Verses: Lessons Learned From Foster Care

Rate this book
Each year, nearly 500,000 youth are forcibly removed from their homes and placed with strangers in foster care. Once they become of age, the majority struggle with incarceration, homelessness, and drug abuse. But one woman beat those odds. This book tells the incredible story of Dr. Sharrica Miller, the child of a drug addict mother and dope dealing father, who survived 12 years of foster care and became a nationally recognized speaker, advocate, and foster care researcher. Part memoir, part self-help, Dr. Miller tells stories from her childhood to convey relatable life lessons that will resonate with anyone who is trying to overcome adversity.

A quick and touching read. The book is beautifully written and heart-wrenching. Dr. Miller is able to offer some deep wisdom from what she experienced. I would absolutely read more from this author. Her story is so inspiring and I’m so glad I grabbed this from her at the book fest in Chicago last October!

What I love about this book is how it reads like a personal conversation! From the intensity of the preface to the effective weaving of a 'verse/hook' concept throughout her storytelling (while managing to avoid lessening the emotional impact), this book is an excellent introduction to the author's writing style. It's a quick read; I read it in one day and closed the book wanting to know so much more about Sharrica's story!

Rooted in resilience, transparency, courage, and reflection — Verses is intrinsically an inspiring journey! Clutching verses followed by introspective hooks. This memoir provides a revealing look at foster care and the grit to persevere. Verses is the prelude to a needed film adaptation.

A True Rose in the Concrete

After following Doc for many years on social media, I am in awe of how she never wavered in the face of adversity and continued on her path to what success looked like for her. I am so proud of her resiliency and overall effort to escape being a statistic in the eyes of society. This is a true testament that you can do all things if you set your mind to it.
