The action-packed, full-color graphic novel first released as a webcomic! In this supernatural dystopian tale, one student goes from pampered brat...to wanted criminal.
Piras, the spoiled son of a military hero, dreams of becoming a Knight for the Nova Empire–until the day he literally crashes into a mysterious woman on the street and his life is turned upside down. Rescued by a shadowy group from a monstrous creature, Piras is mesmerized by the strange new power that flows through him—only to learn that the Empire will hunt him down for it. It’s the end of his charmed life and the start of a new quest for the truth behind the Nova Empire and the people it labels enemies. This action-packed, full-color webcomic is now a graphic novel!
Just to disclose I have read the webcomic so I'm coming in with a bit of future knowledge on this one.
I really recommend this story to people who enjoy the shonen genre of manga, and those who enjoy slow and deep character development and motivation (of which I'm a real sucker for). Over the course of the story a lot of the assumptions a reader makes about these characters are challenged while never being contradictory. It really makes the characters feel alive.
The art also employs a lot of bright, bold color and lighting, which really helps sell the atmosphere of the environments.
It's telling that I used to be a huge webcomic buff when I was a teen, but as an adult this is pretty much the only one that I keep tuning into.
A good mystery and some humour wrapped up amongst fine graphics. I’ll look out for the second book.
Favourite quotes:
"This is actually Vicky the Fifth." "Hm… But your Bioscript record says you got your driver’s license in April. (Pauses) That was last month."
"Hello? I’m sorry, Piras can’t meet with you. He’s at school. I hope you understand." "Umm, no? I’m sorry you have to spy on him when he’s having a private conversation. You should work on your over-controlling conduct. It’s not pretty. Now put Piras back on, please. I was speaking to him."
A promising start. I liked the artwork and the colouring. The story starts slow, but the worldbuilding is mysterious enough to keep it interesting. Thumbs up for the first monster design, and I want to see some of the others hinted at during the cute intermission.
I enjoyed this enough to continue reading. It seems only volume 1 is available in print right now, but the story can be continued on the webcomic's site.
This comic is truly wonderful. Volume 1 covers the first three chapters of the webcomic, and translates very well to paper form.
Piras is a very captivating protagonist. He's impulsive, brash, and terribly earnest -- he's such a joy to follow along with, even he proves subpar at decision making. The action and the characters are real high points for me, as well as the art. Saavedra has created a very exciting and clever world, with mysteries just dying to be unpacked. What seems to be a generic set-up unravels to have a lot more depth.
I look forward to seeing the rest of chapters in published form!
Trading on his family's reputation is all Piras has left of his father and mother following their mysterious deaths. A encounter, while running late for school, opens Piras's eyes to the truth about Nova and his origins.
Beautifully drawn and filled with quirky characters, I really hope there will be more Awaken so I can follow Pires's journey.
The story itself was interesting but I felt myself wanting more. This could be partially because it’s only the first 3 chapters but if a second book gets released I may give it a read.
