The Babysitter’s Secret

Rate this book
This family is hiding much more than the truth…

Everything I thought I knew about my life is a lie. My mother revealed in her last letter that I’m adopted. But, with her death, any chance of knowing who I really am disappeared. I’ll have to do whatever it takes to find out for myself.

Going back to the house where I was apparently born, I find a family living the life I’d always dreamed of. And when Cecelia, the mother, mistakes me for the new nanny, I seize the chance to move in. Maybe, being in the house every day and night, I will remember more about my childhood…

But this family is not the happy one it appears from the outside. Cecelia is angry, unpredictable, unstable. She is not the mother these children deserve. They are scared of her, and rightly so.

As my memories start to crystalize, I am ever more determined to shelter them from harm. Because history has a horrible way of repeating itself, and I’ll do everything I can to protect these children. But how long can I stay here, undetected, pretending to be someone I’m not? And if the children end up in danger, what will I have to go to save them…?

I love Casey Kelleher's books, and I really enjoyed this one!
This book is so intriguing, following different character POVs and you spend the book trying to connect the two and work out how it all fits together.
It's full of unreliable characters, and had vibes of Sleepless by Megan Goldin. Sleep deprivation really can make you feel like you're losing your mind...
This is brilliantly plotted, and I can't wait to see what the author cones up with next!

I finished this book in under 12 hours, so that kind of says how much I loved it. I literally could not put it down!! This was so cleverly written and pieced together and the twists were shocking. This is definitely a book that will keep you guessing until the very end and questioning constantly who you can trust. Also the ending is guaranteed to shock you! I can’t wait to read more by this author because this was a fantastic thriller.

After finding out that she was adopted upon her mother's death, Sasha shows up at 64 Maple Street the house that she once lived in as a child. She just wants to see if she can have a look around, hoping it will bring back memories of her childhood. To her surprise, when the door opens a frazzled Cecelia assumes that she was the new nanny and welcomes her in. When the opportunity presents herself she doesn't pass it up. Instead, she is introduced to the children and jumps right in to help where she is so desperately needed. The kids love her, and she gets some time to explore the house and the memories it holds. It's a win, win.

Meantime, a patient named Emily is released from a mental hospital after being convicted of a murder 20 years earlier. She is unstable and suspicious of the caregiver that are assigned to athelp her adjust to the outside world.

I really enjoyed this psychological thriller, I finished it in one day as I just couldn't put it down. I didn't find Emily's storyline as enjoyable at first, as I didn't love the characters or how they fit into the book. As this story unfolds with it's dark and surprising turns, the pieces come together to a chilling and unexpected ending

Sasha arrives at a home for a very specific reason. She has clouded memories of her past and she is seeking clarity. However, she is mistaken for the new nanny. Sasha quickly decides to go along with it. As this is a dual POV book, there is also Emily, recently released from a mental institution. With regard to Emily, she is constantly hearing a child crying. However, she appears to be alone in this. In this thrilling book, there must be a connection between Sasha and Emily.

As this story developed, so did Sasha and the situation she was in as she was desperate to unlock the secrets of her past, but also her relationship with the children she suddenly became responsible for. With a clever plot and shocking twists this latest book by Casey Kelleher kept me riveted page after page.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This family is hiding much more than the truth...

This is the second Casey Kelleher thriller I've read and I have to say I am impressed. THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET was as thrilling and as addictive as "Only Child" was and I devoured it in one sitting! A dark and twisted tale, it is a chilling one that will have you questioning who and what to believe as both narrators are unreliable and incredibly complex.

The story starts out with a chilling prologue before moving on to a seemingly random scene and narrative by one of our main characters - Emily. She is unquestionably unreliable from the start with her demeanour, her flashbacks and auditory hallucinations of a crying girl that just only seems to get louder and louder. At first, it appears the girl is left to cry unattended in the flat next door but as the story unfolds it becomes clear the girl is just a delusion that Emily torments herself with. Why? And why is her support worker trying to trick her? Stealing her journal and make her seem crazy? Emily knows she just wants to see her back in the secure unit again.

The next chapter we are introduced to Sasha who turns up to a house she has been given the address to and rings the bell hoping for a glimpse inside the property. The woman who opens the door does so in the midst of a mid-morning panicked rush and assumes that she is the replacement nanny, ushering her in without a second thought or checking her references. Sasha tries to correct her but Cecilia doesn't give her the opportunity and is out the door before the record is set straight. It's OK...she can do this. She can be a nanny. How hard can it be? She wanted the opportunity to glimpse inside this house which holds great significance to her and now she has the perfect opportunity.

Sasha has had a difficult past. Her mother has recently passed away and only then did she discover, via letter her mother left with her solicitor, that she was adopted. Meaning her whole life as she knew it was a lie. But it's hardly surprising as she never really fit in anyway. So now she has in her hand the address for the house in which she had spent her early years...before she was adopted...and she is granted to perfect opportunity to find some connection with the now renovated house. At first, she sees nothing but clean lines and new furnishings. But little by little, memories begin to resurface...and Sasha starts to wonder if these are just dreams or memories?

This is indeed a dark and even disturbing tale. Chilling even. But it is also tinged with sadness. It can also be said that there is a child abuse trigger as well as mental illness. Both narrators are unreliable and complex and the reader can be excused for thinking how the two storylines intersect. But be patient...all will be revealed in due course.

THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET is a twisted tale of secrets and revenge. I was hooked from the very first page and didn't stop until I flipped the very last at the end, devouring the book in just five hours. I was invested from the beginning wanting to know who was gaslighting who and why and how the stories were connected. And my little grey cells were firing all their synapses as I slowly pieced the puzzle together. I saw the twists coming before they were revealed but I didn't care...I'm here for the ride and the entertainment value! The final twist was a surprise but I thought it kind of spoilt it in the end and should have been left as it was. But it was still a thrilling read and that I enjoyed every minute of!

I would like to thank #CaseyKelleher, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheBabysittersSecret in exchange for an honest review.

PUBLICATION DAY: May 24, 2023

This is the story of two different women, Sasha and Emily. One is searching for answers, and one is hiding from them. But how are their stories related? Sasha stumbles into a babysitting job when she is mistaken by the homeowner for the replacement nanny. Rather than tell the truth, Sasha sees it as an opportunity to search the house for clues about a childhood that remains fuzzy. Emily has been released from a psych unit, and is still under daily nursing care, but what are the memories that plague her so? And are past traumas what these women have in common?

PROS and CONS:
Unreliable narrators are tricky for me - they do add to the suspense of a book, when the reader is not sure whether to trust what is going on or not. But at the same time, they can be a bit frustrating when you just want to know what’s real! The first part of the book is a bit slow, but it does pick up a lot near the end. It was a quick read and the ending took a bit of a twist to spice things up.

READ IT?
If you’re looking for…domestic suspense with an unreliable narrator, then this one’s for you!

Sasha has returned to the house where she was born, looking for answers about her early life. When she arrives, harried working mom Cecelia mistakes Sasha for the new nanny she’s been expecting. Rather than correcting her, Sasha sees her chance to move in and gain unfettered access to the house. Before long, it seems like living there is sparking Sasha’s buried memories to surface.

Sasha’s story alternates with Emily’s POV. Emily is recently released from a psychiatric hospital. She tries to act like she’s doing better, but she can’t stop hearing a little girl crying day and night. Her carers Louise and Charlotte don’t hear the little girl, but she’s real to Emily. Charlotte treats her kindly, but Emily is convinced Louise is trying to sabotage her recovery.

I love a multiple POV story, and this one intrigued me from the get-go because Sasha and Emily didn’t appear to have any connection to each other and I couldn’t wait to see how their stories would come together. I was invested in the mystery of what happened in Sasha’s childhood home, as it was obviously horrible. The twists are shocking and dark, and I am here for it!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.

I love this authors books she never disapoints all her books are good but her psychological ones are just so gripping knows how to draw you in to her books. Emily is still hearing the girl crying she has left the psychiatric unit. and now in a flat with the help of Louise and Charlotte. Emily is to scared to tell that the girl is still crying as she not want to go back to the clinic and she is scared of Louise. Sasha want to go back to 64 maple street. to search for her to remember some of lost years that she
holds no memories of. Ceceila opens the door to her and thinks she is from the agency, so Sasha fib s and starts looking after Annabelle and Zachery. how this story unfolds is just so good you won't want to stop reading once you start this book very twisty and gripping a bit creepy in parts so recommend this authors books.

Whoa! Oh Wow! I just love this authors work.

This family is hiding much more than the truth.

A truly addictive twisted stand alone novel, once again has hit me as unputdownable!

What has she done?
Emily Pickett once again listening to the roaring crying baby next door.
Is the baby ok? is the mother struggling? should she check? No she popped two sleeping pills she must get some sleep.

Sasha Hammond arrives at 64 maple Street is this the right house? a big Victorian house she expected a squalor and rings the copper bell thinking of the newspaper article, memories of forgotten years came flooding back this is where it all started. The door is answered by flustered single mother Cecelia Clarke and before Sasha can get a word in edge ways she becomes the new nanny the house use to be a hostel for vulnerable women and has history.
Sasha needs answers and they lie in this house.

Such a dark physical story. chapter after chapter, as I read I craved more more more with tears falling as my heart pounded, I seriously recommend this book as a must read on your pile, two dangerous women characters hiding the most despicable secret ever imagined.
Absolutely fantastic right to the very end. I need a large glass of red wine now.

Well this was a bit of a shocker! Casey Kelleher proves she’s once again able to deliver a twisty thriller that can surprise her readers with a jaw dropping and unforgettable story. I loved the dual POV of the characters-both of whom had secrets hidden in their pasts but how were they connected and what would happen when their lives collided? And trust me-you are never going to guess!!!!! I’m pretty good with plot twists and very few authors surprise me but I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING! So clever and genuinely shocking so I absolutely loved it!

This is a great psychological thriller that really had me hooked.
Sasha goes back to her childhood home as she wants to see if she can find out more about her past. When the door is answered she’s ushered inside and thanked for coming at such short notice. Sasha is confused but says nothing and soon she is the live in babysitter of two children.
She thinks she’ll do it for one day just to find out about the house but soon she’s enjoying her time with the children.
There’s also chapters about Emily who is struggling with her mental health and hears a crying child all the time.
It all becomes clear later in the book but that’s about all I can say without spoiling it for you.
This is a gripping read that had me racing through the pages. A great psychological thriller that I’d highly recommend.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The Babysitter’s Secret is a good read, just not a great one.
Sasha knocks on the door of a home from her past.
Wanting to piece together memories she continues to have.
Cecelia Clarke answers the door and mistakes Sasha for the new nanny.
Sasha takes this as a chance to find answers and goes with it.
Finding out the truth will have its consequences even if danger is among the answers.
This is an ok, slightly above average but nothing to write home about.
I didn’t mind some of the plot but felt that it was a little disjointed.
I also found that it was a little over the top and was hoping that it was going to get better as it progressed.
Told through two point of views, this dark story with a twist or two and an ending that’s not bad.

What would you do if you invited a secretly dangerous person into your house? What if they were going to take care of your children? The Baby Sitter's Secret explores what happens when trauma meets curiosity. This multi-viewpoint story takes you on a wild ride to figure out who is telling the truth. Would you believe the woman caring for your children or should you trust your gut instinct? You'll find yourself second-guessing your own intuition as well.

I was immediately hooked on this one! However, around 60-70%, it started to fall flat. Around that time I also felt like I was missing essential details...? I looooove an unreliable narrator! And this one is full of them. The entire storyline is wild and I was hoping for an even more outlandish ending. I'm not mad at the way it ended, I was just really hoping for something more. If you are looking for something that will keep you guessing and changing your mind every 10 seconds, check this one out!

Thank you, NetGalley for an early e-copy of The Babysitter’s Secret by Casey Kelleher in exchange for an honest review.

I was approved for this book in March, started it right away, and then promptly put it back down after only reading the prologue. It disturbed me to my core and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to handle the content. I didn’t pick it back up again until pub day.

And I’m so glad I gave it another chance. Once I pushed past the prologue, I could not put this book down. It blew me away. The Babysitter’s Secret is dark, twisty, and addictive.

I loved how the storylines connected in the end. I totally thought I had the ending figured out, but I didn’t. In fact, there was one twist I didn’t see coming at all. It’s hard to completely blindside me like that, but Kelleher did it, and in such a flawless way.

I will absolutely be reading more from this author. The Babysitter’s Secret is out now and on Kindle Unlimited.

So first thing I just want to say first, is that I absolutely love Casey Kelleher previous books, her gritty crime ones as they were real page turners and addictively good stories. But now Casey has started writing Thriller books, which is somewhat of a change.

So anyway this latest book of Casey’s, I really wanted to love this book more than I actually did. Throughout the story there are two stories being played out, both in present but two very different characters. It took a lot longer than usual for the two different characters stories to be linked with each other, so you spend pretty much the whole book trying to figure out how these two characters are linked together and it doesn’t become completely clear until about the 75% mark and after that point it becomes pretty intense and dark. So that dampened my enjoyment somewhat. Come the end there were a couple of twists, one of which I’d already guessed but then there was one I hadn’t.

The story and characters are well written and it’s a pretty unique story plot if I do say so myself, but it is a slow burner and one of the reasons I chose this book was because it was under 300 pages so thought I’d get through it quickly but that was not the case. I wasn’t captivated enough by the story which meant I was easily distracted by other stuff and so kept putting the book down.

Trigger alerts for anyone wanting to read this book: there is occurrences of child abuse and mental health issues.

A case of mistaken identity changes Sasha’s life. She went looking for answers and found herself a job, looking after someone else’s children. Children craving attention from their busy mum. But Sasha can give them that attention.

On the flip side of this story is Emily. I felt sorry for her as she’s got some serious problems and the support she’s getting isn’t the best – Louise made my blood boil at her attitude. Emily’s narrative is interesting, all the characters’ narratives are but Emily’s is top of the pile. I didn’t know what to make of her – how reliable is this girl?!

I thought I was clever and had worked out where Kelleher was taking me but no, she’d sent me off on a different direction i hadn’t considered! By switching the perspectives between characters, Kelleher definitely kept me on my toes!

The Babysitter’s Secret is a twisted thriller , which is what I’ve come to expect from the mind of Kelleher. She masterfully plaits together a combination of story threads to keep you guessing, blindsiding you with red herrings before pulling back the curtain to reveal the final scene to shock you. The Babysitter’s Secret is blooming brilliant!

Wow this book is a major head twist. Just when you think you know what happened it’s all turned on its head and you never know what happened. We follow Sasha who in a case of a misunderstanding becomes a babysitter for Cecelia in a house that Sasha seems to have some deeply buried memories of. Along side this story we follow Emily who has been released from a secure hospital after committing an unspeakable app and as she tries to settle back into society her past seems to not want to let her go. As this story weaves into a dark conclusion it appears no one is completely who they say they are. I won’t spoil this one just read it as you won’t be disappointed

A rather complex, edge of your seat, wondering what the heck is going on thriller. This one will keep you turning pages as more is revealed and things quickly spiral out of control, Each time another piece falls into place, you have more of those "oh no" moments, until it all comes down to a spectacularly horrifying train crash you can't look away from.

First, I want to thank Casey Kelleher, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

WOWZERS!!! The Babysitter surely had a BIG secret that she was hiding in Casey Kelleher’s new psychological thriller The Babysitter’s Secret! You will be hooked from the beginning of his book as you will be on the edge of your seat with all the unexpected twists! You are going to want to put this book on your TBR list for sure!

I will say Annabelle and Zachary were so adorable and at times pulled on my heartstrings! However, there was one climatic scene in this book where I was literally going insane!! I was screaming at my Kindle as I could not believe what was happening! I wanted to literally jump into the book and stop the scene from happening.

The ending was explosive! All the secrets that were kept hidden came to light in big way.

My Review:
Wow!!!!! Loved!!!!! Shocked!!!!! Speechless!!!!! Gripping!!!!! These are just a few words that I would use to describe this fabulous read. I have read many of this authors books but this one has to be my favorite so far. So where to begin with this one. Ok let me start off with you don’t know what the heck is going on for most of the book until you get closer to that awesome ending. Then you are like OMG it all makes sense but in such a good way. This author did such a great job with writing this book that way. It kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time. You kept waiting for the bomb to be dropped and when it finally did wow, just wow. I can’t say enough good things about this book and author. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Stop for a moment and think of the best holiday you've ever been on in your life.

I'm lucky enough to have several to choose from. I've visited Prince Edward Island in Canada, and while some parts of it are heavily modernised and touristy, other parts are just as beautiful and unspoilt as they were in the time of Anne of Green Gables. I immediately followed that up with a visit to Niagara Falls. I've done a self-drive tour of Croatia, taking in Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb, with a couple of breaks for swimming in the sea of Vis Island and under waterfalls at Krka National Park. I've been scuba diving in the Caribbean, the Red Sea and Malta and spent Hogmanay in Edinburgh. Yes, you need to be prepared for filthy weather. But if you want atmosphere, this is where it's at.

But choosing my favourite holiday of all? This was so easy as to involve no thought at all: the Swiss Alps.

I first read about the Jungfrau region, sandwiched between Interlaken and the ten-mile-long Aletsch glacier, when I was a student and pretty much from that point on, dreamed that one day I'd visit in a motorhome. About 20 years later, I finally visited the area in an old caravan, which, actually was much better. But no words, or photographs can describe how beautiful it is. Practically within walking distance of each other are three snow-capped mountains, separated by beautiful lush green valleys and, if my memory serves me correctly, seventy-something waterfalls. The result is that, no matter where you are and whichever direction you look in, there is something to wow you. I think I said at the time that if I were to die and find that heaven was not all it was cracked up to be, I'd ask God if I could be sent back to Switzerland, in my caravan instead. I've been on other holidays that were wonderful. This one was special.

This brings me nicely to I'll Never Tell, which was the first book I read by Casey Kelleher. It's a psychological thriller ... and yet it's so much more than that. Difficult issues are dealt with so sensitively, so compassionately and yet so powerfully and in such a well-plotted storyline that it blew my mind to smithereens. The only problem is that when I read her next book, Only Child, I couldn't help but use I'll Never Tell as a benchmark. And that's an incredibly high benchmark for Casey to have set.

And now, I'm about to do the same thing again with The Baby Sitter's Secret. But in my defence, I could hardly help it after reading the first two chapters of this book which, like in I'll Never Tell, feature a young woman standing outside her childhood home for the first time in years and trying to reconcile its current appearance with her memories of its past. This absolutely isn't a bad thing, in the same way that it wouldn't be a bad thing if your husband reminded you a bit of Ryan Reynolds. But I'm not completely sure if it's a good thing either. It's just a thing, and compared to how I felt about the rest of the book, it still feels like a slight negative.

I'm going to continue with the quibbles in order to get them all out of the way in one hit. The way in which the young woman in question, Sasha Hammond is able to gain access to the house, not just on the day but for some time thereafter relies on one heck of a coincidence. And I also have to say that I guessed one of the plot twists. Which wouldn't be such an issue were it not for the blurb saying - confidently and in bold letters - that this could never happen.

Everything else, though: wow.

This book takes a familiar concept - that of the unreliable narrator - and raises it to a new height. We are told seemingly separate stories from the seemingly unconnected Sasha and Emily. We want to sympathise with them both, and even take their side, and yet something is telling us to doubt every word that either of them say.

Even as the story changes and a key revelation - and I hadn't seen that one coming - is given, that feeling of doubt continues right to the end of the book. I said I had guessed one of the plot twists: what I meant was that I had guessed the solution that was offered. But I was still left questioning whether it was true. And whether it's true or not makes the difference between leaving the reader satisfied, and leaving them horrified. It's fantastic.

I also admired the portrayal of Cecilia. Her situation - that of feeling overwhelmed as she tries to juggle being a single mum, going through the process of a painful divorce, with her work just at the time that her own business has taken off and demands too much of her attention, is one that will have all of us feeling for her in some way. But she's also a study into how a moment of inattention, brought on by stress, can lead to a terrible decision being made. Viewed in the cold light of day, what she does is unthinkable. But in the circumstances, it's so understandable.

Make no mistake: The Babysitter's Secret is a fabulous book. If I may bring holidays back into it again, it's like north-west Scotland. Yes, a few tiny aspects of the plot are irritating in the way that Scotland's midges are irritating, but they pale into insignificance. Overall, it's wonderful and memorable.

I'll Never Tell, though, is something else. That's Switzerland.

My first book by the UK author Casey Kelleher and looking forward to reading more! Her latest, THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET — is a dark, unsettling, and creepy psychological thriller with unreliable narrators—you are not sure whom to trust —to the twisty jaw-dropping conclusion.

The suspense thriller holds its secrets well and packs a concluding wallop!

Sasha Hammond's adoptive mother has died. She inherited everything, including a letter stating she was adopted.

Emily Pickett is a patient in a mental hospital. We get flashbacks from 20 years of her constantly hearing a little girl crying. She stays medicated to drown out the voices and crying. She is unstable and suspicious of the caregivers. Some evil, mean, and one a guardian angel. She is being released presently, twenty years later.

Told from two alternating POVs: Sasha and Emily.

Sasha tracks down her childhood home at 64 Maple Street. She has dark flashes of fractured memory that float around inside her head. She cannot keep ignoring them. She hopes it will trigger the memories she has forgotten in this house.

Memories of things that had happened in her life before. Those forgotten years. She will get her answers inside these walls of the house where it all started. Do we ever really leave the past behind?

Upon arrival at the house, a woman Cecelia Clark (the mother), answers the door and mistakes Sasha for the new nanny. She plays along and decides this will allow her to check out the house.

The two children are Annabelle and Zachery. The single mom is frazzled and distracted with work and has no time for the children. Her ex-husband, Henry, left them for another woman.

Sasha feels sorry for the children and takes them under her wing. Slowly she starts remembering things that happened in the house and to her brother. She remembers being locked in a cupboard. Her brother drowned, and someone was burying him. Then her adoptive mom saved her.

Then Sasah's mind starts returning to the house's darkness. Her mind is blurred from past to present. Something happens in the present to Zachery, and now the children do not like or trust her. She begins drugging them and the mother why she figures things out.

Emily and Sasha connect at the house for an explosive, nail-biting, heart-pounding game of cat and mouse— from the home to the tree house, which one will be left alive.

As a reader, you are dying to see how the two storylines connect and which is telling the truth. Good or evil? These are some wacky disturbing characters. The treehouse scene was INTENSE!

The story flip flops and your loyalties change, then BAM, the author throws a wickedly evil twist at the end, leaving you shaking your head where nothing or no one is as they appear!

Kelleher skillfully maintains the suspense through well-timed extended flashbacks and plenty of shocking twists.

Harrowing and intense―a vivid look at the long repercussions of violent crime. A chilling, twisted tale of secrets, gaslighting, and revenge, with innocent victims, caught up and served as collateral damage.

If you like twisty, dark, gritty, and disturbing domestic thrillers with complex unreliable narrators and a lot of drama, THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET is for you! For fans of authors—Freida McFadden, Emily Shiner, Miranda Rijks, K.L. Slater, and Daniel Hurst.
