Furious Legacy #2

Dungeon of Hades

Rate this book
Demi-Furies, Cass and Erin, battle their way through the Underworld to rescue their family in this urban fantasy adventure, which is perfect for fans of Percy Jackson.

Finding out he was part Fury was weird enough, but now Cass is thrown into a battle he’s not sure he wants to fight. He just wants to go back to his normal life, but the gods (and his sister, Erin) have other plans.

With the Furies imprisoned in Tartarus, Apollo and the goddess of nightmares are busy gathering the pieces for their war against Olympus. To stop them, Cass and Erin must harness all of their demi-Fury powers to go to the Underworld and bring the Furies home.

It’s not going to be easy. Saving the Furies means they’ll need to stay one step ahead of the goddess of nightmares, break into the dungeon of Tartarus, and battle the monsters who are gathering in the Underworld.

They have three days to outsmart the gods, unite their power, and get their family back before they’re trapped in the Underworld forever.

What worked:
The book is heavily based on Greek mythology and the shaky relationships between the gods and goddesses. The underlying conflict driving the whole book is Apollo’s obsession to defeat Zeus in order to rule everyone and everything. The complication with the main characters, Erin and Cass, arises from the fact that Apollo is their grandfather. Apollo is good at manipulating others, so it’s safe to say he can’t be trusted whenever he speaks. This lack of trust spills over to other characters since readers are never sure if they’re secretly working for Apollo. In addition, there are other hidden disputes that result in surprise consequences.
The major plotline follows Erin and Cass as they venture down to Hades to free their mother. She’s been captive for years, but now two of the twins’ aunts are prisoners too. The quest leads to Tartarus, and the twins are frequently reminded that no one ever wants to go there. It’s a land of misery and doom where spirits are trapped for eternity. The twins haven’t seen their mother in years, Cass has never even met her, so the suspense surrounding their reunion creates anticipation for that moment in the story. The abilities of the twins are uncertain since there’s never been offspring with the blood of a Fury and a god. Of course, readers will eventually discover what makes the twins special.
The book has plenty of battles between the characters and mythical monsters. Hades is full of creatures and spirits that are looking for ways to release their anger and anguish. Then, there are other monsters tasked with keeping the spirits imprisoned, but they're equally likely to attack two kids trespassing where they don't belong. There are also Furies involved, and their whole purpose for existing is to punish others for their sins.
What didn't work as well:
This book is the second in the series, and it's important for readers to understand what's happened so far. This book doesn't share many details about past events, so it's imperative that book one is read first. The stories of the Furies, the twins’ parents, and Apollo are pretty important to know. Clues can be picked up along the way, but there will still be gaps in the backstory that readers may miss. The easiest solution? Read Curse of the Furies first!
The Final Verdict:
The early part of the book is a little slow, but the action and suspense amp up once the kids head down to Hades. The setting and characters create a mysterious atmosphere that will captivate readers. A surprise twist is presented near the book’s conclusion that will have a huge impact on the next book in the series.

As someone extremely interested in Greek mythology, I was excited to pick up the Dungeon of Hades and see what would happen to Erin and Cass in the second instalment of the Furious Legacy series.

I loved the subtle incorporation of mythology in the story, I also liked how, in both this book and the previous, the main character was a fury. It resulted in an interesting dynamic that I hadn’t read before.

However, I did find the book a touch boring at times. Some scenes were just too long, while others not long enough. I found myself skipping sentences in between sometimes, while on the other hand I would flip the page only to find out the scene had ended already.

Hence, I have given it a 3.5-star rating, rounded down to 3.

Great sequel. More fun mythology, and a trip to the Underworld. I really enjoyed it as will fans of Rick Riordan's Presents style books.

I would have loved to learn even more about Cass in this book, it definitely moved the action forward, but didn't have as much world building or aha! moments as the first. A bit of a 'middle book' where stuff had to happen, but few new characters made an impact.

Great descriptions of the underworlds!

I am eager for the conclusion to arrive!

loved going back to Cass and Erin as I really enjoyed the first Furious Legacy series. It was what I wanted from the sequel, it had great mythological elements. I had a lot of fun reading this.

Thank you BookSirens for a copy of this ARC in return for an honest review.

This is such a fun series. I love how all of the Greek myths and characters come into this story and guide the plot for Cass and Erin. It’s a very fast paced read and there’s never a dull moment. It’s the best kind of book to pick up when you want some adventure but nothing too emotionally heavy.

I really loved this second book in the series and it’s left off at a pivotal point to start the third. I can’t wait to read it!

RATING: 4 STARS

Dungeon of Hades is the sequel to Curse of the Furies and it packs just as much of a punch as the first book. Cass and Erin, our main characters, must venture into the deepest part of the Underworld to rescue the legendary Furies from their prison. Can they rescue the Furies (who just happen to be their Mom and Aunts) and stop Apollo's plans, all the while staying alive?

I enjoyed how the storyline was driven not only by the characters out of Greek Mythology but by the stories themselves. The story of the Dragon's teeth is one of my favorites, and it makes an appearance in this book. Other stories from Greek Mythology make an appearance too, but you’ll have to read the book to find out which ones.

One of my favorite parts of the first book was seeing the Furies (who are normally depicted as vengeful figures) in maternal roles, and that grew in Dungeon of Hades. We finally see Alecto, and her relationship with her children is quite strained. Alecto didn’t seem to know how to handle the fact that her sisters have a better relationship with her daughter (and her son) than she does, so I’m crossing my fingers and toes and hoping that they are able to repair their relationship with time.

Overall, Dungeon of Hades is another awesome installment in the Furious Legacy series. The ending is a total cliffhanger - hoping that readers won’t have to wait too long for the next installment. I’m eager to see what’s next for the twins and how their eventual confrontation with Apollo plays out.

Thank you to the author and Book Sirens for my gifted copy of this book; I appreciate the opportunity to read and review Dungeon of Hades immensely. All opinions expressed in the review are my own and not influenced in any way.

In the second book of the series, Erin and Cass take a tour of the Underworld.
There, with the help of an array of characters, old and new, they discover more about their powers and attempt to rescue the Furies.
The author added more myths in this book and I really enjoyed reading about them.
I'm happy she did her research and we got to see these mythical figures, their stories, and their struggles.
We read about the siblings and how this journey changed them. We have two points of view and so we can read about both of them and how they react to the world around them.
I liked how their relationship changed from book one up until the end of this book.
Cass finds out about his powers and works on them, while Erin finally decides to embrace hers.
There were a few slow plot moments and during their journey, a lot of their reactions didn't make sense. If their misjudgment had happened during the first book, I would have been okay with that because then they didn't know better.
In general, it was a fun book to read. It took more than it should because of some of my own personal reasons, but if you read past the first few chapters, the rest of the pace goes by rather fast.
A thank you to Booksirens for the free ebook copy.

New modern myths in the making.

Basically, this is an excursion to the Underworld by modern US teens aka the twins’ Cass & Erin’s adventures in Underworld. The 2nd book in the series starts slow, building in what happened in the 1st book and the huge amount of description makes this book - for me - more epic. Cass and Erin are trying to find & release their mom and the other furies in the Underworld but everybody seems to want to derail them. You betcha the help of gods has strings attached. In fact, all their helpers seems to have their own agenda & bargain to extract from these 2 furylings. I like that Max finally lives up to his hellhound rep. Loved the taming of Cerberus and weeping willows now have a new genesis story for me. I didn’t buy the differentiation between witches & sorceresses Circe made. I liked the idea of freeing someone from their cage so they can rescue themselves, very philosophical. Rats the size of horses reminded me of The Princess Bride. This book read slower than the 1st, hence 4🌟, but the book remakes a lot of Greek myths with the author’s own spin on things, which I loved.

Recommended for YA Greek myths fans. Suitable for kids or any ages, really.

I enjoyed returning to Erin and Cass' story, seeing the next steps in their journey. I did find that the writing was better with this second book than it had been with the first, we got to 'see' more of the internal dialogue and thoughts of our characters which was fantastic.
I found there were parts that seemed like they should have been bigger, more important, but they felt very quick and over simplified. Things that should have been a character building challenge ended up being very simple and quickly resolved.
I love the premise of this series, the family dynamics and politics of a thousand years or so make for a great foundation and a ton of fascinating characters; unfortunately the two main characters don't have quite the same level of appeal for me.
I am absolutely interested in reading the next installment of this tale, I want to see how things play out between the Furies!
Final thoughts; this is a great series for someone who who is a fan of Percy Jackson and who wants an easy read with some of the more obscure/intricate Greek mythology.

This book is the second in a trilogy, and I’ve been super excited for it to come out. We were left with a bit of a cliffhanger with book 1 - without giving too much away, it’s nothing too major, but I needed to know how Cass and Erin were going to access then navigate the Underworld and release the Furies.

One of the things I have loved about this series so far is you don’t have to know ANYTHING about Greek mythology. All the characters are explained, and I love how they’re slotted into our world - I think it’s really clever. I also really enjoy how it’s just about the action, and it’s focussed on these two teens. So yeah, they do dumb things sometimes but it’s exactly what real world teens would do and I don’t sense any intrusion by the adult author into the story, if that makes sense.

It’s a fun read if you’re a grown up like me, and it’s also quite suitable for younger tweens/teens too. There’s some mild horror and themes of parental loss through absence, but it’s otherwise a pretty safe read. I’m really looking forward to the third one - I can’t wait to see how it finishes!

I honestly excepted more.
The first part of the book is really slow, poor writter for me, just to fill pages.
I am sorry. I loved the first installment in this series and I was more dissappointed that anyone.
I felt the writer was trying to fit one million things in this book and really didn't have time to advance them and in the other hand she brought to the spotlight so many sub plot that really would be ok if it was only a page or two.
Even when the twins managed to enter the Underworld, the plot really fails to impress you.
There were some huge WTF moments but in the good way but besides those I wanted to just finish it to go to the next one.
I won't stop the series and of course I still enjoyed all the Greek mythology in this book and I really feel a connection forming slowly with Erin.
For that, 3 stars from me.

Overall, I'd say that this was a good idea, and I enjoyed the world building of the underworld and the creatures within it very much. The reason that I only gave it 3 stars and likely wouldn't read again or continue the series is because the main characters were so frustrating. They would discuss the risks of the underworld and how they shouldn't eat anything, or should stay together, etc. and the a minute later they'd do exactly that creating far worse problems for everyone and themselves. It kept happening to the point where it became a bit predictable and quite frustrating. However, I still did enjoy the adventure and a unique and well described take on the underworld.

Oh how my heart breaks - I was so excited for this 2nd installment - but it was not to be. The writing was good, the action came later, the AHA moments took so long to get there I was at that point wanting to just finish :(. The first half of the book basically felt like a college essay I totally remember bs-ing my way through to meet the word count requirement. I’m sorry :(

I still plan to continue the series - hopefully the excitement returns for me - 3rd times a charm!
