In the forbidden deserts of Yemen, a structure has been found - a buried pyramid - thousands of years older than anything previously known. And indications are, it was buried on purpose. What is discovered inside could prove that we're not alone in the universe. And terrifyingly, after 7000 years, there is a biological obscenity that remains, not yet dead. Ancient writing suggests the pyramid's builders have been taking humans for reasons that will tear at all sanity, and when evidence is found that in remote corners of the world people are still disappearing, the HAWCs are called to action. In a final battle across two worlds - with the fate of the planet at stake - Alex Hunter and his team will be pushed to their very limits as they confront a horrifying and deadly army. In The Well of Hell, bestselling author Greig Beck constructs a tale of blood-curdling, Lovecraftian horror - this latest battle for honor, family and the world cements his status as one of the premier action-horror writers today.
Hi GoodReaders, I’m an Australian author residing in Sydney with my wife, son and a mad Golden Retriever named Jessie. My novels are now available globally, also in Large Print and now in full AUDIO format.
I grew up spending my days surfing at Bondi Beach before entering a career in Information technology which took me around the world. After completing an MBA, i was appointed both an Australasian director of a multinational software company, and tasked with setting up the USA arm of the organisation.
Today, I spend most of my time writing... with plenty left over for surfing.
More information about me and my works can be found at either www.greigbeck.com, or join me on FaceBook (Greig Beck Author).
I love a lot of Beck’s work, but the last few Alex Hunter books have been bad. Really bad. Dark Side of the Moon was tough to finish, and The Well of Hell was nearly impossible. Alex Hunter was developed slowly over several entries in the series, but Josh is just thrown at us with little time to invest. The character development was non-existent for most of this entry in the Alex Hunter series and when it was there it was usually cringe-worthy.
Beck is often overly specific with details, and these dramatic and often pointless details are laughable at times. It’s almost like everything was converted from metric to imperial units making descriptions oddly specific. For example, if something was 10 meters long, in this book it would be, “did you know that average blue whale pectoral fin is 32 feet and 9.701 inches?”. Duh! Who doesn’t know that oddly specific, useless fact?
There are some odd colloquialisms too, mainly inserting the word “damn” or “damned” so often and randomly that it feels like Beck may be paid for each time he writes it.
This is a harsh criticism for an author I adore. I still think the Siberian Incident is one of my favorite sci-if novels of all time, and 75% or so of the Alex Hunter series is pure gold. It’s just that this book really missed the mark for me. It was rushed and Alex never needed to really tap into Alex, if you know what I mean.
Lastly, please Greig, if you ever read this, know that I think your books are immensely entertaining and I am a huge fan. But please, get ANYONE but Sean Mangin to read your books going forward. He. Is. Terrible.
My review seemed to have vanished, so I'll write it again:
The Well of Hell is a book of absolute horror! It was something unimaginable and creepier than all get-out! There is nothing worse than something taking you, using you, and discarding other bits of you while you know you're being used. But you're in limbo.
This Alex Hunter adventure, left me actually thinking of the "what if..."
So as usual, folks find something buried, hidden beneath the earth and think it's okay to go and open it up. The discovery releases a being of unknown horror. Something that's from someplace else and wants to use whatever it can find to take back home for... who knows what! By the time Alex and his team are sent to investigate, many people have already been taken, never to be seen again. For those who carry faith, they continue on, and on, and on and on... it's awful!
Earth has been in danger from many beings, with the Alex and a few members of his elite team of HAWCS, winning to a degree every time. This time, one has to wonder if these beings will return. Especially since they've been visiting for the last 7,000 years!
Such a crazy, fear-inciting novel. One that was different from Greig Beck's previous adventures. I look forward to the next horrific ride he takes me on.
This is book number 10 in the 'Alex Hunter' series and I am never disappointed in these reads, just when I think one book can't be any better, the next comes out and it's absolutely incredible. The level of imagery and non-stop action had me glued to the pages and completely invested in this read. The level of tech hits new heights, the characters are evolving and growing, the bad guys get more sinister and the good guys get more ruthless and Alex... what can I say other than he was truly on the war path and it was phenomenal to read and there are plenty of edge of the seat moments which had me hoping for the best... which isn't guaranteed for anybody. I could never have imagined bad guys like these and the history, the characterisation, the world building, all of it was so well thought of and written and some were quite lovecraftian in their design. This series is one not to be missed and I absolutely can't wait for the authors next book, I'm hoping it's a very short wait as the need to read more is already firmly in place.
Another brilliant addition to the Alex Hunter series, this one centred on the Well of Barhoun also known as the Well of Hell. This time, the mission is incredibly personal for Alex and his HAWCs and it was well executed with lots of twists and turns, and a very interesting ending. There was a lot to unpack here, but the less said the better to avoid spoilers.
Of course I love anything Alex Hunter but this one was a little harder to keep track of. Maybe because I was listening while doing other things. I normally don’t have a problem with doing that. I wonder why he had Josh behaving the way he was.
A buried pyramid has been found in the secret deserts of Yemen – one that appears to be thousands of years older than those of the Egyptians. Ancient writings appear to discuss how beings not from here crafted mind-destroying objects and all too soon various factions around the world are all converging for a fight no one truly understands. Alex Hunter and his team are right in the thick of it – but will this be a fight they can win?
This is an excellent story that ranges over quite a number of different genres and I feel should appeal to a very wide range of readers. There is plenty of action/adventure and an Army/military thrust to a lot of the plotline – especially in the second half of the book where the proverbial excrement hits the fan. There is also quite a healthy dose of science and archaeology related around the monsters and their pyramids and that side to the story, so readers who like those sorts of adventures should also be deeply satisfied. Finally, there is quite a bit of paranormal and Lovecraft kind of things going bump in the night and forces far greater than we mere humans at work. So roll all of that together, add in some tech gizmos and gear and a bunch of excellent characters and it all works together into one fantastic ride of a book.
While this is the tenth book featuring Alex Hunter, I don’t feel you need to have read all of them to follow along in this adventure. Readers who really dislike landing halfway through a series might find there’s a bit of background they need to catch up to on the fly – but as long as the general idea is grasped this actual story is fairly well contained in itself and I found it quite easy to pick up and follow along when I haven’t read the last few books in this series for quite some time. I feel this story might be better appreciated with some prior knowledge of the key players and main points – but for sure it can be picked up by itself and still greatly enjoyed.
Overall, I found this to be an exceptionally plotted story with a number of different and well-woven-together parts. There are a few longer-term story arcs I was happy to catch up on and clearly there’s a general direction where these wider ranging parts to the story is heading. This book can stand well on its own and has a wonderfully fresh plotline with enough realism to it to be just this side of scary because it’s so very believable. A great read and an author I can strongly recommend.
I have been a big fan of this author, and this series, from the beginning. I love the character of Alex Hunter and the fact that he has sprung into action to save his son, really endears me to him. Of course, there is the little matter of the aliens who are trying to wipe out humans as well.....
Joshua Hunter is a 12 year old, chip-off-the-old-block. He has a connection with his father that is other-worldly and that connection comes in very handy when Joshua makes a series of not-so-fabulous decisions. He is 12 though, that happens. Only thing is, his timing is not great, at all.
A bored billionaire is looking for a thrill and he finds it. Has he taken on more than he can handle? And will Alex and his team of HAWCS have to swing into action to help? You betcha. I love Alex's team, all of them. Tough, talented and loyal.
This was a solid book in the series and my heart was racing at various points! So scary but in a good way :)
Author Greig Beck once again writes an epic story spanning generations and worlds. The Well of Hell is an interesting place, to begin with, add Beck's unique ability to create a world others can't imagine and you have an adventure that you will not want to miss. I truly loved the idea for this book but has two big stinkers that ruined from the 5 star course. The first is you made you over played your hand in trying to connect the family arc t Howard’s the finale battle location that I just didn’t like it felt to planned for my liking, and the secound you created an entire sub-love arc for the kid an just really I thought losing his love interest would’ve been my emotional impact but we I didn’t see at all. I hope you work on emotional aspects of the kid.
The book 8 of this series, From Hell gave a brief glimpse of the terrors underneath the earth and an ancient alien hand in mass disappearances across the world. Here in this adventure Greig takes us deep into horrifying territory into an alien planet facing nameless horrors. This story takes Alex and puts him face to face with a species which has been plundering earths inhabitants for millennia. The face-off is brutal and personal and requires unbelievable sacrifices. Tremendous adventure.
There's not a bad book in this series. I don't think this was the best book though, but still really good reading. And I can see where Mr. Beck plans to go with the next by how this one ended. Not sure how he's going to pull it off but looking forward to it. Even though these books can be read as a stand alone I suggest you start at the first book to understand everything.
When extra terrestrials farming the earth's life forms are repelled, the problem becomes insuring they will not return in another 18 year cycle... but only " time will tell". And in the interim, another threat looms, this one created by ourselves and also from space but so very much closer.... Enjoy your brief retirement, Alex Hunter, as it will indeed be a short one despite your best intentions... Please write fast, Mr. Beck!
If you're not a regular reader or this series, you are truly missing out!
Alex Hunter and Greig Beck are at the top of my lists with Dirk Pitt and Clive Cussler.
Once you start reading these books you don't want to stop (Even when the boss at works tells you to.... Lol) The details and story lines capture your attention and pull you right into the story with the characters.
I always enjoy Greig Beck's books.... His blend of Horror and Sci Fi is very satisfying. It's a bit dissapointing that the Arcadians super powers (and Josh's) and the swimmingly limitless ability of tech that the HAWCs have access too are a bit Deus ex machina, but it's not a huge problem as the books are still great fun.
The alternating viewpoints, time and place jumps made this hard to follow. Lots of characters and events to realign the brain that lessened enjoyment of the plot. Military thriller, so if you like that genre, you might like this novel or this series. I also hadn’t read the previous books in the series so that might help readers contextually.
The Well Of Hell was a fun read. As usual, Grieg’s writing was top notch with solid third-person limited and past tense. The narrative was brisk, the chapters and scenes short, and it was loaded with a lot of great characters.
The premise was intriguing and of course, there was a high body count. I had a great time and highly recommend it.
Enjoyable book that got me out of my reading rut. I can usually depend on Greig Beck to deliver an easy rollicking read that kickstarts my reading gears. I like how Joshua starts getting more and more prominent though his development here is a little disturbing. I do feel his thoughts and actions were age appropriate.
This was a good novel, nothing wrong with it, but it didn't captivate me like previous Alex Hunter novel. Whether it was that things were predictable or not I'm not sure. But I loved DOG and the way Alex responded to him, and Joshua is an interesting character.
Great characters, original story and creepy aliens with creepier motivations. The biggest badass of them all, the arcadian is there to whoop ass. Great read, would recommend 100%.
Overall it was a really good book. A lot better than the moon one. The ending felt a bit rushed and there were some plot points that got tied up a bit too quickly for me. But still a great book
Absolutely loved it full of action, gore and fantastic beasts. The Arcadian is at his best again and his HAWC's. It had me on the edge of my seat a few times and It was great that one of my questions was answered. Can't wait to see what mayhem she causes in the next book.
Well Mr Beck comes through again, awesome story. The cast of characters was spot on , especially the Arcadian. I really enjoyed the book, and it had ahold of shard that I couldn't put it down. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction and adventures.
Greig Beck is a master at high octane energy through all of his Alex Hunter books. The characters are more than just action heroes. They are well developed and grow with each book. Greig, please don't ever retire!!
Would certainly make a great series, movies, TV, Vin Diesel. I really enjoy reading Greg Xbox. No Siri it’s books. Can’t wait to get my hands on the next one and read it through my Kindle.
This was an enjoyable story but I am not sure where this storyline is headed. I liked the earlier books but the storyline has gotten more sci-fi as the it progressed. I hope the author can keep things reasonable as the story progresses.
Spoiler alert: Good story Alex and Josh survive, as does Sam and Casey, although Casey will be getting some mech. Story to be continued as Sophia is hitching a ride home from the moon. Can’t wait!
A mystery that has gone unnoticed for hundreds of years, comes to light as people keep going missing and strange portals appear. Alex Hunter and his team are sent in to close the portal, but first Alex needs to save his son.
