Alice and the Devil

‘Yes, I can see ghosts,’ she said.
‘That’s why she told me to come here. Because you can help us. You can help grandad and me. You can help us defeat him.’
‘Him?’
‘Yes, him. The Devil.’

A boy crosses the moors in a storm to plead for Alice’s help, claiming to be sent by a ghost.

Is the boy’s grandfather really being terrorised by the Devil himself? Alice can’t quite believe it – but then she’s experienced things she'd never imagined could come true. But even with her paranormal experiences, little does she expect the horror she is about to face at the lonely rectory overlooking the moors…

A fitting end to the trilogy!

Another page turner of a book featuring the intrepid ghost whispering Alice. On this occasion she was pitted against a cult of Satanists attempting to converse with a long dead black magician. Not the meaning of life more the meaning of death. A bit improbable at times but, if you suspend your natural scepticism, this is a rip roaring tale of supernatural thrills and spills.

I’ve read the previous Ghosts of Alice stories, The Boy in the Burgundy Hood and The Girl in the Ivory dress and enjoyed them both… well, as much as you can enjoy getting the creepy crawlies. I admit ghost stories are not my go to read especially as I do most of my reading at night. By coincidence, it was a dark, cold, rainy and howling night when I opened the book to the very first page describing a soaked and fearful Ben trying to find the right house…the house where Alice lived. What really gave me the chills was when Ben described the lit windows as eyes and doors as a mouth which brought back memories from a long time ago, setting the stage for me to read this ghost story sometimes holding the book in a death grip and other times listening intently for sounds going bump in the night.

The story is fast paced and choppy in all the right places giving it that surreal sense of foreboding and climaxing with the last piece of the puzzle snapping into place. Griffin excels in descriptive atmospheric passages, backdrops and pulling the reader into the story. I knew when I opened the book that I was there with Ben. I also noticed the absence of the very handsome Aitor…

A Ghostly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is book 3 of Alice’s ghost stories and probably the most gruesome of them. I don’t want to give away any spoilers as this is a brand new book and I believe people should read based on the blurb which is, in my view, what the author feels comfortable telling us. Despite her insecurities and with the help of her basque friend Aitor, Alice battles the devil himself. But… does she? Cults based on greed both moral and spiritual, members of the cleric doing unspeakable things, a child that actually talks to ghosts. All this made for a very perfect October read. I do recommend this book and this series especially if you like horror books.

I wanted to read a ghost story and picked Alice and the Devil because I was intrigued by the title and blurb, particularly the idea of the devil being involved in some way. I hadn’t realised that it was the third in the series (it does say) but that didn’t matter at all. It works well as a standalone book and has enticed me to read more in the series.

The main character, Alice, has had experience of the paranormal, so when I young boy turns up on her doorstep and says a ghost has sent him to her to ask for help, she feels obliged to get involved. His grandfather is sick and there is evil at the Rectory across the moors where they both live.

Evil is an understatement! The descriptions of the scenes throughout the book are well written. The atmosphere the author created at times made me feel genuinely scared at some points. He provided a great balance between characterisation, setting and action, so much so that I found it difficult to put down, even though I knew I was likely to be terrified if I read on!

A terrific ghost story – well worth a read.

ALICE AND THE DEVIL is the 3rd book in The Ghosts of Alice series.
Here we pick up a while after the second book, although we still feel the impact and turmoil Alice feels from past events. Just when life should be giving Alice a break, some peace and rest, a young boy comes knocking...

We are surrounded by windswept moorland, a remote house, and dark stormy nights. A young boy, his ailing grandad, a stranger and an odd group of people… And the Devil. Add a macabre slice of history, the occult and buckets full of heart-stopping, seat-gripping terror, and you have a winner.

I love that these books, THE GHOSTS OF ALICE series, have everything I love in brilliantly crafted ghost stories. And, although they are all standalone books, you can certainly just pick one up and not stagger bewilderingly around wondering what's going on. However, that said, I urge you to read them all in order; your reading experience will be enriched for it.

Such a brilliant read! Steve Griffin does it again, not that I ever doubted it, but ALICE AND THE DEVIL had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Thoroughly recommended.

This is the third in the Ghosts of Alice series and I think it’s the best one yet. Alice finds herself in a cottage in Yorkshire helping a young boy who, like her, has the ability to communicate with ghosts – and possibly even The Devil. This was a page-turner of a story which I read really quickly, despite wanting to linger over the beautifully written prose. In particular, the descriptions of weather are extremely atmospheric, turning the bleak weather itself into a character in its own right. A perfect Halloween read – or indeed a perfect read for any time of the year. A real treat.

Alice and the Devil, by Steve Griffin, is downright scary. Mr. Griffin is a master of the eerie and ghostly, and this is book three in The Ghosts of Alice series. Each book is a stand-alone masterpiece of the supernatural. I’ve read all three and each tale is original and terrifying in its own way. I’ve become a fan. What ties them together is Alice Deaton, a young woman who can not only see ghosts, but can get inside their heads. She solves the mystery of their ghosting, but often at great peril to herself.

In Alice and the Devil, the evil that haunts a young boy and his beloved grandfather, is bought to Alice’s doorstep, literally. A terrified boy has crossed the moors during a storm, to reach Alice, because a frightening ghost, called the Grackle, has told him to do so; has told him that Alice is the only person who can save his grandad from the Devil. The boy and grandfather, a retired pastor, live in an old rectory. That the Devil wants his grandfather is particularly disturbing. Alice finds herself taking on the challenge. And it is quite a challenge. Griffin creates all the feels you look for in a spooky tale. His atmospheric achievements are all one could hope for if one is looking for a shiver down their spine. His writing is beautiful. There is a wonderful history behind these hauntings; a big plus in a good ghost story. There is more than meets the eye and danger unfolds on many levels. Strange characters add additional eeriness to the mystery. The urgency builds and the climax is an adrenaline pumping one. If you love a great ghost tale and a satisfying ghostly plot, you will love Alice and the Devil. And don’t miss The Boy in the Burgundy Hood or The Girl in the Ivory Dress, the two other books in The Ghosts of Alice series. Have a fright fest!

I came into the book with high expectations as the reviews on here and Amazon suggest a flawless book about a demon haunting. Yet for me it lacked in quite a few areas. For example, I think the beginning is slightly rushed as Ben meeting Alice is sudden and isn’t built on up until the encounter; the encounters with the devil were too quick and early on and not enough suspense for me.

Build up is too quick.

The best scene was when she and this Spanish lad find the freaky satanists on Jackson’s Rocks. This setting was described very well.

The individual evil freaks are characterised well; some strong/ young/ women were odd like the men; hell, one woman even stripped off completely to distract Aitor!

Archie was a weird bloke and hence his possession from the demon is well done at the end but could also metaphorically represent his delusional and deranged nature.

The book unfortunately suffers from the cheap amazon printing.

Overall good but not excellent. Would recommend however.

The third in The Ghosts of Alice series, this instalment finds Alice alone in an isolated cottage in the Peak District in the middle of a storm. Add to that a creepy vicarage that’s haunted, a strange boy and his elderly grandfather, and a cult of devil worshippers, and you have a book you literally cannot put down.

A short and intense read, I raced through the pages as Alice tried to communicate with the uneasy spirits to discover why they were lingering and what they wanted. Is it possible the devil roams the bleak English countryside?

With the return of one of my favourite characters from the previous book, a heart-stopping race to save an innocent boy’s life, and the author’s characteristic superb writing, I thoroughly enjoyed the tale and read it almost in one sitting.

Although I am not usually a lover of spooky and paranormal tales, the Alice series has just enough spookiness to make me jump but not so much that I cannot sleep at night. It is a fantastic set of books that well deserve the five stars I have awarded them.

After reading the first two books in this series, I knew what to expect from the author; foreboding atmosphere, a gripping pace, and a whole lotta spook. But from the opening scene where a terrified Ben races across the moors to Alice in the middle of a stormy night to ask for help with the Devil tormenting his grandfather, I knew Griffin had upped the fright factor—so much so, that I could only read this story during safe, bright daylight.

As always, Griffin’s writing is superb. He builds tension masterfully, making it impossible to put the book down. Disquiet builds from the first page, and with Alice still fragile from her previous experience with the supernatural, her inner narrative as she forces herself to face the evil in Ben’s house had me almost paralysed myself. On the face, griffin’s characters appear to be normal, everyday people, so their seemingly mundane-ness makes it all the more disturbing when their darker sides are revealed. Case in point, when Alice meets the environmental group and her danger radar pings.

This is one of my favourite horror series, and with each book building on Alice’s abilities, and the events taking us to darker places, it just gets better and better. I was delighted with the return of Aitor, even if he did get a rough go of it in this adventure. I don’t know if the author plans to write another for this series, but I hope so. I feel as if Alice is only getting to grips with her ability to commune with the dead, and am excited to see how her character develops. An easy five stars.

Steve Griffin is a master at writing ghost stories that grip you from the very beginning and keep you enthralled every step of the way.

Alice and the Devil is the third standalone novel in The Ghosts of Alice series, about a young woman with an unusual connection to the dead.

A young boy crosses the moors in a storm to ask for Alice’s help. He says he’s been told by a ghost to find her, as she’s the only person who can help him and his granddad.

I think this is the best book yet in the series. It has a couple of gory scenes but it’s a fantastic story.

I highly recommend it for ghost story lovers. This is a must read!

Alice and the Devil is the third book in the Ghosts of Alice series, and I have to say, I for one am glad that it's a series. Alice and the Devil is a great read. It's filled with fast-paced drama because it's more than just a ghost story. The tension is expertly built into a thrilling conclusion. I really like how the author is growing Alice's character. She learns more about her gifts with each ghost that she encounters and her confidence is now starting to build. I loved her attitude in this book! Not only that but she's building a posse of trusted confidants. You'll fall in love with Aitor too, trust me.

This is the third book by Steve Griffin that I've read, and as expected, he's knocked it out of the park once again! If you're a fan of the other Ghosts of Alice books, then I don't need to sell you on Alice and the Devil.

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with Steve Griffin's paranormal series, I'll put it simply: if you're in the mood for some excellently paced paranormal horror that hits all the marks, I highly suggest you pick up any of the Alice books. While there are some references to previous entries, I think new readers could pick up Alice and the Devil and find themselves following right along without issue.

Keep them coming, Steve!

Steve Griffin is the Scare Master! This third book in the series is fast-paced with a good balance of tension and action. At times, the tension was so high, I had to put the book down because my heart was racing. The author continues to excel at setting atmospheric scenes. Wind, rain, darkness, and an aged rectory are all brought to life with a sinister history and characters you can't fully trust. I loved the heroine teaming up with her trusty paranormal researcher pal. I enjoyed seeing the two of them work together to solve the mystery. I highly recommend this story to any one who loves their ghost stories with a side of action.

This one started out strong for me, with an intriguing start as Alice tried to help the boy and his grandfather. I liked the description of the Devil and thought the build up to this was creepy. Unfortunately I lost interest about halfway through; I didn't find it scary enough to hold my attention, so by about 74% I started skimming just to see how it ended. Maybe it just wasn't for me.

I've read all the Alice books now. Just fab. Strong, well written women, no claggy romance, stories that are wonderfully unpredictable and not a witch in sight! Just bloody good ghost stories .

I love it when I feel slightly short of breath when reading a ghost story because I feel like I'm there with the characters. I felt like that throughout the story and I sort of didn't want it to end.
