This feels a little like a missed opportunity. There are snippets of interesting tales, and as a (nano)brewer I took away some intriguing ideas. But that I think highlights one of the issues, to enjoy the book I think you need at least a working knowledge of brewing.
The text is peppered with references to gravities of beers (and often in fairly dull lists of, "this type of beer was brewed at 1.087 in 1830, but by 1860 was 1.068, and by 1900 was 1.047"), and I think I came away from the chapter explaining the shilling terminology even more confused than when I started.
Too many of the interesting tales end abruptly, and are explained with seemingly less passion than a list of breweries, and the book itself seems to just 'stop' all of a sudden.
Interesting enough in itself if you are a brewer, but if you're after a rip-roaring tale... That truly entertaining history of beer book seems still to be written.
Worth mentioning, though, that it is beautifully bound and looks and feels great.
