BORN OF REVENGEIn search of the Country at the End of the Word and its secrets of forbidden magic, Mimori Touka plunges back into the Land of the Golden-Eyed Monsters. But on the way he's confronted by perilous new the descendants of previous heroes from another world! The E-class underdog must flex his "useless" skills in a battle against their Sword of Courage and leader, the indominable Lewin Seale.
The overall beats of the story are fine, but the execution is just terrible. Ten new, named antagonists are going to make themselves known in this novel. You get their stupid backstory interrupting the flow of the narrative. You experience the (standard) immoral dickishness that every antagonist has in this world. It's all the same. And you also know it won't matter, because they're all going to die soon enough.
The fight scenes are... okay. There's mind games and an overlong string of battles; this might matter if you thought the antagonists were anything more than goons for our MC to gank. But they're not. And I'm just left wondering why all that page count was wasted documenting the deaths of minor speed bumps. This novel is filler.
This is sold as volume 6 of 6 but leave you nowhere near an ending to at least this arc of the story and even adds a kind of cliffhanger in the epilogue, so I'm slightly confused as to it is labelled the way it is. The story is very good, I like the protagonist and most of the other characters, I'd hoped to hear more about the goddess' motivations in this volume, I know that there are at least three more volumes already in Japanese waiting to be translated and I'm looking forward to continuing with this journey until the end.
I feel like this series is coming into its own a little bit as it becomes more a story about the wider cast and less myopically focused on the protagonist. I do feel bad for the author that he lives in a world where he thinks stocking his story with 50% raving narcissists is reasonable; he writes them very well, but I hope he isn't as surrounded by them in real life as his fantasy world.
The characters and the story is so engaging that I can’t bring myself to stop reading them. I’ve read 6 of these books in one month and I have enjoyed every moment and not regretted a single penny!
The story became rather slow. Well, this is the latest in the translation. The ending quite cliff hanging, but usually this is only posed as click bait. 🤣 Let see the next volume, hope the calm would be over and there would be a massive plot in the next volume
In a series full of irredeemable characters, the worst group of human supremacists has appeared in front of our MC. The author seems to be going out of his way to make all the antagonists hopelessly vile, so we won’t question the need for their disposal. I guess that is just a common trope in these types of stories. We also get some confirmation of feelings, but our MCs appear to be taking baby steps.
About 30% of this Book 6 is closure on the battles and conversations of Book 5, so, I cannot understand why all of these closures happen on another book and not Book 5. The rest of it is Touka and his retinue destroying the Goddess' plans to conquer the Beast-kin (beast-folk) people that are hiding in the barren lands. Not as action-packed as Book 5, and by the pace of Book 6 this light novel series is going to take forever to conclude.
