The Coroner

Rate this book
Six centuries have passed since the last pestilence almost consumed the race of Men. The Royal Order of Coroners has stood as a bastion of peace against the horrors that plague the Kingdom of Solarno. Now, on the eve of Harvest season, a rolling wall of dark, ominous clouds reaches the Border-realm. Bringing a turbid fog that blocks out the sun and sours the land. A blood moon rises in a pitch-black, fog-laden night. Along with it a horde of unsightly beasts. Riding out to meet the storm is a single coroner, Resurrectionist Paolo Reveré. The Coroner is the last sentinel standing between the innocent people of the realm and a bestial pestilence of murder and melancholy. Justice must be served, and order must be restored. Be it by flame or by cold forged steel.

As a fan of the crime/mystery genre, I decided to give the Coroner a read after it was recommended to me. I normally don't read fantasy but the title had me intrigued. After starting the book, I found that I had a hard time putting it down. The author knows his forensics! Even for a story that is based in a fantasy world, I was truly mesmerized by his attention to detail in the detective portion of the story. Beyond that, the constant building of suspense and tension following the coroner was masterfully written. I would say that the Coroner is a title that transcends fantasy, covering portions of crime/mystery that would entertain even the most removed fans of the fantasy genre. The illustrations in the book were an added bonus, getting a visual of what the author was describing just gave me chills. The vocabulary was what I was expecting from an educated author, it was more robust but nothing that took me from the narrative. I am going to recommend this title to people in my book club, great job Nate Fitch!

Gripping and thought provoking. Dark fantasy like you have never read. This author has created everything, even his own languages. It was the most in depth lore and culture driven book I have read in a long time. I would highly recommend this to die hard fantasy fans.

This book was a perfect blend of horror and fantasy! I have always seen myself as more of a horror fan than a fantasy lover but I found the Coroner to be a perfect blend of both literary genres. I know the book is a dark fantasy and don't worry it definitely is a fantasy novel but I felt like the author did an amazing job at blending the horror themes within his fantasy world building and story telling. I would recommend it to anyone who likes both horror and fantasy, especially if you are into your monsters! The author does a great job creating new and terrifying ghouls and beasties. The description was breathtaking as well! Can't wait for more from this author.

This is by far one of the best books I have read in 2022. It is a shame that it came out so late in the year only to be buried underneath the end of the year book dump. If you are a lover of all things dark and gritty, be it fantasy or horror, then this IS the book for you. It is plague doctors meets van helsing meets underworld meets the Black Plague meets Lovecraft meets Sherlock Holmes meets lord of the rings. And I could just keep going. Nate Fitch has put some serious work into this first book of the Plague Hunter series. I mean I saw the guy has a PhD but to create new fantasy languages is going above and beyond in my book. The detail in the story is layered in so much attention to detail, with parts of our own world history mixed with the ravings of a mad mind from the author. A true mad scientist! (pun-intentional). If you are looking for a great dark read, pick this up now!

A hidden gem that I am grateful for discovering this fall. This is one of those books that is going to become big, it just has all the elements of an outstanding fantasy book. The illustrations by William Heavey are amazing, add to the story, and help flush out the dark and hideous creatures that Author Nate Fitch has created all on his own. I hope the second book comes out soon, as this was so good I was left wanting more of the world, races, cultures, plot, orders, and everything in between. It is set up for readers who crave a deep plunge into their fantasy, and so I can only imagine it is going to get better from here. Read this book!

The Coroner is a fresh breath of fantasy life that I believe has been missing in contemporary fantasy fiction. This world is entirely brand new! New races, new monsters, new hero’s, new languages, cultures. And I believe it was all done masterfully. If you find yourself tired of the same fantasy tropes, then look no further.
Nate Fitch has seriously flushed out his dark fantasy world with this definitive volume collection of Lazar Perish. After following both parts 1 and 2, but with 4 more chapters. A complete appendices section, and full illustrations!! I haven’t seen a fantasy book with full illustrations in a long time. Very retro of the author, love it. If you are a fantasy fan, dark fantasy fan, eldritch horror fan, then you must check out the coroner. I couldn’t suggest this book enough. For such a talented writer, it would be great to see this book truly take off and become the next big thing in fantasy. Fresh ideas and a dark and gritty world as a back drop. It doesn’t get better than this!

Like many others, I was introduced to fantasy through Tolkien's “The Hobbit”. I will never forget how I felt reading that book. That internal explosion of passionate interest pulls you deep into this newfound world. You feel like a prisoner shackled to every word, like an addict who is just unable to satisfy the beast within. This extraordinary feeling has been my marker for what I deem as greatness throughout my journey through the world of fantasy.
The way in which Jordan’s “The Eye of the World” and Donaldson’s “Lord Fouls Bane” grabbed ahold of me from the beginning of the story and left me helplessly longing for more by the end, Nate Fitch with his Coroner series had managed to raise that same level of passion in me once again. Fitch has created a completely new world with depth and detail that is at a minimum on par with, but in my opinion, surpasses that of Erikson’s Malazan series and Sanderson’s Mistborn. I am a fan of this new author. The fantasy world should pay close attention to author Nate Fitch. This Coroner series is how fantasy/ dark fantasy should be done!

This was a total cover read for me and I'm glad that it was. I loved the concept of this book and loved that the main character and his order wear the plaque masks. I found the action scenes to be well written and the plot great. The story went to some very dark places and glanced over some very horrifying aspects of a humans ability to hurt others.
I did however find this shard to get through in some ways as I felt that too much time was spent describing everything all the characters felt and all the ways the magic and science worked in the world, which would pull me out of the story a lot.
I am still very interested to read more in this series and wait eagerly for the next one.

A wonderful take on grimdark fantasy. As soon as I picked it up I couldn't put it down. From monsters that are terrifyingly unique to the coroner organization I was hooked. Couldn't recommend it more to anyone who is even vaguely interested in dark fantasy.

The Coroner is a one-of-a-kind fantasy reading experience. Author Nate Fitch brings an entirely new world to life with a fresh concept desperately needed in today's fiction market. Like Sanderson's Mistborne series, Sapkowski's Witcher, and Gameworkshop's Warhammer verse, Nate Fitch's The Coroner joins the ranks as a thrilling fantasy read centered around a faction with profound lore and mystery. It was a great read that I highly recommend, and I implore any fantasy fan to engage with it. I Cannot wait for the second book in the series.
