Audra Sullivan is level headed, tough as hell, grown woman who is haunted by several things including parents who don't understand her, self-loathing, trauma, a love life riddled with disaster and trust issues, and lets not forget the ghost of the man she killed when she was only 17...
It's been eight years since Audra had seen a ghost, not since the night she killed someone who used to mean a great deal to her... Then a demon shows up to warn her that she is the target for a blood sacrifice. Now she and everyone she loves are either targets or suspects. Audra tries to decode the demon's riddle while piecing together clues as they fall into her lap. Being a White Lantern comes with a lot of death and darkness, but it also just might be her saving grace...
This took me far too long to finish. Were there good parts? Yes. But for me, it was far too religious. I liked the spiritual aspect, but it was waaaaaaaay too triggering for me personally. Too long, too much random dialogue that didn’t need to happen. The main character irked me too. Not a fan.
Being a Christian, I was incredibly excited as I started noticing the Christian themes and conversation in this book. The story started off very strong but unfortunately fizzled out. The book seemed to be far too long. There was a lot of filler dialogue that was unnecessary. With my copy being 500 pages, I really feel like it could have been cut in half. Because of the length, I slowly found myself more bored than interested. It also meant that the characters didn’t have much of an emotional pull as it progressed. With that being said, I think there is a lot of potential with this being a debut novel. I still plan on reading the sequel when released.
The author has dubbed this the perfect novel for anyone that lists Supernatural and The Ghost Whisperer on their comfort show this, and I totally agree. All of the characters are well developed, likable, and the dialogue was witty. Audra and Nadia were a duo that were not immune to drama and darkness, but worked through it and strengthened their bonds in the best ways. Audra shows that inner strength is literally made from that which did not kill us, just as the proverb suggests, and it is shored up and patched held in place with deep rooted faith. Add in the mystery on how to free herself from the literal ex from hell, navigating imperfect relationships, family drama, and devastating loss and you get the perfect paranormal mystery novel. Now I am a romance girly so would I have loved for her to end the book with the hunky professor? Heck yes. But I think homegirl just needs to be happy on her own for a minute and that is a good ending too. Lots of potential for a sequel or expansion. Or even a Hattie prequel!
One side note, there is some off page SA that is revisited and ALOT of religious input. I know both of those can be triggering to some.
I keep seeing posts that if you like Supernatural (the show) you’ll like this book. I don’t know if I find that completely true, especially since Supernatural is one of my FAVORITE shows. I just didn’t get that vibe. But to each their own.
The writing was a bit choppy and the conversation points just don’t come off well. It’s an interesting plot though and it’s filled with grief and some decent paranormal parts but over all I just felt the story didn’t flow well.
I will also say that this book definitely could’ve been cut down. 521 pages was a bit much for this story and some things could have been edited out for sure as they weren’t completely necessary.
As always, just because I didn’t enjoy this book doesn’t mean you won’t like it! So you should totally check it out if you find the synopsis interesting!
I don’t know where to begin, this book was an amazing read. I couldn’t put it down. If you like supernatural and ghost whisperer this is the book for you. White lantern is written so good that you feel everything the main character is going through. I’ve recently lost a loved one and could never explain how I felt. Ms. Leslie put grief into words that sums up how I’ve felt since the day it happened. I’ve read a lot of books and not many have made me cry and happy at the same time. This book did just that. Thank you for writing an amazing book and hopefully we will get a sequel.
I don't even know where to start. I loved this book. Good and evil, spiritual battle. Columbus Ohio setting with numerous references to local places. The love and connection between an aunt and best friend. I was hooked from the beginning. Many tears shed.
