A Light in the Window is the second book in the Charm Wars Fantasy series. I liked how this book starts right up where the first book ended. Alyse and Kate are on the run to get away from Troy Estati who Alyse is being forced to marry. These two young women stand out in the rough world. They soon find themselves in a terrible circumstances and will depend on others and their own strength to get away.

I really liked how much action and character development there was for Alyse and Rill. Alyse is still my favorite character and I admire her fortitude against those pursuing the wrong things. The magic system is different in this series but it's not over the top. It is easy to follow the different magical people and their spells. I still dislike Troy and his mother. The Estati family is not my favorite except for Troy's sister. This book is shorter and reads more like a novella attached to a series. It was still enjoyable but I wanted more and look forward to book three.

Action, determination, hope and intrigue come together to form an engaging continuation of the series.

Alyse is on the run, trying to reach her uncle and his forces before she's caught by the Matriarch and used as a pawn in a game for power, but fate has other plans. When a stop at an inn leaves her captured by brigands, she fears that it means her death, but when they learn who she is, the situation grows even more dire. Rill is determined to find Alyse and bring her back, but he's now caught up in trying to save her instead.

This second book begins where the first left off, and the reader finds Alyse and her friend trying to flee but unknowledgeable about the world they are attempting to blend in with. Their lack of understanding makes their mistakes frustrating but understandable and more realistic. But then, this entire fantasy tends to give off a more natural and realistic atmosphere, allowing the reader to gain a sense of familiarity with the world. The magic and action add the right touch of imagination and excitement.

It was easy to get caught up in Alyse's plight and, still, understand Rill's decisions, too. Even the side characters hold enough depth and individual desires to create tight weave of sub-stories, giving richness to every unexpected twist and turn. While a handful of moments passed too fast and others a little slow, the tale, generally, keeps a quick pace and grabs the reader until the very end. I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed the adventure.

A Light in the Window is a touching story of redemption and hope that delves into the power of forgiveness and second chances. The story follows Joe, a young man who has committed errors in the past and is attempting to find his place in life. Joe embarks on a spiritual journey after a chance encounter with a wise old man that leads him to confront his history, face his fears, and eventually find peace.

The book's writing is simple and interesting, with a smooth flow that makes it simple to read and comprehend. With evocative descriptions of the little village where the narrative is set, the author does a fantastic job of establishing a feeling of mood. Also, the plot is given depth and complexity by the individuals' distinct personalities and motivations, which are well-developed and believable.

The way the book approaches difficult subjects like forgiveness, atonement, and the human condition is one of its strong points. With provocative views on the nature of sin, shame, and salvation, the author's insights into these subjects are acute, perceptive, and creative. I was particularly impressed by how the book delves into the intricacies and complexities of these topics rather than resorting to clichés and easy solutions.

In general, I would advise readers who like spiritual or inspirational novels to read A Light in the Window. It's a well-written, intelligent book that presents a novel viewpoint on age-old issues.

In the first book of Charm Wars, we met Alyse, Kate, Rill(the VAIN one) Troy (who Alyse is betrothed to) Yall, Magnus and a few others who we meet up with again in book two.  We also got left trying to figure out if Alyse and Kate would escape with their lives. A Light In The Window picks right back up with a punch to the gut of these girls trying to survive. So,saddle back up y’all, we’re about to have an adventure of a lifetime.

Alyse and Kate are traveling as fast and far away from Caldon as they can. They know Mora, has probably already told the family what has happened and more than likely people have already been sent out to look for them. What they don’t know though is that they are being tracked by Troy, Rill, Jade (Mora’s girl) Yall and Magnus. Troy’s family has sent them to bring Alyse back so Troy can marry her. They also don’t know just how much danger lies ahead of them.

Alyse swears that they can make it to The Marches and get to her Uncle Leoc and that he will save them and not make her marry. But, when they get attacked and captured by a group of Brigands things go downhill fast. After almost dying(the first time) they get hauled away to a camp and this is where they run into familiar faces. The leader of the Brigands is now Palquo, one of which got exiled in the first book even though he fought for the Dejune’s in a really bloody battle. Palquo now hates the Dejune’s and even if they get a ransom for Alyse and Kate he wants them dead.

After what seems like decades Rill and company catch up to them and make a plan to set them free. But they are severely outnumbered. Troy wants to get out of there with their lives and give up but Rill refuses. They didn’t get this far just to turn tail and run. And, Rill wants to impress and make Lord Deuth proud of him. Rill has to be a mage no matter what. And it’s clear that it doesn’t matter what bridges Rill burns, he’s going to act on his wants and needs.

A Light In The Window introduced me to sides of Rill that I didn’t think he had. And, in some aspects I started to feel sorry for him. But, I would also get to another chapter and want to smack fire out of him for being so bullheaded. Troy is still a character that I can’t stand and I think he needs to be smacked a few times too. However, parts of me also feel sorry for Troy because he does love Alyse. I also got to venture into different sides of Alyse too. And, I could feel the tension between Rill and Alyse the entire time, as though a broken friendship was popping right out of the page.

There were a lot of twists throughout the book and I have a lot of questions that NEED to be answered. I enjoyed the story so much that I felt a little book-hangover happen when I finished it. I’m really thankful that I was given the opportunity to read it and I want to thank Dan Lutts for sending me my copy, it was a joy to read. I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars and I can’t wait to see what happens in book 3.

The Adventure Continues

The adventure continues to develop. Just as I think I know what direction the story will go, it makes an unanticipated turn. The characters are strong, and story continues to unfold in intriguing ways. A very enjoyable read, and I am anxiously awaiting the next volume.
