“...Gave me chills…an ayahuasca trip dipped in DMT…awesome stories!” - MR, EnticeYourMind.com
"Every story has left me lost in thought and filled with questions, which is exactly what I hope for when I read good Sci Fi. Excited to see where E. S. Fein will take us next!!!" - Reader Review
A brilliant quantum physicist is fed up with her relationship and alters the entire spacetime continuum to make her partner appreciate her. Quantum computers all around the world become sentient and take control of humanity's fate. An egomaniacal genius lets loose genetically engineered mosquitoes to aid humanity, but they feast upon the world instead. A group of genderless beings living beneath the surface of the Earth go on a quest to discover the nature of existence.
The Process is A collection of four short stories featuring a cast of unexpected characters, including a carnivorous storm system, a lethally lustful AI, a cosmically stressed singularity, and a dilapidated old man that may or may not have caused the end of the world. Though the sets and settings of each story differ, the unmistakable theme uniting each at their core is the demand for and the giving of love--that vague, fickle, yet infinitely powerful idea we all know but can't ever truly explain. Incredibly, love never ceases to appear in the places and people where it seems most unlikely. Life and death--the relationship that is you--that is the process of the universe itself. Dive into these science fictional explorations of the inward mind and outward cosmos, and when you resurface, maybe you too will agree that the process is love.
E. S. Fein is the author of the Neoevolution Earth Series, two standalone novels (A Dream of Waking Life and Points of Origin), and two short story collections (Ascendescenscion and The Process is Love). More than anything, he enjoys writing strange stories about strange characters in strange situations. Some people refer to him as a lucid dreaming expert. Others know him as a rapper. But E. S. Fein just thinks of himself as a dude who likes to think about what it means to be a dude thinking about being a dude. When he isn't hanging out with his partner and son, you can usually find him reading, playing DnD and video games with his friends, going for walks while writing stories in his head before putting them on paper, or practicing yoga. Check out some free short stories on his site, Officialesfein.com.
I really enjoyed this collection of sci/fi short stories. Fein has a style of writing that makes it easy for me, as kind of a slow reader, to stay engaged in the interesting worlds and situations he creates. I love the blend of some philosophical cosmic poetry with a sci/fi backdrop.
An overall unique and enthralling mix of scifi stories. I read A Dream of Waking Life before reading this collection, and it definitely follows the theme of "weird" science fiction. The author is great at throwing curve balls and keeping you on the edge of your seat. I was particularly fond of the short story "Her Patient Pleasant Proboscis." Really great characters, and I certainly did not see that ending coming at all. My favorite from The Process is Love was the short story "Incapable." Short but sweet. That one resonated with me on a deep level.
This is a series of Short Stories within two different realms - Love - wanting or demanding it. Oneself - wanting to understand one's place in the world or wanting to change the world as to have that world understand them.
The stories cover a lot of different Sci Fi subgenres and have some very unique characters. I liked this format as it reminded me of the old Sci Fi paperback books filled with short stories of various authors. This had that feel; however, it is one person who has all the stories. If one did not know if this was one person, one would assume it is a collection of various authors with different views.
Brief description of the 8 short stories. -
Ascendesenscion mixture of sci-fi, eastern philosophy, philosophy, self longing / self loathing, and understanding of oneself in a world or a world to be. Multiverse Beauty- short and to the point. A quantum scientist changes the timeline to suit their repressed needs due to self doubt. Enjoyed the ending. Her Patient, Pleasant Probicious- is the one story that really disturbed me. A series of events involving a scientist and genetic manipulation with mosquitoes. It's a good story but as stated - really disturbed me. Company of Q- very god inspired story. Again - short and to the point. Finding the Way- definitely an eastern philosophical story of finding oneself....and the search for truth. The story follows itself...individuals trying to find their way....
The Process is Love - unique stories with a tint of love involved; that is wanting love - and demanding it. Incapable - a short view of an engineer's job at an AI termination center. The AI to be terminated has some unique capabilities. Good Dialogue between 443 and the engineer. The Snake That EAts its Tail - a stressed singularity who contemplates existence. Birthed in Transit- an individual attempts to understand his part of the world - and if he has done something. Philosophical. The Bellows of the EArth - Carnivorous clouds circle the Earth.
It's a great mixture of Short Sci Fi Stories with some interesting characters and some very thought provoking ideas.
