I read a few health-related books every year and many of them focus on foods. Gut health and its impact on our overall well being is a topic of high recent interest. This book does a good job of providing a systematic approach to better eating to improve gut health.

What we eat majorly influences our health, far more than we think. There is a growing convergence in this and other recent health books that the explosion of diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Alzheimer’s, and even some Cancers & Autoimmune conditions is attributable to diet & lifestyle – processed food, high sugar intake, nutritional imbalance, poor sleep & lack of exercise. Many take up short term measures, often for weight loss, such as the Keto diet but find long term sustenance tough. As the author quips, maybe we should refer to “lifestyle medicine” for people to take diet and other long term lifestyle changes more seriously.

The author advocates a 90/10 reset program which after an initial strict regimen allows you to loosen up a little on the diet. The first 3 weeks are focused on a remove, replace, re-inoculate, and repair program for the gut. Many foods we eat are Inflammatory and cause issues in the longer term. So, in the initial period, some will find a lot of what generally comprises modern day eating is out – meat, dairy, processed food, sugar, nuts, grains, and even caffeine. The first 3-week diet is largely centred around vegetables, fruits and rice. After the 3 weeks, you enter a maintenance phase and can include nuts, grains and a limited amount of the other stuff (maximum 10% leeway) though processed food, meat and sugars are best avoided as much as possible. The advice on moving to a plant-based diet is in line with many other recent books. Strongly entrenched industry lobbies (sugar, processed foods, meat) and clever marketing have ensured change is slow. But with increased awareness, I see the sugar industry reaching a tipping point in 10-15 years, and the meat industry in 15-20 years.

The last 40% of the book has a long list of recipes. Through the book, there is detailed information on foods, including with recommended brand names. However, the brands, as also the recipes are entirely US focussed. That said, with the broad principles in mind, it is not too difficult to work out good foods & associated preparation methods.

I am sure the advice in this book will work. Other good books I recommend are How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease, Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power and Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet (especially if you can grow your own food).

My rating: 4.25 / 5.

Ellen Postolowski's Gut Driven: Jump-Start Digestive Health to Nourish Body, Mind, and Spirit is a fascinating read. Filled with information, Postolowski explains all the things which can contribute to wreaking havoc on our digestive systems. Don’t worry, there’s also detailed information to help fix it all.

I know a bit about gut health because several members of my family suffer and have been helped by special diets. Hoping for some creative recipes, I think I can tailor several of the ones included in Gut Driven.

I would 100% recommend this book to folks looking to find out more about how diet affects their body’s health. There’s a ton of helpful info here.

thank you to Frankie Mahwah Publishing via NetGalley for providing an arc copy of Gut Driven for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own

Gut Driven is an extremely meaningful read. It addresses major gut issues that may be causing everyday distress while offering simple remedies that can be incorporated into any lifestyle or schedule. I particularly appreciated the scientific explanation of what certain food items are doing to our bodies and reasons why we may not be feeling our best. The most important take-away for me is that I now have the knowledge to ward of potential ailments and not fall into the trap of becoming a routine pill popper. While it is important to understand that certain situations justify prescribed medications, it is enlightening to learn that there are other avenues worth exploring. Gut Driven paves those avenues with science-based evidence, suggested recipes and the liberty to apply what may work best for you regarding your health goals. What makes Gut Driven attractive is that it does not suggest an all or nothing approach, minor changes are encouraged and celebrated. Ellen Postolowski gives her readers the know-how and the confidence to live their best life.

I picked up the original Gut book that everyone usually talks about a couple of years earlier at an airport. The first problem that I encountered in that book was that the author first began by talking about how hereditary eating habits ensure the makeup of a gut and how changing your diet for whatever reason might be harmful overall. She follows that up with an example of switching to a vegetarian diet. Given that my hereditary gut, for at least four generations (longer, I can presume, but this I can confirm), has been vegetarian, I found it off-putting, and I ended up not finishing the book, although a lonely little bookmark still sits in it.
This book is different from the beginning. It might lean more into a plant-based diet than some people may prefer, but she does not neglect to include those people who want to continue to eat their regular diet. She lets them know when and how it can be injected back once they have completed the reset.
The author talks in general about gut health, and given that she has personally used this to help herself, it is an effective tool in helping anyone interested.
The reset is a simple process (to some extent), but one that needs to be followed properly. The author splits the content and instructions into digestible parts (I had to attempt the pun), making it a perfect book for anyone who has contemplated looking into manipulating their gut and trying something new. There are a lot of recipes included with tips to make the process easier and sustainable.
I already recommended it to a couple of people and might even buy a hard copy for next year.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

I was hooked as soon as Gut Driven was put into my path. I developed an interest in the Reset 90/10 program from word of mouth of Ellen's knowledge and guidance on positive, sustainable change. Her mindset, dedication, and philosophy of working with the whole-body mentality piqued my interest. I wanted in. The word "diet" was not something I wanted to torment over any longer. Gut Driven wholeheartedly pulls away from that mindset with empathetic support, science, and food that tastes good. In the last several years, chronic stomach bloating, gas, irritability, anxiety, sleepless nights, and inflammation controlled how my day would unfold.

The Gut Driven guide helped keep goals manageable. I've gained a new awareness of the benefits of plant-based foods for me, specifically.

This journey started five weeks ago, and I never looked back. With the Reset program, my fears of food elimination quickly subsided as the routine got much easier with the sample menus, planning guides, and tips! Plus, I felt so good, and when I derailed, I quickly got back on track because I was learning what worked for me. Since completing the Reset 90/10 program, this newly attainable lifestyle is here to stay since I am more mindful of progress, not perfection. This is my favorite takeaway, as my strengthened definition of healthy has taken on a whole new meaning.

The bloating, gas, irritability, and sleepless nights are in the past. The anxiety is also completely gone, as is the inflammation. Workouts have become smooth and effortless as the joint pain that held me back no longer exists. All-in-all, this is a guide I would recommend!

For many years, I’ve struggled with gut issues, fatigue and chronic pain. Up until recently when I started Reset 90/10.

Through reading this very interesting journey of the author, I felt as though she understood my issues and presented other avenues other than just prescribing yet another medication.

Supportive measures other than food, how I'm feeling, what’s working and what’s not. I now know how to read labels, make my own meals and still understand the food we’re eating is so important to our health. Did it take time to acclimate? Yes, but quality time well spent!

I now know what I’m sensitive to, what I should be eating and what to avoid. For two months now, I'm sticking to all kinds of better habits, and I can proudly say I will be from now on. My maintenance is always different as Ellen states, "this is always a journey." Whether that is 90/10 some weeks, 80/20 or even 60/40. I have a safety net now and feel good about my choices.

This program did not only help with my gut, but it has increased my energy and positivity. I can now look forward to my days knowing I’m in a better place with my health and overall well-being. I look forward to cooking my meals and grocery shopping. It’s crazy 😅Thank you so much!!!!! It’s such a simple concept that everyone should follow. What we put in our bodies should be NATURAL. I’m finally saying goodbye to processed foods, medications, constipation, and fatigue. I embrace everything from Gut Driven and the Reset 90/10 program. Focusing on my body and mind and spirit.

I feel great after following the Reset program in this book! I decided to try the three-week program as a New Year’s resolution. I was looking for something that was vegan and would give my digestion a break after the holidays. I couldn’t be happier with the results! I lost weight, my stomach is flatter, I have more energy, and I learned some new delicious recipes.

I liked that the author gave a rough outline to follow—it's not a rigid diet. So, within the allowable foods I could pick and choose. It was incredibly helpful to have food prep tips, shopping lists, and cheat sheets, like using frozen riced sweet potatoes to make a yummy grain-free fried rice. Who knew?

Thankfully I don't have digestion problems, but if you do, this book is a great resource, because in addition to dozens of recipes (for during Reset and then afterward) there is a lot of good information about digestion-related issues, from celiac disease to menopause (yes, hormones can impact your gut health!). So this is not just a cookbook or a trending diet. It’s a practical, proven map for how to heal your gut if it’s not happy and then how to keep it healthy when inevitable changes happen.

Gut Driven is a very interesting book. There is so much that most people don't know about the gut and microbiome in regards to health and how to heal your body and it is an area largely ignored by most doctors. Our body is what we eat and all body functions are affected by the gut.
I found the 90/10 plan to be extremely challenging the three week restriction phase is extremely restrictive, and I couldn’t commit to that 100% and I’d say my 10% was more like 40% but I still noticed improvements and although you don't have to be perfect all the time I’m far from on the program but as I slowly make changes and focus on more plant based foods, whole grains, and unprocessed foods in my diet I am seeing heath benefits and changes in my body that are helping me to continue down this path. Packed full of information and very strict but beneficial. If you want to improve gut health this book is filled with excellent information to help you achieve your goals.

This was a very interesting book. I am very drawn to books especially regarding gut health, as it seems to be an emerging area of interest. There is so much we don't know about the gut and microbiome, and it seems to be an area of huge growth potential. So many systems and body functions are affected by the gut.
I found the 90/10 plan to be very challenging in my own personal life. With young children, it just doesn't seem like a great time to endeavor to take it on. The three week restriction phase is VERY restrictive, and I just cannot commit to that at this point. I do like that she includes the 10% so you don't have to be perfect at all times. I definitely plan to focus on more plant based foods, whole grains, and unprocessed foods in my everyday diet.
Thanks to Netgalley for the book to review.

Highly Recommend this book… I was excited to read Gut Driven by Chef Ellen Postolowski. Having dealt with gut issues most of my life I was eager to gain more depth and insight to treating gut issues. This book provided so much more than a method to maintain a healthy gut. Ellen provides ways for a full transformation mind, body and soul. The information and easy reading that she provides in this book is a game changer. As a former client, I have personal experience going through the Reset 90/10 and learned so much at that time, but this read provided even more knowledge and deeper layers. It does take dedication, but this method is forgiving and worth it. The eye opening information that Ellen is sharing to help educate on how to have and maintain a healthy gut and lifestyle is worth the read. Not to mention all of her amazing and easy recipes that she provides as well!

Gut Driven
Author: Ellen Postolowski
⭐️⭐️⭐️

This would be a great book for anyone beginning to learn about gut health and basic wellness plans. However, if you are fairly knowledgeable about the gut microbiome and nutrition this book doesn't provide anything new and the meal plan is a pretty basic elimination diet. Some of the recipes did sound like they would be tasty so I will be trying them out. There were quite a few typos and odd formatting in the digital copy which got a bit distracting but I'm assuming that will be corrected in the final book. Overall, I found this to be something that would be helpful to those starting on the path to better gut health.

Thanks to NetGalley, Frankie Mahwah Publishing, and Ellen Postolowski for an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I have struggled with gut health my whole life, and have tried countless diets, lifestyle changes, spoken to doctors and holistic coaches, but the perspective that Ellen provides in this book is unmatched. There is so much to learn in Gut Driven. It encouraged me to take a deep look into my way of living and the choices I make regarding food choices in my daily life. I gained so much important knowledge about food science and love Ellen’s mantra- “you are what you can digest”. Her recipes put an exciting and tasty spin on super clean eating, which can tend to get a negative connotation nowadays. While the Reset is a true challenge, the benefits are undeniable! Highly recommend this book for anyone looking to feel better from the inside out!

Gut driven is a must read for everyone. In this day and age of global-body inflammation, Ms. Postolowski connects the dots on the science , emotional connections we have with food and the inner destruction happening in our bodies . In addition the abundant of amazing recipes packed in this book.

I am a chiropractor that deals in the world of pain and symptoms everyday. Most every symptom I deal with has an inflammatory component driven by the foods we put in our bodies.

When our bodies are inflamed , pain is expressed at a higher level. It’s that simple.

Thank you Ellen for your easy to read and understand work of art!!!

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/

Quite a few books have come out recently on the importance of our gut microbiome (most notably, Fiber Fueled by Will Bulsiewicz) and changing your diet to fix directional issues. Most are about lifestyle changes while this book focuses on a temporary fix: an elimination system over three weeks to determine what is causing your issues. The author does a good job of setting it all up for you: explaining the issues, how the plan will work, how to stick to the plan, and how to address confounders such as stress and support systems.

The book is broken down into four sections: the foundation of gut health, the 90/10 reset program, going into maintenance mode after the three weeks, and then the recipes. As well, there are additions in the back including charts for your reset program, lists of good and bad foods, suggestions for the program, symptoms and food tracker, notes, and of course resources.

The basis of the program is to be 90% compliant and have 10% wiggle room. Over the three week period, you have a heavy elimination of animal products (milks, eggs, meat) and plants that are problematic (such as tomatoes or skins of apples). The three weeks focus on these four topics : remove, replace, reinoculate, and repair. Week one is about detox, week two is the honeym0on stage, and week three is the transformation stage. After that, the author lays out how to evaluate how the weeks went, what was discovered, and whether you would want to stay in the program an extra week or go straight to the maintenance recipes/stage.

There are pages and pages of recipes for each stage. It is important to note that this isn't a diet and it isn't about losing weight. Instead, the focus is on identifying which food items are causing problems. Yes, it is mostly plant-based in the beginning stages as a result.

The author is friendly and keeps it light throughout. The plan is fairly easy to follow though if you have a family, you'll have to figure out how to avoid the temptations from the foods in the pantry that they want to eat. But this is only three weeks so it isn't a terribly long investment of time to learn more about your own body.

In all, nicely written and laid out. Friendly and informative - the author takes pains to cover all aspects of digestion health. This is definitely not about weight loss or healthier eating (though since the 3 weeks are mostly plant based, it is rather healthy by nature). Other topics affecting the gut such as stress, companionship, chemicals, etc. are also discussed briefly. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Gut Driven is a *must-read* for anyone wanting to end digestion discomfort! I wish I’d had this book a decade ago. It would have saved me lots of doctor’s visits, time researching what was potentially wrong with me, and the frustration of living with constant bloating, leaky gut, irregular elimination, low iron, energy crashes, and a host of other ailments!

The program in this book put me on a safe, doable, and worry-free eating journey absent of all inflammatory foods for three weeks, giving my gut time to heal. Yes, it required planning, cooking, and being open to new foods, but afterward, I felt amazing. The bloating and discomfort totally went away! Best of all, I had more energy, fewer mood swings (because the gut-brain connection is real!), and even lost a couple pounds! It’s super clear to me now that being in a constant state of inflammation meant that I was not getting the vitamins and minerals from my foods that I needed. Now I am.

I appreciated the advice for how to slowly introduce harder-to-digest foods, because this can be a struggle and is different for every body. My favorite part, though, was the recipes, along with the helpful prep and shopping tips. But the most important part for me was the well-researched information that helped me *understand* what is happening in my body and why—at a cellular level.

I highly recommend Gut Driven and hope it brings you healing like it did for me!

This book seamlessly weaves together science, personal anecdotes, and practical advice to illuminate the profound impact of gut health on our overall well-being. Postolowski's approach is refreshingly accessible, making complex digestive concepts easy to grasp. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on nourishing not just the body but also the mind and spirit. The author's insights into the gut-brain connection are enlightening, and the actionable tips for optimizing digestion have been transformative in my daily life. This is not just a book; it's a roadmap to cultivating a holistic and vibrant life. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a comprehensive guide to jump-starting their digestive health.

Nowadays, we tend to live in a chaotic and hurried world where the vortex of routine makes us neglect our health for several reasons, but mainly the lack of time.
The book gave me the strength to reorganize my life in two main aspects: nutrition and physical activity. What I adore about this title is the experience that this talented author makes available to the reader.
I found it indispensable that page after page, natural medicines such as lemon are included to find a balance between bodily functions.
The narrative is absolutely easy to follow and engaging which is fundamental when we talk about a theoretical book in order not to fall into boredom.

This book is all about equipping you with the tools to take charge of your well-being and redefine your own definition of "healthy." I really loved that the author encourages readers to adjust the program to each of our specific needs, recognizing that everyone’s bodies are different and that it’s important to do what we feel is best for ourselves. I appreciated that the book was well organized and split into different parts. Part one focuses on the gut-brain connection, inflammation, stress, and the idea of Reset 90/10, while Part two guides you through a three-week Reset program. Part three teaches you how to reintroduce foods safely and establish a personalized eating regimen, and Part four includes reset and maintenance recipes. This book gave me power over my gut health, and helped me be more in tune with what my body needs. All in all, this book was truly amazing, providing a practical and comprehensive strategy for living a better life through a healthy diet, and enjoying it!
