The Irax were the spawn of the Being, the malicious God of the world. They were thought to have been eradicated cycles ago by the Valker Warriors, until Ander and Breeja are attacked by one. Injured, terrified, and confused, they travel to the capital, Hammon, to find answers from the leaders of the city. Instead, they are arrested, brutalized, and falsely accused of summoning the Irax and sympathizing with the Being. Their only hope is in the warriors of old. But they soon learn the Irax aren't the only monsters in the world.
I’m completely biased on this book so I feel it this review would be better used in saying what you can expect in this YA fantasy book and hopefully convince you to give this one a try!
Read if you enjoy: - Young Adult Dark Fantasy Books - Adventure and traveling storylines - A sub-plot involving childhood friends to lovers - Mental health rep; specifically anxiety & panic attacks - Magic systems based on tattoos - A kick butt heroine & a cinnamon roll hero - Major character arcs - An ending that’ll leave you wanting the next book ASAP
This was a solid debut novel and a great start to this series! Loved all the world building and the plot was very interesting.
I really liked the two main characters, Ander and Breeja. They had great banter and a sweet friends to lovers romance. I would have loved a little more build up, but they definitely had chemistry and were truly best friends.
I had a little bit of a hard time with one of the side characters. Her sexual comments and humor were not for me and unfortunately it pulled me out of the story enough to not fully enjoy this one.
Romantic Content: Kissing
*Some strong language
**Make sure you read the author’s trigger warnings. This was pretty gruesome/violent for YA
3.5 stars. The Eradic is a solid debut YA fantasy with epic adventure, thorough world building, and just a bit of romance. Ander and Breeja have a sweet relationship with great banter based on their childhood friendship, although I would have liked a little more romantic chemistry throughout the first part of the book. The Irax creatures are horrifying and grotesque, while the true villains are just despicable.
I struggled a bit with some of the side characters and dialogue, but I enjoyed the story at its core. The author’s medical knowledge and use of precise terminology to describe injuries stood out to me. The pacing is a bit slow in the beginning, but all the twists and reveals about the intricate (and very cool!) magic and religious systems in this world keep the reader engaged until an explosive ending that demands a sequel.
This book has all the adventurous, tense vibes of Lord of the Rings, but with its own twist. The world building really is impeccable in this book. There is so much detail in the world history, religion, magic, and the gruesome Irax creatures. This book does a great job balancing the world building with the plot so you don't get overwhelmed, and I'm excited to discover more details about the Being and the Valker Warriors in the next book.
There is a sweet slow-burn romance in this book too, with a friends-to-lovers vibe. I liked seeing their relationship grow throughout all the things they went through together. I do wish there were a bit more romantic hints in the first half, but the romance in the second half was adorable.
Even though this book starts off a bit slower, it packs a punch at the end! The last 20% flew by because I was trying to turn the pages as fast as I could. There are some great plot twists and crazy things happening throughout the book that pull in your attention. And THAT ENDING. I need the next book now!! This was a great debut by S. Goodey.
