I have scoured the internet looking for books to practice reading Korean, and everything was too easy or too complicated. I had given up on finding a mid level book that I could use for reading practice, until I stumbled upon this series from the kindle store. I absolutely love the structure of this book, and it’s built my confidence in my Korean skills so much! I have noticed myself being able to hear Korean a little better thanks to understanding more words, and that understanding came from reading this book. I almost never leave reviews on books, not because they’re bad I’m just a little lazy, but I have to let people know how helpful this book is. The stories are all just the right length to challenge your reading skills, but not overwhelm you or intimidate you. I felt a smooth transition from the simple stories to the more complex stories and that was such a benefit for me. I feel like I could ramble on and on, but I just wanted to say that this book has helped me learn vocab and sentence structures, and it built my confidence in my reading and comprehension skills for the Korean language. I’m very grateful this series exists!
The book is divided into two parts. One with English translations and one without. It's repetitive in a good way. Great for learning words in context and getting a grasp on simple sentence structures. Which is good, because Korean grammar is currently kicking my butt. One thing to note: you gotta have a good grasp on reading 한글 before starting this book and a basic knowledge of how Korean sentences are formatted.
The only reason this is 4.5 and not 5 stars is because some of the translations were not totally accurate. But I'd call them "close enough" to get the point across.
This was single handedly the best resource for me. I think the hack to learning a new language is reading it. I tried kid's books first, but those were dull for me. So it's nice to have a learning book aimed at beginner adult level learners!
This series has 4 levels. Each level has 2 books. In the author's bio., she says that she has been teaching Korean many years. Whenever she would suggest to a student, to find a book for beginners to practice reading, she noticed that most books titled with the terms "for beginners" were actually NOT for beginners. This was frustrating and discouraging for her students.
So, she wrote this series that are truly for beginners. What is so smart about this series is that each level, (2 books/level), provides 20-25 "stories"/texts, that uses the SAME 150 words. Therefore, you keep seeing the same words repeatedly and you can absorb the vocabulary. Each level adds 150 new words. So you build vocabulary progressively, with each new level.
I highly recommend the whole series for beginners, right after learning the Korean alphabet, Hangul, on YouTube.
The format of the book is great. It has Korean on the left side and English in light gray on the right side. So you can read the Korean and glance over to the English if you need a translation. The light gray makes it so it's not distraction and you can ignore it if you need to. If you read it on an e-ink screen, it is even harder to see. Half way through the book, the same stories repeat but it is all in Korean.
I misunderstood my own level. This book was too easy for me. There weren't any words or grammar points that I didn't know, but it was still good practice to reenforce what I already knew. Hopefully book 2 is more of a challenge or I'll have to jump to level 2.
This is a great book for beginners to read, has words that you’re probably already familiar with short sentences and helps you get familiar with reading them faster. I definitely think my reading is a bit better than it was when I started reading it and my comprehension as gotten better as well with repeated exposure to certain words. Definitely recommend and excited to read the remaining books in this level and other levels
This book is a bit more advanced so definitely not for beginners. You will need to already know Hangul and especially how to identify and pronounce consonants and vowels in a syllable block. It also has a dictionary of sort at the end which interprets the Hangul to English but still without the identifiable English guide. It’s a short book but with great practice material.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the style format of the book. I appreciated that in the beginning it was in English and Korean and let you get a few stories under your belt before it switched to full korean. I liked that. There was a video for you to read along to you, or to hear how things were supposed to be pronounced. I found that to be a really big help.
The book focuses on the most common 150 words. Each story is easy to understand, and because there is context, it’s better for our brains to remember vocabulary.
I use it with my beginner Korean reading group on Hilokal, a language learning app. (Trainer: RanelaMakes)
The book has easy topics and since this was beginner level I was able to finish it really quickly between working and house work. Highly recommend it to beginners in Korean.
I love that I found a book in Korean that I can actually read at a beginner level. Reading out loud has improved my pronunciation and given me a more natural flow to my speech.
If you can read Hangul and are beginning to read Korean, this book is great for you! 25 progressively more difficult stories will allow you to read stories at your level. First the stories are presented side by side with English translations. In part 2, the stories are Korean only. Part 3 is a useful word list. This is just what beginners need when learning Korean!
