Every time a shooting star is scheduled, Arthur, Carol and Tim choose a house with the best vantage point to haunt, carefully making sure its residents are not home.
But this time Arthur recognises the decor. The furnishings belong to his ex-boyfriend, Alexander, a man he never got over. And judging by the happy snaps in the photo frames, Alexander lives with a new lover.
Just as the ghosts settle in to watch the celestial event, the occupants return home early.
Kevin lives with his husband, Warren, in their humble apartment (affectionately named Sabrina), in Australia’s own ‘Emerald City,’ Sydney.
His tall tales explore unrequited love in the theatre district of the Afterlife, romance between a dreamer and a realist, and a dystopian city addicted to social media.
His first novel, Drama Queens with Love Scenes, spawned a secondary character named Guy. Many readers argue that Guy, the insecure gay angel, is the star of the Actors and Angels book series. His popularity surprised the author. The third in this series, Drama Queens and Devilish Schemes, scored a Rainbow Award (judged by fans of queer fiction) for Best Gay Alternative Universe/Reality novel.
His novel, The Midnight Man, scored first place in the LGBT category of the Paranormal Romance Guild's Reviewer's Choice Awards, as well as winning the Fantasy category of the 2021 Gay Scribe Awards.
So, with his fictional guardian angel guiding him, Kevin hopes to bring more whimsical tales of love, life and friendship to his readers.
Kevin Klehr has such a beautiful way of constructing a story, and Three Ghosts has so many wonderful twists and turns. I can only say, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
I received a copy of Three Ghosts for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own
The good + The tips they gave to the house ghost + Ghosts having a holiday + The focus on the importance of platonic relationships. I really love how
The neutral o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased o Neither Alexander, Edward or Arthur sounded like particularly nice people to be around o Having an Arthur and an Alexander who's occassionally called Alex in one book makes it hard to keep track of who is who
The bad - The plot made no sense at all. Why would Edward mention out loud, especially when they think there's an intruder in their home? - Why ? - The book had an open end.
Quotes x "Welcome to the abode. You know it's customary to tip me." "Of course. If you spill red wine on carpet, soak it in soda water immediately." "I know that one, but it's a good tip. Thank you."
This book was... not at all what I expected. I got it from GayRomanceReviews, so I thought there would be a gay romance. However, this book is not a romance (even though the main conflict revolves around Arthur and his ex). Instead, I ended up in a complicated story of revenge. I would have preferred the blurb to have made this clear to me. I would only recommend this book to people who never read a blurb anyway, and enjoy strange revenge plots executed by ghosts who can appear and disappear at will (which makes for some very good haunting).
In the tradition of Noel Coward’s play, Blithe Spirit, Kevin Klehr’s ghostly short story is both amusing and chilling.
Three ghosts, Arthur, Carol and Tim, meet at a suburban house with a view to enjoy a shooting star—a custom the friends have developed over time. It is an interesting take on ghosts and what they can do—since the lore about ghostly abilities varies widely and is easily adapted to an author’s own wishes.
As the ghosts explore the house—whose owners are absent, which is part of the custom, the house spirit, Sabrina, watches them. I really enjoyed the notion of a “ghostly culture” in which behaviors and customs are established. It is lighthearted, filled with the banter of people who know each other and have done this before.
The story starts to get strange (stranger?) when Tim sees something as the trio explores the house. The attention turns to Arthur—and then the house’s owners return unexpectedly, shifting the tone of the story gradually darker.
There is an intentional feel of a sitcom episode in this story, yet the shock at the center of the narrative keeps the tone dark, even at its slapstick silliest. Ghosts are not just the spirits of the dead: they’re people, too, with feelings and memories (at least while they’re still “here”). As the plot unspools to its finale, it turns to a quietly poignant tone, which is surprisingly touching and heartfelt. The whole story is a delightful surprise, covering a wide range of emotion in a short time.
Wow. This was amazing. First, let's talk plot - I thought I knew where the story was going, and then I almost got whiplash from the curveball Klehr throws, but he does it well, and it doesn't feel completely out of place. The ghosts were great. I loved them as characters, and I love the idea of ghosts being able to "drink" alcohol by simply having the vapors pass through them. I enjoyed the story overall, and flew through it pretty quickly, because I was curious what would happen next. I will say, the ghosts reacted to the twist better than I would have! (But I won't tell you what it is, you'll have to read to find out). If you're looking for a fun, short read, that will make you giggle a few times, (looking at you Fred and Arthur), then this is perfect for your next read!
Wow! This was a short but amazing read that has many twists and turns to reveal a deadly secret. When a stargazing adventure by three ghosts turns into catching a killer that used to be your lover just knocks a person for a loop. It’s also about true friendship and finding justice and closure. A quick read that delivers a one two punch and realizing who your friends really are in the end. Enjoy!
A shooting star starts their hunt for a new place to haunt. This time one recognizes the decor and knows it belongs to an ex he never got over. They only haunt empty houses. Unfortunately the owners return. What is going to happen now? What will they do? See where you will be taken
Arthur and his friends Carol and Tim visit a house that they have designated as the perfect spot to catch a shooting star. They are making themselves at home and poking about in the belongings of the house’s occupants who are guaranteed to be away. Things take a turn though when Tim and Carol recognize Arthur in a photo album with Alexander, the owner of the house. Arthur is a bit sad because he left Alexander who he thought was the love of his life. He sees that Alexander has moved on with someone new as there are pictures of the two of them. Carol and Tim try to get Arthur to talk about his life with Alexander and why he was the love of his life, but the all bets are off because a car stops at the house. And Alexander and the boyfriend are home.
Carol and Tim and Arthur watch Alexander and the new guy, Edward, in action. Seems like Alexander hasn’t changed too much. Tim and Carol encourage Arthur to reach out and communicate with Alexander. Then things take a 180 degree turn! Oh my!
Whoa! I did NOT see that coming. Seems like a nice little ghost story, revisiting the past. Trying to impart wisdom to the living in order for them to not repeat patterns. Then BAM! Out of left field, this story becomes something else entirely! It was surprising and I really wanted to see what would happen 🙂 This was a spooky story with suspense and some humor and I really enjoyed the plot twists. Let’s just say that in they end, everything works out 😉 Recommended for fans of ghost stories in particular. This short story packs a real punch!
A very different sort of ghostly story, this one starts off light and gets into outright terror as a threesome of ghosts set out to celebrate a relaxing evening of star-gazing and along the way one of them, Arthur, learns the truth about his death, and it wasn’t the peaceful scenario he’d assumed it to be.
The story has a bit of a campy feel at first but turns to mayhem when the gory truth of what happened years ago unfolds. The ghosts exact their own sort of justice on Arthur’s ex and his new lover when they learn the truth. With the assistance of the trio, primarily Arthur, a police detective gets to spend his evening digging up a garden to...well, you’ll have to read this to learn more.
Despite the gory details and the oddity of the situation, I very much enjoyed this unique story. Short, satisfying, and spooky. A great Halloween treat that comes with zero calories but a lot of satisfaction.
Unusual (is there any other from Klehr?) story about an excursion undertaken by three ghosts to watch a falling star.
Arthur, Carol, and Tim have chosen a neighborhood house to "haunt" temporarily in order to watch the star, accompanied by the house spirit, as well. As they settle in, the friends realize that the inhabitants of the home are from Arthur's former life and start to come upon some unsettling clues about his past. It's a cleverly constructed story, with the interesting nods to a "culture" of sorts of the ghosts to the mystery of Arthur's past life, and manages to balance a bit of humor with some moments of horror. There are some moments of pathos and introspection on Arthur's part and some nice moments touching on the ghost friendships.
What this story is not is a romance, as some have thought it might be. But it is an interesting paranormal story about a minor redemption of sorts and the connections we make, or fail to make, both in life and the afterlife.
This was a unique and engaging ghost story. The idea of ghosts inhabiting a house for a time when the owners are aware was fun and intriguing. The story starts as kind of a buddies night out, with three ghosts (Arthur, Carol, and Tim) going to a house to view a shooting star from the best vantage point. There is some humor, but the moods changes a little when they realize the house belongs to Arthur's former boyfriend. Then Arthur's ex and his current boyfriend (who were NOT expected to come home) return. How will the ghosts react? You need to read the story to find out what happens next, but there is a twist that certainly wasn't anything I expected. The mood varies from fun and happy to gloomy and eerie, but it was interesting and I enjoyed it.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
this was interesting and a different take on a ghost story... it was sweet and sad.. it was curious and kept me curious what was going to happen next... the ghosts were fun to watch.. the love the regret.. it was all fun to read.
I’m not quite sure what I expected going into this narrative, but I do know it ended up defying (and in some ways surpassing) whatever nebulous expectations I had– this is a ghost story, and a love story, and a few other things besides, if not a conventional romance. The characters are interesting, the tone is unusual but engaging, and trying to describe the plot would be impossible without spoilers, so I’ll stick with: this is an interesting (in good ways!) read, one well suited to the short story format in which it appears.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.
I loved the beginning of this book, the idea of house spirits and ghosts visiting homes when the owners are away. It was good up until the twist, it seemed that there was no direction with the plot after Edward and Alex revealed what happened to Arthur.
Though the ending was sweet, being about friends as soulmates.
Not sure what I was expecting from this short story but it threw me for a bit of a loop. This is sort of a comedy/mystery. There is no romance here, so if that is what you were expecting, you need to look elsewhere. Arthur and his best ghost friends Tim and Carol always visit different houses to haunt and stargaze while the mortal occupants are away, think of a ghostly AirBNB. But Arthur and his friends find something they don’t expect at their most recent location, namely Arthur’s former boyfriend and his current partner. Shenanigans of an unexpected variety ensue that turn into a very interesting revelation. It was short, funny, and a little bit bizarre but worth a read.
A really interesting take on the ghostly romance. We often see the story where a ghost appears to a person who comes to live in a house and they start a romance. Here, the ghosts sneak into a house to watch a shooting star and find out that one of them has distinct ties to the place and one of the people in it. The plot involves what happens when that person unexpectedly returns home. This author always manages to take a story and turn it in several directions I didn't see coming and that is delightful.
First off.... I have to say that I was expecting a romance however this is not a romance by any means. It ended up being a story of three ghost friends discovering the mystery surrounding one of the friend's death and haunting those responsible. There were some fun moments and all in all a good plot but this ended up not being short for me.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
Hmm… this story was a little confusing to me at times, but overall, it wasn’t a bad story. It was actually sort of a unique story. The plot didn’t have much direction at times and there was no romance. There are a few entertaining moments and a twist I wasn’t expecting. I’m hesitant to read more from this author just from this story…
This is a ghost story, about star gazing ghosts who find themselves in a house in which a long lost lover now lives with his boyfriend but all is not what it seems. I found this to be a well crafted short story not at all what I was expecting. I liked it but not enjoyed it, if that makes sense.
Crazy little story. I was not expecting the twist. I thought it was going to be romantic and like a romcom but it was anything but that lol totally worth the quick read though. Just for the twist alone.
I had read this before, just had a fancy to read it again, and it was just as much fun as the first time. When ghosts and living beings meet it can be creepy, when bad deeds are involved it can be downright hilarious. A lovely but short tale.
Arthur is a ghost. Along with his two best friends (also ghosts) they find a place to watch a shooting star. The house they pick is perfect. Except that it’s his old boyfriends house. The love of his life. When the house’s occupants return Arthur gets the shock of his dead life.
This short story had a lot of characters to keep track of which was a bit distracting. Very interesting twist I didn’t see coming but really liked. Wouldn’t call it a love story but it was entertaining. Now I’ll know what happened the next time the vodka disappears.
