Recently, I’ve become quite selective in giving 5-star ratings to books (both fiction and non-fiction), but this graphic novel fully deserves it.
Adaptations often come with certain expectations, but for me, this graphic novel does an excellent job, especially in visually presenting the historical context of philosophy—from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance.
Key figures from Ancient Greece, like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, are depicted in an engaging and accessible way. The narrative then moves to the Middle Ages with philosophers and theologians such as St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, who worked to reconcile faith and reason. The Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes) also receives notable attention in this book.
I’m eager to see how the story continues in Volume 2.

Beklediğimin çok ötesinde beğendim!
Bu uyarlamanın köken aldığı kitap çocukluğumdan beri sürekli karşıma çıkar. Görürüm, duyarım bir yerlerde. Daha az tüketim ve sürümün olduğu yılların bestseller larından sanki (sizde öyle hatırlamıyor musunuz?)
Nedense ilginç olmasına rağmen elim bir türlü gitmemiştir. Erken rastlamaktan belki. Bazı kitaplara, bazı insanlara rastladığımız dönemler önemli. Neyse… Yıllar sonra bu defa grafik roman uyarlaması duyuruldu. Uyarlama alerjisi ve şok edici etiket fiyatına rağmen bir noktada aldım. Fiyat da diğer yayıncılarla ısıtılan kurbağa misali bizi alıştırmaya doğru gidiyor gerçi :)
Özgün eseri bilenlerin hatırlayabileceği gibi kitap Sofie’nin merak ve düşünceleri üzerinden felsefe tarihi ve ekollerine bir yolculuğa davet ediyor okuru. Uyarlama başarılı hissettiriyor (hissettiriyor dedim çünkü kitabı bilmiyorum). Metne boğulmamış. Görseller güzel kullanılmış. Fakat kitabın çıktığı dönemde bu kadar gündemde olmadığını “tahmin ettiğim” bazı gündemler, politik doğrucu jargonlar hikayeye yedirilmiş. Seven olur sevmeyen olur ama müellifin de rızasıyla bir aktüelleştirme çabası fikir olarak ilginç. Hatta bir nokta #deadpool vari bir duvar kırma var ki, kitapta da benzeri var mı merak ettim. Devam cildi de okumak istiyorum.
Bu ara performansım düştü ama özgün kitabı da kısa vadede okuma arzusuyla bitiriyorum.
Kitap felsefe, tarih, din, mitoloji alanlarında meraklı (uzman değil meraklı) okura çok uygun. Gerçi bilinç sahibi her #homosapiens “anlam arayışında” olduğundan kime uygun değil diyebiliriz ki?

? Ik had al diverse keren deze leuke graphic novel bij mijn bieb geleend, maar nog nooit helemaal uitgelezen tot nu toe.
🤔Naast de Griekse filosofen uit de oudheid ook veel andere interessante stukje over niet alleen filosofie maar ook religie en geschiedenis dus. Soms gingen mij wat dingen te ver zoals wel vaker als ik boeken over filosofie lees, maar het meeste was interessant en ik zal onthouden dat de term antisemieten voortkomt uit de bijbel en verwijst naar Sem. Er waren nog veel meer interessante stukjes zoals dat de naam Sofie verwijst naar wijsheid, maar dat kwam mij weer wel bekend voor ;-)
=>Deel 2 heb ik al in huis, maar gaat weer even duren.

Yaaa, menurutku ini bacaan yang pas sih buat yang nggak bisa namatin Dunia Sophie versi aslinya. Dan karena divisualisasikan, jadinya nggak seberapa pusing ya buat ngebayangin maksudnya lewat contoh-contohnya.
Ini jadi "pengantar" filsafat yang cukup sih. Cocok dibaca pas lagi santai juga.
Tapi di sisi lain, aku ngerasa beberapa penjelasannya terlalu disederhanakan dan lebih difokuskan ke filsuf-filsuf populer ya. Ada sih beberapa filsuf lain yang sekadar "dihadirkan" di satu panel aja.
Dan aku baru ngeh ternyata novel grafis ini dibagi jadi 2 volume. Jadi yang di volume ini cuma sampai zaman Barok aja.
Oh iya ternyata format novel grafis ini ngikutin format novel grafis aslinya yang dari Prancis, jadi daftar isinya ditaruh di halaman terakhir di buku ini. Agak unik ya.
Terus ada beberapa halaman kosong yang dimaksudkan buat jeda sebelum beralih ke cerita lain. Ya jadi penanda kalau antar periode filsafat yang didiskusikan Sophie sama Alberto itu nggak dilakukan di waktu yang langsung berdekatan banget gitu.
Untuk style gambarnya sendiri entah kenapa agak ngingetin sama Sapiens Grafis sih.

Na twee zomers geleden De Wereld van Sofie gelezen te hebben, kreeg ik laatst de stripboek versie cadeau. Het stripboek verschilt iets van hoe ik me het oorspronkelijke boek herinner. Maar de basis is wel hetzelfde. Het stripboek is wellicht iets beter te volgen. Het is leuk dat er ook een detective kant in het boek (strip+oorspronkelijke boek) zit.

Volume 1 of this graphic novel successfully carries the torch of the 1996 YA book into the next generation. The magic, creativity and wonder that I encountered as a young person are all there, with plenty of plot and storytelling revisions that fit this format and update Sophie into the 2020s.
I was hoping to see one revision that I did not. As in many introductory philosophy works, women are almost completely absent from the list of influential philosophers. Gaarder explains this away by claiming that women philosophers simply did not exist in antiquity, which Sophie rightly rages against.
Of course, this claim simply is not true. In the most frustrating example of this assertion, the plot walks right into Neoplatonism and the advent of Christianity, and never acknowledges the existence of Hypatia, Sosipatra, or Macrina.
I am glad Gaardner addresses the elephant in the room that is the absence of extant primary philosophical works written by women in antiquity. However, the twice-offered explanation that they didn't exist at all because of male under-appreciation of their talents perpetuates the pattern of revisionist history that ignores, appropriates, or actively represses the contributions of women.

Είναι καταπληκτικό πώς οι σύνθετες φιλοσοφικές σκέψεις λειτουργούν τόσο καλά σε comic. Έχετε σκεφτεί καλύτερο τρόπο να μιλήσεις για τον Δημόκριτο και τη θεωρία του για τα άτομα από το να το κάνεις με… Lego; Ε, οι δημιουργοί το σκέφτηκαν. Και αν στο βιβλίο η μετακειμενικότητα είναι κάτι που εντυπωσιάζει, στο comic λειτουργεί ακόμη καλύτερα, πιο εντυπωσιακά, πιο κωμικά και πιο.. φιλοσοφικά.

Wauw, mooi gedaan dit! Deze stripversie van De wereld van Sophie leert je opnieuw van alles over filosofie en maakt tegelijk knap gebruik van het medium door letterlijk buiten de kaders van de tekeningen te werken. Ben benieuwd naar deel 2.

Karena filsafat dianggap sebagai ilmu yang menakutkan, rumit, dan terbilang berat untuk dipelajari. Dunia Sophie bisa dikatakan membawa sebuah cerita baru bagi orang-orang yang ingin mendalami filsafat dengan cara yang sederhana dan ringan.

Nice Adaptierung (Adaptation?) des Buches als Graphic Novel mit ein paar Veränderungen die ich mochte, auch wenn die emotionalen Stellen nicht ganz so gefühlvoll rüberkommen wie in meiner Erinnerung vom Original, aber vllt muss ich das auch einfach nochmal lesen :)

Hace mucho que leí la novela El Mundo de Sofía... la historia de la filosofía contada como nunca antes!! Esta novela gráfica me ha sorprendido muchísimo, ya que logra modernizar la historia y situarla en nuestra sociedad actual. Aunque el libro original tiene casi veinte años de diferencia, aquí ya aparecen móviles y otros detalles contemporáneos, lo que hace que nos identifiquemos muy bien con Sofía y con todo lo que le ocurre.
Me encanta cómo, al ser una novela gráfica, consigue traducir ideas filosóficas abstractas a imágenes sin perder profundidad. Y lo hace realmente bien. Estoy deseando ver qué tal la segunda parte, pero esta primera entrega me ha entusiasmado. 🤔💭

Interessant, mooi beeldend weggezet. Ik wilde het boek al erg lang lezen en ben blij dat deze versie op mijn pad is gekomen. Nu direct door met deel 2.

I've long been curious about the "real" book that this graphic book is based on. Since I can read this sort of thing much faster, I'm glad to have found it. This is mostly about early philosophers, with only a little of the "meta-fictional" bits. But the ending hints that will become a bigger part of volume 2. Looking forward to that even though this by itself was underwhelming.

Li o livro original de Jostein Gaarder há bastante tempo... Daquilo que recordo, acho que esta adaptação está bem conseguida.
Preocupações actuais, como o aquecimento global e o papel da mulher numa sociedade patriarcalista não estavam no original, penso... Mas nada se perde por esse acrescento, antes pelo contrário.

Good overview - very contemporary. It's funny too. And feminist. Some areas (more about Diogenes for example) I was sorry that were left out, but this is a general philosophy book and it's YA, so it's not supposed to be comprehensive. Great illustrations.

Die Romanvorlage zu dieser Graphic Novel ist mir noch immer sehr gut in Erinnerung. Das Mammutwerk des norwegischen Autors Jostein Garder hat mich zum ersten Mal mit der Geschichte der Philosophie in Verbindung gebracht. Nach 30 Jahren ist es Zeit für eine Auffrischung der besonderen Art.
Sofie bekommt mysteriöse Briefe. Die Fragen „Wer bist du?“ und „Woher kommt die Welt?“ lösen eine bildhafte Reise von den Anfängen der Philosophie bis in die Gegenwart aus. Die Romanvorlage wurde frei interpretiert. Wir begegnen auch hier Aristoteles, Thomas von Aquin, Kant und Nietzsche. Machen uns mit ihren Ideen vertraut und begleiten Sie ein Stück ihres Lebens. Genau so sind wir an der Seite von Sofie, die den geheimnisvollen Briefe Schreiber sucht und am Ende des ersten Teils eine skurrile Entdeckung macht
Mich hat das Buch nicht nur wieder von seiner inhaltlichen Idee begeistert, sondern auch die Transformierung in die heutige Gegenwart ist richtig gut gelungen. Das Mädchen ist ein Teenager der 2020er Jahre mit all seinen Problemen. Sie kämpft vor den den Philosophen für mehr Feminismus Feminismus, setzt sich für eine bessere Umwelt und lebt im digitalen Zeitalter. Dabei wirkt es nicht Geschichts verändern. Die Autoren haben den Plot verjüngt und für Jugendliche und Erwachsene der Gegenwart gut lesbar gemacht. Die Zeichnungen sind farbenfroh und detailreich. Man spart nicht mit Ironie und Humor, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Eine große Lese Empfehlung für alle, die ihr philosophisches Wissen noch mal auffrischen möchten und den Roman neu beweisen wollen.

El Mundo de Sofia es una libro para conocer la evolución de la filosofía a través del tiempo, desde sus orígenes, los primeros filosofos hasta la actualidad. El hombre siempre ha buscando respuestas a muchas preguntas como: ¿quien soy? ¿Cuál es mi papel en el mundo? ¿Qué o quién gobierna todo? Y siempre se ha apoyado en las teorías y corrientes filosóficas para encontrar un sentido a la existencia. Este libro en particular es el primero tomo del comic, que busca de una manera muy visual y divertida llevar la misma trama y enseñanzas que la obra original, convirtiendo a la historia de la filosofía en una experiencia muy amena y de fácil acceso a los principales filósofos y sus ideas más relevantes.

Les dessins étaient jolies
L’histoire est intéressant mais parfois le texte est écrit en trop petit c’est très énervant à lire
On apprend plein de truc philosophique mais pas trop pour que ça deviennent énervant ou ennuyant
