Wings of Ruby and Flame

Rate this book
I'm hunted by four dragon shifter princes who’re competing to catch me first.
Their elders believe I possess magic capable of destroying the dragon flights, and demand that I'm caught and dealt with.
But if one of the four succeeds and I’m delivered to the elders, I don't know who's in the greatest danger—me or the princes.

If the dragons think I’m an easy target, they’re wrong. Although I’m a noble daughter of the Aureate Court, I live with my elven assassin father amongst mercenaries and thieves. Devin taught me his skills, and I’m handy with a dagger, happy to follow in his less-than-noble footsteps. But when a job goes awry, I find myself in a delicate situation with a seductive dragon prince who tells me a shocking secret.

My family hid me away from court to keep my existence secret from the dragon elders. Why? I contain the powerful Ebon dragon magic that once destroyed their race and could do so again. Somebody needs to explain to me how and why this happened because I'm not a dragon.

And I’m no longer hidden since my new ‘friend’ is one of four smoldering hot dragon princes who’re hunting me.

Cam, the Sapphire Prince who claims he'll keep me safe, Eli the seductive Ivory Prince, and Emerald Prince Luc who's the more diplomatic of the four. Then there's Velanor, the ambitious Ruby Prince, who doesn’t hide his hatred. I have the soul of the Ebon Queen who killed his people and he’ll happily watch me die.

Whoever returns me to the elders first earns prestige, and Velanor intends to win their competition by any means necessary. But victory would come at a cost neither of us want.

Can the other princes protect me from him? Because If I truly do contain the magic and soul of the Ebon Queen, and I unleash her magic to defend myself from Velanor and the elders, I'm unsure who's in the most danger.

The princes or me.

Wings of Ruby and Flame is the first in the dragon shifter fantasy romance series Her Dragons Reborn. I liked the beginning of this book, but overall it made me kind of uncomfortable

The fact that she was so helpless pretty much the whole time was really depressing, and I know for a fact the one who was going to rape her is going to be redeemed (in her eyes) at some point which I don't agree with.

I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. When I first started to read, I was dreading the "girl is suddenly special and also seduces all the love interests" trope. And while she is special, presumably, she isn't automatically powerful - it's something that's not really awoken yet. And yes, it is implied that this will be a reverse harem (given two of four princes are already drawn in by her), but I appreciate that it isn't one of those books where they immediately have sex and bond. I have read a few like that and it really ruins the plot.

I didn't expect so much plot to be put into a book that took 2 hours to read, but it really intrigues me. While I wasn't fond of the sudden cliffhanger, it was written well and unexpected - and I can live with waiting just a month before the next book.

Overall, I really did enjoy it!

Just not good. Not going to get into it all. Too much happening. Kind of cheating? I don’t know. No thanks.

Ria is not a particularly compelling character. For someone who is supposed to be an assassin she's pretty ineffectual.

good

WARNING! Cliffhanger (about a 4/5; no obvious life threatening situations, but a huge question!)
NOTE: Aurelia is the daughter of Calla from the four horsemen series by the author, and the series benefits from having read that one first.

A daughter of the six who freed everyone from the tyrannical reign of the ebon queen, Aurelia thinks of herself as a tough but insignificant human.
Being taken by dragon princes to their rulers, Aria discovers that the dragons think of her as a threat, and that the four dragon princes are fighting to be the ones to get her there…

Aurelia is not an especially likeable character, and to be frank, the princes are just as bad. It’s not until the end of the book that any of them redeem themselves even a little!
There are explanations for their unlikeability though, and it’s a journey of discovery as we travel through the story, and things become clear. While Aurelia is far more bluff than action, the princes aren’t exactly free agents either.
The book itself, however, is well written. The story is interesting, and despite finding the characters objectionable, I’m intrigued by their story. It’s a tale of consequences, of what happens after the world is saved… and I suspect a tale of how not to take things for granted.

An interesting contemporary RH fantasy for fans of the genre.

Ruby and Flame

I enjoyed the first two books in this unfinished series. I don't know for sure, but assume it will be five books, one for each dragon flight. It is well written and edited, but confusing in many parts. There are many secrets and revelations that spin the story. It is a sequel to her previous series about the Ebon Queen. Aurelia is the daughter of a harem of men who surround Calla, the FMC of the previous series. She believes she is the bio daughter of her Elven father and he has hidden her apart and trained her as an assassin for the good. Suddenly she is snatched up by a prince dragon shifter and her family tells her she may have the essence of dragon in her. They agree to her going to the dragon realm for thirty days to explore her possible powers. Along the Way the other princes steal her away until they face the dragon queen and her harem, the First born. The queen is basically evil, calculating and cruel and Aurelia quickly learns she is trapped. The adventure and romance ensue.

Absolutely fabulous ❤🐲 !!

In one moment Ria's world is turned upside down. Welcome to the world of this fierce, sassy, independent... oh and did I mention deadly female 😉, as she comes to terms with huge secrets hidden from her about herself. Such an adrenaline packed adventure- filled with dragon politics, deception, alpha males, secrets, surprises, and one spunky female that throws everyone off their game. So many dangerous games at play...what's truth and what's a lie, and who will come out the victor? Such a fun book to read as I loved the previous series about her mother. Just be warned...this does indeed end with a cliffhanger. Ria grabbed hold of my heart from the start with her sass and attitude. I can't wait to see what happens next...so get ready for more dragons everyone 😉❤. I highly recommend this read- two enthusiastic thumbs up.

⭐️ 1 - DNF at 70% - the premise of this book was fun and interesting, but the execution was bad. I liked Ria being an assassin and I liked her fiesty spirit. I hated all of the love interests, they were all sexist and spoke about women as if they were nothing more than lustfull objects. And they were literally low-key assaulting the fmc and making weird sexual jokes for no reason. Some were funny but others made my skin crawl. Especially after Cam promised she would not be harmed or touched then broke that promise and licked her face. And I hated the way the men spoke about her when she wasn't in the room, like she's this evil, scheming monster who isn't worthy of any decency or respect. And in no short terms, one of the mmcs said he would have no problem forcing himself on her to get the answers he needed. Absolutely not, I DNF'd it on the spot after he said that.

The book inside this gorgeous cover, does not disappoint!

Aurelia is an assassins daughter, highly trained and deadly. Her mother absorbed an extinct Ebon dragon essence, and unknown to Ria (as Aurelia prefers to be known) this has been passed on to her.

Enter the four hot, smouldering and sometimes not very nice, Dragon Princes. All in competition to capture Ria and take her back to their Capital, to ensure she isn't a danger to their race.

There is deception, danger and delicious heat that follows Ria's journey. The Prince of Ruby and Flame, Vel, is oh so dark and dominant but I can't wait for the other three Princes to step up and stake their claims too.

Fantastic world building and descriptive language. Gimme book two as soon as possible please 🙏.

Interesting story- ruined by confusing writing

I really wanted to read this book, but the writing made it impossible for me. The flow was consistently interrupted by changing the subject or adding in information about the FMC’s childhood.

The sentences are confusing to understand. Taken by themselves I can see what the author means, but put together it feels like I’m reading a google translation from a different language. It’s not necessarily grammatically incorrect, but there are better ways to word what the author is trying to convey.

If it was a few grammar mistakes that didn’t pull me completely out of the story I wouldn’t even mention it, but it’s so detrimental to my reading that I couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters.

This book is an awesome start to a great series. I loved Ria in this book. She is the daughter of a couple from a different series. Ria is really fun. I love that her adventures make her grow and she doesn't take no for an answer. The world building in this book is really unique. Often, I find that anything dealing with dragons has too many cliches. Instead, this book is the opposite. The twists are really fun. I enjoyed that each of her four love interests are there for her. The romance also has great pacing. I liked that it is slow burn. Ria has to take her time knowing her dragons. In summary, go check out this fun book. It is cute and fun.

This book is already so different than Calla’s book, but still similar enough to appreciate past characters we already know and love! I’m highly invested in this story and ready to see what happens next to Aurelia! Ria is a true fighter and warrior princess. She’s ready to take what she wants, especially the decisions on what she does with her Ebon essence and who she decides to be with. So ready to see her conquer them all and show Talindra she’s not the only queen of dragons! Love this book and I highly recommend it to all fantasy book lovers and dragon shifter romance books lovers, too! It’s an enthralling and enticing read, for sure!

It appears to be an extended story from the Daughter of Shadow series. FMC is the daughter of the main characters of that series. I didn't know that when I started the book. Once I read a few pages it became clear to me this was a follow-up story because the author was attempting to subtly plug information about the other series into this one. I never finished Daughter of Shadow, honestly seemed like a good read I just lost interest in it.

You can probably enjoy this one without reading the other, I personally didn't wish to read a book about the daughter when I never got around to finishing the mother's story.

yeah no, I should've DNFed instead of just keep reading. Did I enjoy it? Not really. I was confused for the whole book and then Ria was just that much of an compelling character. She fell so, so flat for me, and then the whole forcing her to being with these dragons who really don't even want to be with her (one of them do) and one even suggesting that he was "going to force the Ebon dragon out of her"? Uh no, sorry, I do not agree and you need to sit your little Ruby Prince ass down and never speak again. This is the last and final book I will read of this author-I will not read anymore of her books after this.

This story was quick to draw me in and had dragons!!! (I mean, dragons will almost always draw me in). Our main character, Ria, learns some hard things about some secrets her mom and dads have been keeping from her and they have some pretty serious consequences for Ria's life. She quickly gets pulled into the orbit of 4 dragon princes and watch out for some chemistry! This book does end on a cliffhanger though, so go in knowing that. As of my reading, book 2 is available. Whew!

This is my first book by LJ Swallow and I loved it. I'm a sucker for participating books and Dragons are one of my favorites. Ria was such a fun character to read. There is so much intrigue, lies, secrets you're not sure what's what yet. This does end on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what happens next!

meh

Has promise. It was multiple pov. Not a fan of Vel, seems to be the kind that wants to use force to get his way, regardless if he hurts someone in the process all in the name of power. I’m definitely interested in how they will hide all of this from Talindra…

I feel like I am missing something here, I don't understand what is going on. She kept talking about who her dad was and I was like what?? When did this come up? Is there another series before this because I feel like I am missing some information.
