One lost suitcase. Two strangers. And a notebook that will change lives.

For almost fifty years, sisters Dolly and Greta have lived together – getting each other through the good times and the bad.

Except this year, Greta isn’t there and Dolly is feeling lost and alone. In memory of her sister, Dolly heads to the lost luggage auction where she and Greta go each Christmas. But her bid reveals a gift she never imagined.

Amongst the clothes is the notebook of a reclusive woman who has hardly been outside for an entire year, but who isn’t ready to give up on life. The notebook’s contents resonate with Dolly. With the support of her neighbours, retired Leroy and eleven year old Flo, Dolly decides to take on the year of firsts Phoebe had planned.

But, can you have a year of firsts when you’re seventy-two? And is Dolly ready to discover the notebook’s secrets, or are some secrets better left lost at the airport?

She’d always imagined her sister’s death would be like the ending of a movie about two sisters who’d led unremarkable lives. She hadn’t expected a sequel full of intrigue.

A few years ago I read and enjoyed Knowing You and last December I loved reading Under One Roof so when I saw Samantha Tonge had a new contemporary Chick-Lit book available on NetGalley I scooped up the chance to read it and am I ever glad I did, this was such a delightful read.

I felt for these characters right away and I cared about what happened to them, in other words, I was fully invested in the outcome in all of their interconnected lives. The story is sad yet funny at the same time and it was very heartbreaking but hopeful too. There were some heavy-hitting subjects in this one like grief, self-esteem, eating disorders, and mental health but Tonge manages to deal with them sensitively and with a sense of humour.

Tonge writes an elderly lady, a retired gay man, and an eleven-year-old girl so realistically I was impressed it was all by the same author. I love books with quirkily unique characters and the growth of every single one of them was a wonderful thing to see and read about. I especially loved the moral of the story, family isn't necessarily blood-related and you can feel loved without a romantic partner.

This one promised to be "a perfect uplifting, feel-good read" and it totally delivered. The end of the book was a tad predictable but I loved everything else so much I am willing to overlook it. All. The. Stars.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Samantha Tonge for the giving of the ARC.

Featuring ~ single 3rd person POV, eating disorder references, grief, cancer references, death of a close family member

Sisters, Dolly and Greta, have a tradition every year to go to a lost luggage auction and bid on a suitcase to give each other as Christmas presents. This year Dolly is on her own since Greta has passed away. Dolly has been in a bit of a funk these last few months ~ she hasn't been properly taking care of herself or her house, and this auction was a small effort to get back out there. Is a lost luggage auction really something? It sounds fun.

Dolly is an interesting one ~ her best friends are Maurice, a fish, and Flo who is 11 years old and Leroy. Flo is having trouble fitting in with her peers and Leroy is still sad about his recent breakup with his boyfriend, Tony. They have a great friend dynamic and lift each other up. I liked how they had dance parties in their living room while a record played in the background.
There's a bit of a story within the story as we read Phoebe's diary entries, which leads to the meat of the story ~ a list of firsts.

After a bit of a slow start for me, it eventually did pick up and I really enjoyed the beauty of the story. I was delighted to be blindsided by a few twists ~ the biggie I did figure out, but the other two were nice ones. Dolly and Phoebe came into each others lives at exactly the right time. They needed each other in very different ways to help heal. All in all, an uplifting, feel good, heartfelt story.

Sisters, Greta and Dolly lived together for nearly fifty years. When Greta dies, 72 year old Dolly is extremely lonely. At a lost luggage auction, something Greta and Dolly used to attend each Christmas, Dolly secures a piece of luggage that ends up changing her life. In among the clothes and jewellery Dolly finds a notebook. She starts to read it to learn the identity of the previous owner so she can return the jewellery. The notebook reveals a reclusive woman. Dolly knows how that feels as she has hardly been out of the house since Greta died. Of course she has the companionship of Maurice. Maurice is a fish, plus her good neighbours. With support from her neighbours, Leroy who is retired and eleven year old Flo who is fascinated by insects, Dolly decides to try and take on the lists of firsts the notebook owner had originally planned. That leads to a lot of changes and some secrets being revealed.
This is rather cute, though I must admit I certainly don’t have the fascination with insects and could have done with a little less facts about them. Flo however, is a very distinctive character and was probably my favourite. All the characters were interesting. The book deals with grief, loneliness, what constitutes a family and the value of friendship.

I think Samantha Tonge has surpassed her previous excellence with this book. Just wow.

This is uplifting, it's emotional in places, there are all manner of tough subjects within it, but ultimately it will make you feel good and have you thinking too.

And it all begins with an auction for left luggage, which sets of a chain reaction of Dolly starting to live again, after a year of grieving for her sister Greta. And within Dolly's trunk she has purchased this year there is a notebook of Phoebe's year of firsts.

Dolly decides to try to do some of these firsts for herself in the hope of reuniting the notebook and some other valuable contents of the case with it's owner. And it's once we get into the firsts, which is where the story really gets going for me, and keeps me on my toes with so much happening and fabulous plotlines.

We get to learn all about Dolly and Greta's exceptionally close sisterhood throughout the book. I loved getting to know Dolly's neighbours, especially Flo, is one rather special 11 year old, and the amount of insect facts she comes out with are fascinating, impressive, and clearly means the author did a lot of research into creepy crawlies. (Sorry Flo even after all of your wisdom, I'm still not keen on them!).

I can't really explain how wonderful the various elements of the book come together, without spoiling things, but I will say it's a truly wonderful story that I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to read, and that I feel could stay with me for a while.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I received this ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book pulled at my heartstrings so much!.

Dolly is grieving the loss of her sister Greta, she still can’t fathom that she’s gone, she’s always done what Greta thinks is best even down to holidays, Greta wanted to stay in the UK so that’s what Dolly did.

To keep up with tradition Dolly goes to the lost luggage auction as it’s what her and Greta always did but this year when Dolly opens the luggage what will she find?.

This heartwarming story is the perfect example of when you think that life has nothing left give, you get to lead another happy and fulfilling life that you’d didn’t think was possible.

* A little side note, I feel I should say that I found the stereotypes used in this book a little outdated for 2022 but it didn’t take away from the magic of the book.*

I found this book very engaging from the beginning. It was really intriguing to wonder what might be in the lost luggage that Dolly bought at the auction and even more so when she tried to find out who the mysterious Phoebe was who owned the luggage and, of course, the notebook within it. I enjoyed reading about her carrying out challenges from Phoebe’s year of firsts in an attempt to find her and reunite her with some precious items. The firsts were challenges for Dolly just as they would have been for Phoebe, perhaps even more so for an older lady who has cut herself off from the world.

One thing that struck me was that so many of these characters had aspects of their lives they were trying to hide from others or secrets that had been kept from them. Some pretty big and important secrets had been kept from some of the characters and it was sad that they hadn’t been able to be discussed. It could have made quite a difference to their lives if they had.

I liked that this was a novel featuring characters of different generations with Dolly and Leroy more senior, Phoebe a younger character and Flo on the verge of becoming a teenager. Flo’s parents annoyed me at times as they didn’t seem to appreciate what a special girl they had. The friendships between the characters, particularly between Dolly and Flo were lovely to read about. They were a great encouragement to each other and made such a difference in the other’s life.

There were some pretty big issues covered in the book. I won’t say what they are as I don’t want to give anything away but I felt that the author brought the issues into the story very well and that her readers may well finish the book with a greater understanding.

Lost Luggage may have begun with something that was lost – Phoebe’s suitcase – but it’s really all about the characters finding out about things. Finding out about themselves, finding out about secrets, finding friendships, finding connections, finding out what matters. I really enjoyed this heart-warming story and will definitely read more from Samantha Tonge in the future.

Sisters, Dolly and Greta, have a tradition where every year they to go to a lost luggage auction and bid on a suitcase which they give each other as Christmas presents. This year Dolly is on her own since Greta has passed away. Dolly decides she will still go to the auction in honour of Greta. When she opens the suitcase she purchased, she finds a notebook of a reclusive woman who has hardly been outside for an entire year. Phoebe had planned a list of firsts, so with the support of her neighbours, retired Leroy and eleven year old Flo, Dolly decides that she will complete the list. At seventy-two, it is interesting to see if Dolly can have a list of firsts.

I found the idea of a lost luggage auction interesting. What would you learn about the person whose luggage you purchased? How would that affect your life? I'm pretty sure Dolly didn't expect how her life changed. The characters were very well developed from Dolly to her gay neighbour whose partner had just left him, to the eleven year old girl who is having trouble fitting in with others her own age. I liked how these friendships were multi-generational. I did find the story slow to start, but once Dolly starts completing "the firsts", the story picks up. As the story progresses we also learn about Dolly's and Greta's life together. I don't want to spoil this book for you, so will say no more about the plot. I will say that this book made me feel good. It was definitely uplifting and I loved how all the various storylines come together at the end. There were a lot of secrets that were the source of why various characters lives were the way they were. There are also many issues that the author touches upon that will make you think. As much as this story is called "Lost Luggage", once Phoebe's suitcase is found, it sets the characters on a road to find many other things; finding themselves, secrets, friendships, connections, and finding out what really matters. Another winner from Samantha Tonge.

Seventy two year old Dolly had been keeping herself to herself since her sister’s death, unable to face people and not wanting to go anywhere. The only people she has contact with are her good friend, Leroy, trying to come to terms with the end of a realtionship, and her 11 year old neighbour, Flo, a bright light in her darker days, but who was at odds with her parents. Dolly and Greta had lived together for so long that Dolly felt as though a part of her was missing. Taking care of herself and the house is more than she could cope with.

Dolly and Greta had gone to the lost luggage auction every December and bought each other a suitcase to be opened on Christmas Day. After much deliberation Dolly decided to go this year to honour her sister’s memory.

Dolly’s bid won the case she’d had her eye on. Her purchase would change her life in ways she would never have dreamed of. The case belonged to someone called Phoebe, a young woman judging by her clothes and the journal found in the case which listed Phoebe’s ‘year of firsts’, giving the impression of someone who also seemed to be suffering. Something about the journal entries resonated with Dolly and she decided to follow Phoebe’s firsts with the hope she can return her belongings as well as helping Flo.

Lost Luggage is a wonderful, moving, multi generational story with well defined characters you can’t help but be drawn to, written with warmth and humour. The relationship and ongoing support between Dolly, Flo, Leroy and Phoebe too, is lovely as they all need to decide what makes them happy and go for it without trying to impress or worry about what other people think, even when it seems life has lost its meaning…learning it’s never too late. I loved the realistic interaction between the characters and the fact that sensitive issues were dealt with sympathetically.

There’s something extra special about a book that feels personal to you and that’s exactly what Sam manages to create with hers, and it’s not just because the location is pretty much on my doorstep! But the fact it is is amazing and really transports me into the books as I feel like I’m walking the same steps and streets as the characters and really puts me into the story.

I love the idea of this book, the idea of those lost and forgotten suitcases hiding hidden treasures (or a bunch of dirty clothes) but then the owners being reunited with sentimental items that they thought of as lost forever. The list of firsts is also a really nice idea and I almost prefer that to a bucket list, especially how ‘normal’ some of the items may have been when you first look at them.

So often what we see on the outside isn’t anything like what the person is like on the inside and I love reading Sam’s books because they peel back the layers of the characters and you feel like you get to know the true version of them.

Little Flo though was my favourite character of the book, such a bundle of energy and just a Ray of sunshine throughout, even when she was struggling with things herself! I think the overall message of this book was to keep trying and not give up, friends can appear at any point in your life and they really will get you through everything.

This was just such a lovely, heartfelt, joyous and emotional book that I couldn’t get enough of! I loved it, thank you Sam!

A book that I really enjoyed.
For almost fifty years sisters Greta and Dolly have lived together, always there for each other, but older sister Greta has died and Dolly feels lost. Greta and Dolly used to always go to an auction for lost luggage and love bringing home possible treasures. So after mourning Dolly finally decides to go to the auction, since they both loved it.
In the suitcase she brings home there are a few very interesting items, but a journal was the one that caught her attention. “Phoebe's year of firsts “ from reading just a few of the challenges, Dolly realizes the person that owned this suitcase may live closer to her than she thought, and decides to do a few of the challenges to try and find, Phoebe, and return the items she had found.
Wonderful characters, and story line. On either side of Dolly lives Leroy, retired and a close friend and on the other side Flo, a young girl about to be a teenager, who enjoys both of them, and they all look to each other for companionship and friendship.
This book is full of second chances, new discoveries, secrets held and friendships that bloom.
I will not give away any more of the story as the story line is one you must live and enjoy.

This is a story about all kinds of relationships, family ones, romantic ones and friendships. It follows the story of Dolly who is coming to terms with the recent loss of her sister. One activity they both loved was going to auctions that sold airline luggage which was not claimed. They would take it home and see if they could find clues to who owned it, and if not would sell, donate or recycle the items inside.

Dolly goes to the auction for the first time without her sister, and bids on a lot that ends up changing her life. She finds a list that has lots of ‘firsts’ on it. Dolly decides to carry out the list herself, and finds some new and old friends along the way. It’s not smooth sailing, and there is a twist or two along the way.

I really loved the characters in this book, as whilst some of them are not always nice, that is what was felt realistic about it. It really made me think about my own life and the relationships in it. By the end I felt a part of the group, and I was a bit sad when the book drew to a close, as I really enjoyed being a part of their world for a while.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for my free advanced copy. This review is my own honest opinion

Cute story about finding yourself after loss. Dolly has spent her life with her sister and when she loses her, she loses a piece of herself and her will to live. Slowly, she finds her way back with the help of the quest to reunite a stranger with her journal. I found Dolly to be interesting and her friends were likeable. Flo was probably my favorite. But while this story is cute and about rediscovery, there’s nothing new; it reads like so many other novels about the same thing. The most interesting part was the journal and the challenges but those were tossed to the wayside after the owner is found. Still, the story was interesting enough to keep reading. I just wish there was more travel involved.

I loved the characters in this story, Dolly who is still grieving from the loss of her sister Greta, Leroy who is pining for his old boyfriend Tony, and my favourite character Flo who is the daughter of Dolly’s neighbours, she is young in years but wise for her age. The lost luggage is an interesting concept and I found myself hooked from the first chapter. Phoebe whose case Dolly bought is a complex character. Full of funny moments, some sad issues and a mystery to solve I loved the outcome.

This was supposed to just be an easy read and a palate cleanser from my usual crime mysteries and thrillers.
To say it took me by surprise would be an understatement. I didn't expect to like it half as much and even cried at the end. I loved the characters in the book and their varying personalities and complexities. I liked the life lessons and I also didn't foresee one of the twists and was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this one.

Lost Luggage has been such a joy to read! I have LOVED every page!
I love Dolly! She is such an adorable character. I love that she has spent a contented life with her older sister, Greta, having been let down years before by the love of her life. I did feel sad for her though as she has so much love to give and never found another man to share her life with. Not that we all need a man to fulfil us, but I feel sad that she has missed out on that love and companionship, especially as she finds herself alone, at 70 years old, following the sudden passing of Greta.
I love the idea of buying lost luggage and wondering about the people it belonged to. Although I do feel sorry for the original owners. Are lost luggage auctions a real thing?
I love the idea of a year of firsts. I might have to see if my husband fancies creating our own.
I love the friendships Dolly shares with Leroy, and Flo, and Maurice! These characters add so much extra warmth to the story.
I loved following Dolly’s story as she discovers more about the owner of her most recent lost luggage purchase and the secrets it holds….
It’s a beautifully intriguing story full of gorgeous characters, happiness, heartache, and hope.
I highly recommend!

This story was sweet, touching and funny. We feel sorry for Dolly, until we see her grow more and more confident, as her friends encourage her to get out and do things.

I loved Flo and her helpful ideas, and Leroy is very supportive and kind.

The author shares her personal journey a little in the note at the end, and I think this story could help others who are finding it hard to leave their home.

For almost fifty years, sisters Dolly and Greta lived together. But then Greta died, leaving Dolly to fend for herself. She might have continued to survive on frozen meals in her squalid home if it hadn't been for a lost suitcase and notebook she purchased at the annual auction. Someone had planned to visit Paris and complete a dozen firsts. Dolly decides to take on the stranger's challenge in hopes of reuniting the woman with her suitcase. What Dolly finds is more than adventure. She discovers herself, too.
Like the author, I made new friends in Dolly, Phoebe, Flo, and Leroy. I want to read more books about the friends!
I like how the author addressed eating disorders - with compassion and humanity. Setbacks are common and okay.
And like Phoebe occasionally binged on food, Dolly admitted to binging on loneliness. Her humanity touched me.
I appreciated the reminder to let children live their own lives, too. Parents cannot assume that children will have the same challenges or experiences. lt's healthy to get to know our children and let them live their own lives.
The book also serves as a reminder to live my life on my terms and be wholly me. My favorite quote is "The old Dolly might be ready to fight in her own corner again." YES! This book reminded me to stay active and present in my life. We are always capable of trying new things and growing!
While this book could use a bit of polish to remove run-on paragraphs and abrupt, confusing subject changes, it's an overall delightful book that could appeal to a wide range of readers across genders, ages and demographics.

Such an enjoyable enchanting story.
Dolly Bell and sister Greta in their cottage in Manchester, go to a suitcase auction every year bidding on lost luggage and save to open on Christmas day, when Greta passes away Dolly is so lonely, these lost luggage cases only contain mostly dirty laundry or personal items like nif nafs and costume jewellery and toiletries items any vintage or sentimental value items she can't hold on to as they are what someone can't replace.
after bidding on a suitcase she finds inside a notebook belonging to a Phoebe Goodbody from Manchester and starts to read it oh if only Greta was still here. and tracks down Phoebe and she has fascinating stories to tell that even include Greta as Dolly is about to learn some almighty secrets that are all wrapped up in a remarkable tale, I loved reading it, no matter how hard times are these chapters take a hold onto you as you read. The lost luggage, the notebook and the challenges make this book a joy to read.
Loved it and could not put it down.

Seventy-two year old Dolly is still immersed in grief following the death of her sister Greta – as Christmas draws closer, her faithful friend Leroy is about to go on a trip to his former Caribbean home, so she feels lonelier than ever. Eleven year old Flo, a close neighbour, is always around to brighten her days – and there’s always Maurice the goldfish – but there are those other days when it’s difficult to keep going. But something she and her sister did every Christmas was visit the annual sale of unclaimed lost luggage – the cases repurposed as items of furniture in their now neglected home – where they sometimes found treasure among the detritus from other people’s lives.

This year, the case she buys belongs to Phoebe – among the clothing (including an expensive gilet she rather likes, and a flashy pair of trainers) she finds a notebook, where Phoebe has recorded her plans for restarting her own life and experiencing a “year of firsts”. She makes it her mission to reunite Phoebe with her notebook, and the only possible way seems to be to involve herself in the activities she’d set out on its pages. And that’s how she finds herself taking the floor in a balloon debate (well coached by Flo – who will keep going to Guides only if Dolly does something equally uncomfortable…) and then spending an awkward evening at a speed-dating event (with even more coaching from the wonderful Flo). And, by the time she finds Phoebe, Dolly’s lonely life has been rather transformed as she finds herself and a new sense of purpose – until that’s almost derailed by an unexpected reminder of her past and a few uncomfortable discoveries.

The characterisation in this book is just superb – the author made it so easy to identify with the seventy-two year old and the eleven year old, and their exchanges are simply wonderful, each of them supporting the other. But it’s a nicely multi-generational tale too – Phoebe’s a younger character, and Flo’s parents (who really don’t seem to see how special she is) feature in the story too. And I really loved Leroy – he’d lost sight of what would really bring him happiness too, and I really enjoyed his journey. As for Dolly’s story – I really don’t want to spoil it for others, but there are moments of sheer joy and others that’ll move you to tears. The friendships are quite wonderful – there’s immense love and support between them all, the family they’ve all chosen to be part of – and the whole story just makes your heart overflow. The writing is excellent – there’s a lovely humour running through the whole story, some perfectly handled emotional moments, and a few particularly difficult issues very sensitively dealt with.

As the story built, every character won their place in my heart – I felt quite a sense of loss when the story ended and I had to finally set the book aside. Just gorgeous – tremendously engaging, heartwarming and very moving, and life-affirming in every way. I loved it.

Adorably British and very charming. Such a feel good, innocent book about friendship, living life, forgiveness, and second chances. I truly adored each of the characters and the narrators get an A+ for their theatrical performance in the audiobook version. Giving this one a 3.9 because I couldn’t help but like it and it warmed my little heart – not enough to cry but still! Dolly is in her 70’s and she has just lost her best friend in the world, her older sister Greta. They have lived together for fifty years, never marrying, but sharing their love for their beloved goldfish Maurice, their neighbor Leroy (gay, Jamaican man) and the eleven-year-old girl who lives next door named Flo. The book opens a year after Greta’s death, and you get the idea that Dolly has just been existing during the last year. She has not taken care of herself, cleaned her home, or ventured out much. Every year, Dolly and Greta would go to a lost luggage auction where they would bid on lost suitcases. I thought it was very cute of the author to include the role that lost luggage has played in the sister’s lives which is evident throughout every inch of their home. In some instances, they have used the actual cases as home décor, and I enjoyed Dolly reminiscing on the backstory of each case and its contents. Dolly gets the nerve to attend her first auction alone where she procures a suitcase which contains the journal of a woman named Phoebe who has listed out a new activity she would like to try each month – calling it her year of firsts. Determined to get the notebook and some jewelry back to the rightful owner, Dolly attempts some of the challenges around the city in the hopes of finding Phoebe which she eventually does. Finding Phoebe reveals secrets tied to Dolly’s own past, some of which are heartbreaking. Now Dolly has to find the will to forgive and move on, with the help of her newly acquired friends. I just loved all the characters in this book, they are like this little band of misfits that somehow complement one another. Each of them has their own internal struggles and through talking and friendship, and in a way, they end up being therapeutic to each other. I don’t know, I thought this book was just cute and feel good without being corny. The author struck the perfect balance with this one.

Lost Luggage is another unique story from Samantha Tonge.

From the premise (I just had to find out if lost luggage auctions exist and they do), to the refreshing ages of the characters (and the bonds they have), this story has drawn me in.

It’s not often you get to read such an inspiring story whose main character is 72 years old.

Dolly is quirky and eccentric with a fab sense of humour. When we first meet her, swamped by grief, she’s given up on herself and her life. Through the notebook of firsts, we get the privilege of seeing her slowly emerge from her self-imposed isolation and begin to live again.

But she doesn’t do it alone. And she isn’t the only one whose life turns around.

Leroy, Flo and Phoebe are fabulous too. I don’t have one favourite character from Lost Luggage, I loved them all! The bonds they have with Dolly warmed my heart.

Such a broad spectrum of ages with spot on perceptions of how they view the world (had a giggle at some of the youngsters’ perceptions). Each age group has their own challenges and it’s clear that Samantha Tonge has used her own experiences to portray them sensitively and realistically.

There are a few twists that make sense of a lot of things. I did work them out but it didn’t have any impact on how much I loved this story.

Lost Luggage is a reminder that we’re motivated by our own experiences to do things that protect others. That decisions we make come from a place of love. And it’s our tribe, the network we build, who help us get through the hard times and celebrate the good times with sincerity.

If you’re feeling in a rut, I think you’ll find Phoebe’s ‘Year of Firsts’ motivating and maybe you’ll come up with your own 🙂 In fact, if you’re in need of feeling uplifted, Lost Luggage should be on your radar. Considering where we start, this is such a joyful read and I finished the story with a beaming smile.

I’ll leave you with this quote from the book that’s become my mantra:

“… the past belongs to nostalgia or regret, the future to hopes or fears … whereas the present belongs to nothing but opportunity …”

Every year Dolly and her sister, Greta, attend a lost luggage auction where they each select a piece for the other to be opened at Christmas. Since neither of them ever married or had children, this is one of many decades-old traditions. But now Greta is gone and Dolly tearfully attends the auction and selects a piece with a pink and pine botanical pattern She takes it home to open - alone. Inside she finds a designer dusty-pink gilet (vest), some very trendy trainers, a yellow crystal bracelet, and a silver necklace with a ring hanging on it. Not a bad haul!

But this time, the luggage comes with some sticky strings attached - there is a notebook inside that indicates this piece belongs to Phoebe Goodbody - but it's not just a notebook - it's a journal. Oh my. Despite Dolly and Greta's vow to never read anyone's personal papers inside the luggage they acquire, Dolly feels that it's her noble duty to try and find the person so she can at least return the jewelry. Phoebe has written a list of "firsts" that she wants to try in the following year. This sends Dolly on a mission to try all the of firsts, too, in hopes of coming across Phoebe in the act. This also means leaving the comfort zone of her home - which she has kind of let go since it's just her, now.

With the encouragement of her inquisitive and insightful little neighbor, Flo, and her broken-hearted and trying to relive his youth neighbor, Leroy, Dolly starts checking off the "firsts" and is just starting to enjoy it when her quest results in an old love reappearing on her doorstep - one that she had believed abandoned her in her youth. When the truth comes out, she isn't sure that she ever really knew her sister, Greta, and she must decide if she can forgive and let love into her heart.

The characters in this story are lovable and real and I enjoyed how they encouraged one another to be their true selves while trying new things. There are some far reaches as to the coincidences of some of the connections, but that doesn't make it any less of a heartwarming tale.

It’s hard not to sound like I’m gushing, as I review this book, but it really is rather special. Samantha Tong has created a group of people who couldn’t be less likely to be connected, yet they work perfectly. The story examines the loneliness of life’s misfits with a kindness that should be more common in the modern world.
As the synopsis explains, Dolly is feeling bereft after the loss of her sister, Greta. Her life has taken a downward spiral and her lack of self-care has reached challenging limits. Craving some of the routine that she enjoyed with her late sister, Dolly visits a lost luggage auction, as they had done together for years. Digging through the case that she buys, she discovers a notebook with a list of firsts, which captures her imagination, and offers an opportunity to reunite some of the items with their original owner.
Dolly has an eclectic mix of friends which include Leroy, her retired neighbour and Flo, the eleven-year-old daughter of her other neighbours. She also has a fish who she dotes upon. As the story progresses, we witness this rag-tag group each discovering their own potential, and their transformations are beautifully handled.
I cannot tell more of the story without running the risk of revealing spoilers, which is something that I would hate to do. The layers of this story are carefully crafted, and as they are peeled back, the reader and Dolly learn more about a past that is filled with assumptions and heartbreak.
Picking a favourite character, other than Dolly, is a simple task; I just adored young Flo and her story arc. I found myself willing her to find the love and acceptance that she was craving and to find a way to bond with her parents.
This book is an absolute triumph and I feel privileged to have been able to read an advance copy. It’s going straight in as one of my books of the year.

Facing up to the future after loss can be hard to do
As the characters in this book found very true.
However, with love and support from folk who care
Sometimes you can surprise yourself at just what you dare!

When someone you love departs,
They take with you a part of your heart.
It doesn't matter why they've gone,
The problem is having strength to keep moving on.

For Dolly, after fifty years or more, being two
Living without her sister is hard to do.
For a year on life she turned her back
But her friends are there to get her back on tack.

The sisters always went to the lost luggage auction where
They'd bid and buy two cases at Christmas to share.
This year Dolly buys just the one
To remind her of times that have gone.

Into the case on Christmas Day she takes a look
Discovering clothing, jewellery and special notebook.
The book shares plans something new each month to do
And Dolly now plans to try to do them, too.

With support from her neighbours, Leroy and Flo
She's determined to give the challenges a go.
And these friends are facing challenges, too,
Supporting each other all the way through.

With family dramas, this is inspirational, too,
Live life to the full, whatever you do!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

Favourite quote from this book:

"...the past belongs to nostalgia or regret,
the future to hopes or fears....
whereas the present belongs to nothing but opportunity,
if you've the gumption to."
