My Kinky Housemate #5

Awakened Desires

Rate this book
Will reconnecting with my childhood best friend awaken desires?

Seventeen years ago, my life fell apart. By attempting to protect me, my best friend, Rory, accidentally tore us apart. After being in a dark place, I’m getting my life back on track.

A surprising summons to London threatens to throw my life into disarray once more. It’s probably the worst time to reach out to Rory, yet rekindling our friendship could lead to something new. Something stronger.

Rory and his kinky housemates welcome me and open my eyes to things I never thought I’d be interested in. When my life gets more complicated, Rory is there to help. The closer we get, the more I realise I want more than friendship. Will past trauma stop me from having what—or who—I want now?

Awakened Desires is a friends-to-lovers, slow-burn romance with a first-time dad, a bi-sexual awakening, several first experiences, some hurt/comfort, and sensory play. It’s the fifth book in the My Kinky Housemate series. While it can be read as a standalone, it’s better to read it as part of the series.

Trigger warning: one of the main characters is an alcoholic who has been sober for some time and was a victim of abuse in their youth.

I realized as I was reading this why I continue to read and enjoy Colette’s books. Because I know she’s safe. I know I’m going to open one of her books, and regardless of how heavy the topics might be, she always deals with it in healthy, non-problematic ways. She puts a ton of thought into literally everything and I know I’m going to read an emotional MC driven book without unnecessary drama or silly filler.

The themes of this book are definitely heavier than previous ones in this series, so please heed the TW’s. There is an MC still coping with sexual abuse from when he was a teen, a recovering alcoholic, and a side character dealing with post partum depression.

That being said, it all worked. It was slow and sweet and hurt my heart a little. Callan and Rory had some pain to work through but the payoff was worth it. And I am so thankful the way Callan’s ex was dealt with was done in such an honest and healthy way. Most authors would do the opposite with a character like hers.

I just love this series. Every book surprises me. I ccccaaaaannnn’t wait for Hendrix book!!

The theme here was a lot heavier than in the other books, but I loved it nevertheless.

I’ve been looking forward to Rory and Callan’s story, even if I suspected that it might be a bit different than the other books in this series. Callan and Rory have been best friends when they’ve been children/teenagers, but they haven’t seen each other for 17 years after Rory made public that Callan was being abused by his football coach. Thankfully, there are no details given to that dark part, which made it relatively easy to deal with for me.

After that, Callan and his family left town tried to give Callan a fresh start, which didn’t really work as planned. Now, Callan is finally sober after having dealt with alcoholism, and he’s on his way to London to be there for his ex girlfriend who’s about to give birth to their baby.

Trust me, it sounds a lot darker than it actually is, because if there’s one thing this author excels is- she’s creating a safe space for her characters to explore their kinks, or - in this case - find a way to deal with their trauma.

Callan reconnects with Rory, who’s one of the “kinky housemates”. Rory, who’s been in love with his best friend as a teenager, and who never stopped loving him. And it’s wonderful to see them find their way in this slow burn, but at the same time very erotic romance (btw: this book’s “kink” is sensory play, which I loved A LOT more than the pain/marking in the previous book). There’s a lot of hurt/comfort, and the “housemates” all come together to help Callan (and Rory. And the baby) find their footing.

Well deserved 4.5 stars, rounded up because of all the warm fuzzy feelings it gave me.

This was surprisingly good. It had a heavier theme which I was craving after the sugary sweetness of the rest of the series. I’m quite invested now in this group of housemates so was keen for Rory’s story as he is the silent type with hints of a troubled past. I really enjoyed his and Callan’s story. The bi-awakening was nicely done and the intro to kink very realistic. I love imagining the mc’s with their Irish accents.

I especially liked how this author dealt with sex after childhood sexual abuse. It was very respectfully done in an understated way. There is no penetrative sex in this story. The MC CSA survivor also doesn’t engage in any oral intercourse and this is simply and beautifully respected with no fuss.

It’s no secrets that slow burn friends to lovers books are probably my favourite thing to read, I absolutely adore them. And I would consider Colette Davison one of my favourite author of all time, so I was very excited to read this book. This sounds like everything I have ever wanted to read about and I was so excited to read this book. And i’m very happy to report that this book was everything I wanted it to be.

This book was just so delightful and I had the best of time reading it. This was a wonderful story and I really enjoyed every seconds I spent reading it.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion

4.25 stars. Ruined lives, second chances, facing the hurt, yourself, the other, trust, yourself, the other.
It’s a soul-searching story, beautifully written. Thank goodness for the housemates who bring joy and lightness.

After seventeen years without contact Rory gets a call from Callan, he needs a place to stay in London for a week.
Rory is stunned but willing to offer Callan a room.

Callan disappeared from the earth seventeen years ago. Rory blames himself for being the reason.
Now they reconnect and there’s a lot to talk about. What happened in those days, how they both got through these years. There’s enough stuff to talk about. Not about Rory who loved Callan when they were young, Callan doesn’t need to hear that.

Rory’s lifestyle is one of those subjects they talk about and Callan is more than interested to help Rory.
Keep in mind Callan doesn’t know anything about kink, not even what vanilla means. So everything blows him away. When they were young Rory was the protective one, and he still is. Rory is gay and Callan was the straight one. Callan’s heart has other ideas, he’s quite confused.

Circumstances make Callan stay in London, Rory and his housemates are unanimous that he can move into their house as long as needed.
There are some important topics and I think it’s a good case that you discover this yourself. So I’ll keep away from spoiling.

Overall a sweet, kind, and emotional journey, with some very mild BDSM scenes. Leave it to this author to write a solid, rich story with thoroughly developed characters and a great plot.
The awesome housemates are there, of course, I love them all! They are more than supportive, what a great bunch of guys they are, all the love!

And now, two hands on the mouth: Hendrix! Hendrix! Hendrix! Sorry I just can’t wait to read his story!

I adore these housemates so much! It was great seeing them interact more with each other in this story and being so supportive.

I’ve been curious about Rory since he moved in, he’s kind of stayed in the background and seemed a bit mysterious. I’m so happy that he and Callan got a second chance, the connection they had with each other was really something else!

There are some heavier topics in this story, but I felt like they were well handled and written. Callan’s past was heartbreaking, and everything he had going on in the story was intense, but it never got dark.

I love the way Colette writes kink and I always feel safe going into her stories. Her characters are always so sweet and considerate, and I love the dynamics. Rory was fantastic with Callan and the way he introduced him to sensory play was just perfect and so hot…

This series is perfect if you’re looking for a sweeter side of kink and BDSM and I really recommend it! (Also: there were some hints about Hendrix and his story - I’m so curious about the house brat, and I think he’s been hiding things from us… Really looking forward to his book!)

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Awakened Desires is the latest installment in Colette Davison’s My Kinky Housemate series. The books feature a group of kinky men who all share a large house and are actively involved in each other’s stories. So while this book stands alone well on the romance end, I think this series is best enjoyed when familiar with at least some of the other books. Before I go too far, I’ll note some trigger warnings here for post-partum depression, a recovering alcoholic, and past sexual abuse of a minor. Callan’s abuse is never described in any detail, only referred to in the broadest strokes, but take care if this is a sensitive subject for you.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

I absolutely love this series, the books just keep getting better and better. This time it's Rory's turn and maybe we will finially get to know this illusive character, he has been hiding in the background giving small looks into the man he is. It's not till his old friend Callan calls him out of the blue looking for a place to stay while waiting for the birth of his child he just found out about. As these to guys reconnect after being separated for over 17 years they find even though they have both become men nothing has changed between them except the love they have for each other slowly evolves into the possibilty of a love to last a lifetime.

This book... It’s not just friends to lovers. It’s more like “friends to strangers to friends to lovers and beyond, with a bi-awakening” is the premise. Childhood friends, Rory and Callan, haven’t seen each other in 17 years. Callan calls upon Rory for a place to stay during the birth of his child, whom he only recently learned of. Rory lives in a house with several other men, all into a kink of some sort, and many of them are committed couples at this point in the series. But the household agrees that Callan can stay for the time he requested, or much longer if he needs the help. Living in the same house, can Rory and Callan pick up where they left off as friends? Or can they be more?

I loved finally getting to see who Rory was, after all these books of him barely making himself known in the household full of kinky men. Unlike the rest of the characters involved in the series, Callan is new to kink and also dealing with trauma from the sexual abuse he endured as a child.
I adored the sweet way Rory takes care of Callan and the easing into hurt/comfort, and kink in general, and them finding their power dynamics. And there’s a baby to consider, throwing a whole different set of circumstances on top of their friendship and burgeoning romance.

While I can’t wait to read the next book and see Hendrix’s POV and learn all about him, I know it's supposed to be the last (Are you sure we can’t convince you to make more?) and that makes it bittersweet. But all amazing things must come to an end and I just know it’s going to be memorable and wonderful, through and through, like all of these books have been.

AWAKENED DESIRES is the fifth book in the My Kinky Housemate series and this time it's the quiet housemate's turn - Rory! We've had snippets of his story in other books but you don't necessarily have to have read them to get this. When his best friend from the past gets in touch, Rory helps him, even though he's nervous about just how they will be together, considering the reasons they fell out of touch.

One thing I will say straight away is that although this book is just as hot in places as the others, the focus is more on the reconnection between Rory and Cal. They both have to put the past behind them (easier said than done) and trust each other to move forward. It was their reconnection that made this story so absolutely perfect.

The rest of the housemates are there to support both Rory and Cal with whatever is thrown at them. Hendrix, oh my heart, he is killing me. I love him so much and can't wait for his story. He was such a sweetheart in this book. I just hope he doesn't have too much angst to deal with before his HEA!

This story was so touching, romantic, safe, consensual, and incredible. I can't say I've had a favourite in this series as I've thoroughly enjoyed each one as I've read it, but I think that may have to change. Let's see if Hendrix can knock them off the top spot!

Absolutely fantastic and highly recommended by me.

ARC REVIEW
This book was so intense and delicate at the same time.
Rory and Cal were childhood best friends. Cal then lived a huge trauma and his family decided to move away. Cal lost everything and he used alcohol to cope with his trauma.
17 years later, Cal had been sober for years. He found out his ex was pregnant and to go and meet his baby he reconnected to Rory who welcomed in his house (with his other 7 kinky housemates)

I really loved their friendship at first after they met again. The way that Cal trusted Rory, and the way that Rory cherished Cal, it was not because he was in love with him, it was beyond that. And we were not just told that they were best friends, it was very well shown.

Unlike many friends-to-lovers books, Rory's pining and his unrequited love was not the main focus of his thoughts in the first part of the story. His main focus was helping Cal and be who he needed.

The sensory play started in a very delicate way, and it felt naturally connected with their hurt comfort dynamic that was not only due to Cal's new life facts and needs, but had always been their dynamic even when they were kids.

The play was not just an additional kinky element, but something that added one more layer to their comforting relationship, not changing their balance.

But at the same time, it was a hurricane that shook Cal inside and completely changed what the nature of relationship was. It helped Cal exploring his new feelings for Rory. It felt not only relaxing and comforting but also very very sensual.

There's a LOT of consent and things go at Cal's pace. Not only he was discovering he liked Rory, but also he had a huge trauma involving a man and affecting his ability to let go of control.
So nothing is done that makes him uncomfortable.

Rory was Cal's happy place. All his happy memories included Rory. Rory made him happy. But also at the same time Rory belonged to that happy part of his life that's before his trauma.

Their relationship is a slow burn that grows in intensity and is extremely touching and deep by the end.

No relationship angst, they're soulmates.

I didn't read the previous books. While I'm sure it's a much nicer experience, I didn't have any problem, all the other housemates' background stories are explained very well and they play a very active role in the story so it can absolutely be a standalone. I grew fond of all of them.

Content and Trigger Warnings
Alcoholic mc who was sober for 5 years, minor struggles in a couple of situations
Mc sexually abused as a teen, NOT described on page
Postnatal depression (side character)
Light bdsm (sensory play)

This review is gonna be a two-parter because Hendrix. I have things to say about that beautiful bratty housemate. But first, Callan and Rory. This was so sweet and the hurt/comfort was beautiful. This second chance at friendship that turns into more was done really well. We know Callan has trauma from his past and I’m so glad we didn’t get the dirty details, but can infer that he was hurt. The key is so patient with him. Giving him love and care. I loved that the kink wasn’t done to be sexual even though it did trim that direction. I still would have liked more of it though. I feel like as the books go on we get a little less.

I also adored seeing all the boys rally around Rory and Callan. I do so love this found family that has been created and I think we have Hendrix to thank but I’ll get to that. Anyway—this is as another beautiful addition. I am equally screaming for Hendrix’s book and so sad it will be the end.

Okay. That ends the book review portion. This might get a little spoilery so proceed with caution. But I have things to say!! Hendrix. That little sneaky man has made me fall in love with him. I am sooo ready for his book and have to admit that I was super distracted by him. Even the epilogue made me cry because of his reaction. So, back to this sneaky little minx. I am almost positive that he doesn’t have a Sugar Daddy and is independently wealthy. He owns the house and used the opportunity to live with his housemates to form the family he so craves. Which makes me sad for him. I know he’s a brat, but I hope his housemates see beyond that and love him the way he deserves. He’s basically their fairy godmother who brought them all the loves of their lives. Gah. I knew as soon as the guys showed up in the bar they would be for Hendrix. Finding out Ruben is involved makes me so happy!!!

Sigh. I love this found family. Bring on Hendrix’s HEA. I’m ready. And will probably cry because I love him and it’s the end of this series.

I loved Rory and Callan's story!

Awakened Desires is a fantastic story! Friends-to-lovers and second chance stories are two of my favorite romance tropes and this one is wonderful. If you've read the other books in this series, you really won't want to miss this one. Rory and Callan were best friends nearly from birth then Callan was gone without warning and Rory was devastated. Now Callan has called and needs Rory’s help.

This is a sweet story with much lighter kink than the other books. We’ve learned a bit about Rory during the other books in the series but he’s always been the quiet one of all of the housemates. Like the other books, this one is told in first person with chapters alternating between Rory and Callan.

I won’t give away what brings Callan back into Rory’s life but it is life-changing for him. Being back in Rory’s life also ends up being life-changing and it’s no spoiler to say that they become really close. I loved how Rory put his feelings for Callan aside to focus on giving him the help that he needs. All of the housemates prove how wonderful and supportive they are when Callan comes to stay with them for a while.

It's so hard to pick a favorite in this series because they’ve all been great but I really love the gentler tone of this story. The way all of the housemates pull together to help Callan was so wonderful.

We get a teaser for Hendrix’s book at the end of Awakened Desires and I can’t wait to read his book. I just know that it’s going to be very, very entertaining! 😊

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Rory and Callan are so sweet and so perfectly imperfect for each other! Books with best friends to lovers have a tendency to move fast once they realize they are attracted to each other this story has a naturally slow pace that just works. Colette once again created very human characters and an amazing story. I really didn’t want the story to end, fortunately I have every faith they will show up in the next book. 10 out of 10 I would recommend this book…and well any of Colette’s books.

Triger warning: OK, normally I can just ignore the trigger warning on book because it must be pretty graphic and bad for it to bother me. I just discovered that’s not true. While there is no on page explicit descriptions of past abuse there are enough sideways references to piece together the fact. Apparently, my imagination took that and ran with it, and this was just enough to give me a few iffy moments, who knew?

This was a much quieter book, in some ways, than other installments to this series. Rory has never quite fit in with the other housemates, but he comes into his own when confronted with a ghost from his past. Said ghost doesn't just have luggage, he has a whole baggage train. Davison packs a lot into this book with that baggage, for both characters -- and that's before the romantic relationship aspect develops between them, not to mention the power exchange dynamic. Overall, I still enjoyed this story. It more than meets my expectations regarding Davison's writing ability and story and character creation, so I certainly don't encourage fans of the series to skip this one. However, it's definitely a "your mileage may vary" when it comes to the story elements themselves.

Davison has excelled at dropping hints about all the housemates through this series, and we get some great ones regarding Hendrix here. I can't wait to see what is revealed about him in the next book.

Rory and Callan’s story is softer more of a slow burn, and a little more emotional than the others in the series, which perfectly fits these men.

Colette dealt with Callens history in such a delicate way it was easy to feel his pain and his confused thoughts without it taking over. Rory is such a lovely man the care he took with Callum is beautiful. You can really see how much he has always meant to him. Rory and callans story really got under my skin in the best way. The housemates as always were amazing supporting each other and being there to lend a hand whenever it was needed while Rory may have fell he didn’t fit in. It’s clear that he is a part of their little kinky family.

While there is some spicy moment, don’t expect it to be a steamer and kinky as the other box things with these two are much more intimate in other ways, and I absolutely love that I wouldn’t have these two men any other way.

As the series continues and evolves, the books get better and better – and this book did not disappoint. In fact, I think this book is the most intense of the series, bringing the characters to life in more ways than we’ve experienced before. As always, the evolution of the relationship is front and center, but Callan’s trauma and Rory’s baggage are so much more present in all their interactions that the relationship the reader builds with the characters is stronger. Not to mention, the childhood friend aspect connects the two characters on an additional level beyond kink or physical intimacy, and the author balances all of these different connections brilliantly. And we get to find out about one of the most withdrawn characters in the house, Rory!

Emotional in so many ways with a dose of kink and a great story, this book is easily my favorite of the series.

It's official. I love this author. Her way to deal with such important topics... Wow.
Best friends to lovers is one of my favorite trope, and if you add a baby, I'm sold.
Callan & Rory's path is full of obstacles, especially Callan's, and yet he found the courage to move on, to face what life throws at him and do what's best for his family.
Of course, the kinky part of the series is present in this book as well. And I really appreciated how a "supposed" straight, plain vanilla guy get to discovery himself and the sensory play, and isn't afraid of it. In fact, he embraced it all, with questions, yes, but he never once backed out.
The story is definitely intense, sweet, hot. But it also features several heavy issues, so please, be sure to read the TW.

I have loved all the books in this Kinky Housemates series but what I have especially appreciated it that each book is so different and deals with real issues. This book was so beautifully written and I felt all the emotions. It's a friends to lovers and bi-awakening but also dealing with addiction and a traumatic experience and it's about coming coming out on the other side and be happier. Former best friends Rory and callan reconnect when Callan comes to stay with Rory and his roommates. They have a lot to work through but once they start work through things they realise they still have a connection and Callan isn't as straight as he thought he was. I loved how Callans confidence grew with the help of Rory and his wife. I loved reading this but then again, i always enjoy Colette's stories 💜

Being best friends then separated, Callan and Rory lost touched. Life went on and years later when Callan was in need, his old friend came to mind.
Reconnecting gives them a new beginning but with it comes new desires and a new addition to their lives.
This new journey that they find themselves navigating together is filled with emotion, passion and love.

A slower paced story compared to the others in this series, but one that is poignant at times. The characters draw you in with their shared past, exciting new present and hopeful future. I loved how they discovered their own special relationship and found time to be a couple. The kink aspect was a delight and the housemates were a fantastic bunch.
A thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing read.

I don’t even know where to begin. This story was beautiful. It was sweet and sensual and the relationship between Rory and Callan was much softer than past books in this series. At every stage of the book I could truest feel everything both of them were feeling. I can not express how beautiful written this story was. It was definitely less steamy of this series but I felt like that was necessary. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED EVERYTHING about this book. I think everyone should read this book, weather you normally read kink or not, weather you’ve read the rest of the series or not. This is a must read. Absolutely stunning, I could not put this book down.

I've been invested in this amazing series from the start and this installment did not disappoint. I was so ready to get to know more about Rory. His and Callan's journey together, Callan's bi-awakening, them rediscovering their friendship then falling in love and into a family was everything! Best friends to soul mates. This story was emotional, sweet, erotic, and just heart warming, really loved it. Very much looking forward to Hendrix book. It'll be bittersweet for sure, but Colette saved the best for last.

This was just beautiful. Full of hurt/comfort, reconnection and healing. Such a gentle and sweet story as Callan came to terms with his sexuality and an interest in kink. Rory was perfect with him and it was lovely to see the housemates with the baby.
A thank you has to go to the author for making the ex girlfriend Niamh a fully 3 dimensional character. I felt for her, in those exhaustion filled days after a baby and having no support aside from Callan. There was no demonising her for her choices. Just a lot of understanding and I think it was perfectly done.

I’m pretty sure “Oops I Did it Again” is the soundtrack to Colette Davison’s books as she hits it out of the park time and time again. Amongst the kinky housemates, I’ll acknowledge that I was probably least excited about Rory and Callan’s book, AND I WAS SO WRONG. Rory is quiet so he was the most unobtrusive of the roommates, but man oh man he got his time to shine, and shine he did. Like all Davison’s characters, the rich and well-written backstory and relationship between our two MCs gives the story depth with some tension, and serves to juxtapose how awkward Rory and Callan are initially with how intimate their relationship once was - and will be again. I really appreciate that Davison doesn’t go into details about the abuse that ultimately drove them apart, rather explores the impact of losing the friendship. But when Callan volunteers to sub for Rory during sensory play, both begin to discover how this new interaction takes their friendship to another level. Hendrix’s book can’t come fast enough because I can’t get enough of these kinky housemates.

We get to see deeper into several characters in this story of Rory and Callan and their second chance, friends to lovers romance. Callan has been through two life-changing events and Rory is there both times. The first time, his actions led to a separation, but when Callan reaches out again as an adult, Rory and his housemates step up to the plate beautifully. In a time of challenge, love and friendship prove to be a winning combination. This is one of the heavier entries in the series and just might be my favorite.

Awakened Desires is the fifth book in the My Kinky Housemate series by Colette Davison. This book is about Callan and Rory, the last you've met in the previous books in this does. Callan and Rory are childhood best friends who lost contact at age 14. Now 17 years later Callan asks Rory for a place to stay because his ex is living in London and about to give birth....

I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.

I love this series!!!

I am so happy for Rory and Callan. Rory was always so quiet and sad. What Callan suffered affected everyone around him. My heart broke. I wanted to hunt down Coach and…well you can imagine what I’d do. Aidan certainly gained a lot of uncles. There is so much love in that house. I’m worried about Hendrix though. I think he needs his made family. Yes I meant that the way it’s worded lol.

Oh my god, she’s done it again! This is such a sweet, amazing story! Rory and Callan are so completely combustible together.
The whole household these guys live in is just terrific. The landlord rented to an openly kinky groups of guys, but still, it’s completely inclusive and accepting. They get on well and respect each other and their privacy. All while being so open.
Rory is the strong supportive one. He’s the quietest of the housemates, the one least known to the others. ( if what I think is true, that might not be accurate!). He did something he both regrets and stands by. It absolutely needed to be done, but it cost him his best friend.
Callan is the friend that was lost. He went through hell for years, then turned himself around. He was afraid to turn to Rory, but it was his only choice.
It’s great seeing the two guys get to know each other again, let the past go. I love how Callan accepted who Rory is now without question. He’s even open about his curiosity about the different flavors of kink and the experiences Rory offers. It’s realistic that he has to think about things a bit before jumping in.
This whole series has just been wonderful, but I’d expect nothing else from Colette. I can’t wait for Hendrix’s story!!!
