It's usually one or two a night. Some are looking for justice others revenge. They all show up to the bar looking for the Demon though and all that he offers. So kick your feet up and think about your 10 drinks and enjoy the tales that follow. I hope it was worth it.
3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 The Good: There's a really good story in here. It's gross, filled with gore, and has a bit of a story. Or maybe I should say multiple stories. A demon can grant you a wish, in exchange for your soul upon death. Ever heard 'be careful what you wish for'? Yeah, this demon will make you feel that way. Also, it's hilarious that the pancake man whisks the people to the demon's bar. Oh yeah, 10 drink minimum, $100 a drink. How else is the bar owner supposed to make any money? The not-so-good: The book comes with a whopping price tag of $9.99 or free with KU> For a novella, from an author I never heard of, $9.99 sounds like there were some expensive editors on the other end shaping this book into perfection. Wrong. It's still very readable, but.... Several places are not formatted correctly (especially where there are numbered lists). Multiple run-on sentences. Some sentences aren't capitalized. Random words are capitalized. Dialogue punctuation is wrong in so many places. Some paragraphs last several pages. I could go on, but I won't. I don't think I would have added all that to my review if the price tag hadn't made me think it had been properly edited. I don't think this book went through a first round of edits. It's still readable, though. How did I land on 3.5 stars rounded up? The story was 5 stars. The editing/ formatting was 1 star.
This was a fun collection of interlinking horror stories! We follow several people with various motivations as they unwittingly seek the help of a demon for the price of their souls. They are brought to this bar by the demon’s messenger, the pancake man (iconic), where they make the sordid deals. The stories themselves range from: rape-revenge, uncanny sex dolls, scams, and even Attitude Era 90’s wrestling (nostalgic af with a number of Easter eggs for wrestling fans like myself). Some are bleak, others are cathartic—and they’re all compulsively readable. The book, overall, isn’t as depraved & grotesque as the stuff I normally like to read, but it’s still a good time!
If you haven’t read this yet, this is your sign to do so!
$100 a drink, 10 drink minimum. Agree to make the deal? This short anthology is pulled together so well! Different people in different scenarios but all end up at one bar for their 10 drinks.
We get an introduction to the pancake man…if you end up in his presence just know a trip to Dante & Milton’s is on the radar, need some help - leggo!
🥞 We first meet Natasha, a blogger for a website, covering “fun stuff” but is asked to step up and cover for a coworker that un-alived themself. She’s anything but thrilled. The only thing she was looking forward to was interviewing Shawn Blak, a man that inherited a fortune after his aunt & uncle were un-alived under weird circumstances. Natasha travels to Shawn’s office for the interview. It didn’t last long, the interview. Tension is high, it’s uncomfortable, she’s ready to go except the elevator won’t open. Only then does Natasha’s 2 day nightmare begin…. Natasha gets her revenge, Natasha makes her deal. 🥞 Next, we meet Bradley aka famous wrestler ‘Demon’ Bradley Baker. The name was fitting considering he sold his soul to be the best wrestler around. This story has all of the nostalgic 90s wrestling vibes you didn’t know you were missing! The company decides not to renew Bradley’s contract due to him not matching the company’s ‘new look’ instead insisting he is too violent and aggressive. Usually the older champ will wrestle the company’s new prodigy and lose, kind of like passing the torch. They don’t want to give Bradley that option, they want him gone. Well, he ends up convincing them to allow him to wrestle one last match as just him, no costume, no demon. They agree to it under one condition - absolutely no violence. Bradley wakes up in middle of the night and finds a note covered in sticky brown syrup like stuff, giving him instructions to put his mask on, stand in the mirror, and they’ll help him get what’s his…he thinks he wrote the note to himself but entertains the idea and does what he was instructed to do so. The room spins, he winds up ordering his drinks and making his deal…but was it really worth it? 🥞 Lastly, the dentist…the one that gives me the heebie geebies. He was depressed, ready to end it all. Found his grandfathers pew pew, put it in his mouth - ready to go - and the same time one of his nurses walks in to let him know his patient was ready…but this patient knew more than the dentist realized. The dentist takes a trip to the bar, refuses the deal, back to the office where his teeth get knocked out when his nurse storms through the door. Thr dentist looses his mind, pulls a pew pew out and turns it on her with a lobby full of patients. He ends up getting KTFO and wakes up in a hospital type setting, under the care of Dr. Schumer, the same doctor that helped our wrestler friend in the previous story. Being a skilled dentist, he was able to create teeth for himself out of soap , to replace the missing ones. The doctor pulled him into her office to let him know he would be transferred to another facility when she was interrupted by a gentleman with a folder claiming to have all necessary paperwork for the dentist release into his care. The dentist discovers he will be making teeth for life like dolls. He finds it weird that the dolls teeth are rotting because that wouldn’t happen with fake teeth, only ones made of real material…he does this gig for a few months, until a child like doll winds up on his table. This is where his nightmare unfolds.
This was one of the very first horror books I read last fall. This is my #1 recommendation for anyone wanting to 1.) support an indie author 2.) needing something that’ll suck you in and leave you wanting more. These stories make your heart race, make you feel uncomfortable, but keeps your mind racing on what’ll happen next. Not to mention how my deal will play out. 🤫😉
10 Drink Minimum by Matthew Lutton is, and forever will be, one of my favorite reads. There is just something about a horror book with heart behind it. And the feeling and emotion evoked by this book is mesmerizing, so much so that the outside world seems to fade a bit. You can’t go wrong with a demon who grants wishes, but be careful… your soul is his once you’ve made your wish. In this book we find out what people are willing to give their souls for, and just how far they’ll go. Lutton skillfully paints a vivid picture with his words and his character development is great! This book is full of endless imagination and gore, making it such a fun read!
📖 First, we meet Natasha, a blogger who usually focuses on "fun stuff" until she is unexpectedly asked to cover for a coworker The only thing she didn’t mind doing was interviewing a man who recently inherited a fortune after his aunt and uncle passed away. Natasha goes to Shawn's office for the interview and soon begins to feel uneasy. As she tries to leave, the elevator malfunctions and refuses to open. And that's when Natasha's two-day nightmare unfurls. And soon after, Natasha meets a man and makes a deal… Next, we encounter Bradley, the renowned wrestler known as 'Demon Bradley Baker'. The name suits him perfectly as you will come to know. However, the company decides not to renew Bradley's contract because his behavior no longer aligns with their vision. For his farewell fight, he agrees to appear as himself, without his costume or any other influence, on the condition there will be no violence. One night, Bradley wakes up to find a note drenched in a sticky, syrupy substance. Although he suspects he wrote the note himself, he entertains the words scrawled on it and follows the instructions. Suddenly, the room starts spinning, and Bradley finds himself in an unfamiliar place, where he proceeds to order his drinks. And then, he makes his deal. And last, we meet the most disturbing of all, the Dentist. He had been feeling hopeless, ready to give up on life, when his nurse walked in, alerting him of his next patient’s arrival. There was something different about this patient, however. Later on, after a visit to the bar and refusing a deal he’d been propositioned with, the Dentist returned to his office and had a bit of a run-in with his nurse — the dentist lost his cool. And then lights out… and he wakes up in a hospital under the care of a doctor we’ve met before…. Soon, the dentist is working on a whole new kind of teeth and things only get weirder and darker. This is the most haunting tale, with an unease that steadily creeps in and spreads throughout your entire being with every word.
A book of interwoven horror stories, all connected by one recurring theme, The Pancake Man, and his offers of notoriety and revenge, all in exchange for nothing more than a 10 drink minimum…. and your soul! The Pancake Man appears out of nowhere and offers to help people get what they want. But of course, there are consequences, brutal, bloody, bizarre, twisted, shocking, steamy, and sometimes hilarious consequences.
This was a great concept, the ideas behind every story were great, my absolute fave being The Dentist. The only downside for me was the flow of the stories wasn't as smooth as it could've been, but I believe that has now been rectified, and don't be put off by that because you'll be missing out on a great book!!
The opener of this book was brilliant, it had my interest piqued instantly! The story starts out with the cowboy, and we follow several different characters from thereon in, each with their own unique story, their own particular wants and needs….
Natasha is interviewing Shawn Blak, about his weird inheritance, when things quickly take a bizarre and unexpected turn. The ordeal breaks her, mind, body and spirit. But, she has a chance for revenge, and it won't cost her much. Just a 10 drink minimum, and maybe her soul….
Demon Bradly Baker’s career as a wrestler is over, people don't want to pay to see his brutal style of showmanship anymore. But he's not going down without one more fight….
The Dentist is tired of everyone hating him, despite his talents, and he's about to take the easy way out. Until a man with a sweet tooth comes along and makes him an offer he can't refuse, and he sets off on an interesting new career path instead… Utterly terrifying, pure nightmare fuel, will leave you reeling!
Paulie likes to take full advantage of his stories and his military medals, and tonight he has everyone completely mesmerised…. until you know who turns up and turns things around.
A great blend of stories, with unexpected twists and turns to keep you guessing and page turning!
10 Drink Minimum was a very interesting story. It was my first introduction to books of this extreme/gruesome (compared to King and similar for example)
Tbh, I loved it. I love the plots and twists, the characters and their development, and PANCAKES! Yes, The pancakes in this book was to die for too!
This was definitely a page turner and well worth a read! I didnt want it to end. I can’t wait to read more stories from this Author!
Initially I was intrigued by the cover: “Rasputin eating pancakes?!” I thought to myself.
While an interesting premise, this book does need some seriously proof reading/editing. Also, the Chinese bound their feet historically, not the Japanese.
I think with a re-work it could be something great!
Fast read with an interesting concept and compelling characters. There are plenty of memorable images in there. There were a couple points of detail that I wasn't super keen on (aside from formatting and grammar issues which did not bother me). That being said, it was an engaging read and I hope that there will be a volume 2 at some point. For my sex repulsed peeps: this book contains some spice and quite a bit of SA, approach with caution.
10 Drink Minimum disappointed me because I loved the cover and the summary. It sounded so intriguing and sure to be filled with all kinds of twisted, horrifying things. The actual story, however, was lacking.
The sheer amount of spelling and grammar mistakes were hard to overlook. I try to overlook these types of things to an extent because it's hard to catch absolutely everything, but when there's as many as there were here, it starts to define my reading experience.
The stories told in this anthology don't mesh well together. They have shared characters, sure, but they didn't feel cohesive. I really wanted to see more integration and a bigger overarching theme than just sharing a set of characters amongst them. The dentist's story was probably my favourite because it felt the most fleshed out, but some of the others didn't feel as complete. The psychiatrist felt like an afterthought, and I didn't really understand the significance of the Detective or her "special friend." They felt like an added element just for suspense but I didn't really get anything from their addition.
This also didn't read as horror to me. There were a few horrifying things that happened, but everything else felt watered down enough that those elements lost their impact. I didn't get the punch I was looking for from this, which was really unfortunate.
It seems the author left this open for a sequel based on the way this ended. I'd be willing to give it a chance to see what changes are made because I do see the potential with this author. This just needed a little bit more polishing before release.
This was a fun collection of genie/Faustian stories with a modern twist and a bit of an edge. In this book we watch as a hardened bartender and a mysterious being with an unnatural love for pancakes guide desperate souls to their employer who is all too happy to grant their deepest and darkest wishes...for a price.
The price of admission is 10 drinks of your choosing, for $100 per drink. Oh, and also your eternal soul. Are you willing to pay? How far will you go to get what you desire above all?
As I mentioned before, this is a fun read. As with some indie/self-published works there are a few typos and grammatical errors that may prompt you to re-read a few sentences to understand what the author was trying to convey. Also, not every questionable thing is explained, so try not to expect everything to come together in the end. Some things are just not for the reader to know, or are left to be explained in a possible sequel!
Overall this is a quick novella that is definitely worth the read!
This collection of interlocking tales of what happens after making a deal with a demon is full of comedy, gore, and pure twisted storytelling. It's definitely a testament of, "Be careful what you wish for," as some of the deals take unexpected turns. The overlapping story ties the characters and their individual stories together nicely and is well done. This was a fun and enjoyable read.
This one was very unique to me and very enjoyable. If you enjoy deals with the devil this one is for you. Essentially compromised of shorts that all tie together. I would definitely not be opposed to a follow up! I devoured the whole thing before I had 10 drinks of my own.
There was a formatting issue that bugged me. Page numbers appeared randomly in middle of the page for Kindle version.
I only give 4 stars because of some grammar issues and spelling. Sometimes it took a couple times of reading the sentence to get it. But I super enjoyed the stories! I'm honestly not sure if they were short stories or just chapters. Will definitely be reading more!
2.5 I don't know what to think about this one. This was definitely not horror; at least not for me. It has some gore and nasty things in it. It was somewhat interesting, you have a demon that grants wishes in exchange of your soul and you probably would get played and doomed. I enjoyed the story of the blogger Natasha and the dentist-- other than that the others fell short or non-well-developed. I wonder if this book would have a sequel because of the ending???
The plot of this novella was great. The first story and the story of the dentist were my favorites. I also would like to read a full novella of Emily’s life.
The negative of the story for me would be the editing. The random punctuations make it difficult to follow the story. Grammar and spelling mistakes interrupt the flow of the reading experience. What really bothered me was the changing of the spelling of the character’s names. All that’s keeping this little story from being great is one big edit of the book.
One thing this book will make sure to do is show you the need to be careful what you wish for. 😉
I really liked the ride I took with this one. The way each person was weaved into the big picture was cool. Ever see the movie Crash? This was a nicely twisted tale with a pretty price to pay. The amount of physical and mental anguish was so balanced that it got me right in the feels. I have to say my favorite tale was The Dentist, the way the man's thoughts at the end had me feeling his mental pain and clawed inside me. Last thing Pancakes! Read it to find out what that means!
This could have been a 5-star book, but it has major editing problems, to the point that sometimes it's practically unreadable. Editing problems destroy atmosphere, so it's nothing to laugh about. Even if you ignore them (I did here and usually do - you have to if you read lots of indie horror), they make continuous reading difficult, turning the book into a stuttering mess. So let's talk about the novel this could have been: there's a solid story here, actually an interlinked collection of stories, about a demon inviting people to a bar, the invitation given by someone who really likes pancakes (!), the bar charging a 10 drink minimum, $100 a drink, to allow access to the demon. This makes for some hilarious moments, but also some gory scenes. The true value of the book, however, lies in the people who are invited to the bar: each one with their own story, sometimes after revenge, other times desiring recognition, respect, glory, and sheer control of the narrative. There are five stories overall: a woman who's been sexually assaulted, an old wrestler who's treated unfairly by the suits, a dentist with great skill but a sick soul, a man pretending to be a Vietnam vet, and a female psychiatrist whose charges are some of the other people in the stories. All stories are riveting, well-written, realistic, and always disturbing (i.e., great fun!). The dentist's tale is amazing: the right length, with a satisfying ending and well-developed characters, all given with very little technical means - just good, honest writing, with few similes and even fewer attention-grabbing devices (detailed goriness, heavy metaphorical imagery, etc.) I wish the book had stopped there. It doesn't: there's something going on in the psychiatrist's story I didn't fully grasp; there were some hints that the demon is hunted by a couple of strange people (a detective and, well, someone who doesn't respect first editions!), and this blows up in the psychiatrist's story. But that's it. I have no idea if the author has a sequel in mind? It all ends up unresolved.
This was a fun set of stories set around a demon who enjoys pancakes. He claims he can give his victims what he needs for a small price. The cover caught my attention and for the most part, the stories were great. There is room for a sequel and the author hints at one. My favorite story was the one with the dentist. I have a fear of dentists so that one just reinforced my fear of them. Yet, I found myself enjoying that particular story, hehe.
While I wanted to give the book five stars, there were some grammar issues along with some formatting issues. I saw the reviews but decided to read the book and form my own opinion. Sorry to say, there is some merit to those reviews. Also, the flow was a bit off. However, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the stories.
On an even brighter note, the stories kept me thinking and were unpredictable. Not to mention, dark, which is how I love my horror.
Overall, it's a great set of stories with room for improvement. Still, I can recommend it.
I absolutely love Matt Lutton as an author so I was super excited to read this. There’s also a version of it in Audible read by Joe Hempel, who is the king of narrators, as far as I’m concerned!
Book overview It's usually one or two a night. Some are looking for justice others revenge. They all show up to the bar looking for the Demon though and all that he offers. So kick your feet up and think about your 10 drinks and enjoy the tales that follow. I hope it was worth it
Be careful when you make a deal with a demon, but especially the big man himself! I loved each of the different stories of the poor souls that thought they would be different and unique and prosper in this agreement. The story telling of each of the different characters was fun!! I absolutely loved the sarcastic bartender and how fed up with the whole ordeal he was! Haha. I couldn’t stop listening and got so caught up in all the stories! Such a fun read!
I picked up AND finished 10 Drink Minimum last night by Matthew Lutton. This was a fun one. Stories all within the same universe that start to come together. I will say *ahem* MATT if there's not a sequel I'm going to perish. Just give way to the vapors 😂😂. Have you ever been so angry or desperate that you were more than willing to sell your soul? 10 Drink Minimum takes us through a slew of lives at their highs and lows. What happens to change their life completely and more. This book is an absolute wild ride and I enjoyed it.
Before I go any farther I will note because some people are so irked by it, the ebook has typos and some odd page breaks, it didn't phase me at all but I've seen less complained about.
Please don't miss out on one of the best lines I've ever read, "a Jackson Pollock of horror" and the scene its describing.
This was an interesting concept that needed significant refinement.
I’m all for reading new and upcoming authors, those who are self published, so on and so forth. The most common issue I’ve come across is the need of further editing and 10 Drink Minimum is no different. I also kind of lost the story of the dentist, what did the dolls have to do with the demon? For the ending, what… literally just what? I don’t know if I missed a plot point, skimmed over it, or what, but I had no idea what Emily’s involvement was, what the detectives were after, or what the demon wanted in the long run.
I liked the concept of this a lot but the grammatical errors, formatting errors, and the overall confusion I walked away with warrants this a 2. I will however keep Matthew on my radar for future releases, everyone deserves a second chance.
I don’t know how I feel about this book. Overall the story was pretty good. There was one story in the beginning that was a bit graphic for me, but that is on me and not the author. I saw how they all connected, but it left me with more questions than answers. I think if there is a second book, it would allow for a lot of questions to be addressed. Overall, I really liked the premise and where the book was headed, I’m just not sure that it was fully fleshed out.
I hate even mentioning this (and in no way does this affect my rating), but if this book had a good editor, I think I could’ve enjoyed it quite a bit more. There were so many spelling and punctuation errors that it was a bit distracting for me.
In a bar, which is any bar, except it's not! Welcome to 10 Drink Minimum, a compilation that will have you cringing one moment, curious the next, grossed out, and then asking yourself what in the actual …. Did I just read?
Enter a realm, where you will pay for your 10 drinks, and make your decision. You will choose your path, you were already heading there anyway.
If superb storytelling and relatable characters are your jam, pick this up! You'll thank me later.
This collection of stories is so expertly and brilliantly woven together. It is nothing short of genius!
What would you do if a dude eating pancakes showed up out of the blue and told you his boss could make your wildest dreams come true? That is the basic premise of 10 Drink Minimum. Pancake man visits people at their lowest points and offers them the hookup. They all stupidly take him up on his offer, because why not make deals with demons? What could go wrong?
I listened to the audiobook while following along on my kindle. The kindle version has some formatting issues that probably would have annoyed me if that was the only format. The audiobook is great!
I cant wait for the next installment of 10 Drink Minimum !
I went in blind reading this book , knowing nothing about the author but the title intrigued me . Was I in for a surprise ! I read it in two sittings and enjoyed every tale all linked to the Ominous bar and it's owner ( who also owns souls ) . I would recommend any lover of original ideas/ short stories/interlinking stories full to the brim with horror and characters you love to hate or just hate or love 😉 I cannot wait for his next installment to come out and will read any other work he has published.
Wow.. I feel so torn- it was good, I feel a little guilty saying I enjoyed it. Were they typos and grammatical errors- absolutely, but the story it's self was great and nothing I was expecting.. I found this book by a comment on a Facebook post saying his book was about demons, pancakes, professional wrestling and sex. I had no clue what I was getting into and it took me awhile to understand what was going on, I wish there was more but overall I like it.
I almost stopped reading this book before I finished the first story because the punctuation, grammar, and capitalization was so awful. I decided to push through because the stories were interesting and compelling. I had to force myself to ignore the lack of accurate punctuation to get through the book. With a competent editor this could be quite a good book.
I'm not going to lie. I didnt finish this book. I wanted to. I wanted to really badly. But there were just too many grammatical errors. Between changing the spelling of names (Blak to Black, Grain to Graine, Garret to Garrett) in the same page multiple times, forgetting quotation marks, not capitalizing sentences, randomly capitalized words in the middle of sentences, and so on. I just couldn't do it anymore.
