Marvel Publishing, Inc., commonly referred to as Marvel Comics, is an American company that publishes comic books and related media. Marvel Entertainment, Inc., a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, owns Marvel Publishing (since 2009).
Marvel counts among its characters such well-known properties as Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, Wolverine, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Daredevil, Thor, the Sub-Mariner, the Punisher, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, and the Silver Surfer; antagonists such as Dr. Doom, the Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Venom, Magneto, Sabretooth, Galactus, the Red Skull, the Kingpin, and Bullseye; and others. Most of Marvel's fictional characters operate in a single reality known as the Marvel Universe, with locales set in real-life cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
The comic book arm of the company started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1961, with the company later that year launching Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. Marvel has since become the largest American comic book publisher, surpassing its longtime competitor DC Comics.
On December 31, 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4.24 billion. --from Wikipedia
Note:Although currently owned by the Walt Disney Company, this author is kept separate due to it's long history prior to it's acquisition - over 70 years.
This collection will be released on July 18, 2023. VIZ Media provided an early galley for review.
Having stepped away from the purchasing of monthly titles from the comic shop over a decade ago, I do not get to see much of the variant covers that show up more and more on comics. So, a lot of the artwork in this particular book was absolutely brand-new to me. The book is organized in four categories: Avengers, Spider-Man, X-Men, and then the rest of the Marvel Universe.
It was very cool to see these variant cover images from Marvel books done is the many styles of manga. Many are pin-up style and not dependent of the book's storyline. Some are in a very playful style while others are super-polished and poster-worthy. All of them are incredibly detailed and just fun to look at.
Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute is a terrific artwork tribute book. Viz Media and Marvel Comics did a fantastic job with this Tribute art book. This art book features Manga versions of popular Marvel Comics covers from the last few years and also pinups of popular characters, both heroes and villains.
The artwork in Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute is beautiful. The pinups are amazing interpretations of Marvel heroes and villains. Manga and Marvel Comics is an awesome combination. The Manga style of art works so well depicting action scenes from comics. I love the look of Marvel's heroes surrounded by Manga action lines. It's like a new modern version of the Kirby Krackle.
In Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute all of the artwork speaks for itself. The illustrations are lush, full of color, and lots of action lines. This wonderful book is a new type of Artist's Edition book where new artists put their spin on your favorite superheroes and villains.
I hope there will be a volume 2 of the Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute. I think many Marvel and Manga fans will buy it. I also think Viz Media should consider doing this type of Manga tribute book with DC characters. I think it would be another huge hit with fans!
If you enjoy Marvel Comics pinups, Manga, or just appreciate beautiful art then please pick up a copy of Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute. This book is worth buying and enjoying the amazing artwork.
You actually think Marvel is all about Stan Lee making comics? Think again coz not all comics are written & illustrated by Stan Lee. A lot of comic book artists works on their own stories involving Marvel characters not just in the US but in Japan too & I spent a short time reading Marvel Comics A Manga Tribute by VIZ Media
The illustrations from various maga artists like Akira Himekawa (The Legend Of Zelda) Hikaru Uesugi Tsutomu Nihei & Yu-Gi-Oh creator Kazuki Takahashi (04/10/1961 - 04/07/2022) are actually cool as it celebrates the characters across the Marvel Multiverse
& whether you're into Marvel or into iconic anime franchises influenced by Marvel like My Hero Academia Marvel Comics A Manga Tribute is a must read
Marvel hasn't been big in Japan, but it's starting to gain more interest there. The manga books from Japan are now one of the top selling books in bookstores across the United States like Barnes and Books-A-Million. The interest is there, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next couple years.
This book had some great art work. A combination of anime and marvel designs, and it provided an awesome flair to the marvel characters I grew up with.
This is mainly a bunch of Marvel variant covers by Japanese artists like Peach Momoko and Sana Takeda. There's a few pieces of original art and covers specifically for the Japanese market. With all of the different artists involved some pages are excellent while others are awful. There is a lot of wasted real estate with some pages only containing the art credits for the next page.
This was an interesting book of artwork. I specifically enjoyed the Avengers section. Loki and Squirrel Girl were also really fantastic. It was really interesting to see other artists take on these long running comic book characters.
As Tom Brevoort (Marvel VP of Publishing/Executive Editor) writes in the introduction: "The language of comics is universal. Down to the endpaper designs by Peach Momoko this is a visually stunning tribute of 36 manga artists to the Marvel Universe's myriad characters.
I love the art so much in this book. It is well done and looks amazing. There isn't really any text but each page is a tribute to a Marvel character. Can't wait to see the full size version.
The pictures were drawn well and very detailed. I found my favorite marvel character's were more defined drawn as a manga than how they're usually drawn.
