‘Shadows over Pemberley’ is a dramatic Pride and Prejudice variation that dares to bring a character from Darcy’s past into the present. Love, hate, longing, deception and happiness, all human feelings mingle in a low angst plot which unexpectedly fulfils one of Darcy’s most secret wishes. A visit to Derbyshire occasions Elizabeth and Darcy to meet in the splendour of Pemberley, both eager to forget and be forgiven. But in the middle of their promising reunion, clouds gather in the clear sky of their love. News from Longbourn interrupts their path to happiness with doubts and questions, while a solution is sought to prevent Lydia from besmirching the Bennets’ honour. When a new journey to Pemberley is decided upon, nobody suspects that it will only be the beginning of an eerie quest for a past that has not died and cannot be forgotten. More in love than ever, Elizabeth and Darcy start an adventure together that will mark a powerful beginning for their life together at Pemberley.
The premise here is there is a mystery at Pemberley having to do with the death of Darcy’s mother. Working through the mystery is well done but the mystery itself is far fetched.
On top of that Lizzie is written as very mercurial and I found it difficult to like this version of Lizzie.
What a great story....and what a great twist....with new character and old villans ...but the secret is the most amazing turn of events....it's a page turning excellent story. It will not dispoint I feel the arc of the story keeps giving and I wouldn't got to bed til I finished ....Excellent
An amazing job of taking an alternative path and filling it with intrigue and an unexpected mystery. I loved the romance between our dear couple and how everything conspires to bring them closer. The original characters are relatable and add to the story, and the usual suspects don't have a lot to say or do.
Warning: Meant for mature audiences. Contains scenes that would scandalize the ton. Readers of a delicate constitution are advised to keep their fans and vinaigrettes close at hand.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is the second edition of the ‘Shadows over Pemberley’. The story is re-published with a new cover and a few additions to the old plot, but it brings nothing essentially new to the readers who already purchased or read it. This is a dramatic story that dares to bring a character from Darcy’s past into the present. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.
Elizabeth goes to Pemberley and stays with the Darcy family and is thrust into a mystery. Lady Anne died under mysterious circumstances and the dying Rector in Lambton wants to explain what actually happened to Elizabeth and have her tell Darcy. Unfortunately he's suffered a stroke and needs assistance which is Mary Bennet who discovered letters regarding Lady Anne who actually is probably alive. Darcy and Elizabeth along with friends of his parents travel to the Isle of Mann and make a shocking discovery - Mrs Grace is a beautiful widow who plays the organ in Church and has dreams of living in a huge beautiful estate with her 2 children! I enjoyed this especially when Mr Bennet takes control of Lydia and refused to pay either Wickhams debts (5 thousand pounds!) or pay him to marry Lydia. Mrs Bennet loses her pea brain and tries to demand that Bingley pay for Lydia regardless of the cost - 2 years income? The sheer audacity of Mrs Bennet is astounding... Lydia is sent to stay with Darcy's god mother who tames her into more acceptable behaviour! Elizabeth is strong in this story and supports Darcy and Georgiana when their world is upturned! Jane shows more of a backbone in refusing her mother and purchasing an estate away from Meryton! Mary loses Fordyce and gains friends and a husband. Kitty learns to stand on her own without Lydia and Mr Bennet finally learns to take control of his family! We are spared both Caroline Bingley and Lady Catherine/Mr Collins ( they go together). Its an awesome story and well done by a talented writer!
Elizabeth Bennet and the Gardiners are on their tour of Pemberley. Upon their discovery, they are invited to stay at that great house rather than return to the inn. A VERY dramatic Elizabeth second guesses every statement and event while her aunt and uncle try to keep her grounded. Fitzwilliam Darcy is doing everything he can to let her know that he still has feelings for her. In the midst of all this there is Wickham drama and the shadow of a secret. The remainder of the story is less Lizzy's dramatics and more of the emotion related to the secret's resolution and a happily ever after for our dear couple.
I had a hard time reading this book because I don't enjoy that "style" for Elizabeth.
Every variation changes some thing, be it adding in Darcy’s side of the story to an entirely new set of characters. This one has some angst, not much. The story is more about people changing, accepting hard truths, and forgiving. I admit I do not like when Darcy has any relatives from his side of the family, but I do not mind at all when the Matlock side does! This story has a gentle hand when it comes to the new characters, provides a different voice to the old (it’s really hard to sound like Jane Austen and they had far fewer words to work with than we do now. In terms of the Darcys, Bingleys, and Bennets, nothing essential has changed. This story adds new depth in a unique eat I don’t believe I have come across before. Definitely recommend it.
I thought this novel was an exceptional novel with a great story to tell! I enjoyed the twists and turns and kept thinking all along that I knew the answer as to what would happen next. Boy, was I mistaken. Many new characters were in this novel along with many of the old, original characters that added interesting facts. I won't go into the plot as to give away some of the interesting facts that kept me guessing. However, I will say, Lydia is Lydia and always is getting into trouble in the same way. Darcy is always there to help out for Lizzy's sake. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and gave it a 5 star review for the fact it was an excellent plot and so much different from many that I have read!!!!
I don't really know what to say about this book. It was simply amazing! Lady Anne......OMG! (That's all I'm going to say, about that) Oh! Colonel Fitzwilliam will always be Richard to me! Arthur? Please!
Enjoyable read. Well developed with enough twist on the original theme to be interesting. Darcy and Elizabeth's story was less challenging, since they both seemed decided with little effort.
This is a must read for all Jane Austin fanfiction lovers. however, now I must read all the rest of her books. If they are half as enjoyable as this one, it will truly be happy reading. Thank you, Ms. Gold for such a wonderful book.
Florence Gold has a way of making you angry, heartbroken and sad. Then she springs on you angst and a mixture of jealousy. Stir in some love, surprise and a happy ever after.
Good read but slow in places there is a secret about Lady Anne's death hanging over Pemberley which needs to be solved before our dear couple can tie the knot.
