After thirteen-year-old Anna Armstrong loses her parents in an accident, she is sent to live on her Uncle Jack’s farm. She is despondent, but on her first night there, she is awoken by strange lights originating from a nearby lake. She sets out to investigate—and the skies suddenly erupt in a thunderous explosion.

That’s when Anna sees a mysterious woman floating across the lake.

She discovers Mara—the woman on the lake—is a time traveler on the run from frightening bone-faced alien creatures. She also learns that time travel has consequences. Mara’s time-hopping escape has broken the universe, opening wormholes throughout the valley, each leading to another world.

Now, Mara needs Anna’s help—together, they must use science to track down the aliens and close the portals before anything escapes. But can they figure out how before Mara’s very existence is erased forever?

Girl Out of Time is a thrilling adventure of two unlikely friends who team up to take on a world of aliens, wormholes, and time travel—to save themselves and, possibly, the entire planet.

In a Nutshell: An intelligent and imaginative sci-fi read for middle graders. Covers some thoughtful themes. A bit too long for the target age group but the fast pace and thrilling action-adventures compensate for the length.

Story Synopsis:
Anna Armstrong has always been a space aficionado. After her parents pass away unexpectedly, she is sent to live with her Uncle Jack on his farm, which is not the kind of farm you might imagine.
On her first night there, Anna sees some strange lights and a mysterious woman floating above the lake at the back of the house. Thus begins Anna’s thrilling adventure, courtesy Mara, the time traveller from the future who seems to be hiding from something, or someone. Mara needs Anna’s help in tracking some wormholes, but little do they know that an ‘unearthly’ visitor has already landed in their vicinity.

Where the book worked for me:
👽 The story stays true to its protagonist’s age. Anna is a seventh grader, and she acts like one, though at a much higher intellectual level. She is impulsive, curious, stubborn, but also courageous and loyal. She makes for a complex and well-rounded lead character. The parallel lead, Mara, is a wonderful mentor-cum-friend to Anna, allowing Anna to learn from her mistakes and allow her curiosity to lead her the right way. I loved their bond.

👽 The plot includes many complex scientific concepts such as wormholes, gravitational pull, and artificial intelligence. However, it doesn't treat its readers as stupid by spoon-feeding them every explanation, but provides just enough info to understand the scene and trusts its young readers to decipher it correctly. Many YA authors would do well to learn from this approach.

👽 Thought-provoking topics such as sustainable farming techniques, the importance of food and farmers, climate change and its impact, and conservation of natural resources are balanced alongside more regular MG staples such as bullying, supportive friendships, and first crushes. There are also some brief philosophical points such as on actions vs. consequences. While I could have done without the crush factor (it didn’t add much to the story and wasn’t even explored in detail), the rest of the themes are handled well.

👽 The imagery is amazing. Every scene is so vividly written that it is not at all difficult to visualise the events, even when they are out of this world, literally. The descriptive writing is one of the best features of this plot. I still can’t believe the world-building came from a debut novelist’s pen… errrr… laptop.

👽 It was a lot of fun to read about the futuristic elements in Mara’s arc. They did feel a tad too farfetched to be practically possible just a century ahead, but hey, this is science ‘fiction’. We go with the flow!

👽 While the content is episodic at times, there are enough of action and adventurous sequences to keep us hooked. Even during moments of lull, the book doesn’t reduce the pacing. This is especially helpful because the book is quite lengthy at 368 pages.

👽 Plus points for having two well-sketched female protagonists in a sci-fi story, all the more relevant as the author is a man. This is so rare an occurrence!

Where the book could have worked better for me:
👾 The secondary characters, maybe except for Jack, don’t get enough detailing. Fiona and Lulu, being Anna’s besties, could have had a much greater role to play in the plot, but we barely get to know them. Scout gets a somewhat better deal, but why he is looked down upon and teased so much by his friends, we never know properly.

👾 Mara’s backstory wasn’t too convincing. I was hoping for a better explanation.

All in all, this was a fun yet intense middle-grade sci-fi novel. It will work even for teens and possibly for adult readers too, as long as they go in with the right expectations.

I can’t put my finger on the reason, but somehow, that cover, though striking, doesn’t convey ‘middle-grade’ to me. I began this book expecting a regular sci-fi story. Luckily, I was able to adapt to the right age group soon. (Being a regular children’s book reader helps.)

The plot is quite ambitious for a debut work, but the author uses his credentials well to provide us with an entertainer. Definitely recommend this to youngsters who enjoy sci-fi adventures.

Though the story ties up neatly at the end, something tells me that we shall be seeing more of Anna and Mara in future. I hope my gut feel is right. If there is indeed a sequel, it will definitely hop onto my reading list.

4.25 stars.

‘Girl Out of Time’ is the most charming book I have read recently. It bundles some very loveable characters as part of a nice sci-fi story.

Anna in a tragic turn of events loses both her parents in an accident. Her Aunt Claire cares for her briefly, and she later moves in with her Uncle Jack. Jack is an agricultural scientist & farmer who is working on building new age crops in his farm in collaboration with Dr Gloria. Anna grows to love the town and the farm. She also adjusts well to her school and makes a few friends, many of whom appreciate her intellectual abilities.

Anna keenly observes some strange atmospheric phenomenon at night. Her pursuits lead her to Mara, a lady who has come here from the future. Mara lives a secluded life which she explains is because she has found that interaction with other people tends to change the timeline of events with undesirable effects. The two become inseparable friends and Anna also introduces Mara after a while to Jack as her teacher. Mara brings future tech with her - anti-gravity shoes which help elevation/flying, a personal advanced communicator iCom and an AI assistant – SID. Mara tells Anna about a wormhole which has opened up and an excited Anna coaxes her to allow her to travel to the wormhole and see other worlds. They also realize that there is an alien life form which is stuck on Earth after arriving accidentally via the wormhole. Mara also has some ‘Others’ chasing her across time and she is not sure how long she can evade them and stay safe.

The writing is very good and the descriptions of the farm, atmospheric events evoke excellent visual imagery. Anna & Mara are absolutely lovely characters, as also are Jack and Anna’s friends. The book refers to many concepts you would find in mainstream science fiction books but does not devote much space in context setting to make it appear to be credible science. While I suppose middle graders will also appreciate it, it is ideal reading for teens and well – also adults!. This is a slightly bigger book than I would have expected for the storyline, but the pace is very good, and I was engrossed from start to finish.

A lovely book which I am sure most will enjoy reading! Strongly recommended!

My rating: 4.5 / 5.

Exciting story, great characters and very easy to read. Writing style is fabulous. Visualized everything even things that only exist in writers imagination…..or really exist….you decide. Can definitely see a 2nd book & I can’t wait to see where it takes us. Thank you so much to Clyde Boyer and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC!

This took me a while to get into. I realized that I didn’t really process anything happening until at least a third of the way in … and then I didn’t care enough to finish it whoops. This book wasn’t for me so feel free to read it if it’s your interest.

Such a fun and captivating science fiction/fantasy story. I really enjoyed the friendship between Anna and Mara and the unbridled adventurous nature of the central figure, Anna. Just when I thought the story might become predictable, the author surprised me with unexpected twists and turns that kept me wanting to read more.

I am shocked that this is a breakout book for Clyde Boyer. He writes like a seasoned writer and maintains constant flow throughout the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the middle school age range and up, and I look forward to a sequel!

Girl Out of Time was a refreshing change to the recycled young adult plots and characters. I teach college composition, so I am fairly "picky" when it comes to style and character development.
I also would say I'm ADHD by nature, so the first quality that drew me to this book was the terse writing style. The author has a natural sense of gauging his audience's attention span and uses many stylistic devices to keep them hooked.
I also appreciated the way the author gives insights into the characters that go beyond the cliche and shallow. The truth is: Many young adults are brilliantly minded, creative, forward-thinking human beings. And this book seems to truly appreciate that. The book is highly readable without talking down to readers.
This is an intelligent story with heartfelt characters; readers who may not have found their niche may well find elements that speak to them. I am looking forward to the next book! Mr. Boyer has clearly tapped into the headspace of "forgotten" imaginative, intellectual young adults that want to have their minds challenged and their spirits awakened.
I highly recommend this book.

Girl Out of Time by Clyde Boyer was more than what I was expecting. I devoured it.

Anna and even Mara's adventure was fun, exciting and just what I needed.
This was a wonderfully written book and I especially loved the dialogue and the unexpected events.
Talk about science, aliens, portals/time travel and wormholes the power of friendship and working together with a little touch of mystery this is one book I can't wait to get for my 13 yr old nephew.
Two girls out tonsave the planet, I'm sure most Jr High kids will connect with these characters and enjoy this story just as much as I did.
I had the best time being sucked into this world.
And I will definitely be adding Boyer to my list for the kids in the future.

Thirteen-year-old Anna loses her parents in an accident and is sent to live with her uncle on his farm. With no purpose and hope, days stretch out into nothingness. Until one night, the sky explodes in thunder. That’s when she meets Mara, a time traveller from the future. Mara needs Anna’s help because her time-travelling has broken the universe, opening wormholes that lead to other worlds. Resulting in a “thrilling adventure of two unlikely friends teaming up to take on a world of aliens, wormholes, and time travel—to save themselves and, possibly, the entire planet.”

And I agree with this description. Girl Out of Time was indeed a thrilling adventure, but not just that. It also was a heartwarming story of friendship. A friendship that seemed unlikely, but bloomed throughout their journey. And that made this book so worth it. I was rooting for Mara to overcome her fears and fight for what she loves. And also for Anna because she needed this special connection after she had lost everything.

On top of all that, we are faced with the reality we live in. Our planet is sick, and if we don’t do something quickly, it will die. This story shows possible futures for us and that we need to work hard to make the best future possible.

Even though I prefer standalone books, I wished this one had a sequel. At this point, there is no talk about it, but who knows what the future holds.

I got this from my library as a "blind date book" during February and was pleasantly surprised. I loved this so much! I was always rooting for Anna. Even though the ending is kind of sad I still enjoyed it a lot! There are some very emotional parts but it adds needed layers to the plot: *Cried multiple times*

Loved it!

Read via NetGalley.

This is such a unique story. I won’t summarise the plot as the synopsis covers it pretty well — instead, let’s get into what makes it so good!

Anna and Mara are wonderfully written characters. I loved their dynamic and their character development. Other characters weren’t quite so vividly depicted, but for a middle grade novel, that makes sense — I know that when I was twelve or so, I’d really only have been interested in the leads.

I also liked the fact that the writing style was accessible for a young audience without talking down to them. It’s a fine line to walk, but the author definitely makes it work!

This is a lovely standalone, but I’d read a sequel, no question!

It was a good story the start was very slow in my opinion but it really picked up when Ana told her new friends about the lights and they decided to check it out but that was after she got woken up by two men with top hats out on the fields that looked like they had headlights for eyes but they were actually galaxies but Ana thought it was just a dream. Than one night when she’s alone she goes to the woods where they found the lights and in the middle of the lake in the woods lies an invisible wall that Ana discovers than she sees a woman (the same woman she saw the other night with her friends that looked like a ghost flouting about the ground) but before that a flying metal sphere that put lights on her than this woman tries to erase Ana’s memories but fails they start talking and she tells her she is from the future and will allow her 15 minutes worth of questions about anything from the future than after that she needs to leave and forget everything about her and this place so Ana asks very interesting questions than Mara (the futuristic woman) tells her the very first time she time traveled (she invented it btw) once she came back no one remembered her not even her parents she never excited in her original future than the same skeleton men that Ana saw she sees too in the future following her raising its hand to her so she escapes to different worlds in order to not be caught by them but once she finally thinks she has found a same world/place they pop up again and the wormholes too wormholes that once Ana knows tells her to train her so they can team up and take the wormholes from other worlds away from this one she reluctantly agrees but Ana has to keep this a secret from everyone than comes her training a lot of weeks of hard work push ups, balancing, running and all of this was so Ana could be ready to use her Mara’s futuristic technology the flying boots, the awesome bracelet that combined with her glasses allowed to see very far away and hear conversations, the invisibility cloak that Ana could activate with her wrist (I think), and the hand propulsers than with hitting her wrist three times they activate opening and closing her hands builds up the amount and opening them releases it and it can also incapacitate with like a big flash than they train with these gadgets Ana becoming better and better than they play tag to practice her balance with the boots but the other wormholes something went through it to this world that was a very dark figure with long arms and short body that loves the dark so Ana and Mara try to find and bring back to its world one that Ana saw with its Black Sea, curved shaped beaches, very tall humongous trees and humongous animals at see and also outside jelly fishes that cure injuries. So the town knows about this creature because of a woman she took a picture of it than Tyler scouts brother wants to kill it because he has a troubled childhood (same old stuff) he even almost burns Scout’s belly (again) right in front of his friends but Ana used the air prupolser to push him off, than they hear the same creature was sighted at a pet warehouse than Ana and Mara pull up they chase the creature Mara is not on time to help Ana she gets grabbed by the creature since she thought it was a good idea to get unprotected from her futuristic gear than the thing attaches to her giving her visions of its world and that it wants to go back but the kid who is the brother of one of her friends saw her and the thing scaped. Than they found it running from Tyler and his pursuit of it after a flipping of cars and flying and all of that Mara tells Tyler to accept something coming in the future since he’s life is so messed up right now it’s his best shot to make it better and he does. Than they throw the alien back through the wormhole to its world but Ana gets stuck there that’s where she sees that the gravity is super heavy in that world and that it has two suns (or one and sun and a planet very close to it) anyway she gets healed by the jelly fish and sent back to her world by the dark creatures. Then Mara and uncle Jack have a very funny date, they see the birth of a cow, and the very important meeting comes up in a couple of weeks of the farmers. Ana gets ready and is nervous because she knows she’ll be sitting next to her crush than the fair happens and she sees the skeleton men again and at this point Ana knew that Mara needed to leave her time since she knew that the skeleton men were here because of their pick nick in the sky and saw her drawings of them in her note book and than told Ana they can’t see each other again than the skeleton men make a huge storm that Ana helps Mara out of but than another one happens after they have their heart to heart talk and this time the three skeleton men rise and start lightning up and scream huge sounds, Ana pleading that they don’t take Mara away but one of the men tells her they are there for her and what happens here today is what she chooses than she sees visions of the future than the men tell Ana and Mara that she can stay but all that is not from her time must go the ICom, boots, clothing and SID so they have a heart to heart with SID (the smart hovering ball from the begging) that happens than they take all of that away and leave them there than the summer ends and Ana and Mara try to improve their present by building their future tanks to what Mara knows from it which I feel that she should of forgotten about that but oh well. I thought it should of ended before the third part but it’s fine whatever, the part where Ana and Mara practice for the first playing tag felt like a movie I’m sure I’m getting better at reading that must be the case, I loved uncle Jack and Mara relationship super funny even though I’m sure he is way older than her (well technically yes by appearance but not really she is from the future year 2187). I wasn’t sure why the wormholes appeared but I think it was because of her traveling back in time I think, and those skeleton guys were like time cops wanting to keep everything where it should be. It could be be a good movie or tv show. I can’t believe I liked it this much I picked it out randomly. This books was absolute fire! And super funny at times! 4 out of 5 stars! Easy!

Girl out of time was such a fantastic read. About a little girl who lost her family and what family means to them. About growing up. And what it means to try to save what you have.

This book deals with climate change, and change in general and the author wanted it to end on a hopeful note. I would say he succeeded. When it comes to change it takes work and it's not always easy but with people you trust and love, it is possible. And when it comes to that change, we follow a main character who is thrown into change.

After losing her mother, father, and then her home to live with her uncle, she's got a new school to deal with. New kids. And she's afraid of it. She doesn't want to be the weird kid. Then she meets Mara.

We get a book that has various dimensions, other worlds, the want to run away from out problems. It's got a lot of hear.

My biggest issue with this book is that there's very few descriptions of the characters. And I believe one of color. It's a small town but if you've got interdimensional travel, time travel, all that stuff, you can add more people of color.

I will still give this book five stars. I loved it despite that.

Girl Out of Time by Clyde Boyer is such a fun Science Fiction Novel for all ages. I throughly enjoyed reading it. Anna and Mara’s Friendship was fun to read, and I absolutely loved their adventure together. This was an exciting experience with so many unexpected events throughout the story. I never knew where it would take me as a reader next. I love the talk and experience reading about portals/time travel, Aliens and wormholes. I will definitely have to pick this up when it comes out and read it a second time. All of the characters are easy to connect with and understand, they were realistic and felt very well written, Clyde Boyer did an amazing job on this one! 5 Stars.

After the tragic death of her parents, 8th grader Anna moves from her hometown of Boston to the rural farmland with her uncle Jack. With her love of science guiding her, Anna discovers an anomaly in the time-space continuum right in her backyard. Here she meets Mara, a mysterious woman from the future and her AI support SID. When a wormhole opens up and another creature enters her world, both Anna and Mara end up on the adventure of a lifetime.

I LOVED this story! The whole storyline was engaging, exciting, and just the type of thing to captivate my sci-fi loving middle schoolers.

Thank you #NetGalley and #GirlFridayBooks for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

After Anna is orphaned, she is packed off to Uncle Jack’s research farm. Because Anna’s eyes are always on the sky (and her heart is in space), she notices that there’s something unusual about the sky around the farm. Strange lights and odd noises lead Anna to befriend Mara, an unusual woman who lives in an…unusual…home on the shores of a nearby lake. Anna quickly learns that Mara is more than she first appears.

Numerous elements and episodes of the story are firmly rooted in popular culture. Rather than making the story trite, these roots help the story feel like a modern twist on that which we already know. Time travel, wormholes, and creatures from other dimensions combine to make this fast-paced story work. Anna’s innate curiosity elevates these potentially scary elements to pure adventure as she embraces new experiences and new friends.

I loved the discussion on contemporary agricultural practices and the need to find ways to sustainably farm for a growing population. The diverse cast of characters make clear that sustainable agriculture is a worldwide issue. This important aspect of the story is accessible without being patronizing to young people.

Engaging characters makes this a fun read that explores deeper themes such as friendship, finding purpose, and finding hope in an often confusing world. This book is great for middle school and early high school age kids, those who like a splash of science in their stories, and those who always try to do the right thing.

A book that was intended for young readers that still managed to capture my attention. Girl Out of Time by Clyde Boyer
Anna Armstrong is a brilliant precocious girl who has always been fascinated by space. In fact, she has attempted to launch herself several times into space but unfortunately, her homemade rocket ships did not have sufficient enough power to get her there. Tragically, on the day of one of her “launches”, she learns that her mother and father have died on their way back home from Europe. Thirteen-year-old Anna then goes to live with her kind uncle Jack on his farm research center outside Smartt Indiana.
Very soon upon her arrival, Anna sees strange lights in the distance and eventually goes and investigates. There, she discovers a different dimension in time and space, where girl named Mara exists. Anna soon becomes involved in trying to help Mara save the world from the repercussions of time travel using Science to help them.
This is such a wonderful book about responsibility, friendship and science. The young people presented are supportive and caring towards each other and lessons learned about curiosity, responsibility and friendship abound.
This book should be added to school libraries as well as any little classroom library. It is a science fiction novel that is accessible to upper elementary and middle school students.

This was a fun sci-fi read that I think toes the line of middle school and young adult. I enjoyed the characters and the emphasis on empathy for our fellow man or alien. I think Mara's world could have done with more building. I also felt Boyer spent too much time describing the future tech, but that might appeal to younger readers. And that tech seems too advanced for the 22nd century.

I noticed that Boyer rarely uses placeholders like "it," "she," or "them." This makes his paragraphs sound repetitive when he's always referring to a person or object by full name.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boyer for the ARC!

3/5 stars! I struggled with this book because it felt like very young YA. Like elementary school science fiction. So for me, it was challenging to stay engaged and 'buy in' on some of the story concepts. However, since I'm not the ideal population for reading it, I do think younger readers would find this exciting and enjoy the story. It was still a good read.

Girl Out of Time is an adventurous story about finding where you belong and discovering oneself. This was hard for me to get into since the middle grade sci-fi/agriculture themes are heavy. This would be great for a younger audience looking for a book that has tons of unusual concepts meant to stretch ones imagination.
