I was given this book as a Christmas present by a relative. Thanks, Beth.

The book is a broad and I suspect surface overview of Buddhism, which suits me fine.

I am not a believer or follower of any organised religious Godly faith, but I am very spiritual in feeling at one with this planet of ours and the universe of which it is but a tiny speck. With the awareness of our minute size in this great enormity, I think, comes not an acceptance of smallness and insignificance, but taking the time to contemplate, or meditating over the fact, can instil a sense of our own individual worth and place within it. So, although I would never want to tick box and assign myself to any named religion, this comes closest. Many of its suggestions are things I have done without thinking since childhood.

From what I gather here, much of what comes under the Buddhist belief seems, to me, common sense. A prime directive, as spoken by Zen monk, Daolin, is “Do not what is evil, do what is good, and purify one’s own mind.” Seeing disappointment in a listeners face on hearing such a simplistic message, he added, “This may be something that even a three-year-old child knows, but it is also something that even an eighty-year-old man cannot put into practice.”

Harmony is a key word in the text that comes up often. Again, there seems much which is common sense - talk of controlling anger, switching the TV off if it is not being watched and using the time more productively, and emphasis on the powers of listening to the sounds of water etc. On page 49 the writer says, “Please cherish the places where you feel a deep sense of harmony. They are not just places to relax, but also places where you feel so free that you’re able to be your true self. They are an irreplaceable treasure.” This, and his writing on the benefits of walking echo many of my own thoughts, and which I reference all too often in my reviews, as well as my profile!

I liked the point made on page 85, because of its honesty. A disciple asked Buddha various questions such as - Do people exist after death? To which the Buddha’s reply was, that he didn’t reply. 'The answer to a question that cannot be known is meaningless, no matter how much you think about it. Losing your head over those questions is not just pointless but can be damaging.'

On page 106, I like, ‘…treat the Buddha as just another person whose advice you should not accept unquestioningly. Instead, lead your life by thinking for yourself and following the Dharma, the universal teachings of Buddhism.’

And near the end of the book (page 165):-

Rather than looking to oppose, Buddhism heads towards harmony. It doesn’t go about making strong claims that it has the correct way of thinking; instead I like the way it demystifies its essence as ‘nothing more than following the laws of nature, the natural order of things.’

And another quote (page 170) which I can honestly say doesn’t apply to me, but made me laugh as I’ve seen it in the workplace, as well as the general world (and perhaps addiction to social media):-

…there’s the most basic form of confusion, which comes from not realizing that you were lost to begin with.

Everyone else is running, so you run with them in the same direction. You run with all your heart because you’re worried that if you stop you’ll get left behind. You don’t know your destination or your current location. However, you don’t have time to look back to see where you’ve been, so you just keep running.

The competition continues to accelerate, and so, too, does the confusion. The busier we are, the deeper the confusion.


Talking to the Buddha, chanting, following pre-set walking paths and visiting a set number of pilgrimage sites in a fixed period of time (completed by some Buddhist monks), or having a small shrine in the house is not for me. Overall, I believe the teachings of the Buddha have much to offer. And even though Buddhism appears to be the least pontificating and finger-pointing of religions, I prefer to be inspired by the thoughts and written words, rather than set meditative text or routine.

This is not a book if you’re looking for a history or great detail on the subject. I enjoyed reading it. It gave me a broad outline in clear words. It doesn't go into great detail over things like the non-drinking of alcohol (counts me out as a monk!), materialism, and suffering, which I know to be key elements of Buddhism. I like that the author is aware of his own imperfections and that not everything contained within is for everyone, or possible for everyone. It’s not a sermon spoken from on high. You can take from it what you will - which seems an appealing element of Buddhism. If you’re looking for a mechanical self-help 1, 2, 3 – do this/do that to make your life all hunky-dory, this book is not for you.

The softback is beautifully produced and decorated; many of the Oriental watercolour images of nature and the landscape - which make up the page backgrounds - would themselves make for a tremendous and inspirational book of art.

At first I was perplexed by the lack of “how to” in this book. The author presented concepts but then didn’t present tidy lists of steps to take to implement them. That’s when I realized that the beauty of the book lies in just that. Buddhism isn’t summed up in simple checklists, it’s self-examination, reflection and inquiry. The depth of this book lies in its very simplicity. Once I realized that I knew it would be one I revisit again and again as a sort of reference book on how to live well. It will be a helpful resource as I seek to implement the concepts he’s introduced and the experience will be all the richer bc I’ll have to do all the work of it myself instead of being passively spoonfed- which, though it would make me feel enlightened and appear productive, would actually result in a hollow, non-transformative experience.

Interesting, but highly repetitive remarks. The structure of the book is upside down. The illustrations accompanying the text are beautiful, but do not compensate for the extreme boredom that I felt. There is a panoply of Buddhist authors who will succeed in mobilizing the same concepts while making it interesting.

Este não é um género que leia habitualmente mas até tinha ficado curiosa pois a capa menciona que o livro tem "Receitas budistas para reduzir o ruído dentro da sua cabeça" e, confesso, ando a passar por uma fase com muito stress e achei que poderia ajudar.
No entanto, senti que os conselhos eram muito vagos e não o autor não nos dava dicas concretas, com passos que deveríamos seguir, para conseguirmos "limpar a nossa mente".
Esteticamente o livro está muito bem conseguido, com ilustrações tipo aguarela, em várias páginas.

Cartea aceasta a început destul de bine. M-am regăsit în toate lucrurile menționate și chiar am găsit câteva lucruri interesante.

Dar, pe parcurs, lucrurile au mers intr-o altă direcție și s-a pus accent pe istorie și pe filosofii. M-a pierdut undeva de la jumătate.

Mi-au plăcut mult detaliile inserate în carte, acele mici desenuțe sau pagini colorate.

Okay, so this is one of those ‘self help’ books that tells you what to do in an extremely dry manner but does not tell you how to do it. They say, Quiet your mind. Have self control. Be lighter! That’s great, we already know that. Thank you for your assistance! 🙄 People know what they *should* be doing; they bought the book to help them achieve it! Personally, despite the beautiful illustrations, I found this book repetitive, dry, and essentially pointless. Perhaps it would be useful for someone who had not considered these subjects before. A person who is not self-aware? Unfortunately, the utter boredom this book induced held me back from finishing it, and each point could have been summarised in a sentence or two.

Matsumoto beschrijft drie bronnen van ons lijden, volgens het Boeddhisme:
- Raga: hebzucht en gehechtheid;
- Dvesha: woede en razernij;
- Moha: waanideeën en zelfverlies door drift en begeerte.

Lawaai is om ons heen en in ons. Aan geluid om ons heen kunnen we niet ontkomen - we kunnen wel onze manier van luisteren aanpassen. Wíj vinden geluid lawaai of niet, die interpretatie zit in ons.

Rust creëren volgens het boeddhisme:
- Tv uitzetten en dingen doen waarop je je kunt concentreren;
- Bewust en diep ademen;
- Ontsnappen aan de drukte: een tempel, je huis, natuur;
- Wandelen;
- Schrijven;
- Geen van deze zonden begaan: doden van andere levende wezens; liegen, lasteren, vleien; oneerbare gedachten en boos worden;
- Negeer je emoties niet, kom ze onderogen en ga op zoek naar de oorzaak;
- Lezen van soetra’s (liefdevolle lessen van de Boeddha);
- Ochtendrituelen;
- Schoonmaken.

Oefenen van de geest:
- Toon dankbaarheid voor eten;
- Onderzoek niet alle optie van het moderne leven en weer dankbaar voor de opties die je benut, anders krijgt de informatieoverflow ons in de greep;
- Blijf weg bij kwade bedoelingen op het internet;
- Onze geest is snel afgeleid. Ste geen ‘wat als’-vragen, maar ‘wat nu’-vragen;
- Leer van je fouten, geef niet anderen de schuld;
- Erken je verlangens; ontkennen werk niet;

Loslaten:
- Geld. En jezelf met anderen vergelijken op basis van geld maakt ongelukkig. Vrij zijn van het verlangen naar geld is onbetaalbaar;
- Vergelijk jezelf niet met anderen, maar met je vroegere en toekomstige zelf;
- Ken je vooroordelen en denk zelf na;
- Liefde kan een vorm van gehechtheid zijn die het boeddhisme afwijst. Liefde die op jezelf gericht is, is narcisme, een destructieve emotie. In veel gevallen is liefde op jezelf gericht: functioneel, het bevredigt een behoefte of vult een gat in je leven. Als vervolgens na een poosje blijkt dat de ander anders is dan je dacht, ben je teleurgesteld. Liefde die voortkomt uit een meelevend en barmhartig hart, vult ons leven, is niet narcistisch. Het boeddhisme zegt dat we onze metgezellen niet moeten beoordelen op genegenheid of afkeer, maar op met wie je kunt groeien en leren terwijl je elkaar aanmoedigt.
- Meestal gaat het leven anders dan je verwacht. Maak je niet afhankelijk van waar je geen controle over hebt. Accepteer wat er gebeurt, leer ervan en leef in hoop in plaats van in verwachting.

Doe geen kwaad, doe goed:
- Accepteer dat je niet perfect bent. Reken op tegenslag.
- Doe niet: liegen, dubbelhartigheid (verschillende dingen zeggen tegen verschillende mensen), kwaadsprekerij, kletspraat (vleierij, loze woorden, opgesmukte taal).
- Beledigen
- Klagen. Beter is om dankbaar te zijn.

Bewandel je eigen pad:
- Vermijd uitersten, kies de middenweg tussen zelfontzegging en genotzucht. De uitersten zijn gemakkelijker dan de middenweg;
- Blijf kalm, ook bij tegenslag;
- Denk voor jezelf en leer;
- Voel met je hele lichaam;
- Creëer harmonie voor d toekomst en niet alleen voor het heden. Als je een beslissing miet nemen, stel jezelf dan de vraag welke beslissing tot de meeste harmonie leidt;
- Niet alleen wereldlijk succes najagen maar ook geestelijke ontwikkeling. Wanneer we de geest ontwikkelen, merken we onze verwardheid op.

Verwarringen:
- niet weten waar je naar toe wilt gaan;
- Niet weten waar je bent
- Je was bij vertrek al verward. Je rent gewoon met de meute mee.

Antwoord op de verwarring: langzamer leven en je verbonden voelen met alles en iedereen.

“Uma Mente Tranquila” de Shoukei Matsumoto é um livro agradável e de leitura simples, que oferece uma introdução aos princípios budistas e uma visão geral de como integrá-los no dia a dia. É especialmente indicado para quem procura um primeiro contacto com esta filosofia de vida.

Apesar de ser um bom ponto de partida, senti que faltou profundidade em algumas partes. O autor orienta sobre o que fazer para alcançar uma mente mais tranquila, mas pouco desenvolve sobre o como aplicar esses ensinamentos na prática. Além disso, senti que algumas ideias acabam por ser repetitivas.

No entanto, a escrita é acessível e o tom do autor é acolhedor, o que contribui para uma experiência global positiva. Recomendo este livro como uma introdução leve ao budismo, mas para quem deseja aprofundar-se no tema, talvez seja necessário complementá-lo com outras leituras.

This little book is easy to read and a good start for someone unfamiliar with Buddhism. It will give a general overview of living ethically from a Buddhist perspective and as a consequence provide the tools for a quieter mind and life.

Podemos pensar que nos ajudam a descarregar a tensão, mas na realidade só nos fazem sentir pior. É uma perda de tempo (...) O pensamento positivo não fará com que tudo corra como pretende. O esforço nem sempre é suficiente. A versão budista do pensamento positivo envolve manter a calma na adversidade, levantarmo-nos do chão e recomeçar a andar. Este livro é para manter na cabeceira da cama e ir lendo e relendo. É uma agradável leitura que para mim funcionou como meditação! Muitas das dicas para acalmar a mente são já antigas conhecidas, no entanto a perspectiva com que são apresentadas fazem-nos refletir novamente sobre elas. Recomendo vivamente! Não será o livro que te irá mudar a vida, mas lê-lo trará alguma paz às inquietações que todos nós temos.

What a wonderful book to start a new year with!

This book looks at the endless noise that surrounds us from phones, people, traffic, and television to the internal nises we face, worries, fears, destructive emotions, and racing thoughts. These fuel stress and anxiety and can be harmful to our physical and mental health, which distracts us from living fulfilling and peaceful lives.

I took useful tips and new thoughts from many pages in this book, Matsumoto uses teachings of Buddism to look at the way we live to our relationships with others, money, and technology.
He focuses on the benefits of turning our consciousness inwards and with a new awareness shows us how to quiet your mind.

The chapters I found most useful were the ones about avoiding comparing ourselves to others and living by our own rules.

It is a brilliant book to help calm the mind in a chaotic world.

Easy Book to read. Easy to understand. Not too deep into Buddhistic matters. Makes you want to get to get a better grip on understanding more things about Buddhism on the other side. I find it a well-balanced book. Not too complicated. Simple like the mind of a monk. Other People rate this book low because they do not understand that this book will not bring you a formula that you can use to calm your mind, rather it has different ways to look at and to consider how to start changing things for yourself.

Concise and beautifully crafted guide that gently encourages readers to seek quiet amidst the relentless pace of modern life. It provides simple yet thoughtful insights, ideal for those newly exploring mindfulness and Buddhist philosophy. However, readers already familiar with Buddhist teachings may find little groundbreaking here, as the book tends to revisit common wisdom rather than introduce fresh perspectives.

Much like the book, I’ll keep this review simple. The book doesn’t go into much detail, and skims the surface on some very basic but good advice. The best part of the book was the zen little images scattered throughout the pages.

I wouldn’t recommend this to a friend for the fact that they would be insulted if I did with the assumption that I think they know nothing on the topic.

There were a few good points in this, but overall it left me feeling like the author felt as though he knew the answers to what was happening and presented as very matter of fact. It's not the worst thing if you're looking for direct answers but I didn't feel like I took away too much from reading this. I think other people might get more of out this book than I did.

A Quiet Mind did not have many useful insights, being repetitious of most of the other Buddhist/meditation books I have read. I liked his perception of noise not being labeled as such, but rather using the neutral term - sound. I was somewhat put off by his rigidity and demanding writing style and suggestions, which were exhorted as 'musts'.

I enjoyed it. It gave me a good and interesting insight into Buddhism. Also some useful tips for daily life; “acceptance” being the topic covered by the author that had a big impact and I like how the author changed my perspective on things from his description of the Buddhist concept of acceptance.

Don’t typically read this genre but it introduces a lot of good ways to sort out my chaotic thoughts. It also was very helpful for values and morals questions when you’re questioning yourself in difficult situations. Although I don’t practice, it was very interesting to learn about Buddhism, the journey some will go on, and those perspectives.

A short, beautifully made little book about finding ways to calm down and find quiet in the constant noise of today. Some good ideas, but anyone familiar with Buddhist philosophy will likely find little new.

A quick introduction on how Buddhism can calm the internal chaos of life. Concepts and ideas are presented in an easy to understand manner. If more people read practiced some of the ideas in this book, the world would be a calmer place. I loved the watercolor illustrations.

General reminders of Buddhist thought. Beautiful physical attributes of the book ( hard cover, glossy pages , photos and typography) made it as pleasing to read as the doctrines the author espouses. Nothing new but a good reminder. Wholesome.

Foi uma excelente leitura para limpar a mente e trazer alguns insights, por exemplo, focar na possibilidade do silêncio ainda que esteja no caos, mas senti falta de algum aprofundamento.
