Darkly She Goes

Rate this book
Once upon a time there was a fallen knight, who believed that saving a princess would allow him to atone for his crimes. Once upon a time there was a dark princess, who believed that it was up to her to atone for the crimes of her parents... Banished for a fault that forever taints his reputation, Arzhur wanders from tavern to field of battle in search of the next contract which will fill his purse. One night, three mysterious old women offer him to regain honor and fortune if he frees the daughter of a neighboring king, held captive in the ruins of an abandoned castle. But Islen is not the damsel in distress that he expected to save... Magnified by the virtuoso art of Vincent Mallié, Hubert questions the weight of family heritage and delivers, under the finery of a tale, an intimate reflection on our inner monsters. Darkly She Goes is an ode to redemption where determinism and free will clash, carried by two masters of the fantasy genre.

Remember friends: always ask the Princess if she wants to be rescued first. And also why or why not. Darkly She Goes begins as a standard fare fantasy of a knight riding off to rescue a princess trapped in a tower and quickly descends into something much darker and dynamic. French author Hubert (translated L. Benson) delivers this menacing tale of “once upon a time” full of fascinating twists and treachery that truly make you gallop headlong into the narrative brought to life by artist Vincent Mallié’s detailed and delightful artwork. This is a story of spoiled reputations with nowhere left to turn, of bloodshed and betrayal, but also one where love might be the key to survival. A wild and violent ride, Darkly She Goes is a gripping adult fairy tale graphic novel that I simply could not look away from.

Our journey begins with Arzhur, a disgraced knight who’s back is against the wall of poverty and public disdain and accepts a deadly mission for some coin. And while Princess Islen may indeed be stuck in a ruined castle surrounded by monsters, her situation is much more complicated that Arzhur could possibly imagine. And the fate of a kingdom is now at stake…

This story hits hard. Just when you think you know where it is headed things take dramatic twists and each revelation of the past adds more tension and trauma to the maelstrom of violence. The second act does well by really making the outlook feel hopeless as the story also latches on to how the frailties and infidelities of men always plunge everyone into disaster. The past is a horror show and I don’t want to spoil anything but there are a lot of key players and the villains that are always lurking are all quite well done. This story does well by keeping things very dark and very threatening.

I really enjoyed the characters and their dynamics here. Islen is a very empathetic focal character and her mystical secrets propel the plot quite well. I also enjoyed the flawed Arzhur who is trying to redeem his past, has the bravery to keep on going but also a kindness that really makes him shine. He’s supportive of Islen but also attempts to not eat meat because she does not (a very key part of her character…you’ll see). I did not love the whole reason he’s an outcast and the sexpest but not harmful angle though. Still when together they are easy to root for, even with the flaws.

I also just really loved the art in this one. The colors are great, it’s very detailed, the framework is wonderful and it really pulls the story forward. It’s just fantastic really. Also there are some amazing battle scenes:

And all the landscape scenes and scenery is delightful too. Just solid artwork here.

Darkly She Goes is a big story with a lot of big twists and thrills. It’s one it’s probably best knowing as little about the story and their background as possible the better as the book really slowly teases out information in ways that make it hit with quite the impact. Gonna be honest, I spaced out and at work and read this in one go, it’s so captivating and Darkly She Goes is a fun and ferocious graphic novel.

DARKLY SHE GOES is a sword-and-sorcery dark fairytale with gorgeous, highly detailed artwork.

I was afraid this would be a goo-goo-eyes love story, but it was not. On top of being stunned by the illustrations, I became more and more engaged as the graphic novel went on. The characters have depth and nuance, and as the story unfolds readers realize that it has many layers and there are no true heroes or villains.

Although DARKLY isn’t perfect, it shows a lot greater sense of equality and personal agency than most fantasy stories. And---wonder of wonders, we have a sympathetic MC, Islen, who is not only compassionate to animals (and has the power to communicate with them), but also disapproves of killing them for food and refuses to eat meat. Even better, her companion, Arzhur, while not fully comprehending of her values, still shows respect for them. That’s right—no mansplaining her “silly” compassion away or cruelly taunting her. I was genuinely impressed. Arzhur also tries to make kinder choices when he’s with Islen, choosing not to hunt or consume animals. This brings him into direct conflict with his family—who demand that he conform to their lifestyle and values. (Yep, that checks out.) He capitulates, reluctantly. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and hopefully it continues on a way that is sensitive to Islen’s convictions.

Which brings us to the ending—that was quite a cliffhanger! I am sure readers would riot if we didn’t get a sequel.

This dark fantasy graphic novel was SO gorgeous! I had to read it twice just to fully absorb the incredible illustrations and colour palette accompanying the story.

A disgraced knight is hired to rescue a princess from a castle guarded by monsters. But what if she doesn’t want to be rescued? And what if the only monster wears a beautiful face instead?

This was such an enthralling story that mixes a fairytale plot with thrilling action and dark vengeance! If you’re into graphic novels, you HAVE to read this one!

What begins as a standard fantasy with a knight setting out to rescue a damsel in distress keeps taking odd steps and dark turns, pulling me right along the whole way through.

ooh i REALLY wanted to like this one more than i did...no complaints on the art or aesthetic, i really enjoyed that - there are some BEAUTIFUL scenes here and i love how the action/battle scenes were done. i guess i was into it conceptually but really just wanted more from the execution? like the plot was so archetypal that i found it hard to connect with the characters or really care too much about what was happening because i spent the whole time waiting for something interesting and fresh to happen and it just....didn't. sad because i was really excited for this one! also can we please please for the love of god retire the 'man is so sad and tragic and hated because woman falsely accused him of rape and it ruined his reputation even though he's a Good man with a Noble soul' plotline PLEASE. i'm so over it

Quite dark fairy tale (or even folk tale maybe) that has it's ups and downs.
There few sudden changes of mood and motivation in main characters and writer's shortcuts.
Story is using know tropes, but at the end I wasn't really sure what was the main message, or if there was even one.
Some scenes were quite dark, some didn't make much sense.

In the second book there was quite significant switch to relationships and sex, that didn't fit whole concept I would say...

It wasn't terrible to read, but not something that I would feel urge to read again either. Art is quite good, holding whole thing just above the water.

Šta ja to pričam?! Svi su ovde i dobri i loši. Svako ima obe strane novčića u sebi.

Crteži su me privukli još kad sam ovo izdanje video u pripremi.

A wonderful and short comic by Hubert and masterfully drawn by Vincent Mallié. It starts as a standard fantasy affair, rescuing a princess trapped in a tower, but as it continues, it becomes bolder, daring, and contains interesting twists. This can be considered a dark fairy tale and an intriguing subversion of the Arthurian legend. Each section only gets better, and each revelation adds further complexity to the narrative. Islen and Arzhur are both flawed and realistic characters who have complicated pasts and are trying to move on from that phase of their lives, but it is easier said than done. Themes of honour, jealousy, power, journeys… a lot of the themes typically associated with Arthurian legend are explored rather well, especially for such a short comic book that is 160 pages altogether. Especially how everything ties back to the ending, which was rather fitting.

The artwork is truly stunning to say least. The colours pop, it’s extremely detailed, the panel work is excellent, a lot brilliant landscape and depiction of emotions all around. Capturing the intended atmosphere of this medieval fantasy setting. The less you know the better it is, I read this in less than 2 hours and it’s 100% worth it.

8/10

This is definitely a dark fairytale for adults the artwork is very nice and the story is very detailed and very dark at times it definitely shows how love can redeem everything and can change how people behave and we can become a better person I do recommend this but this is definitely more for an older audience

The artwork was amazing and the story kept you hooked from the start.
But I truly have no idea what message this book was trying to convey. There were so many moments of “this is the villain, no THIS is the villain” that in the end all you need to know is all the characters were assholes trying to one-up each other on how much trauma they could cause the female protagonist.

Amazing art (although I didn't always love the panel choices), and a story with a lot of depth and twists in a short amount of time. Loved the creatures and horror elements!

The pace of this is good - it moves quickly and doesn't waste time. Some trade-offs for the speed are that the story gives some side characters some short change (especially the side kick, who ultimately succumbs to tropes), large chunks of time get skipped (I mean, what happens in that time doesn't really matter; alrhough, a suitor arriving suddenly felt like I was missing pages), and you sometimes have to go back to an action-sequence panel to understand what big thing just happened. Ultimately, though, I think these trade-offs are worth it for the good clip this moves at.

Dialogue felt a bit forced and the "love story" angle of this also felt forced/insincere - but, this does really come together and surprised me!!

Recommend! Especially for children of divorce lmao.

Translated from French, NBM Graphic Novels presents Darkly She Goes from the creative team of Hubert and Vincent Mallié—a dark fantasy epic about family legacy, reputation, and redemption. The story begins with the Arzhur, a knight long since fallen out of favor who spends his time drinking and fighting in between taking whatever job will put coin in his pocket. When three strange, old women approach him with a job, Arzhur is intrigued by their promise—rescue the missing princess of a neighboring kingdom and regain his honor. It is the opportunity he has waited for.

I have to start this of by completing the art. Because wow that was out of the world gorgeous!

I really like the premise of the story. It’s a really interesting concept and something I would definitely love to see more of. Although I have to say that the execution was a bit underwhelming at times. I feel like the author put to much time in the wrong places and it was really bothersome that it was so unevenly paced. We get panels upon panels of conversation between the characters, where they explain their past and other information. I had no problem with reading that, it was interesting to follow. But the problem comes when you sacrifice other parts of the story to make it so. The battle scenes for example was over in only a few panels, making it hard to follow. This story liked to tell instead of show and I found that a bit disappointing.

A fairy tale for adults, with hints of Arthurian legend. A down-and-out knight is commissioned by three creepy women to rescue a princess from a castle full of monsters. Turns out the monsters were her friends and she didn't want to be rescued. This leads him to getting embroiled in her history, and eventually, she gets embroiled into his. The art is great. The characters and story are done well.

Wow. That was amazing. And for most of the way through it was a solid four star. Surprisingly good. Complicated but logical. With beautiful but slightly odd art. Perhaps a slight bit predictable. And then it wasn't. I read so much and so much of it is at best okay. I feel jaded like it is not the material that can't be appreciated, that instead it is me. And the one of these comes along. Or more.

Absolutly stunning book! When I was just a little kid I used to read horrible fairytales and get a lovely dark feeling of dread and magic, and its a eeling i dont often get to feel as an adult.

But this made me feel like that again. And amazing artwork. Give it a read now!

I really enjoyed the story, characters, and artwork although I was sad it ended in tragedy but perhaps the fact it left me emotional means it was impactful as I try to figure out why a tragedy was chosen rather than a happily ever after ending.
