It’s a common story. I’m sure you can guess how it goes.Girl winds up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She witnesses four gods of beauty and brutality murder some poor sap, and she’s stupid enough to get caught.
Come on. You know what happens next.
You know they tracked her… me… down. I don’t need to tell you that they claimed me. Ripped me from my safe, perfect world and bound me in chains to their throne. All of that is obvious.
It’s the part where they corrupted me, dragged me into their world of death and destruction, made me theirs in every way I didn’t know was possible, and I became a soldier in a war that will bring all of Cinco City to its knees…
Ruby Vincent is a published author with many novels under her belt but now she's taking a fun foray into contemporary romance. She loves saucy heroines, bold alpha males, and weaving a tale where both get their happy ever after.
I gave up at 70% Started off great, developed even better. AND THEN... girl drama. AND THEN... internal conflict AND THEN... I turned it off and returned it to Kindle Unlimited to read something else.
Smut, ultra violence, broken people with broken dreams, borderline personalities and crime. This book delivered what was promised, unfortunately I think reading the Complete Series didn't give me a break between the stories and it just became too much.
These books are taking me longer than average to read. The plot’s not bad but I think it could have been condensed. I find myself getting bored and setting it aside to read old favorites (at least three so far) before returning to it.
Sinjin (St John Bellisario) is the featured male in the first book of the series, although all of them are well represented in their interactions with Adeline.
Is the Candy that Saint deals with the same female introduced at the auction in chapter 1?
Addy's initial impression at the fire station - An enclosed parking lot held four cars each more nondescript than the last. Assuming these cars belong to the Merchants, how is it that Saint’s truck seemed to attract the notice of the five gang members outside Addy’s old building, calling it a “sweet ride.” (Also, good on Captain’s involvement while there) Cash drives a convertible with a luxurious interior and Brutal has a Lexus. Do any of these qualify as nondescript? Not in my world.
Saint is obsessed with Addy, an emotion he has never encountered before. They settle their differences after a rocky start and he is her initial primary lover.
Cash (Killian Hunt) Book 2, Saint’s brother; not blood related but grew up together. His suspicions of Adeline are well founded.
I knew Gianna came across as more than your average twenty-something female. Addy seems to be harboring secrets and has an agenda yet to be disclosed. There are numerous hints but no actual confirmation.
Cash’s hunch regarding Adeline’s true motives are confirmed yet she refuses to admit anything. She sticks to her lies like white on rice because her long range plan will fall apart if revealed. It seems that they’ve fallen in love with each other but both have trust issues.
Cash places Lucky in charge of Addy’s care while the other three scour the city looking for her. I thought Sinjin was nominally in charge so why would Cash trust Lucky not to reveal her whereabouts?
Great cliff hanger ending. Glad final two books are available.
Brutal (Baris Alexander) Book 3 The true history of Kiernan comes to light. Addy knew it all along.
Gianna. Wow, just wow. I’ve got to say, though, that I agree with her assessment of the situation with Addy. Why doesn’t somebody just destroy the damn ledger and let the chips fall where they may? The goal to rule the city doesn’t seem all that attainable.
Am I supposed to admire Adeline for blind loyalty? Gianna pretty much ruined her and the guys and is causing them to risk their lives beyond even their usual day to day. I’d cut that bitch loose in a New York minute.
I let a lot of wrong words/misspellings get by but this one especially bugged me for some reason: Chapter 9: ...the Millers are here to tour their perspective home. Perspective can mean a point of view. The correct word is prospective - an event that is likely to or expected to happen in the future.
Our boy Brutal has more than a handful of secrets. He’s not shy about exposing other people's.
Mercer (Surname Santos - uses real first name)
At long last we find out who was killed in the very beginning.
For supposedly being a smart, street-wise female, Adeline sure comes across as optimistically Pollyanna-esque when it comes to relationships.
7/21 - Once again I find myself setting this aside to read something else. At least this time it’s not something I’ve already read.
7/25 - Going to put this in my dnf pile as my TBR is becoming unmanageable due to other series' additions. Like I said, I didn’t hate this so may wander back some day.
Edit to add: A commenter in a Facebook group came up with the brilliant idea of creating a “nrn” - not right now - list. This will be so helpful because I generally don’t remember which dnf books I intend to finish someday.
The pace, character building and plot twists are excellent. By the time we get to the third book it reads as if written by a different author who missed the first two. The character arc for the main female character is just not credible. The betrayal between the two friends is not isolated; it hurts innocent bystanders, and yet, the mfc makes space for reconciliation? Dubious. The first two books did the work of building some interiority for characters and slowly built a sense of rapport. By book three, it seems like the only thing that holds them together is sex. It's tiring how strong female leads just simper out.
Ah this series. To make it clear, Saint and Brutal stood above and beyond as favourites to me but it did tend to go back and forth at times. It's one heck of a ride!
The romance could be tweaked in aspects and some character make you wanna tear your hair out but overall, it's one I would come back to. It will be a little comfort read.
Overall rating: 4.1 Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶(maybe three quarters of that chilli 🤔)
This was OK. It's an anthology, so all the books after the first one are kind of melded into one. Each book focuses on a different love interest, and has an interesting twist. The problem is that the rest of the books don't deliver on the promise that the first book's twist implies. I wanted more badass from Addy, and less typical girl.
Honestly one of the best series I read, hot scenes yay! RH but not all together. The lies!!!! The dang lies, you are going to hate some of them and then love them again. I enjoy the series more when they show a real person, and the author delivered. The last 200 pages of the book I wanted to threw it to the wall. 😂 happy reading!
This is one of the best reads I have read this year. Having all the books together in one made for a seamless reading experience and I’ve already started trying to get my friends to read it. That’s something I almost never do. This was a fantastic read.
I think the thing that really draws me to Ruby Vincent books is her unique characters. There's always a solid plot with steamy interludes and plenty of action.
Excellent series! I could not put them down. Just as you are thinking you know where the story is going the author throws in another twist, I love it!! Will definitely read more by Ruby Vincent.
