The mind is a marvel. It’ s at the centre of our most rewarding experiences. It lets in awe and laughter, love and wisdom, and helps us overcome life’ s great trials. It’ s our greatest asset, but it can also be our greatest adversary, allowing in self-doubt, anxious thoughts and depression. It can magnify our fears and undermine our best intentions, and lead us into life’ s darkest corners. Based on James O’ Loghlin and Professor Ian Hickie’ s popular podcast, Minding Your Mind is an exploration into everything you’ ve ever wanted to know about how the mind works, and the thoughts and emotions that steer our lives. It also offers practical strategies on how we can understand, change and improve our mental health, covering such topics * Burn-out and depression * Hope and despair * Trust and trauma * Humour and community * Trauma and addiction * Anger and self-control * Managing our body clocks * Navigating life’ s crises * The importance of social connection and community Written with compassion and curiosity, warmth and humour, Minding Your Mind is for anyone who wants the best for their mental well-being but might not know the best way to get there.
A great introduction for those who are curious or don't know much about Minding Your Mind. For me, I'm a little more advanced, so it was more of an overview of many conditions, which is fine, and I skimmed over mosts of it. I gave it a 3 star rating, personally I would have rated it lower, however I didn't think that was fair, as it's perfect for those starting out learning about their mind. Also what is great is that it has local information (for Australia) many books come from the US, so it's good to see local resources. A great springboard for those wanting to learn more.
A book that mostly repeats what the health departments and research have been preaching for the past few years: increase exercise, decrease stress, eat healthy, seek healthy relationships, etc. Mostly stuff I knew, though I particularly liked this book's emphasis on the body clock and how that impacts mental health. Overall, an informative audiobook that was easy to follow and consolidated the information I mostly knew.
Good overview on mental health conditions and basic advice on working through and within them. Good for someone as a starting point ion a range of issues.
Story time: I bought this book in between $7 Cinema Nova Monday screenings. I was at Readings and I was thinking of getting a book for my 40th, when this old man shoved this book into my hands.
I’m almost 42 now, and all this time this book has collected dust in my bedside. Picked it up again this year and I just realised this was conversations compiled from a podcast, which is why it read weird, at the beginning. The last part was helpful but what a relief!!! I’ve finished it!!!
pretty good overview on "minding your mind" and basic advice that is often repeated in the media: exercise, decrease social media use, meditate, decrease stress, eat healthy, etc.
would be a good starting point for those who don't know much about mental health and the benefits of looking after yourself mentally.
How could this ex-psychiatrist, write a book on helping people with the mind, when he malpractices as a psychiatrist, does not help patients, uses patients, and intrudes. He is completely a fraud and corrupt, this book is nonsense to him and everyone. Hiding under lies. Come forth Ian Hickie.
I listened to this on audiobook format. I liked the straightforward, no bs tone of this book. So many self help, pop psychology books just come across as phoney, trite, forced or just too much, in general . This one doesn’t. I need to check out the related podcast.
