The following pages are a translation of Father John Roothaan’s “De Ratione Meditandi.” It is an explanation of the most commonly used method of prayer proposed by St. Ignatius in the Spiritual Exercises. There is urgent need of the warning that whosoever wishes to meditate with fruit must assiduously beg for grace: “Lord teach me to pray; teach me to meditate.”

About the author

A Dutch Jesuit, he entered the Society in 1804 and was elected twenty-first Superior-General of the Society of Jesus in July 1829.
