Race Me in a Lobster Suit: Absurd Internet Ads and the Real Conversations that Followed

Knit me into a cocoon...help me eat a burrito...pretend to be a chair at my dinner party...wrestle a komodo dragon...race me in a lobster suit. Author Kelly Mahon posts absurd gig ads online, and shares the conversations she had with the brave souls who wanted the job.

We're living in a gig economy. But would you respond to an online ad seeking someone to search for escaped ants? Or take an offer for a free tattoo by someone who "needs the practice?" How about a mattress for sale "tainted by geriatric love" or a workout plan that involves throwing Virginia hams? And if you hit reply, and the poster is sketchy about the details or offers to pay you with a gift card for clams, how long would you keep the conversation going?
When NYC copywriter Kelly Mahon started posting weird, fake gig ads as a creative outlet, she found that there was someone interested in every bizarre offer she came up with. And the subsequent awkward email threads were equally hilarious and bizarre. Race Me In A Lobster Suit collects Mahon's funniest fabrications, plus the hysterical email conversations that followed as she ratcheted up the crazy. While some respondants become suspicious, others seem willing to play along with the joke. And don't worry, everyone involved agreed to share their emails in the book, so there are no hard feelings.

In a world where it seems like everyone's suspicious of everyone else, it's nice to know that there are still people who will at least consider helping a stranger reenact a recurring spider nightmare, or explain the principles of pig Latin to a baffled mother of three.

Race Me in a Lobster Suit by Kelly Mahon is a 2019 Quirk Books publication.

If you know anything about Quirk Books, you know to expect the unexpected. This book, however, almost goes beyond the pale.

I’m pretty picky about humor or comedy in movies, television and books, having long outgrown base humor, or anything too silly, which is most comedy is today. But, because this book is supposed to feature actual correspondence, the human element enticed me to take the bait.

I worked for the public all my life, so I know how people can be. After many years of witnessing so many insane human behaviors, I commonly boasted that nothing could possibly surprise me anymore. In fact, on more than one occasion, a friend or relative suggested I write down all my experiences and publish them. Of course, my experiences were not choreographed in anyway, but now I’m thinking these situations may not translate so well in print.

But, if the outlandish conversations relayed in this book are indeed true, and the author is not pulling a gag on us, which I suspected on more than one occasion, it proves that truth is stranger than fiction, and the next time I read a book and start to question the realism or plausibility of it, I will remind myself of this book.

Despite the bizarre-o set-up, some of these e-mail conversations did make me chuckle. They also horrified and mystified me. It is scary, and maybe a little sad too, that people responded to these ads. No matter how desperate I was financially, could I consider doing something so outrageous- like being hired to tickle someone, for example.

However, according to the author, the emails printed here were done so with the permission of those who answered the ads. So, I guess they must have a self- deprecating sense of humor, or maybe they were offered compensation- who knows.

Bottom line-

I was amused to some extent, but mostly I found it a tad disturbing. I’m not sure what that says about MY sense of humor- but I did try to see the appeal and humor here. For the most part, though, this type of gag/prank humor doesn’t really appeal to me. It was just a little too silly for my taste.

On a more positive note, I think this author does have a knack for coming up with quick witted comebacks. It is possible she could find a niche in improvisation or comedy writing, but perhaps it would be best not use real people to experiment on.

In theory, this sounded like it was going to be hilarious. An author who got bored enough to start posting ridiculously absurd "help wanted" ads on the internet and publishing the email conversations that ensued? It reminded me of a nonfic/humor collection I've loved before, so I honestly thought this was going to be a big hit—and it is! At first.

It starts off pretty funny, if a bit tedious—I definitely found myself skimming some of the stories because I was just getting bored of the constant repetitive nature of the messages (not that the emails are similar, but that each specific "incident"'s conversation would have a lot of messages where the author repeated themselves). After a while, though, I began to notice a theme with some of the email conversations: many of the people responding to the ads really needed the money and were willing to do anything to get it.

Maybe this is just my own personal issue, but once that "clicked" for me, it was impossible to view this author as anything other than a raging jerk because, I mean, imagine someone offering you hundreds of dollars to do some weird but feasible thing when you really need to get your rent paid or buy your kids groceries, and then after days of having your hopes up, they tell you it was all a joke so they could make money off of this book. I dunno, y'all, I'm a mom and I'd do anything to keep my kid fed and safe and I'd probably come after somebody over this shit if I had been forced into a desperate enough spot to respond to Mahon's ads.

I dunno, I'm being a spoilsport and I know it, but this kind of sucked and I have no respect for the author.

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I am both a big fan of the offbeat and the absurd and also strongly believe in the power of laughter, so this sounded intriguing and highly original. A book that takes those crazy pranks that take place online daily and collects them together in this one irreverent volume for readers pleasure. Not only that but each is accompanied by complementary cartoon illustrations. This provides some light relief from an increasingly stress-ridden existence, but it will not appeal to everyone, and some entries were funnier than others. It's an admirable idea - to provide a rather unique comedy creation for a general audience especially those who may not know how or where to access similar pranky comedic content online.

However, how much these sketches resonate with you will depend on your sense of humour; those who find pranks, in general, amusing or have a rather juvenile, silly or crude giggle preference will likely laugh a lot at this. Unfortunately, I wasn't that enamoured and found it too stupid, so my laugh-o-meter was almost, almost running on empty. If you appreciate more nuanced, intelligent comedy this will probably have the same impact on you as it had on me. Definitely a case of personal preference, though, so this should be foremost in your mind should you be querying whether to purchase.

I must add that in an age of such high unemployment and poor job prospects for many around the world these fake job opportunities', once they had interested respondents, spiel began to feel very cruel and callous. It speaks to peoples desperation but that in no way means duping them is any less than a heartless act.

Many thanks to Quirk Books for an ARC.

8 out of 10

Race Me in a Lobster Suit is a book full of the author sending out fake job offerings, and pretending to be random people in a lot of different absurd situations. This book reminds me a lot of some of the comedy that James Veitch does, and I couldn't help but really enjoy this book, despite feeling a little bad for some of the victims of these pranks.

LOBSTAH SUIT

There are some ridiculous situations presented in this book, and it's really interesting to see who will believe the presented situation; some people will just be like, "Are you serious?" I also really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. I do get some of the criticism that this book gets, but this book is exactly my type of humor and I sincerely enjoyed it. I had some great laughs with this, and would definitely recommend it if it sounds interesting to you.

I thought this book was going to be about people meeting online, and then doing fun & weird things. Nope. The author is just trolling people and wasting their time for absolutely no reason. I wasn't really amused by any of the stories, and it all felt so pointless. People needed money, and the author is kind of mocking them for it from behind her computer. This didn't go in the direction that I expected, and it didn't seem like the "good-natured comedy gold" described in the synopsis.

Everything that is wrong with society and the internet today is contained in this book. Smart arse trolls mocking the innocent and gullible. This is like laughing at the vulnerable people who fall for get rich schemes from Nigerian princes - not everyone is as savvy as the more technologically literate amongst us. In a lot of cases, people's desperate need for money provides a springboard for their responses and some people clearly will take risks to try and make ends meet - they'll agree to do seemingly dumb things, they'll respond to emails that may seem a bit weird, they'll fall for trolls like Mahon...
While I appreciate that this supposed to be a bit of light relief, at its heart is someone trolling people on the internet - out of work actors, people desperate for a bed, people trying to make a buck... Mahon deliberately sets out to hoodwink and troll these people, and push them to humiliate and degrade themselves in the name of humour. This whole book left a bad taste in my mouth. Shameful.

Funny, but tiresome to read prank after prank. Probably better consumed once a day instead of one after another.

First I want to thank Quirk books for sending me this Arc of Race Me In A lobster Suit. When I was first asked to pick books from a list that I might be interested in reviewing, I chose this one because of the funky title and the synopsis sounded fun and playful. However that is not really the case from the stories within.

You might be wondering why the one star? Well, I unfortunately am not the correct audience for this particular book. I found 28/29 stories to be drawn out and mean spirited. I’m not a fan of prank videos and this collection of internet ads on Craigslist are time consuming and wasteful pranks on innocent people. Almost all of the people who responded to the ads seemed genuinely interested in helping and our author played them for fools for a prolonged period of time.

You might think... who is dumb enough to think these kinds of ads are real? If they think they are... maybe they deserve to be strung along like this? Or “hey it’s just a bit of fun... not hurting anyone”, but the thing is it’s crying wolf. I just can’t jump on board with this kind of free time fun.

The one story I did enjoy was the ad for help because our author was trapped upside down in a rope web at the zoo by her nose ring. The person/persons who responded took this as a joke and responded in kind, which I was happy to entertain. No one was “hurt” with this ad. Both parties walked away chuckling. That is not the case for the other 28 people. They were upset, tired of the charades or completely confused at the lack of maturity with the author.

This quote was taken from the introduction on page 11. “The toughest part of the project was coming clean to the strangers I’d been telling the wildest lies of my life to... I’m happy to say most people were amused by the banter. However, some were... not amused. Those reactions ranged from silence to a mixed bag of ‘Go [fill in the blanks]’s”.

Yep I would be the latter. I just really disliked this book. I did however read the book in its entirety and can say the things the author came up with for the ads were bizarre and fun sounding. Well not the DMV photo shoot or break dancing video.

Take what you will from this review. I have nothing against the author and wish her the best of luck with her future endeavors. I’ll just be mindful of responding to any fun sounding ads on Craigslist.

Rounded up from 3.5. I give this author high points for creativity and ability to banter. The initial ads are for the most part entertaining in and of themselves, but then you get to read the back and forth exchanges with the interested parties. Kelly Mahon can "big fish" a story and outlast most contenders. At times I thought folks were strung along too far. My favorite request was the snake fashion show. I do think many will find this book to be a comic relief from the stresses in their lives and we have Kelly Mahon to thank for that.

Thank you to Quirk books and NetGalley for making this digital ARC available.

One day, feeling bored, Kelley posted an ad looking for someone to dress up as a lobster and race around her living room. It pretty much snowballed from there... This book is a collection of the ads placed online and the real replies and email exchanges. Amusing, but often quite ridiculous. It's amazing what people will actually believe!

You read that right! The title is Race Me In A Lobster Suit. This adorable book was sent to me by the good folks at Quirk and I am forever thankful to them. This was a quick and enjoyable read.

This book is full of short stories/chapters where the author had placed absurd ad requests and then collected the responses after engaging the people in converstaions. I often thought I had a knack for coming up with absurd and hilarious things, but this book proved me wrong. I would never have thought to place an ad for someone to come to my apartment and race me wearing a lobster suit. It proved that there is a big world out there and people are willing to do nearly everything and anything, sometimes just to help others out. She asked people to be a human pinata, to knit her into a human-size cocoon, to be a human canvas when she wanted to practice tattoos, and so much more.

While there are some people that could possible read this as not humor, but more on the disturbing side, I’m here to say: don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never make it out alive. Choose to see the humor in things and you’ll feel better.

So glad I received this book for free. I usually love books from Quirk Publishing but this was a huge disappointment. I just found it stupid. Not silly or funny. Couldn't even finish it. Rather spend my time reading worthwhile books.

I think this is a generational thing, but I did not find this either side splitting or even remotely funny. The concept could have been mined to greater effect if the situations had been more absurd, but for instance the ad seeking a contractor to build a pool in an apartment living room in Flatbush had probably the most honest response. "stop wasting my time."

I received a free Advanced Reader's Cooy from a book event at my local library.

A New York City copywriter posts fake, outlandish job advertisements on Craigslist. She comprises the most amusing ones (including the email dialogue).

I have to be honest, I was absolutely impressed with her creativity and loved the responses, especially the ones from those willing to participate.

Here is one of my absolute favorites:

"Need a date for company holiday party" - Paul answers her ad, and she asks him to act as her fiance, who happens to be a cardiothoracic surgeon with a Judo black belt. Additionally, speaks four languages and is allergic to gluten. Finally, Ryan Gosling is his third cousin, and he proposed to her at the top of Mount Killamajaro.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I saw this one on Netgalley and I just laughed so hard when I read the title and the description. Good grief, what could possibly go wrong with absurd ads and people reacting to it?

Just sad that I couldn’t read this one on my Kindle as the format got quite scrambled and the illustrations didn’t show. I had to read it on my PC which made my eyes cry.

But this was just such a delight to read, though I have to be honest and say that I highly doubt the authenticity of these stories. Maybe she did write all those ads, I can believe that (as I have seen some hilarious ads myself in newspapers and magazines, but the conversations? I have no idea if any of that is true, it just seems too weird and absurd and I just can’t imagine people going that far or her taking it that far. Plus I do feel it is a bit shitty to lie about things, making up an ad is one thing, but lying about things/making up a whole story seems a bit too far. Then again, I guess if she hadn’t done that the conversations would just have ended quite soon, now they went on and on for quite a bit, getting sillier and more and more absurd. Like the cocoon one, I didn’t think it could get even more hilarious but then she told about the previous years and all she wanted with it and I was just laughing.

There are various categories, we first start with stuff for herself, then there are events. There may have been more, but I was mostly concentrating on the ads/the conversations. I only noticed these two because it was such a change.

All in all, this was hilarious, I do hope she will write another book filled with these hilarious ads and conversations.

This book is hilarious. Every chapter I found myself laughing at the ridiculousness of it all and imaging how it could easily be me pulled into one of these conversations. This isn’t exactly a five star book for me, but it is currently rated so low on goodreads that I know a lot of people won’t give it a chance. Therefore, I am raising it up hoping that more people find it and get a good laugh too. If you were a fan of Jenny Lawson’s writings, I feel like this would be a good fit for you.

This is a crazy book, just no other way to put it.
If you saw ‘Pranked’ which was on TV or ‘Crank Yankers’ which was a puppet TV show based on prank-calling, you will get the idea of this, which is based on the author posting prank ads on Craigslist. The resulting email ‘conversations’ from those ads are contained within this book, and if you hate the idea of unsuspecting people being strung along on fall pretenses, this isn’t for you.
If you can put all seriousness aside and maybe have a few minutes at a time to read it (in the guest room? the loo?), you will probably read this with eyes widened and emit a chuckle or two.

If you look at this too seriously you will see that lots of people wasted their time engaging in the banter necessary for this book:
People actually entertaining the idea of dressing up snakes for a fashion show. Seriously considering crocheting someone into a cocoon for the winter. Pretending to be someone’s made-up partner to be taken along to a work party. Sitting for a tea party dressed like a doll.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the fact that these people were strung along for the sake of author Kelly Mahon’s crazy idea for a book. BUT just like you can’t look away from a car crash on the highway, it’s hard not to read this and marvel WHY people are even considering doing these things. Some of them are so outlandish and ridiculous that I can’t even believe they would do them for money, let alone free. But it takes all sorts to make this world interesting, right?

I don’t think Mahon put this together with any malicious intent, but a laugh at others’ expense is hard to absorb. That said, if you answer an ad for racing in a lobster suit, you sound like you’re up for anything (or at least maybe a laugh).

3 or 4 stars because it made me laugh out loud, not because it is a literary feat! I read this book at the perfect time for me, really needing a pick-me-up, and this book is crazy. Mahon was feeling creatively-restricted and so decides to amuse herself by posting crazy wanted ads and stringing along the replies for as long as she can. Examples include feeding her a daily burrito on the sly because she is in a full-body cast and her mom is banning them, installing a pool in the living room of her rental apartment while the apartment below is empty, and of course dressing up as a lobster to race her. The ads are amusing and crazy but where the laughs come are the email exchanges that follow. I think you would need to be in the right frame of mind for this, willing and able to laugh!

This is a cross between the Henry Root letters (crotchety old English guy writes to famous people and winds them up without their knowing it) and his more modern offspring, of the Danny Wallace, Dave Gorman, Tony Hawks kind of lark. So we get our author trying to arrange for a bloke to dress as a lobster and chase her around her carefully decorated apartment; another to fetch a pipe organ from a church to annoy the neighbours below; yet another to install a swimming pool because the rented flat below hers has been vacant for a whole month now and she's ready to just dive in. It's quite well done – I've read many sub-Root books which just don't have a sense of humour or creativity, and this author does, as the whole sustained narrative of the fake fiance proves. But it is still a little shy of being brilliant. Partly it just shows how stupidly gullible many Americans are – and if you think that's trashy, think of the bloke asked to feed a burrito-addicted paraplegic, who can't feed himself but can write emails, or the bloke trying to negotiate a rate for modelling nude for a sketch group while wrestling Komodo dragons. But this is also the first book of this kind I've encountered to fully highlight the oddities of the gig economy, when a bloke can set himself up as a professional fetish tickler, someone can monetise a lesson in pig Latin, and another man knows to bring a friend along ($60 extra) when asked to be a knife-wielding tarantula for dream therapy.

So... I wanted to read this because I work in advertising, so basing on the title, I thought "internet ad" meant big marketing campaigns and the feedback it got from the audience (A stretch, I know! lol)

So apparently, the author posted Craigslist ads with very weird jobs and documented the conversations from the respondents (with consent)

The author is witty, managing to create a rich backstory for each character she comes up with. The pranks though, not my type of humor. Also, I won't begin to discuss the ethics of the book (because it's not, probably)

The book is good if you're waiting in line, to be read in quick sporadic bursts. Not meant for a one time big time sitdown session as it could get real old, real quick.

The author, however, is clever. Wouldn't be opposed to hear her in a stand up comedy show or another novel.

The first time I tried reading this I didn't finish it because it was just stupid with no humor. I finally finished it and realized I should have left it as DNF.

This was a hard book to rate, because it's a hard book to categorize. Basically the book consists of email transcripts that were generated after the author posted some ridiculous ads on Craigslist (and the like). She trolled people about everything from snake fashion shows and becoming a human pinata to trying out a cryogenics contraption she'd jury-rigged in her shower and being a nude model who wrestled with a Komodo dragon. The "normal" requests included being a fake fiance, house-sitting, cooking for her and bartering for kitchen appliances—but even those got absurd. (She wanted to trade a Beanie Baby named Ewey for a blender. When to person said no, she upped the ante to giving away her own cat.)

The book was a super easy read, and since each transaction is its own chapter, it's a book you can easily put down and pick back up again at a later date (when you need some theatre of the absurd) without missing a beat. On the downside, there's also not much *to* this book. I didn't learn anything, other than that starving NYC actors really are willing to do just about anything for a buck—but I already knew that. And it definitely reinforced the "only conduct internet business in public spaces" lesson. Otherwise, someone might hand you a lobster suit and tell you to start crawling around on the kitchen floor.

To be honest, when I picked this book up, I didn't realize "internet ads" meant those posted by everyday folk. I was actually expecting an exploration of internet "commercials" which had been executed by professionals, albeit those who had seriously, and hilariously, missed the mark—like the Razzies of the Clio Awards. Someone, please write that book...

*Disclaimer: I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My favourite comedian is Joe Lycett, a man famous for absurd email exchanges and playing with spam mailers, so going into this I thought I would love it. At first I was enjoying it but as the 'stories' went on, I felt more and more uncomfortable. Each section starts with the absurd internet advert that Kelly Mahon posted and then follows with an exchange with the prospective employee. Some of the posts were amusing but most were just plain weird. Not only did the book get repetitive as the messages went back and forth but I started feeling increasingly uncomfortable and couldn't pin point what it was until reading reviews afterwards.

The author does this exercise for the humour and in many cases it is quite funny. However, what I think she, and the publisher, doesn't realise (or care about) is the fact that there is a person on the other side of these messages that have taken time and in some cases spent their own money preparing for these 'jobs' that in the end they are told is just a joke. I don't think it's fair and I don't think it's worth it because in the end this book is repetitive and boring. I made myself finish it because it was sent to me by the publisher but unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it.
