both very independent and Hailey lives in New York while Dax has his life in North Carolina.
I loved the way Dax and Hailey worked together. There were so many things tying them together. I loved every piece that was revealed. There were so many twists and unexpected ties. Even though this ended happily for Dax and Hailey, I know this is only the beginning.

A new-to-me author that I had the pleasure of discovering at Holidays With The Belles in Dallas this year.
I won't lie, the cover definitely and synopsis piqued my interest along with Shelby's kindness and sweet disposition. I usually always read in KU or check out books from my library, but took a chance with Reckoning and am so glad I did.
Shelby writes an amazing heroine in Hailey and I loved her personality and confidence. It seeps through the pages and you just know this chick is someone you'd want in your squad. A great plot and storyline kept me enthralled to the very end along with some interesting side characters and characters from her previous books (that I will clearly have to go back and read about). Dax, our male lead, is a guy just trying to lead a "normal" life after his military career as a SEAL. But it's not as easy as he thought it would be. Hailey and Dax team up and we're treated to two kick butt characters who fall for each other and live to right the wrongs of the corrupt leader of the Bratva mob.
This book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but sets you up for book #2, which I'm just as eager to read.

I love new authors and this author was brought to my attention by this series that I knew I would be hooked on from just the little I took in about it!!
Hailey is a powerful woman that instantly has my respect and quickly love!! She is a fierce woman who has been through so much crazy stuff that would normally send people the other way but not her! I loved her throughout the entire book and my love only grew deeper each chapter!!
Dax is something else that I wasn’t expecting!! He’s not the typical gym owner and I think that’s what started to set him apart from everyone. I could feel the spark and that was so exciting and I couldn’t wait to watch what would happen between them but I never expected THAT!!
This story has so many shockers but also sexy moments and even funny moments!! The is the all around book for men and women! I couldn’t put it down and now I’m eager for the next book!!

Really Enjoyed!
I really enjoyed Reckoning, it was a great story with a good plot and great characters. Hailey was a great heroine to read about she was independent, strong and knew her worth. She consistently made me want to read about her and know her past and how everything would ultimately end up for her. Dax was a great hero too- he was very heroic, loyal and seemed to really believe in fighting for people as Hailey does. Their chemistry was off the charts and you could see how much they cared for one another from the start, they where amazing and their devotion, love and loyalty to one another, their friends and what they believed in was admirable. The plot was good and whilst there was some unrealistic scenes i feel like you can do that in books and it can still work. Was a great read i can’t wait for book 2!

If you’re looking for an action packed, spicy read about vigilantes taking down members of the Bratva, then this is for you.
I absolutely loved Dax & Hailey. Hailey has transformed into a badass while coping with traumas of her past and Dax, ooof Dax is a sexy former Navy SEAL who is carrying around guilt from his last mission and simply feels stuck. Instalove vibes for the pair, but the connection and the understanding they have together is *chefs kiss*.
This is a somewhat of a spinoff of The Sonoma Series as characters from that series are side characters in this one, however, I did not read them first and did not feel as if anything was lacking from Reckoning.

Okay this story totally gave me Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibes and I was so into it. Hailey seriously hands down is one of my favorite female characters to date. I loved how strong and independent she was, and how she could totally handle any situation thrown at her. I also loved how steamy the chemistry was between her and Dax. They made such a great team. Loved the plot as well, although there was a few "what just happened" moments, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and cannot wait to read more from the author.

I just found shelby gunter's books and have quickly became a fan. She has a way of making characters come to life and drawing you into the story. She is definitely one of my favorites now! Dax and Hailey became so real. I love their relationship. And the suspense and twists and turns keep you from wanting to put the book down. Love love love this book!

A perfect love story that neither Dax or Hailey realize until the end of their story.
I chose five stars because it is the maximum allowed, I would recommend this book for mature readers only that enjoy stories with a happily ever after.

Wow!!
I loved the personalities of the two main characters. And the plot twist that I didn't quite see coming was epic! Another great book by Shelby Gunter.

Wow was this an unexpected page turner! Hailey is a feisty, take charge woman who will literally kick your butt! She has been through hell and back and has the emotional baggage to prove it. Now it’s literally her mission to help other women not be victims and her and her friends are incredibly brave and tough. Dax is a gym owner and former military when he meets Hailey he knows there is something special there…but he has no idea she’s about to change his life. These two together are not only a lethal weapon but a powerful force. They share a lot of deep secrets and learn that they have more in common than they could ever imagine. This was a great layered read with so much going on. The story had great details and the characters had amazing depth and told a heck of a story. The other characters really intrigued me and I can’t wait to get to know them better. I am now totally invested in this series and can’t wait to read book two.

My first book by this author and I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next in the series.

Book was hard to put down! Was very interested in what was going to happen next. I am in Love with the characters of this book especially Dax! Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I went into this book completely blind, and with an author I had never read before. I had absolutely no idea what it was about, but can say I was pleasantly surprised. A suspense romance that can be read as a stand-alone, but is/will be interconnected.
The FMC, Hailey, is a paralegal by day, and a crime-fighting vigilante by night. After suffering a traumatic loss, she begins work with the Shadow Society who work together to get Justice for women. Dax, a former Navy Seal, living in a small town, owns a gym after his Seal career is cut short.
Hailey and Dax meet, and hit it off, and work together on assignment, which leads to an even bigger puzzle to solve. I loved Hailey’s character and everything she stood for. Dax was accepting in everything Hailey and wanted nothing more than to be by her side through it all.
There was a great mix of romance and suspense with its added twists and turns. It was one of those stories that kept you on your toes and you didn’t know what was coming.

This is my first Shelby Gunter book and I am excited for the rest of this series! Reckoning checked all my boxes for a solid romantic suspense. Hailey is a badass and Dax is the perfect partner for her! I love when they team up for missions. Read this if you love…

An unbelievable story. Trying to save those that Justice has forgotten isn’t an easy task. There’s always danger lurking. Loved this beginning to a new series.
