Opener: “‘There! Near the trees. Can you see them? They’re the white oryx of Arabia,’ Abdullah says very quietly. Mandy Brown takes some photos of the oryx. She is writing a book about the animals of Arabia. Today she is in the desert with Abdullah. He is an oryx ranger.”
Summary: The White Oryx is a story about Mary Brown, an Australian woman who goes to the Arabian Desert to take photos of the oryx (an endangered animal with long horns). She is writing a book about the animals of Arabia. She visits the desert with Abdullah, an oryx ranger who helps protect the animals. While they are in the desert, they discover that a mother oryx is dead and a young oryx is missing. Abdullah believes that poachers are responsible. Mandy and Abdullah chase the poachers across the desert. With the help of the police, the poachers are caught and the young oryx is rescued.
Verdict: Mandy, a writer, gets embroiled in the chase against poachers when the ranger she is with Abdullah gets a message that there may be poachers in the area. The story is set in the Arabian Desert. The white oryx is one of the animals that can survive there. Largely due to hunting, the white oryx became extinct in the 1970s. Fortunately, there were white oryxes in zoos around the world. The white oryx have recently been reintroduced into the desert but they are not safe from poachers. The story tells of how local rangers help protect the animals.
This book is always special to me. I started tadoku about 14 years ago and this was my first tadoku book. I remember I was very excited when I got started. This book has only 900 words and I think it's good enough for beginners. I like pictures in this book. They are helpful to get images. After finished reading this, I googled "white oryx" and knew they were once endangered. Thanks to people who worked hard for them, they were able to go back to the nature.
