Jesse never thought she’d find Hollywood royalty standing on her doorstep. But she just did, and saying no to finding a kid abducted by a warlock isn’t an option. It’s a new case that will lead her and Thor down a rabbit hole filled with ghosts, cryptic clues, and lies, not to mention something in the woods that would give the devil nightmares.
Meanwhile, Ma’s former best friend—a conjure woman she hasn’t seen in years—shows up out of the blue with bad news. A powerful book of dark magic has been stolen. All the witches of Cabbagetown are being targeted. Someone is stealing dangerous magical weapons from each of them, and Jesse has good reason to suspect the thefts are connected to her case.
But no one sees what’s coming, and when the dust settles, the truth will do anything but set them free.
Luanne Bennett is an author of fantasy and the supernatural. Born in Chicago, she lives in Georgia these days where she writes full time and doesn’t miss a thing about the cubicles and conference rooms of her old life. When she isn’t writing or dreaming up new stories, she’s usually cooking or tending a herd of felines and basset hounds. Look for book three of the Katie Bishop series coming this spring!
Jesse and Thor have got another case to solve and it's a real hum dinger. They need help from every corner and everyone is involved anyway. Beautifully written as I've come to expect, this one is really gritty and really lets loose with the odd characters. Can't get enough of the series and am already desperate for more.
Initially Jesse Ames is grateful for the new client crossing her threshold, a first impression that rapidly fades, when she realizes the magnitude of the case at hand: the abduction of a prominent movie star’s daughter. But starving P.I.s unable to pay rent more often than not, cannot be choosers 😉 and Thor is very intended in taking the case. A case that promptly develops into a magical fight to stop a warlock, and forces Jesse to call in any favour she might have, and join efforts with Blade Bastian, the head of the local vampire cartel, to stop the warlock for achieving his objective….. but again starving P.I.s 😉😊
„Gods & Savages is the second book in the “The Chronicles of Jesse Ames” by Luanne Bennet a captivating, innovative and gritty urban fantasy series which takes place in the ‘Katie Bishop Verse’, well-known to Bennett’ fans: a world much like our own, with the sole difference of displaying fantastic elements and creatures, living side-by-side with ‘normal’ humans. A carefully build world, already familiar to those already acquainted with Bennett’s ‘Katie Bishop’ series. However, although knowledge of the ‘Katie Bishop’ series adds some layers to the world-building, there is by not means strictly necessary to enjoy this new series to the fullest.
Kati and Jesse share common traits, without ever been interchangeable, both are intelligent, strong, smart, and unapologetic, but Jesse’s snark and colourful language surpasses Katie by the experience of a couple of decades. “The Chronicles of Jesse Ames” is urban fantasy at its very core: a veritable page-tuner with a balanced mix of fast-action and in-deep description, a smart plot, fully enjoyable from start to finish, with a realistic and fully relatable heroine, and the most original shifter-sidekick you might ever came across, good-natured and no-nonsense, just don’t… .Ever… Call… Him… Theodore…. unless you are Jesse AND mad 😉.
Luanne Bennett's characters are bold, brazen and unique.
Jesse Ames is a PI that tends to get less than honest clients. She's a mere human (well if you don't count the heritage-her ancestors- of tattoos covering her that can take her over, make her fight better, sense magic and trouble) surrounded by shifters, fae, vampires, conjure women and the rest of the supernatural characters you need to make fantastic urban fantasy. Her partner is a wolf - and poodle shifter that tends to get himself into monumental trouble. In the past they escaped NOLA and the powerful vampires they managed to piss off there. Now they are living in Atlanta.
In their latest case they're hunting for the missing child of a Hollywood actor. Something's fishy though, Jesse has that itchy feeling and that usually means big trouble. Her new client is hiding something big and it might just be about the warlock he sent Jesse after.
Meanwhile, someone's stealing some pretty powerful things from the local witchy women and that brings in a firecracker named Thorny. She's feisty, dangerous powerful and full of some dark magic.
Jesse can't escape the vampire cartel and Blade is always there to save the day. One cocky move at a time. I think he's a little sweet on Jesse. Whether Jesse likes it or not, he's working his way under her skin.
So, all in all this is an awesome book. The characters are great (this author comes up with some of the best characters) the story is fast paced, mysterious and laugh out loud funny at times. Now, there's a long wait for the next book!!! I received this ARC from Luanne Bennett, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
So aside from a handful of scenes I could’ve done without because they honestly felt like idle chatter and movement that did nothing but eat up my minutes, I’m pretty intrigued with Jesse. I like her life right now and the crazy things going on. I like that I don’t feel the need to read in one sitting cause my life is busy. I like that I can read this when possible and still be interested.
Jesse is pretty blunt and cautious enough and secure enough to know when pride can get her hurt or worse. Her sidekick acts like the title sometimes, other times he’s an interesting wolf with some charm. No romance or anything but I like the small touches of “ooooo” between Jesse and Blade.
This makes me kinda wanna try Bishop again but I’m not sure if it was her, the writing or just Katie’s life that turned me off.
After having been introduced to the characters of Jesse Ames and Thor (not the Norse God) in the Katie Bishop series I knew I wanted to read the spin-off series about them. I wasn’t disappointed, there’s plenty of outstanding characters with huge personalities lots of drama and tons of action. What’s not to love? This book ends with a startling announcement for Jesse, Thor and pretty much everyone of the supernatural persuasion in Atlanta. Trouble is coming fast, this time it’s not anything that Jesse fell into on her own, it’s still coming for her though. Exciting stuff, I’m off to dive into the next book now. This series needs to be read in order but can be read independently of the Katie Bishop series although if I were in your position I’d read those first. Highly recommend.
Another fantastic read from Luanne Bennett’s imagination. Gods & Savages is the second book in the Jesse Ames series. As with her first book, this one is filled to the brim with action. Parker Harrison is a very famous movie star whose daughter has been abducted. The problem is, this is no mundane abduction – she has been taken by a very powerful Warlock! How does Jesse plan on getting her back? She has to call on some very powerful friends and even a few adversaries. For readers who enjoy this genre, you won’t be disappointed. I can’t recommend this book highly enough and have given an honest review after receiving an ARC.
Thought book one was good, well book two will blow you away! Jesse is back and it’s action packed, fast paced and one hell of an adventure as she tries to find a movie star’s missing daughter whose been kidnapped by a powerful warlock. It’s exciting, it’s gritty, it’s thrilling and it’s brimming with magic, mystery and suspense. Holding you on the edge of your seat as we meet warlocks, witches, vampires, shifters & fae , this incredible read has you hook, line and sinker with its addictive storyline and humour.
Once I got into this book I couldn’t stop reading it until the end because it was too good to stop. It was so thrilling and had so much excitement all the way through it and so many twists and turns how could you possibly put it down! My mind kept going when I did put it down because of the anticipation of what was happening next in the book so much that the next morning, the book was opened up and reading began immediately. It is definitely a great read.
She’s human with attitude and balances that with heart. Love, love, love. Good characters. 3 dimensional characters, fast moving story line She’s not a beautiful 20 year old with the perfect amount of both brains and beauty. She’s a mature woman with an interesting story
Great story. I hope you keep this series going for a while. Jesse and Thor have a strange relationship, but Blade and Jesse seem more likely. There are some cool characters to develop as this series progresses.
This second book of the series moved faster and was much less sleep inducing. Jesse is still too outmatched by her opponents to be considered anything but lucky to have powerful friends.
Gods and Savages us the 2nd book in the Jesse Ames series. I loved the book. It kept me enthralled. Would like more of this series. I will read anything that Luanne writes!!
