Kill or…well, there is no second option. It’s just kill.
I can’t really remember the last time I didn’t have my knife inside someone’s throat, chest, or dick. Five years? Ten years?
Sometimes, I feel like a superhero. Other times (most times), I just feel crazy.
Everything changes when three sexy-as-sin thieves infiltrate the convent I’ve been staying in. They believe us to be nothing but pious, innocent nuns, but they’ll find out the truth soon enough.
Gavriel, a jaguar with a sexy British accent. He’s posh, elegant…and also the best conman in the world.
Kincade, a hyena with a chip on his shoulder. He’s broken, jaded, and likes to threaten me with stabbing. Doesn’t he know I’m into that sort of stuff?
And Alec, a penguin who prefers to hide away in the van than face the violence head on. He’s the smartest man I know, but also the most talkative one.
Add on to all of that my stalker, aka the Fart, aka the silent but deadly man who may or may not be a part of the Mexican cartel. And who may or may not be sexy as sin. And who may or may not hold just as much darkness inside of him as I do.
The five of us? We have one mission—destroy a man named Phineas Graves before he can destroy us.
Four criminals. One bad guy.
And one batshit crazy assassin (hi!).
What could possibly go wrong?
Sometimes, you just have to be as ruthless as a cheetah.
Ruthless as a Cheetah is a standalone paranormal romance where the FMC will not have to choose between her love interests at the end. It contains strong language, violence, and a completely insane FMC. Please read the inside of the book for a full list of trigger warnings. Though it’s a part of The Society of Shifters shared world, Ruthless as a Cheetah can be read independently of any of the others.
4.3 stars. Ok. So i loved being in Tessa’s head. And Alec! That big, adorable goofball was so stinkin cute. With his rambling and his playful nature and his big di—Heart. Ahem. His big heart. Totally. 😂
So. This was extremely entertaining. The crazy shit that Tessah said and thought and did. Loved it. The banter and the psycho, stabby behavior. Loved it. The plot was mostly just meh. Mainly because it was pretty anticlimactic in the end. The sex. Hot. Totally loved all that we got. But I really would’ve loved to have gotten more time with them. We got a teasing, dirty scene at the beginning of the book, and some hateful handsy a little later. Then had to wait a good 60% to get full on smut with one of the guys. And then the only other scene is at the very end. And, even though they mostly take ‘turns’, if you feel me, it still felt like a group scene in terms of intimacy. I just feel like we would’ve gotten closer to all of them if we’d been able to have on page alone time with all of them. Still. Those are really my only complaints.
Everything else was super fun and enjoyable. And even those things didn’t really ruin anything, I just think things would’ve been Better if they’d been included or improved.
I’m really glad I picked this up. It gave me a few giggles, some cackles, and a couple snorts. So I call that a win.
I’ll be checking the series to see if I want it read any more of it, later. I like the world as it was set up here, so I’m curious how the other authors do with it.
First off, authors who don't post trigger warnings get low stars. I was expecting an assassin with a penchant for bloodshed. I was NOT expecting human trafficking, and the r*pe of minors to be mentioned on page freaking 2 with absolutely no warning! Bad form. But it was a brief mention. I made a note and kept going. And then it kept devolving. I'm ADHD, I can follow the bouncing ball of her thoughts no problem. I can handle insta-lust. But the constant inner monologues about their own bodies plus each other's is repetitive beyond ad nauseum. I'm halfway through, it's been 3.5 days and all the talk has been about the 1 s*x act shared with 1 character, the s*x act that got the guys in trouble before where we came in, the trauma of her assault, and body parts and euphemisms. They have 1 very shaky plan that has yet to be fleshed out and no clue how they're going to rescue the 100+ or however many women and girls being trafficked. They're 5 adults and a 12yo. No backup. No team. They barely communicate. No plan. I expected zany. This is ... I don't know what but it has no flow. A good book has either a plot, world building or interesting and evolving characters. A great book has 2 or more of those qualities. The only character I halfway like at this point is the one she refers to as The Fart. Mostly because he doesn't talk. But we have no clue why he doesn't. His presence is described so badly that at first I thought he was like a phantom, shade, or astrally projected. But my biggest pet peeve is the absolute lack of any warnings. Readers deserve a heads up. And if authors try to vague it out, hide them or leave them out altogether they will get ignored and left unread. R*pe isn't romantic. Quit making it a plot device in romances. Oh, and the facts about animal species are mangled. Cheetahs are barely counted as a large cat species. Because while large they display small species characteristics. Cats either purr or growl. Cheetahs purr like small cats. They also yowl, hiss and chirp. They don't growl. They can swim but don't enjoy water. But other cats do. Jaguars, tigers, ocelots, leopards, Maine Coones and Bengals are just a handful that enjoy water. Cheetahs also work in tandem with several canine species in the wild: African dogs, hyena, African wolves. And in zoos and rehabilitation centers they bond better with canines than other cat species. Some rather broad and false generalizations were made about cats and most people probably don't care but I find it frustrating in the age of the Internet when information is so easy to obtain.
Rather than comedy, its more an awkward attempt to cover pain. Or Tessah is just bat shit insane. There's a lot of dark stuff. Kidnapping, groomed as an assassin and child trafficking. Gav was the all in insta-mate, Kincaide the brooding back, and Hector the big, tall mysterious one. Alec was interesting. The big cinnamon roll.
There were some funny bits, like the guys dealing with her crazy. Alec and his penguin antics and Hector finally speaking really loudly. I think the funniest part was Kincaide getting tricked so badly over the blackmail. The Gala was predictable. It was one of those moments, take a breath its a trap. Emilia was awesome. Some interesting things happening, but torn between good and awkward.
I wanted to love it but it wasn’t for me. The beginning was fantastic and I loved that it was told from multiple POVs I just wasn’t a fan of the fmc instead of the Harley Quinn vibes that I think it was supposed to be, she came off as immature and childish. I really loved the idea of the book.
Good story though I couldn’t decide whether to take it seriously or not at times. There’s a lot of comedic relief but this story itself features some very dark themes.
Trigger warning: Such as childhood SA, and Smex trafficking which spoiler alert is something the fmc suffers through in the past.
I liked most of the guys though Kincade was a little bit of a prick at times and was my least favorite. I didn’t love hearing about how he fucked somebodies wife and how it was worth it. Yes I know he said it to annoy the fmc and I’m so glad she mentioned the men she f-d too to at least slightly get back at him. It made that scene bearable. But I swear there was a point where he mentions “females.” (In a Am I right type of way) In regard to the fmc acting quirky and it just annoyed me a lot, it was giving very much misogyny though I sure that’s not Katie May’s intent. But we all know that one guy that refers to women as females and they are definitely not the type of men to go around respecting women. He just sort of irked me and the fact that he was one of the first of the men the fmc got intimate with ( not all the way) annoyed me because he had literally not shown any redeeming qualities yet.
All the other men were so incredibly lovable (Alec my sweet baby penguin boy) and they made up for the shortcomings Kincade displayed. He does become likable later don’t get me wrong, but idk it’s a standalone and I needed a little bit more from him. I mean at least he does acknowledge that’s he’s kind of been awful to the fmc and worries about the whole mating thing.
Which speaking of the mating thing. It ended up being so incredibly anticlimactic. I didn’t get the fanfare of them hiding the fact that she is their mate. There was no big reaction, though it seemed like there would be this huge drama circulating around it. It was kind of disappointing, however I will say if you want to read something dark that has a good amount comic relief to cushion the blow of it. This story is for you. It’s definitely a fun read.
Fun story for the most part, life kept distracting me. I absolutely loved that the heroine is a badass cheetah shifter. It was pretty awesome that she was both literally and figuratively more awesome than some of her mates, like one in fact who is an adorable penguin. Nice to have the roles reversed now and then. The romance is fairly slow burn which was perfect for all involved, especially the heroine as her past causes her to have a few understandable hangups. I mean who would be normal after being kidnapped as a kid right after gaining her animal for the first time, only to then be trained as an emotionless assassin.
Checked out with kindle unlimited, April 2023. This was my first standalone book by Katie May. I was excited to try this assassin, urban fantasy, story. I have a weakness for a good assassin story and this one didn’t disappoint. Tessah is a cheetah shifter kidnapped to work for a group of assassins: The sisterhood. I know Tessah’s general attitude will be a downer for some people, but she did grow on me as her character arc progressed. I feel like May needed her outrageous antics to balance some of the darker plot aspects, like kidnapping and raping young women. I didn’t expect to like this after the first chapter begins where it does, but I did enjoy most of this. I’ll always enjoy revenge stories and Tessah certainly got hers at the end. It was nice to watch Tessah grow into herself after she vanquishes her demons and finds her version of a happy ending. (4/5 rating)

Tessah and her twisted, psychopathic thinking had me laughing throughout. The guys are fun, but kinda clueless on how to deal with Tessah. There is a background story about them wanting to take down a certain creep, which is resolved a little too easily, but for me the story was really about Tessah and forming her bonds with the guys. Great stand-alone!
Now that was a great story!! It was long and detailed in every aspect and I seriously loved it.
The multiple POV is the best thing ever! We not only got to know Tessah really well but also each of the guys.
Gavriel was a strength throughout the book and I loved his character. His love and leadership was so enjoyable to read and his immediate devotion to Tessah was so absolute.
Alec and his witty humour was funny to read. His loyalty to the guys and then Tessah and also his computers (lol) was enduring to read.
Kincade definitely had his faults, but once he fights through his anger and thoughts, he loves hard and it is so beautiful to see.
I think Hector (aka The Fart) had the most and best insight into Tessah with their love of torture and the life they had been dealt. They seemed to have the deepest connection for me. His ability to make Tessah realize that she could be vulnerable was so beautifully written.
I seriously seriously loved this book. It went so deep and into detail and with the twist and turns I didn’t loose my enthusiasm for these characters.
I tired but I just couldn't..... She just got in my nerves with all her stupid rambling.... I can take characters like her but she took it to far. Plus a book about child kidnapping, training them to be assassins, beating them, heck beating them if they have any technology like a switch. They can mate, or leave. We get told the MOTHERS sent tessah out to track down one who left and tessah found her and her infant! They killed them. Wtf? No thanks. Then Tessah who is supposed to be deadly let's a Mother beat her all well saying she wished she could kill her well why not? Why not take them out at night ? One at a time your a cheetah and trained. The mother's told them cheetahs don't have mates but they do. This book sounded so good but I got annoyed and frustrated and the who child kidnapping and killing is just to much.
Nothing is as personal as your sense of humor. What is funny to me, can be lame to someone else and the other way round. I'm therefore always a little hesitant when picking up something humorous. Especially in a foreign language humor doesn't always feel the same. However, I absolutely love Katie May and everything she writes, so I do want to make my collection with May books complete. And this book sounded perfect to read in train and bus.
I have to admit that the chapters in the beginning weren't really my thing. I really needed time to get used to the main character. For me a lot of her jokes and humor felt a little forced. As if the author had really tried to put in as much nonsense as she could. However, during the story the silly humor lessened a little and the more meaningful conversations, emotions and plots were getting a little more spotlight. I started to like it more and more.
Because once more the author came up with a lovely plot, despite the fact that this is a comedy. And although the humor should be the shining star the author also didn't shy away from putting in some really dark stuff. The plot itself had quite some dark elements. It's clear that the characters have been through quite a lot of dark moments and although the finale didn't last too long it was still kinda thrilling and exciting.
And slowly I also started caring more and more about the characters. Like I said, it took me some time to get used to the heroine, but during the story she showed that she can be serious and that she can listen and connect. Just like all the guys had a similar kind of development. At first most of them seem pretty tough, but slowly we're getting to see more and more of their true personalities. And if you know me it won't be a surprise that Alex was my favorite. I wanna marry a pinguïn shifter too!
OMG, this book….this book guys…the first 70% of this story is most definitely one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. I’m not even joking. I was laughing so hard I was crying within the first few chapters!
Tessa (our FMC), was the most perfect FMC I could have ever hoped for. She’s 100% insane, but not ‘she’s trying too hard’ type of insane. This girl is the ‘innocently psychopathic, hysterically murderous assassin’ type of insane.
“I once performed a two-hour long interpretive dance while dismembering a man into fifty pieces.”
“A note for future Tessah—find a turtle and then train it how to eat people both dead and alive. Then, open up a business called Snapper Turtle…where we specialize in snapping off and gobbling limbs.”
I had so much fun reading this book! I don’t care if there were hidden issues or problems with it. I don’t care if the world building wasn’t perfect. I don’t care. I didn’t notice any problems because I was too busy laughing my ass off.
I would 100% read this story again. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves slightly dark, definitely bloody, reverse harem stories.
- 📖 Stand-alone - 👀 Multiple, first person POV - 🙋🏽♂️ 4 fated mates (jaguar, penguin, hyena, wolverine) - 🐆 FMC is a cheetah shifter - ❤️4/5 romance stars - 🔥 medium burn - 🌶 2.5/5 spicy stars - 🚫 No MM, No OW, No bully - ‼️ triggers: this book is bloody, FMC kills and tortures men and loves it. History of child abuse (including SA - it’s mentioned, but not in detail), PTSD
'I freaking bitch-slap the man with his own dick.'
Now that's a way to start a book. Seriously this book pulled me in from the first chapter and wouldn’t let me go until I finished reading it at 2 am. I laughed, I cried, I rooted, I shook my head in second-hand embarrassment. I felt and lived it all.
Iconic book with so many laugh worthy moments:
‘My mate… The woman made for me… The other half of my heart and soul… Just dismissed me. What the fuck?’
‘“Gabriel.” “Gavriel.” I emphasize the V as she continues to lead me farther and farther away from the other shifters. “Gabriev,” she corrects seriously. “No, it's…” Fuck it. “I suppose Gabriev works.” What. The. Fuck. Seriously, what the bloody fuck is wrong with me? I don't even bother to correct her that Gabriev isn't my real name. I don't dare say anything that will make her stop. Hell, maybe I’ll even change my name officially with the British government. Gabriev certainly has a nice ring to it.’
‘He’s right when he called me a filthy whore. The stuff I like in the bedroom…well… It’s not exactly normal. Hell, it’s probably not even healthy.’
‘“I’m gonna…you know…get clothes on.” I awkwardly jab my thumb behind me as she continues to stare up at me, her features utterly impassive. And then—because the only sex I’ve been having lately has been of the porno variety—I shoot at her with some finger guns. Fucking. Finger. Guns.’
DNF - I wanted to enjoy this book and the story had potential, but the characters were just too wacky. I love a FMC that is funny and a little crazy, but Tessah felt more like a someone with the comedic portraying of multiple personality disorder due to trauma than a real person. There just wasn't enough of a real person in any of the main characters. I managed to make it to 73% before I realized that I just don't care what happens, because none of the characters are in any way shape of form relatable. To me they felt more like stereotypes that were cast because it was more "fun" than having real characters with personalities that have to develop and hopefully evolve. I wanted to know more about Tessah and what she was going through emotionally, but I didn't get much in that regard at all. Would not recommend, unless you enjoy a FMC that feels like Harley Quinn with multiple personalities, no real emotional depth and you only get to see the surface - oh yes and the whole insta-love due to a mating bond.
This was the funniest book I’ve ever read! Irreverent, ridiculous, dark, and somehow at the same time bright humor is foremost, which is fortunate, because the FMC has maybe the saddest backstory in my reading history. She’s a genuine psychopath, is broken and stitched back together in a way that is impossibly relatable and incomprehensible at once. The whirlwind of outright laughing followed by ugly sobbing is dizzying in a way that at the end is beautifully balanced after a wild ride. The harem is a combination of instalove and working through stuff. The size difference trope is strong and beautiful in this, too, though in classic Katie May unexpected ways. I scared my coworkers, husband, neighbors, and pets laughing so loudly and demonically. Seriously, evil giggles in public places happened, and in one memorable experience, nearly resulted in me being arrested. So read this book, if read nothing else this year… just do it in private. Like maybe a soundproof room.
By 21% in, Alec's first POV chapter, he became my definite favourite character. I freaking love him. He sounded so sweet! I don't want to spoil a thing so I won't say why, but I had a big grin on my face reading about him. Hector is also a favourite... each of the characters have such different personalities, and such different reasons to love them! You could easily have multiple readers choosing favourite men with their own reasons why, and none of them would be wrong!
TINY TINY KIND OF BUT NOT REALLY SPOILER: I did question why one of the characters seemed mute throughout the whole book. It was fine, and it worked, but the fact it said at one point in the book that he "made calls" to men loyal to him, makes it clear he CAN likely talk. I was going to point this out in the review, but at the very end something happens and basically confirms he is NOT mute. I won't say what, but I will say I LOVE the reason it's confirmed - a very worthy cause!!
It's an OK book. Not the best yet not the worst. So I'd rate it a 3 star read. Though the fmc rambles a bit to much I like quirky and crazy but she seemed more ditzy than psychotic. Also I skimmed quite a but which is mainly due to the filler of her rambles throughout the book. Another thing I didn't like the ending and the final battle was underwhelming. Now that I finished the book I can say it didn't meet my expectations. It was pretty boring in all honesty.
******SPOILER ALERT ********
The author writes throughout the book how the mfc wants to peg one of her mates but we never got the scene so that disappointed me also cuz I was kinda looking forward to it and also was looking forward to some babies cuz of one scene then the author at the ends all like nope so now I kinda wanna drop my rating. Lol now that I reread this Spoiler all I can say is lawdy the run on I just wrote was ever lasting but I'm not going back so just ignore my unintelligent writing for the time being.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m running for my life, I don’t have time to stop and argue about unrelated things. This mfc apparently does. There was no sense of urgency in any of the run scenes. The story is very disjointed and makes the reader feel like a ping pong ball. There isn’t a natural flow of the storyline, which makes it hard to read. There are number of cliffhangers throughout the book, most of which leave you hanging. In all truth, if I wasn’t so OCD, I wouldn’t have finished the story. As it was, I was skimming and skipping a lot just to get it done. I’m not one too usually write negative reviews, but I just couldn’t not leave a review of this one, people needed to be warned how frustrating this read is.
Such a great book. Tessah is absolutely fantastic, her brand of crazy is the sweetest thing ever, apart from when she's d!smember!ng a body of cutting off a d!ck. I laughed so much at this book, but it's also much more than this. Tessah has been truly hurt in the past, when I read about her dad, I nearly threw my kindle at the wall! I loved Hector, aka the f@rt and Alec, the t!t biting penguin. Gabriel is smooth and Kincade is an angry d!ck of a hyena! The last group scene, when she met 'little' Alec 😉 was totally hilarious, I was cackling like a mad woman. Utterly brilliant!
If I wasn’t amused I would rate this lower. One thing that bothered me was all the Gdamnimg. I felt like every sentence out of everyone’s mouth had it at least once. It was over used and kinda annoying. That dropped my rating down because not so much cursing but because it was wayyy to much to be used in every sentence. This book amused me with its crazy. I found myself smiling, so it was a light read. All the characters kinda seemed to have almost the same personalities, except for Hector ( who didn’t talk at all the whole way through. No he was not mute.) It just seemed like a silly little book to read in your spare time but not one I would run out to buy.
This book is a standalone in The Society of Shifters. This shared world series can be read in any order. I was hooked right from the start and completely drawn in. The characters are wonderful and really like the unique shifters. Tessah is a great fmc , she is tough, funny and just a little bit crazy. I loved her men and how they ate good for her in different ways. I really liked that the story is told in multiple point of views. While the story is mostly a romantic comedy there are things that may be triggering but if this us okay this book is a vert enjoyable read.
I was really close to DNFing this. It got slightly better further in. Tessah has way too much inner monologue trying to prove how ‘unhinged’ and ‘crazy’ she is. I get it. You like to castrate men and torture them. You dont need to point out how much of a killer you are. This really could’ve been 200 pages instead of 400. I felt like the last 10% was rushed. She was hunting this guy for five YEARS and they get him in one go? It was all over that fast?
The start of her relationship with her men started out slow, which I appreciated. But towards the end shes already telling them she wants to mate and fall in love? Overall a decent read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ruthless as a Cheetah is chaos in the best way. The FMC is unapologetically violent, hilarious, and absolutely nuts—and I loved every second of it. Katie May throws us into a madcap mission with a group of misfit shifters and one wild assassin, and the energy never lets up. Gavriel, Kincade, Alec, and the mysterious "Fart" bring very different vibes to the table, and the dynamic among all five is pure gold. The plot balances over-the-top action, steamy tension, and surprisingly tender moments with finesse. Honestly, it felt like Suicide Squad meets paranormal romance—with knives. So many knives. Insane and addictive.
This was a fun ride to revenge in the mind of a crazy assassin. Tessah is absolutely cracked, and her train of thought often derails, the guys meanwhile are all enamored with her in their own way and watching them deal with her crazy is very entertaining. I wish there had been more time in shifter form for them all considering the different and interesting animals they all are, but nonetheless i greatly enjoyed this and laughed my way through a great deal of it
Ruthless as a Cheetah, a stand alone book of the Society of Shifters series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). Books in this series can be read in any order. So much potential and lots of humor, but this book needed a proofreader's firm hand, mostly improper word use. Also, there were too many similarities between characters, it was hard to separate them, for example: fingers through hair, finger guns, naming vehicles. Promising author, but defining the characters more, and giving them their own unique mannerisms would have improved the read for me.
I cannot express how much fun I had reading this absolutely wonderful story! I found myself laughing out loud a lot, that's not to say that there weren't serious and heart wrenching moments, but the dialogue with Tessah and whoever she was dealing with could have you falling on the floor from laughing so hard. It was awesome. Great characters and an interesting storyline will keep you reading, but the laughter will keep you up way past the time you should be sleeping😉
I loved this book so much. This is the first book in a shared universe by multiple different authors, and it was amazing. I really enjoyed that all of them were different shifters and how they became their animal. I loved Tessah she is incredible. Her guys were just what she needed. I'm really excited for more books in this universe, and i can't wait to see if we get to see Tessah and her guys again. Amazing five-star read that I would definitely recommend.
I guess I'm twisted because; I thought this book was utterly funny, dramatic, heartwarming if not morally depraved. But, whatever. It was written well and kept me intrigued enough to give it 5 stars. If a lot of blood/gore, depraved humor, explicit sexual acts and polygamy isn't your thing.. Do. Not. Read. Lots of cursing as well. 🤷♀️ Happy Reading 📚
So, I can’t remember the last time a book made me laugh and hot so much! An absolutely hilarious and steamy read. Tessah very much gives of Harley Quinn and Brooklyn vibes and I am here for it! A great plot with great characters, you get a great time even more so if you like morally challenged, dark, and sinfully yummy so curl up and be prepared to binge on Tessah and her mates.
