This manga series is fun to read and there are parts in it that are hilarious, but there are some parts of it that the readers such as myself might be confused about or wonder why the author made certain choices.
Before I get into that though, just a brief summary of what this series is about: the female lead Erika Shinohara wants to fit in and desperately wants validation from her two friends, so she decides to lie to them that she has a boyfriend. Her friends got suspicious of her, so she takes a picture of some random hot guy at the mall and shows it to her friends claiming it’s her boyfriend. And to her surprise, she found out this guy (Kyouya Sata) goes to the same school as her (how convenient), and they just start fake dating despite not knowing each other at all. Everything just starts from there.
What I don’t necessarily like about this series is that most of the conflict in this story revolves around Erika and Kyouya getting jealous, then getting into a fight, making up and then getting jealous again. Yes, it does make the story more enjoyable considering it is a romance manga, and romance mangas aren’t romance mangas without jealousy, but, I would’ve liked more conflict that didn’t stem from jealousy. The conflict that does come from jealousy in this book normally leads to developments in their relationship, while all the other conflicts are quite irrelevant and doesn’t lead to any development.
Speaking of character development, I really like Kyouya’s character development in the story. While he’s sometimes cold to Erika, but there’s still a lot of improvement in their relationship, more specifically his character. As for Erika, she doesn’t change much over the course of the story if not at all. She’s always trying really hard to keep the relationship together and Kyouya just doesn’t care as much. She’s mostly the one doing the chasing and putting a lot of energy into him and she’s not really getting the same thing back.
I honestly do not think Erika and Kyouya’s relationship is a healthy relationship at all. The male lead acts cold and behaves as if he doesn’t care but is also super controlling at the same time. The female lead is actually a really determined and strong headed girl but when it comes to the male lead she just gives into whatever he says and practically puts him on a pedestal. Towards the end of the series he even threatened to break up with her if she was going to go to a college in another prefecture, of course everything worked out in the end, but after that scene you realize how toxic the relationship actually is.
When I was reading the ending of Wolf Girl and Black Prince, it felt really nostalgic in a way because they were all grown up and working, married, and they came a long way from during the main part of the series they were still in high school together. I just thought that the ending was a really nice final touch to end this series with.
Overall this is a pretty good series, I really enjoyed reading it. It’s not amazingly special but if you’re looking for something that’s light and funny to read, I’d recommend for you to give this series a try.
