This is the last of the Delta Force Echo sub-series of spec ops and K-9 military romantic thrillers in Fiona Quinn's Iniquus Special Forces series world. It's also the best of the 3 though all are excellent.

Jett works for a secret military company that sends teams out essentially on research and recognizance rather than active ones where combat skills are needed. She's Kyrgyszstan, based in Arslanbob and the Chatkat Mountain Range region. alone after her teammate was medevacuated after a viper bite. Unknown to her, she's the only one left in the region whose been checking in regularly as instructed, and her organization together with the FBI and Delta Force are sending in Echo Team to extract her and find the missing researchers. Havoc is the Echo team member assigned to extract.

Havoc arrives at the guest house where Jett is supposed to be having her mandatory day of rest only to find her missing, believed to have gone a hot springs area to ease neck and back pain in an area of the mountains believed to be haunted and evil. Just before he finds her, Havoc is 'found' by Digger, one of the missing team members' K-9. From there, Havoc and Jett join forces to find Digger's handler, get him to safety, and also join forces with the rest of Echo to search for and rescue if need be the 2 still missing team members.

This was a really great thriller, with just enough action and plot line to keep you interested and engaged. Jett and Havoc as well as Digger are fantastic interesting characters, and the chemistry between Jett and Havoc is front and center, from one of the most physical and clever meet cutes I've read in a long time, possibly ever. There's lots of dialogue that serves to not only to flesh out the characters for each other, but also to fill in gaps in the connective underlying plot that I wasn't remembering too clearly as I read the first 2 in the trilogy some time ago. It also ties it into the Iniquus World. It's very light on the smut - almost none - but I will say that the body searches they had to give each other for paralytic tics were HOT! Far hotter than more explicit sex scenes for sure.

Quinn's Iniquus World books are extensive and inter-related. However, I've not read them all and mostly read them in random order, which works fine as each book is a self-contained operation centered on 2 specific characters. Most if not all feature K-9s who are important to the storyline.

Attention grabbed from first page until last.

CIA agent White is pulling Echo team into another situation. This time Havoc is the teammate that might connect with a HEA if he can find Jett in time.

Rosetta Jetteau Vargas (“Jett”) is in Arslanbob, Kyrgyzstan ostensibly to document rainfall in the Walnut Forest as a research scientist. She actually works for the Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) and is looking for “something” that is disrupting worldwide communications. Intel has indicated that there is an apparatus hidden by the Zoric family (from previous books in the Iniquus series) in one of two geographic areas, one of which is in Kyrgyzstan. Three groups of two pseudo-scientists have been commissioned to find the apparatus. Two of the groups have disappeared and Jett’s partner was bitten by a viper and transported to a hospital leaving Jett alone to continue her search.

Timothy Nathan Hale (“Havoc”) is a member of Delta Force G Squadron Echo and tasked with finding and retrieving Jett from the field. He finds her face down in a hot springs pool and attempts to rescue her, discovering too late that she is in no need of rescuing. It is an interesting meetup, and the plot escalates from there, never pausing until the end of the story.

This is the third in a trilogy of books written about Delta Force Echo; it is not necessary to read the first two books to get maximum enjoyment from this book. It is well written with subplots and characters rich in dynamic layers. The story is an excellent read.

Most chapters include the day and local time in the chapter header, using 24-hour clock time. Chapter 32 displays an earlier time than the previous chapter.
 Chapter 30: Wed 20:00 Kyrgyzstan
 Chapter 31: Wed 21:00 Kyrgyzstan
 Chapter 32: Wed 20:25 Kyrgyzstan
Here, the time has slipped between chapter 30 and chapter 31, but the subject matter in chapter 32 flows naturally from chapter 31.

There are also a few minor errors that cause the reader to stop momentarily to consider what the writer meant to say. For instance:
 At the beginning of the book, in the Table of Contents, the “Dedication” is written “. Dedication” and I’m not sure why. It is not something that interrupts the book, but it is a curiosity.
 “The only problem with theseDuning ‘yes, please’ thoughts….” I’m thinking that perhaps the writer meant to use the word “dunning,” as in “The only problem with these dunning ‘yes, please’ thoughts….”
 Jett’s name is misspelled: “’Let’s say we made a call to our TOC in Jalal-Abad,’ Jet said.”
 The 24-hour clock time is used in the header of most chapters. Chapter 31, however, is labeled “Wednesday, Twenty-One Hours.” That should be “Wednesday, Twenty-One Hundred Hours” in order to follow the logical time progression between chapters.

I rated this book 5-stars because the story grabbed me from the first chapter and kept me completely engrossed through the Epilogue. I was totally immersed in the story and even put off fixing dinner in order to continue with this delicious book! As always, I look forward to the next book. So many delightful choices: I do not want to be piggish, so I try hard not to binge-read every book one right after the other…so, so difficult!

Some really good parts; pacing is off

The beginning of this book has a leisurely pace with a good deal of time spent developing the characters, if not too much time reviewing their professional histories. The protagonists are quite likable, but the female is given way more time on the page to be a brilliant survivalist. The male has very little to do in the way of heroics or romantic moves. This makes the book feel unbalanced.

The overarching plot of bad guys taking over world satellite communications is not resolved, which is annoying for a first time reader of the series who may believe the book will finish with no loose ends. By the 75% point, it’s fairly obvious that the author has no intention of dealing with the big plot. The protagonists in this story have a minor subplot conflict to resolve that is mostly a wilderness rescue situation featuring a little brainy problem-solving, and then they’re back in civilization. No big deal. That’s why the pacing is off. Readers are led to believe an international, world-ending problem needs fixing, but this novel does not directly address it. It only deals with a “park-ranger saving an injured tourist” type storyline. It feels like a bait and switch.

The romance develops nicely for the first 2/3, but then the female is “making the moves” and the scene skips to next day, then one last mission, which is over very quickly, and then there’s an epilogue focused mostly on other characters. This is very disappointing. The book would be so much better without all the characters from other books parading through at the end, diluting the momentum of the story.

The protagonists need more time on the page together as a team to have a dramatic conclusion. As it is, it’s rather tame and anticlimactic. The final problem is resolved too easily by a group of people the reader may know very little about, and it’s over quickly. Bummer.

Maybe readers dedicated to the series will enjoy the story more as the list of names will have more emotional resonance for them.

I wavered between 3 & 4 stars on this one.

The good: The story had a lot going on and was much more complicated than the average romance novel which I really appreciated and kept me interested and turning pages. I enjoyed the banter and dialogue because it felt very real. Jett was strong and capable and could hold her own with men and not come off bitchy while Havoc fit the typical military warrior mold without being cocky or a control freak. I liked them both and could tell they were a good fit.

The bad: The main characters don't meet until my kindle showed 35% after that, there was only one sex scene, and it was more like quick foreplay inserted into the story only because the author felt she had to write it. There was also a quick kiss much later on so, if you are expecting "romance" or even sex, in this book, you won't find it.

Sometimes the story goes off into unnecessary tangents and it's very balanced. Like Havoc's plane ride or too much time on Havoc & Jett trying to rescue one of her coworkers when more time should have spent on their actual relationship.

Both Jett & Havoc are cerebral and seem to just "decide" they are going to have a relationship. Which would have been fine because I too am a "thinker" more than a "feeler" but I still have emotions and, as a reader, I need to have some emotions between the main characters to believe their story. Jett & Havoc simply "deciding" to be in a relationship felt too clinical and all the work and build up for the ending to be rushed into an epilogue left me highly unsatisfied because I just spent several hours with these characters and wanted/needed more than a paragraph on how their story plays out.

Overall, had there been a little more romance and the ending was fleshed out as much as the rest of the story, this easily would have been a 4-5 star read for me. I'll definitely give this author another shot.

Another excellent novel.

Jett is truly an amazing woman.
Havoc, kind laid back, out the box thinker, all around kind of man most would call a unicorn. Yet, Jett and Havoc are both similar in many ways too. Neither considered long term relationship, they simply never met anyone who made them feel it.
There is some wonderful humor, Jett is amazingly quick witted, and her obvious IQ, shines through the dialogue she has with Havoc. Havoc is definitely high on the intelligence level too, but Jett is unique. Together, they simply work.
Havoc's assignment changed to Jett's quickly, Jett was not a woman to take someone's word for a new assignment. Jett wasn't allowing Havoc to take her anywhere until she found the rest of her team.
This was definitely one of the harder novels in this part of the series. The ending , as well as the climax, was sad, and also, good.
It is a tribute to Ms. Quinn's writing how well she worked these two simultaneous issues together.
The ending... Well if you have never read a novel by Fiona Quinn, you have missed much. If this is your first and are considering, read it! A moving novel!

And as usual, Ms. Quinn, stellar!
Sooooo..
NEXT ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just love the way that Fiona writes her novels. With all the description and interest of the countries she depicts.
This story was similar too Steve and Anna and also remi and t rex.
They were all on missions wirh lots of action and suspense. Yet there was time for the attraction and romance to blossom between hero and heroine.
In some stories we get sexy times but in this one, we just got attraction which, for me, was fine.
There was so much interesting history that Fiona wrote about and just included in the banter as the mission moved on.
Although I am reading chronologically , I i'm enjoying all the characters that I most probably would have missed if I had stayed with the series idea.
It seems that the missions in the book I'm listening to, moves forward, or sideways, from past missions and the characters in that novel turn out to be friends or colleagues in this plotlin
So loving the journey.
And the k9's. Brilliant
Jeremy York, great narrator as always.

I always set aside a few hours when Quinn releases a new offering . . . and Danger Close was everything I expected.

A rescue mission, a cutting edge of suspense, an inescapable romance; the perfect formula to immerse yourself for a time.

From the moment you open the book, you are immersed, surfacing only when there are no pages left to turn. Quinn's characters never fail to engage, her narrative is no holds barred. There is intrigue, there is risk, it will take your breath away; it will leave you looking for more.

Danger Close - grab it and settle in!

From the moment this book started, I was sucked into the story and all I could do was hold on for dear life. A rescue mission plagued by Murphy’s Law, inconvenient timing, and cupid’s arrow bring Havoc and Jett together. There are elements of this book that remind me of the author’s ‘Cold Red’. In that, it’s primarily the team against the environment, and the human enemies that are also out there are kind of only a secondary concern during a lot of the story. I loved watching as Jett and Havoc developed their partnership under such adverse conditions. I may be only barely finished reading this book, but already I’m desperate to get my hands on whatever comes next.

Very Addictive from page 1!
WOW Fiona Quinn has done it once again! This book grabbed my attention and held on with both hands. The characters are charismatic and the story line pulls you right in and makes you want to continue reading!
Havoc and Jett have a chemistry that you can just see. And some of the situations they find themselves in could give you a little case of the giggles, I know I did!
The only thing I can say that was a disappointment in this book was that there was an end to it LOL! I really can't wait to see what Fiona Quinn comes up with next. I can say that when it comes out I will drop what book I'm reading so that I can read it! Thank you Fiona for such outstanding and phenomenal books that I add to my TBR list right away!

The Chemistry of Us

Jett Vargas is an Asymmetric Warfare Group operator. She's an independent thinker, well trained and educated and so self sufficient, she is scary. Havoc, trained Delta Force Echo sniper and operator, is on a mission to find the elusive Jett. She's not lost, but she needs to be found. And find her he does, with one of more violent "meet cutes" to be written, with one of the most endearing and smart K9's, Digger. This couple can only become one of the most serious "power couples" around. Their abilities, training and resources combine in a very impressive, bittersweet and successful adventure. The chemistry of Jett and Havoc certainly makes it all explosively remarkable.

Jett is one of several solo agents covertly searching K-stan’s mountains for mysterious equipment being used to hijack and mislead American mission but the mountains are also home to drug lords and men following the local custom of kidnapping women to wife.

Havoc’s tagged to retrieve Jett while the rest of his special forces unit’s tasked to do the same for other missing agents. Despite their inauspicious soldier meet, Jett and Havoc have chemistry and companionably search for the agent that should’ve been where Jett was found. A team dog finds Havoc and Jett and leads them to his injured master who may have a lead for Jett’s task.

Aptly titled

So many venues if danger in this story and for our military. Havoc and Jett are a new couple and Jett is new to the series. They are both fierce and I loved how take charge and capable Jett was in some very dangerous situations. The athletic and mental intelligence needed is so clear in these books and I loved how the background and details provided. Joanna White/Lula was very present and I loved her honesty/creativity/and forthright demeanor for the story, the problem and the solution. The ending did have a sad element for the rescue, but overall a great HEA for two amazing characters.

Good but Bittersweet...

Another great book by Ms Quinn. Enjoyed both of the main characters. Loved their interactions with each other and with the others in the story. Lots of action and loads of humor. It was good to catch up on some of the characters from previous episodes. I may have to go back and re-read the series. There was only one part that I wasn't expecting and it brought forth a tear. Hence the bittersweet headline. Overall this was a very good read and don't worry, our protagonists got their HEA!! Thanks, Ms Quinn. I can't wait for your next adventure. 😊

Another fantastic Fiona Quinn book! I always learn a lot reading her books. In this one I learn of the Chesterton’s Fence principle, the Dunning Kruger Effect and the Taoist story of “maybe” and more. I loved the way Havoc and Jet communicated. They had mutual respect for each other and she didn’t need him to save he. I’m also thinking CIA Agent Johnna White is a match maker lol. This book is a definite must read.

Still great storytelling, but...

If Ms. Quinn would cut down on the superfluous details this would have been a very smooth story.
In her favor, the author brought this book to a clear and logical conclusion. In her past 6 or 7 books at least 3 had that, quick out of no where Deus ex Machina ending. The story is just going along then it's over.
This book, however, did build the ending up.

I still recommend this author and series.

Balance some of the dark with the light

Havoc finds more than just the operator he is tasked to find, he does find Jett...a naked Jett! But he also finds numerous animals, more missing people and so many life and death situations.
Packed with adrenaline, danger, risk and temptation this is a great book in the Echo series, I enjoyed joining Havoc, Jett and Digger on this journey and I look forward to more in the Iniquus World.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Another great story! Jett was a strong and resourceful woman and was a fantastic character. Havoc is sent to bring her out. Along the way they are found by Digger who also had his own K9 personality. Just love this author and her characters and look for to every new book. Suspense and action with great characters and romance in a perfect combination. Loved it!!

DNF - I rarely DNF a book & almost never so early but this one not only put me to sleep, it jumped around like the Eveready Bunny. No transitions or segues to alert the reader. Nothing. Nada. I not only couldn't make sense of it, I couldn't get invested in the character.

I enjoyed the different story line that ran within the Zoric theme. The mountains, walnuts, the tile of women being taken off the streets for marriage, the horrific drug issue and our Echo Havoc and AWG Jett. The topping, Digger.
